To make a TV picture look more natural, open the picture settings, find the brand’s motion-processing control, and set it to Off. If completely disabling it makes movement look too jerky, choose a lower Smoothness or De-Judder value instead. Sony calls its system Motionflow; LG calls it TruMotion. A film-oriented mode such as Filmmaker Mode can also be a useful starting point on supported models.
The exact menu, labels and available controls vary by TV model, region and software version. Change one setting at a time while watching a familiar movie scene, then check a fast-moving scene before deciding whether the result is comfortable.
What motion smoothing does
Motion smoothing is processing performed by the television after it receives the video signal. It does not change the movie file itself. Sony describes Motionflow as increasing the number of displayed video frames so movement appears smoother. LG describes TruMotion as optimizing fast-moving pictures.
Films are commonly presented with a deliberate, cinematic cadence. Strong interpolation can make that cadence look unusually fluid, which viewers often describe as the “soap opera effect.” Some people prefer the extra smoothness for sports, live broadcasts or games; others find it distracting in scripted movies. Neither preference is universally correct.

Interpolation can also produce visible artifacts: a halo or noise around a moving object, broken edges, or an odd jump when a scene changes. Those symptoms do not by themselves indicate a defective panel. Start with reversible picture-setting changes before considering hardware service.
For background on the processing itself, see Sony’s explanation of Motionflow, which describes its purpose as making movement appear smoother by increasing the number of displayed frames.
The quickest way to reduce smoothing
- Pause on a familiar scene. A slow camera pan, a face moving across the screen and a scene with fine detail make changes easier to see. Use the same source while comparing settings.
- Open Picture or Picture Settings. Depending on the TV, the relevant submenu may be called Motion, Clarity, Advanced Picture Settings or Picture Options.
- Look for the motion feature. Search for Motionflow, TruMotion, Motion Enhancement, Smoothness, De-Judder or a similarly named control.
- Compare Off with the current setting. Turning the feature off is the clearest test of whether interpolation is causing the unnatural appearance.
- If Off looks too uneven, lower the strength. Use a lower Smoothness or De-Judder setting where the TV provides one. Avoid copying a numeric value from another brand; scales are not standardized.
- Check a fast scene. Watch sports, an action sequence or a camera whip-pan. Make sure the compromise you chose does not create distracting blur or judder for the content you actually watch.
Use the supplied remote and the TV’s own menus; no accessory, calibration disc or streaming device is required for this adjustment. Photographing the original setting first makes it easy to reverse the change.

Sony TVs: Motionflow, Smoothness and CineMotion
Where the controls are
Sony’s menu names differ across Android TV and Google TV models. In the picture settings, look for Motionflow. On supported sets, choosing Custom exposes separate Smoothness and Clearness controls. Choosing Off disables Motionflow.
Sony’s general instructions are in Adjust the picture settings on your Android TV. A model-specific example is available for the XBR-55A8G at Sony’s XBR-55A8G picture-settings guide. Sony’s general Motionflow support article was updated November 1, 2024; the menu shown on your set can still differ.
What to change first
Set Motionflow to Off and watch the same scene again. If you want a small amount of interpolation, return to Custom and reduce Smoothness rather than raising it. Keep Clearness separate: it is a blur-reduction function, not the same frame-interpolation adjustment. Changing Clearness can alter brightness or motion clarity without removing the smoothing effect.
Do not assume that a preset such as Standard, Vivid or Cinema tells you exactly what Motionflow is doing. Open the individual motion menu after selecting a preset and note whether the TV has enabled an automatic or custom value. Some sets make different choices for each input or picture mode.

