Start by reducing unnecessary camera and screen movement in the game’s settings: turn down camera shake, head bob, weapon sway and motion blur, then adjust camera speed and field of view to your comfort. If you feel sick, stop playing and rest rather than trying to push through. Settings and menu labels vary by game, and no single configuration works for everyone.
Why first-person games can make you feel sick
In a first-person game, the view can show rapid movement even while your body is sitting still. That mismatch between visual movement and signals from your body’s balance and sensory systems can contribute to motion sickness, according to Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117. The guideline notes that general screen and camera movement can pose barriers by eliciting motion sickness during play.
Discomfort may develop gradually. The CDC Yellow Book 2026 lists nausea and vomiting among the primary symptoms, as well as dizziness, drowsiness or fatigue, sweating, headache and eyestrain. These are general motion-sickness symptoms, not a diagnosis of what is causing a particular player’s discomfort.
Which settings should you change first?
Look in the game’s Accessibility, Camera, Video or Gameplay menus. Names and availability differ by title, platform and version. Change settings that affect camera motion before trying to compensate by enduring the same effects.

| Setting | What it changes | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Camera shake | Extra screen movement from impacts, explosions or other events. | Turn it off or reduce it. |
| Head bob | Repeated vertical or side-to-side movement as the character walks or runs. | Turn it off or lower it if the option exists. |
| Weapon sway | Movement of the held weapon, which may also make the view feel less steady. | Reduce or disable it when possible. |
| Motion blur | Visual smearing during movement or quick turns. | Reduce or disable it and see whether the clearer image feels more comfortable. |
| Camera speed or sensitivity | How quickly the view turns in response to your input. | Lower it if fast turns are uncomfortable. The Accessible Games Initiative’s Camera Comfort criteria call for a way to decrease player-controlled camera movement speed. |
| Field of view (FOV) | How much of the scene is visible at once. | Adjust in small increments and keep the setting that feels comfortable; there is no universally recommended value. |
Some games offer a general motion-sickness or reduced-motion option. Try it, then check which individual effects it changes; the label alone does not tell you exactly what the game will adjust. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance supports adjustable camera and visual settings, but it is design guidance—not clinical proof that a particular setting will help every player.
How to test changes without making symptoms worse
- Find the relevant menu. Check Accessibility, Camera, Video and Gameplay settings for camera shake, head bob, weapon sway, motion blur, camera speed or sensitivity, FOV, and any motion-sickness or reduced-motion option.
- Reduce the most noticeable movement. Start with camera shake and head bob, then reduce weapon sway and motion blur if those effects are present.
- Adjust camera speed. Lower sensitivity or turn speed if moving the view quickly is uncomfortable.
- Experiment with FOV gradually. Make a small adjustment, play briefly only if you feel well, and keep the result that feels better. A wider FOV is not guaranteed to help; comfort can depend on the player and viewing conditions, including viewing distance.
- Change one category at a time when practical. This makes it easier to notice which adjustment matters to you. It is a practical troubleshooting approach, not a clinically validated test protocol.
- Stop if discomfort starts or builds. Do not continue a test to see how much sickness you can tolerate.
Why there is no universal best FOV or preset
FOV changes the visible scene, while shake and bob add repeated movement, blur affects how movement appears, and sensitivity controls how quickly the view turns. These settings target different effects, so they are not interchangeable—and the available evidence does not establish a universally effective combination or FOV number. Microsoft recommends adjustable FOV and notes that comfort can depend on factors such as viewing distance. Treat it as a personal setting to test cautiously, not a guaranteed cure.

Options in one game can illustrate what to look for, but they do not establish the right settings for another. For example, The Last of Us Part I includes camera shake, motion blur, camera distance, FOV and a persistent center dot in its accessibility options. Its camera-distance and FOV controls described in that feature list relate to a third-person camera, so they are not a first-person prescription.
When to stop and get medical advice
If you become dizzy or nauseous while playing, stop and rest. Square Enix’s health and safety guidance advises waiting until you have fully recovered before driving or doing other demanding activities. Contact a physician for guidance if symptoms persist or you are concerned about them. A game setting is not a substitute for medical advice.
