The most effective way to quiet a window air conditioner is to correct its installation before buying accessories or replacing the unit. A sound window frame, rigidly fastened support bracket or rail, level cabinet, properly fitted vibration isolation pads, and sealed sash gaps address most rattles and wall-borne hums. Clean the filter and tighten loose panels as well. If the compressor remains too loud after those checks, a variable-speed, U-shaped, or saddle-style model can move the compressor outside the room and reduce the source of the noise.
Do not treat any single noise figure as universal. The Federal Highway Administration notes that window units can produce interior levels as high as 62 dB, but the actual result depends on the model, room, structure, and installation.
Identify what kind of noise you are hearing
Noise has to travel through a path. A loose bracket or side curtain creates a rattle; a rigid contact between the cabinet and sill can transmit compressor vibration into the wall; an unsealed sash produces hiss; and the compressor or fan itself is the source when the installation is sound. Listen during startup, steady cooling, and shutdown so you can match the symptom to the likely cause.
| Sound or symptom | Most likely path | First inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Rattle or buzz that follows compressor cycles | Loose stand, bracket, side curtain, cabinet panel, or sash contact | Check fasteners, panels, curtains, and every point where the cabinet touches the window. |
| Low-frequency hum felt in the sill or wall | Structure-borne vibration through a hard contact or compressed support | Inspect the support rail, shims, bracket feet, and isolation material. |
| Air hiss or whistle | Leak around the sash, side panels, sill, or head | Look for visible daylight and deteriorated weatherstripping. |
| Noise that recently became worse | Dusty filter, shifted cabinet, loose hardware, or a frame that has moved | Clean the filter, verify level, and recheck the support and window frame. |
| Constant mechanical noise with no loose contact | Fan or compressor design and operating speed | Confirm that installation and maintenance are correct before considering replacement. |
The Federal Highway Administration reports interior noise as high as 62 dB for window air conditioners. That is an upper figure reported on its page, not a prediction for every appliance or room. A small room with hard surfaces can sound louder than a larger, furnished room even with the same machine.

Make the installation safe before trying to make it quiet
A window air conditioner is a heavy object projecting from a building opening. A quiet installation is not useful if the unit can shift, fall, or damage the frame. Follow the air-conditioner manual and local building requirements. If the frame is rotten, cracked, loose, or unable to carry the load, stop and repair the opening or use a professional installer.
Inspect the window and the building attachment
- Check that the sill, jambs, sash, and surrounding trim are sound and firmly attached to the wall.
- Confirm that the support bracket, rail, or angle is fastened to structural material with the hardware specified for that system. A screw into thin trim or gypsum board is not a structural attachment.
- Verify that the window can be opened without the unit moving. NYC Buildings advises that the unit should remain in place when the window is opened.
- Look below the appliance for loose blocks, bricks, books, cans, scraps of wood, or other improvised supports. Remove them rather than trying to wedge them tighter.
Secure shims and leveling objects
Leveling pieces can migrate when the compressor starts. NYC Buildings says shims should be independently fastened and leveling objects secured against vibration. Do not depend on the weight of the air conditioner to hold a loose wedge in place. The support system must carry the load while the window remains operable and the cabinet stays in the position required by the manufacturer.
Step-by-step procedure to reduce rattling and vibration
1. Turn the unit off and map every contact point
Disconnect power before touching the cabinet or support hardware. With the unit off, gently press the cabinet, side curtains, sash, and bracket. A panel that moves or clicks is a potential rattle source. Mark hard contact points where metal or plastic bears directly on the sill, frame, or support. Never remove a structural fastener while the unit is unsupported.
2. Rebuild the support instead of adding loose weight
Use a bracket, rail, or angle rated for the air conditioner’s weight and fasten it firmly to the building. The support should contact the intended structural surfaces, not a loose decorative ledge. Tighten hardware evenly and replace damaged fasteners. If the cabinet has shifted outward or inward, support it while you reposition it according to the manual. A rigidly attached support generally stops more vibration than an improvised stack of objects, because it cannot rock as the compressor cycles.