CineMotion is a different function
Sony describes CineMotion—called Film Mode in some regions—as processing intended for film content such as 24-frames-per-second movies. It handles film cadence; it is not simply another Smoothness slider. Leave it as a separate experiment and change only one motion-related control at a time. Turning CineMotion off is not the same as turning Motionflow off, and changing it may address cadence handling rather than the artificial smoothness you notice.
If fast scenes show noise
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says to try another Motionflow mode, then use Custom with a lower Smoothness setting, and select Off if the noise remains. The support page is Noise appears during fast-moving scenes or scene transitions, modified July 6, 2026. Some Sony televisions adjust Motionflow automatically and do not expose a manual control; in that case, use the available picture preset and consult support for the exact model.
LG TVs: TruMotion and De-Judder
Example path for webOS 22
LG’s example for 2022 webOS 22 uses this route:
- Press the settings button and open All Settings.
- Choose Picture.
- Open Advanced Settings.
- Select Clarity.
- Open TruMotion.
The path is documented in LG’s support article, dated July 17, 2026, which specifically covers webOS 22: LG TV picture and TruMotion settings. A different webOS release or regional firmware may move Clarity or use different labels.
Choose Off or a manual setting
Set TruMotion to Off for the least interpolation. Depending on the model, preset choices may include Cinematic, Natural and Smooth. Another LG manual documents Off, Smooth, Clear and User. In User mode, De-Judder and De-Blur can be adjusted independently. The manual is available as a PDF at LG’s picture-options and TruMotion manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the TV offers De-Judder, reduce that control first when film motion looks overly fluid. De-Blur addresses a different aspect of motion clarity, so do not assume that changing it will remove interpolation. If a preset is the only available choice, compare Cinematic or Natural with Off rather than assuming Smooth is the default you need.
Do not treat every “motion” option as the same
| Control type | What it changes | When to adjust it | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame interpolation | Creates or inserts frames to make movement look smoother; examples include Sony Motionflow and LG TruMotion. | Reduce Smoothness or De-Judder, or turn it Off, when movies look unnaturally fluid. | It does not correct every blur or cadence problem. |
| Blur reduction or clarity | Attempts to make moving detail appear sharper; examples include Sony Clearness and LG De-Blur. | Use it when motion detail is soft, but evaluate brightness and artifacts separately. | It is not equivalent to disabling interpolation. |
| Film-cadence processing | Recognizes and handles film-originated video; Sony calls its function CineMotion or, in some regions, Film Mode. | Use it when film playback has cadence or pulldown issues. | It is not another Smoothness setting. |
| Picture mode | Applies a package of image and processing choices, such as a cinema-oriented preset. | Use it as a convenient starting point, then inspect individual controls. | A mode labeled Cinema does not necessarily disable every processing feature. |
Because these functions work differently, changing every option at once makes it impossible to tell which setting fixed—or caused—the problem. If a film still looks artificial after interpolation is off, test sharpening, clarity and cadence controls separately rather than turning them all off blindly.
Use a movie-oriented picture mode carefully
On supported televisions, Filmmaker Mode can provide a less processed starting point for films. LG says motion smoothing and sharpening that work well for sports and television programs can make feature films look too smooth and overly processed, and describes Filmmaker Mode as supporting the intended presentation. LG’s official release is available at LG’s Filmmaker Mode announcement.

Filmmaker Mode is not available on every TV, and its behavior can vary by model and input. Do not assume that selecting Cinema, Theater or Movie automatically disables all motion processing. After selecting a mode, open the motion menu and verify whether TruMotion or another interpolation feature is still active. If you prefer the mode’s color or brightness but not its motion behavior, keep the mode and adjust only the motion control.
Choose settings by the content you watch
Films and scripted television
Start with interpolation Off or the lowest comfortable Smoothness/De-Judder setting. Examine slow pans, subtitles and faces crossing the frame. If the picture still looks too processed, check whether sharpening or clarity enhancements are also enabled, but change those separately from motion interpolation. A setting that looks natural in a brightly lit action scene may still look artificial during a quiet dialogue shot, so test both.
Sports and live broadcasts
Some viewers prefer additional smoothing for a rapidly moving ball, camera tracking or scrolling score graphics. If you enable a little interpolation for sports, consider using a separate picture preset so your movie settings remain unchanged. Look for halos around players and distorted lines during quick pans; lower the strength if those artifacts are distracting. There is no requirement to use the same setting for every broadcast.
Games
Game-focused modes may prioritize responsiveness and can use a different processing profile. Check the TV’s game picture mode and then inspect its motion options. Do not assume a movie setting is appropriate for every console or game; evaluate controller response and moving detail in the actual titles you play. If a game mode locks a control, that is a model-specific behavior rather than evidence that the panel is faulty.
Mixed viewing
If several people share the TV, choose the least processing that everyone finds comfortable, or save separate presets for movies, sports and games when the model supports them. The best setting is a viewing preference tied to content, not a universal quality score. Explain the trade-off to other viewers: Off usually gives the most film-like motion, while a small amount of smoothing may make live action easier for them to follow.

