The safest way to reduce motion sickness on Apple Vision Pro is to lower visual motion and immersion, keep your head and neck still, and build up viewing time gradually. Start with a short, seated session using lower-motion video. If discomfort appears, stop immediately, remove the headset, and wait until you are fully reoriented before driving, exercising, or doing anything that requires balance or close attention.
Work through these adjustments in order: turn the Digital Crown to reveal more of the room, make the video window smaller or farther away, enable Reduce Motion, and test Stabilize Nearby Content on or off when nearby app content is the trigger. On visionOS 26 or later, Detect High Motion can pause immersive video or reduce immersion automatically. None of these measures guarantees that symptoms will not occur; individual responses differ.
Recognize the symptoms before they intensify
Apple lists dizziness or disorientation, nausea, difficulty concentrating or reduced awareness, an upset stomach, increased salivation, headache, fatigue, and sweating as possible motion-sickness symptoms. Symptoms are not always immediate: depending on the situation, they can take up to 30 minutes to begin, according to Apple Support. A delayed reaction means you should judge how you feel after a session as well as during it.

Discomfort is not automatically motion sickness. Eye strain, a poor fit, an unrelated illness, or another vision or balance problem can feel different and may need separate attention. Do not try to diagnose the cause while continuing to watch; treat new or worsening symptoms as a reason to stop.

Pay attention to early, mild signs rather than waiting for nausea. A subtle feeling that the room is moving, difficulty focusing on a line of text, unusual warmth or sweating, or a growing headache is enough to end a trial. Stopping early makes it easier to identify which content or setting preceded the reaction and avoids turning a manageable warning into a prolonged episode.
What to do the moment you feel unwell
- Stop using the headset. Apple’s instruction is: “Stop using Apple Vision Pro if you feel unwell or experience symptoms of motion sickness.” See the July 14, 2026 Apple Support guidance.
- Sit or remain still in a safe place. Remove the headset if needed and allow your visual orientation to settle.
- Do not drive or perform safety-sensitive tasks until recovered. Apple’s safety guidance says to wait until symptoms subside before activities requiring balance, coordination, or safety attention.
- Get medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe. Apple also advises consulting a physician when symptoms continue. Seek urgent care for an emergency symptom rather than assuming it is headset-related.
Do not use a later improvement as permission to resume immediately. Because onset can be delayed, a symptom-free first few minutes do not prove that a long session will be comfortable. Keep the headset off until your orientation and concentration feel normal, and postpone stairs, cycling, cooking over heat, machinery, and other tasks where a brief lapse could cause an injury.
Build tolerance with a cautious viewing pattern
Start with short increments
Apple’s safety guide gives 20- or 30-minute sessions as examples of a starting length while you adjust; this is an example, not a universal safe limit. Begin below the point at which you usually notice discomfort, stop while you still feel normal, and extend a later session only if the previous one caused no delayed symptoms. Take breaks between sessions rather than treating one long viewing period as a test.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no requirement to reach 20 or 30 minutes. If five minutes is your comfortable starting point, use five minutes. Increase duration modestly, one variable at a time, and return to the previous shorter duration if symptoms appear. A break should be a genuine headset-free interval, not a switch to another moving virtual scene.
Choose less immersive material first
Begin with ordinary 2D video or lower-motion immersive scenes before attempting rapidly moving immersive footage. Avoid content marked as high motion while you are acclimating or if you already know that moving-camera scenes bother you. Customer-captured Spatial Video can also contain high-motion scenes even when it does not look like a professionally produced immersive title.
A calm, fixed viewpoint is generally a more sensible first experiment than a virtual ride, flight, roller coaster, rapid sports sequence, or camera that sweeps around your body. If a particular title has one troublesome segment, do not repeatedly replay that segment to test yourself; skip it or choose another title.
Watch while seated and upright
A stable chair removes walking and other body movement from the equation. Keep your torso upright and your head in a neutral position. If a scene encourages you to turn repeatedly, pause and reposition the window or choose another title instead of compensating with large neck movements.
Support your back and keep both feet in a stable position. Arrange the viewing area before playback so you do not have to stand, walk, or make quick movements while immersed. Physical motion and visual motion can occur together, so separating them makes it easier to notice what is provoking symptoms.

Reduce how dominant the moving image is
The quickest changes affect how much of your visual field is occupied by motion. Use one change at a time so you can tell which condition helps.
| Adjustment | How to make it | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal more of the room | Turn the Digital Crown to reduce immersion. | More real-world surroundings remain visible, providing a visual reference that Apple says can improve a sense of stability. |
| Make the video window less dominant | Decrease the window’s size or move it farther away. | The moving image occupies less of your field of view, reducing the amount of apparent motion you process. |
| Reduce system animation | Open Settings > Accessibility > Motion and turn on Reduce Motion. | Compatible system transitions and animations use less movement; this does not remove motion that is part of the video itself. |
These controls address visual motion, not every cause of discomfort. If the video itself contains rapid camera movement, a smaller window may help but may not make that content comfortable. Turning the Digital Crown is an immediate viewing change; Reduce Motion is a system accessibility setting that may affect transitions and interface animations beyond the video app.
There is no evidence in Apple’s guidance that one of these options is universally stronger than another. The useful comparison is the trigger: change immersion, window size, or content when the moving image dominates; change Reduce Motion or nearby-content stabilization when interface movement is the issue; stop and recover when symptoms have already started.