3. Add compatible isolation at the support contacts
The Federal Highway Administration recommends open-cell neoprene pads under window units, at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) thick and preferably 1 inch (2.54 cm) thick, along with neoprene gasketing around the perimeter. Use that recommendation as a design reference, not as permission to install a pad that makes the unit unstable or blocks drainage. The pad must fit the bracket or sill, remain captive when the window moves, and be compatible with the air-conditioner manual.
Place isolation material only at actual load-bearing contact points. A pad folded into a gap or extending beyond the support can let the cabinet rock. Do not cover drain openings, condenser-air passages, electrical components, or service access. If the unit requires a particular slope for condensate management, preserve that position rather than forcing it perfectly level in a way the manufacturer does not allow.
4. Level and fasten the cabinet
Use a level on the surfaces identified by the manual. Correct a tilt with the approved bracket adjustment or secured shim, not with loose objects pushed under one corner. Recheck the cabinet after tightening because tightening one side can pull the unit out of position. The goal is a stable installation that meets the manufacturer’s drainage and support instructions; do not alter the cabinet or drill new holes unless the instructions explicitly permit it.

5. Seal the sash, sill, head, and side gaps
Air leaks can whistle, and a loose seal can let a side curtain vibrate. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner specification calls for weatherstripping or gasket material that seals the sash, sill or head, and side gaps. Examples include vinyl-clad foam, EPDM cellular rubber, and silicone rubber. Choose a material that tolerates the local temperature, moisture, and sunlight and that the manual allows.

Apply the seal where the moving sash and fixed frame actually meet. Compress it enough to stop air movement without preventing the window from locking or placing excessive force on the cabinet. Seal side-panel edges and the perimeter where appropriate, but leave drainage paths, condenser airflow, and removable service panels unobstructed. A permanent bead of sealant over a service opening can turn a minor noise problem into a maintenance problem.
6. Stop cabinet and panel rattles
Tighten loose screws, clips, and side-curtain fasteners with the correct tool. Replace cracked panels rather than packing them with random material. If two approved panels touch and vibrate, use the gasket or weatherstrip specified for that joint. Do not wedge combustible household items into the cabinet, block the fan inlet or outlet, or cover a grille to reduce sound.
7. Clean and reinstall the filter
LG’s support guidance dated October 21, 2023, identifies a dusty filter as a possible reason an air conditioner sounds louder. Remove and clean the filter exactly as the owner’s manual directs, allow a washable filter to dry, and reinstall it so it sits flat in its track. A filter that is missing, bent, or incorrectly fitted can itself rattle and can alter airflow noise.

8. Test one change at a time
Restore power and listen through a complete compressor cycle. If the noise changes, turn the unit off before making the next adjustment. Testing one intervention at a time tells you whether the source was a loose contact, vibration path, air leak, or maintenance issue. Keep the window and support under observation during the first several cycles after any hardware change.

What to put under a window air conditioner
For a supported window unit, the useful material is a compatible vibration-isolation pad at the load-bearing contact points, not a random soft object. Open-cell neoprene is the material specifically cited by the Federal Highway Administration for this application. Its recommended thickness range is 1/2 inch minimum and 1 inch preferred, but the correct choice still depends on the bracket geometry, load, drainage, and manufacturer instructions.
A pad does not replace a bracket. The bracket or rail provides the structural load path; the pad interrupts some vibration traveling through that path. If the unit is held up by loose books, bricks, or unfastened wood, adding rubber does not make the installation safe. Remove the improvised support and install a properly fastened system first.
How to make a window AC quieter at night
Nighttime noise is more noticeable because background sound is lower. Before bedtime, use the following sequence:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm that the window is locked around the unit and that the sash and side panels are not moving.
- Check for a newly developed rattle during both compressor-on and fan-only periods.
- Verify that the filter is clean and seated correctly.
- Listen for a low hum transmitted through the wall; if you feel vibration in the sill, shut the unit down and inspect the support rather than trying to mask it with household objects.
- Use the quietest operating mode allowed by the manual, without restricting airflow or changing a required drainage setting.
If the sound is still objectionable after the installation is secure, source-level changes are more promising than adding thicker tape. A unit designed with the compressor outside the room can address the mechanical source rather than only its contact points.