- Choose one source and one familiar scene. Streaming apps, broadcast channels and discs can have different frame rates, so compare like with like.
- Write down or photograph the original settings before changing them.
- Turn interpolation Off and watch at least one slow pan and one dialogue scene.
- Restore the original setting, then try a lower Smoothness or De-Judder value if available.
- Check a fast scene for halos, broken edges, noise and excessive blur.
- Test the setting on another source. A control may be stored separately for HDMI inputs, apps or picture modes.
- Leave the TV on the chosen setting for a full program before making a final judgment. Familiarity can make an initially different cadence feel more natural.
- Keep the option that looks natural and comfortable for the content you watch most. There is no manufacturer-standard numeric scale that makes one value transferable between brands.
When a control is missing or behaves differently
Menu availability is model- and software-dependent. LG’s cited route is specifically for webOS 22, while Sony publishes multiple paths for different Android TV models. A newer firmware version can also rename, move or automate a control.
- Search the Picture, Clarity, Motion and Advanced Picture Settings sections.
- Check whether a special mode, input type or game mode has locked the control.
- Look up the exact model number in the manufacturer’s support site rather than relying on instructions for a similar-looking TV.
- If the TV automatically adjusts motion and offers no manual option, use the available picture preset and document the behavior when contacting support.
- Check whether the setting is stored per input or per picture mode; changing it while watching an app may not change an HDMI device.
Do not infer a hardware failure solely from a smooth or artificial-looking image. If Off or a lower setting removes the effect, the cause was picture processing. If severe artifacts remain with motion processing disabled across multiple sources, consult model-specific support for further diagnosis.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for a universal “soap opera effect” switch: Manufacturers use their own names, including Motionflow and TruMotion.
- Disabling every motion-related setting: Interpolation, blur reduction and film-cadence handling serve different purposes.
- Copying another brand’s number: Smoothness and De-Judder scales are not standardized.
- Assuming Cinema equals no processing: Verify the actual motion controls after selecting a preset.
- Changing several controls together: Make one change, observe the result, then continue.
- Testing only one type of scene: Slow pans reveal interpolation, while sports and action reveal halos and broken edges.
- Buying equipment to solve a menu setting: The adjustment uses the TV and its supplied remote; no additional product is necessary.
Frequently asked questions
Is turning motion smoothing off the same as turning motion blur off?
No. Motion smoothing or interpolation creates additional frames. Blur reduction, such as Sony Clearness or LG De-Blur, addresses the appearance of moving detail and can affect brightness or clarity. Turn off or reduce interpolation when the picture looks unnaturally fluid; evaluate blur controls separately.
What should I set Motionflow to on a Sony TV?
Start with Off. If that looks too uneven, select Custom and lower Smoothness. Do not copy a numeric value from another Sony model or another brand, because the available scale and processing can differ. Clearness is a separate control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I stop the soap-opera effect on an LG TV?
Open Settings → All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Clarity → TruMotion on the webOS 22 example, then choose Off. On models with User mode, lower De-Judder. Your TV may use a different route or offer only presets, so confirm the model-specific manual.
Should I use Filmmaker Mode for every movie?
It is a useful starting point on supported TVs, but it is not universal and does not guarantee that every motion feature is disabled. Select it, then inspect TruMotion, Motionflow or the equivalent control. Keep it if its overall image suits you and adjust motion independently if necessary.
Why does the setting change when I switch inputs?
Many TVs store picture choices by input or picture mode. A change made in a streaming app may not carry over to an HDMI console or disc player. Test each source you use and save a separate preset when the TV allows it.
Why does motion look noisy only during scene changes?
Interpolation can struggle with fast movement, transitions and objects that are partly hidden. Sony recommends trying another Motionflow mode, then Custom with lower Smoothness, and finally Off if noise remains. If artifacts continue with processing disabled on several sources, contact support.
Can I fix this with a new cable, streaming box or calibration disc?
Not for the setting change described here. The relevant adjustment is in the TV’s picture menu and uses the supplied remote. A cable or accessory is not required.

Is there one best motion setting for everyone?
No. Some viewers prefer extra smoothness for sports or live television, while others want the deliberate cadence of films. Choose the least processing that remains comfortable for the content and viewers in your home.
Bottom line
Open the TV’s picture controls, turn Motionflow, TruMotion or the equivalent interpolation feature Off, and compare the result with a familiar movie scene. If Off is uncomfortable, lower Smoothness or De-Judder instead. Keep Clearness, De-Blur and CineMotion/Film Mode conceptually separate, and use a film-oriented preset only as a starting point. Because menus and processing differ by model and software version, the least processed setting that remains comfortable for your content is the practical definition of a natural picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reduce motion smoothing quickly?
Open Picture or Picture Settings, find Motionflow, TruMotion, Smoothness or De-Judder, and choose Off or a lower value. Compare the result on a familiar movie scene and a fast scene.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Filmmaker Mode turn off all motion processing?
Not necessarily. It is a film-oriented starting point on supported TVs, but verify the individual motion controls after selecting it.
Why do Sony and LG use different names?
Sony calls its motion system Motionflow, while LG uses TruMotion. Menus and options also vary by model and software version.
Do I need an accessory to change this setting?
No. The TV’s built-in picture menu and supplied remote are sufficient.
The Bottom Line
For a more natural movie picture, disable Motionflow, TruMotion or the equivalent interpolation feature first. If that is too choppy, reduce Smoothness or De-Judder. Treat blur reduction and film-cadence controls as separate adjustments, and verify the result for each input and type of content.