Some people feel discomfort from app windows, labels, or other content anchored in the room rather than from the immersive video. In visionOS 2.1 and later, open Settings > Awareness & Safety > Stabilize Nearby Content and compare the experience with the setting on and off. Apple notes that the change can take up to 30 seconds to apply fully.
Toggle it, wait for the full application period, and then watch the same short clip from the same seat. Keep the setting that produces less discomfort; there is no evidence that one state is best for everyone. The label may appear as “Stabilize Near Content” in some safety documentation, while the current Support article uses “Stabilize Nearby Content.” Follow the wording shown by your installed visionOS version.
This setting is not a replacement for stopping when you feel sick. Change it only after you have recovered, and test one setting state at a time. If the discomfort happens only when several windows are positioned around you, first simplify the layout and place the video directly ahead; then compare the stabilization states.
Use high-motion safeguards on visionOS 26 and later
Apple’s newer safety controls can react to content with substantial motion. In Settings > Awareness & Safety > Detect High Motion, visionOS 26 or later lets you choose whether detected high-motion video should pause or whether immersion should be reduced. You can also select a sensitivity level.

This is a user-selectable aid, not a guarantee of prevention. A scene may still feel uncomfortable before the system responds, and content that is not flagged can still contain motion that bothers you. Keep your own stopping rule even when Detect High Motion is enabled. The control is documented for visionOS 26 and later; it should not be confused with Stabilize Nearby Content, which Apple identifies for visionOS 2.1 and later.
Reduce head and neck demands
Apple identifies both visual movement and head or neck movement as contributors. Keep your head upright instead of tilting it to follow a window. Sit with your back supported, and arrange frequently used apps so they remain in front of you rather than requiring repeated turns.
- Place the video at a comfortable height so you are not looking sharply upward or downward.
- Move a window instead of repeatedly rotating your head toward it.
- Pause before changing position; avoid quick head movements while a scene is already moving.
- If you need to look around the room, reduce immersion first so the real environment is easier to reference.
- Close or move peripheral windows that compete for attention while the main video is playing.
These changes reduce physical demand; they do not alter the motion encoded in the movie. If simply turning your head triggers symptoms, do not use repeated head movements as an acclimation exercise.
Choose content with motion in mind
Understand the high-motion label
Apple uses a high-motion label for some apps and Apple Immersive Media. Treat the label as a warning to introduce the title cautiously, not as a prediction that you will definitely become ill. A customer-recorded Spatial Video can include fast pans, movement through a space, or other high-motion sections without having the same label.
The label also does not mean every unlabelled clip is low motion. Look at how the camera behaves: rapid forward travel, spinning, frequent cuts, sweeping peripheral movement, and a viewpoint that appears to accelerate can all be reasons to stop, regardless of the title’s label.
Lower intensity while you learn your limits
Prefer scenes with gentle camera movement and a stable viewpoint. Skip rapid rides, simulated flight, fast sports footage, and scenes that sweep the camera around the viewer until you know how you respond. If only one segment causes trouble, stop before that segment rather than repeatedly testing it.
Apple’s developer guidance for comfortable immersive interfaces likewise recommends gentle camera and video motion, slower and less intense animation—especially at the edges of the field of view—and keeping interface elements within the viewer’s field of view. Those are design recommendations, not a clinical explanation or a promise that any particular title will be comfortable. See the Apple Human Interface Guidelines.

- Prepare the space. Sit upright in a stable chair, clear hazards around you, and place the video window directly ahead.
- Select a low-motion clip. Avoid high-motion-labeled material for the first trial and choose a short segment.
- Start with reduced immersion. Turn the Digital Crown until you can see more of the room.
- Reduce visual dominance. Make the window smaller or move it farther away.
- Enable Reduce Motion. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion.
- Watch briefly. Stop before discomfort appears, then monitor yourself after removing the headset because symptoms can be delayed.
- Change only one variable next time. If the first trial was comfortable, increase duration modestly or restore some immersion, but do not change several settings and the content at once.
- Test nearby-content stabilization if needed. On visionOS 2.1 or later, compare Stabilize Nearby Content on and off, waiting up to 30 seconds after each change.
- Use Detect High Motion on newer software. On visionOS 26 or later, choose pause or reduced immersion and set a sensitivity level under Settings > Awareness & Safety > Detect High Motion.
Keep a simple note of the title, session length, immersion level, and when symptoms appeared. That can reveal whether the trigger is a particular scene, nearby interface motion, duration, or head movement. It is a tracking aid, not a medical test. Record delayed symptoms as well as what happened during playback.