When replacement is the better solution
Some compressors and fan systems are inherently louder than others. ENERGY STAR notes that variable-speed compressor technology can cool quietly. It also identifies U-shaped and saddle-style room air conditioners as designs that provide greater noise reduction because the compressor sits outside the room. These layouts can also preserve more of the window opening, depending on the model.
| Option | Noise mechanism addressed | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the existing unit and correct installation | Loose contact, structure-borne vibration, air leaks, and neglected maintenance | Requires a sound frame, safe support, and time to inspect each contact. |
| Variable-speed compressor model | Can reduce compressor operating noise by varying speed instead of repeatedly running at one speed | Confirm the model’s published noise information, capacity, fit, controls, serviceability, and installation requirements. |
| U-shaped unit | Places the compressor outside the room for greater noise reduction | Requires compatible window geometry and a support system designed for that shape. |
| Saddle-style unit | Locates the compressor outside the room while straddling the sill | Check sill width, weather sealing, drainage, structural support, and the amount of window opening retained. |
| Another conventional window unit | May provide a quieter fan or compressor, but does not inherently eliminate installation vibration | Compare noise ratings under comparable conditions and plan the support and sealing before purchase. |
Do not assume that every newer model is quiet. Compare the published noise information, physical fit, support requirements, condensate handling, efficiency, and service access. A quiet compressor in a loose frame can still rattle, while a properly supported conventional unit may be acceptable in a furnished room.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom after the first fix | Next check | Stop and seek help when |
|---|---|---|
| Rattle remains only when the compressor starts | Watch the bracket, sash, side curtains, and cabinet for movement during startup; tighten or refasten the moving part. | The cabinet shifts, the frame cracks, or a fastener will not hold structural material. |
| Hum is felt through the wall even though panels are tight | Inspect hard metal-to-sill contacts and the condition and placement of the isolation pads. | The unit cannot remain stable with isolation material installed or the wall attachment is damaged. |
| Whistle continues after weatherstripping | Check the top sash, side-panel edges, and corners for a bypass path; verify that the seal is compressed evenly. | Sealing would block a drain, condenser-air opening, or required service access. |
| Noise increased after cleaning | Make sure the filter is dry, seated, and not warped; inspect for a panel or clip displaced during cleaning. | The fan strikes an object, there is scraping, burning smell, or electrical irregularity. |
| Vibration starts only after the window is opened | Confirm that the support and independently fastened shims keep the unit fixed with the sash in the open position. | The unit moves when the window is operated; discontinue use until the support is corrected. |
Maintenance that prevents the noise from returning
- At the start of the cooling season, inspect the frame, bracket, rail, fasteners, shims, pads, sash, and side curtains.
- Clean the filter at the interval specified by the manual and whenever airflow becomes restricted.
- After severe weather or building work, verify that the cabinet has not shifted and that seals remain compressed.
- Replace pads or weatherstripping that are torn, permanently flattened, detached, or incompatible with the current support geometry.
- Keep the outdoor coil and airflow openings clear using the cleaning method approved by the manufacturer.
Periodic inspection matters because isolation materials can compress and fasteners can loosen under repeated compressor cycles. A small movement found early is easier to correct than a damaged sill or wall attachment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using books, bricks, cans, or loose timber: these can shift and transmit impact directly into the building.
- Adding a soft pad without checking stability: excessive or misplaced softness can let the unit rock, defeat drainage, or reduce bracket engagement.
- Sealing every opening with adhesive or caulk: this can trap water, block airflow, or prevent service.
- Ignoring a dusty filter: maintenance-related airflow noise can remain even after hardware is tightened.
- Drilling the cabinet or altering the frame casually: structural and electrical damage can result, and the change may conflict with the manual.
- Judging a replacement by a single decibel number: ratings are meaningful only when the measurement conditions and installation are comparable.
A practical decision path
Start with safety: if the unit or frame moves, correct the support before operating it. Next, classify the sound as a loose-contact rattle, structure-borne hum, air leak, maintenance noise, or inherent compressor noise. Correct the matching path in that order: rigid support, compatible isolation, perimeter sealing, panel tightening, and filter maintenance. Test after each change. If the remaining sound is produced by the compressor itself and the installation is sound, compare variable-speed, U-shaped, and saddle-style designs rather than adding random damping material.
There is no universal decibel reduction for a particular pad, bracket, gasket, or do-it-yourself fix. Results depend on the appliance, building structure, contact points, and installation quality. The durable solution is the one that removes the actual transmission path while keeping the air conditioner safely supported, correctly drained, serviceable, and compliant with its instructions.