Troubleshoot by the likely trigger
| What you notice | First response | Next experiment after you have recovered |
|---|---|---|
| Discomfort starts during a fast-moving scene. | Stop the video and remove the headset. | Use a lower-motion title, a smaller or more distant window, and less immersion. |
| The room feels unstable when app windows move around you. | Stop and reorient. | Test Stabilize Nearby Content on and off, allowing up to 30 seconds after each toggle. |
| Symptoms follow repeated looking or turning. | Stop, sit upright, and keep your head still. | Rearrange windows so they are in front of you and reduce the need for neck rotation. |
| You feel fine initially but ill later. | End the session and monitor delayed symptoms. | Use shorter sessions and longer breaks; do not assume the first few minutes establish a safe duration. |
| Motion remains uncomfortable despite every adjustment. | Stop using immersive video. | Choose non-immersive content or seek medical advice if symptoms persist or recur. |
Health conditions and professional advice
Apple advises people with pre-existing conditions that could be aggravated by Vision Pro to consult a medical provider. Its safety information names migraine headaches, eye or vision conditions, inner-ear conditions, and psychological conditions as examples. That warning does not mean the headset caused a medical problem, and it does not identify which setting would be appropriate for you.
Do not use acclimation as a way to push through severe symptoms. Stop, recover fully, and speak with a clinician when symptoms are persistent, unusually intense, or keep returning even with ordinary viewing. Until you are fully reoriented, avoid driving and activities that depend on balance, coordination, or rapid safety decisions.

Apple provides practical controls and safety guidance, not a controlled comparison proving that one setting prevents motion sickness better than another. There is no published prevalence figure or head-to-head effectiveness estimate in the cited guidance. Treat Digital Crown adjustments, window placement, Reduce Motion, Stabilize Nearby Content, Detect High Motion, and gradual acclimation as options to test safely, not as guaranteed treatments.

Frequently asked questions
How long should my first Vision Pro session be?
Apple gives 20 or 30 minutes as examples of a starting length while adjusting, not as a universal safe limit. Start shorter if you are sensitive, stop while you still feel well, and only increase duration after a symptom-free session and an appropriate break. Because symptoms can begin up to 30 minutes after exposure, evaluate how you feel after removing the headset too.
Should I turn on Reduce Motion for the video itself?
Reduce Motion is under Settings > Accessibility > Motion and reduces compatible system transitions and animations. It does not remove camera movement that is recorded in the video. Pair it with a smaller or more distant window and lower immersion when the video itself is the dominant source of motion.
Is it better to leave Stabilize Nearby Content on?
Not necessarily. Apple recommends comparing the setting on and off when nearby app content causes discomfort, and says it can take up to 30 seconds to apply fully. Test both states with the same short clip and seating position after you have recovered; keep the state that feels better for you.
What does the high-motion warning mean?
The label identifies some apps and Apple Immersive Media that contain substantial motion. It is a caution, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that you will become sick. Customer-captured Spatial Video may also contain high-motion scenes without the label. Introduce any questionable clip gradually and stop at early symptoms.

Can Detect High Motion prevent motion sickness?
On visionOS 26 or later, Detect High Motion can be configured to pause a detected high-motion video or reduce immersion, with a selectable sensitivity. It is an aid rather than a guarantee. Keep your own stopping rule because the system may respond after discomfort starts or may not flag every troublesome scene.
What if symptoms appear after I remove the headset?
Delayed onset is possible, with Apple noting that symptoms may take up to 30 minutes to start. Remain seated or otherwise still, avoid driving and balance-dependent activities until fully reoriented, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe. Do not resume viewing simply because the first few minutes afterward feel better.
Should I buy an accessory or take medication?
The Apple guidance supports viewing changes, system settings, content selection, breaks, and stopping when unwell. It does not establish a strap, insert, medication, or other product as a remedy. Do not add a treatment or accessory on the assumption that it will reliably eliminate symptoms; discuss persistent problems with a medical professional.

When should I stop experimenting and ask a clinician?
Stop experimenting when symptoms are persistent, unusually intense, recur with ordinary viewing, or continue after you stop. Apple specifically identifies migraine headaches, eye or vision conditions, inner-ear conditions, and psychological conditions as examples of conditions that may be aggravated and warrant medical advice. An emergency symptom should receive urgent care rather than being attributed to Vision Pro.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my first Vision Pro session be?
Apple gives 20 or 30 minutes as examples, not a universal limit. Start shorter if needed, stop before symptoms, and monitor for delayed effects.
Does Reduce Motion remove motion from immersive video?
No. It reduces compatible system animations and transitions; recorded camera movement remains. Also reduce immersion and window dominance.
Should Stabilize Nearby Content stay on?
Compare it on and off for the same short clip. Apple says application can take up to 30 seconds, and individual responses differ.
Can Detect High Motion guarantee comfort?
No. On visionOS 26 or later it can pause video or reduce immersion at a chosen sensitivity, but it is only an aid.
What should I do if symptoms are delayed?
Stay still, avoid driving or balance-dependent activities until fully reoriented, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe.
The Bottom Line
Use less immersive, lower-motion video in a smaller or more distant window, sit upright with minimal head movement, and enable the relevant visionOS controls. Start with short sessions and breaks. At the first sign of dizziness, nausea, disorientation, headache, sweating, or concentration difficulty, stop using Apple Vision Pro and wait until fully recovered before safety-sensitive activities.
