If fast camera movement makes you dizzy or nauseated, start in the game’s Accessibility, Camera, or Display menu. Turn off or lower camera shake, head or weapon bob, motion blur, speed lines, sway, and automatic camera movement. Then reduce look sensitivity or camera speed, test another field of view or perspective, and change only one option at a time. Stop playing if symptoms worsen. These controls can improve comfort, but no single setting works for every player or game.
Why fast movement in a game can make you feel sick
Motion sickness can occur when your eyes see movement that your body is not physically experiencing. In a game, the camera may appear to accelerate, sway, bounce, rotate, or rush forward while your head and inner ear remain still. Microsoft describes this visual-versus-physical mismatch in Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117, which notes that general screen and camera movement can create barriers by eliciting motion sickness during play.
Camera bob, weapon sway, shake, blur, speed lines, automatic camera turns, and rapid changes in viewpoint all add visual motion. Virtual-reality (VR) movement and simulator experiences can produce the same mismatch; the CDC Yellow Book 2026 lists VR and simulators among situations that can provoke motion sickness. That is general motion-sickness guidance, not a controlled test of one game setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBecause games implement movement differently, comfort is personal. A wide field of view may feel better to one player and worse to another. A third-person camera may help in one title, while a carefully adjusted first-person view works better in another. Treat every option below as a controlled adjustment rather than a guaranteed treatment.

Start with this five-minute settings check
- Open the right menu. Look under Accessibility, Camera, Display, Video, Controls, or VR Comfort. Menu names and locations vary by title, platform, and version.
- Disable extra camera motion. Set camera shake, head bob, weapon bob, weapon sway, screen shake, motion blur, and speed lines to Off or their lowest values.
- Slow the camera. Lower horizontal and vertical look sensitivity, camera speed, or turning speed. If there is an automatic camera-centering option, turn it off and test whether that removes unexpected movement.
- Choose a calmer viewpoint. If the game offers first- and third-person views or a camera-follow-distance slider, try each option and keep the one that feels steadier.
- Test, do not stack changes. Play briefly in a safe area after each change. Record what you changed, and revert any setting that makes symptoms worse.
You do not need to change every option at once. Isolating changes makes it possible to identify the movement that bothers you and keeps the game playable when one adjustment reduces visibility or control.
Turn off or reduce camera and visual effects
Camera shake and screen shake
Shake adds rapid, involuntary movement during impacts, explosions, sprinting, landing, or attacks. Set Camera Shake, Screen Shake, Impact Shake, or similar controls to Off. If the game offers a percentage or intensity slider instead of an on/off switch, start at the minimum and raise it only if you remain comfortable.
Some games separate weapon recoil from camera shake. Disabling shake may not remove the visual kick from firing, so check for Recoil View, Weapon Recoil, or View Kick as well. These labels are not standardized; read the description beside each control.
Head bob, camera bob, and weapon sway
Head bob makes the viewpoint rise and fall as the character walks or runs. Weapon sway moves an object near the center of the screen even when the environment is stable. Set Head Bob, Camera Bob, Walk Bob, Sprint Bob, and Weapon Sway to Off or Low when available. If only one combined Camera Movement setting exists, lower that control first.
Reducing bob can make movement look less natural, but it often leaves the environment easier to track. If a game lets you separate first-person body motion from weapon motion, lower both independently and keep the combination that gives you a stable horizon and usable aim.
Motion blur, radial blur, and speed lines
Motion blur smears the image during camera rotation or rapid travel. Radial blur and speed lines add streaks that imply acceleration. Turn off Motion Blur, Per-Object Motion Blur, Radial Blur, Speed Lines, Sprint Blur, and similar screen effects. A game may place these under Graphics or Display rather than Accessibility.

Disabling blur does not slow the character or camera; it removes a visual effect. If the image still feels too fast, combine this change with lower sensitivity or movement speed.
Sway, distortion, and automatic camera movement
Look for controls named View Sway, Camera Sway, Lens Distortion, Chromatic Aberration, Vignette, or Dynamic Camera. These effects can shift or distort the image without any input from you. Disable them when the game permits it, especially if symptoms begin during sprinting, swimming, being injured, or riding in a vehicle.
Automatic camera centering can repeatedly rotate the view after you release a stick or mouse. Set Auto-Center, Camera Recenter, or Follow Camera to Off if possible. You may need to turn the camera manually, but you remove an unexpected source of rotation.
Slow camera speed and sensitivity
Fast camera rotation can be uncomfortable even when the character moves slowly. Lower horizontal and vertical look sensitivity separately if the game provides both controls. A small reduction is easier to evaluate than moving directly to the minimum.
- Horizontal sensitivity: controls left-right turning and can be the most noticeable setting during rapid scanning.
- Vertical sensitivity: controls looking up and down; lowering it can reduce abrupt pitch changes.
- Aim or zoom sensitivity: adjust independently if symptoms occur while aiming through a sight.
- Vehicle or flight sensitivity: some titles use separate values for driving, flying, swimming, or mounted travel.
- Camera movement speed: a distinct control in some games that changes how quickly the view responds even when look sensitivity stays unchanged.
Controller players can also check stick acceleration, response curves, and dead zones. If the camera accelerates after you move the stick, choose a slower response curve or disable acceleration when the game offers that choice. Mouse players should check any separate horizontal and vertical multipliers. These controls affect input response; they do not constitute a medical treatment.
Test field of view without assuming a “best” value
Field of view (FOV) determines how much of the game world appears across the screen. Xbox accessibility guidance recommends letting players tune FOV to their viewing conditions and discusses how wider views show more surrounding area while lower angles can reduce a “fishbowl” appearance in some situations. The guidance does not establish one universally comfortable value or whether wider or narrower is always better.

- Find FOV under Camera, Display, or Video.
- Change it in a small increment rather than moving immediately from one extreme to another.
- Stand still, rotate slowly, and then walk in a familiar area.
- Keep the value that gives you a stable-looking horizon and enough peripheral information to play safely.
If a wider view makes the edges of the image appear stretched, try a modestly narrower value. If a narrow view feels like looking through a tunnel or causes discomfort when turning, try a modestly wider value. Recheck FOV after changing resolution, aspect ratio, or display mode because the same numerical value can look different on another screen.
Compare first-person, third-person, and follow-distance choices
Perspective changes where the moving image is anchored. In first person, the entire view rotates with the character’s head or weapon. In third person, your character remains visible and may provide a steadier reference while the camera follows behind. Neither perspective is proven to be universally better.
When a game offers a choice, compare these factors:
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | What to examine | Comfort questions |
|---|---|---|
| First person | Camera bob, weapon sway, recoil, and rapid rotation near the center of the screen | Does the horizon remain stable when walking, sprinting, or aiming? |
| Third person | Camera distance, orbit speed, collision with walls, and automatic recentering | Does the visible character provide a stable reference, or does the camera swing around them? |
| Follow distance | Near, medium, or far camera placement behind the character | Does more distance reduce apparent rotation, or does it make the character and environment too small? |
Play the same short route in each view. Keep the perspective that lets you see enough of the environment without introducing new sway, orbiting, or automatic movement.
Use VR comfort options deliberately
VR can intensify visual-versus-physical mismatch because the display moves with your head while simulated locomotion moves the world. Meta’s developer documentation identifies movement method, movement speed, turn style, and optional tunnel vision as comfort choices. It does not establish one best combination for everyone.
Movement method
Choose the locomotion method that minimizes unwanted continuous motion. A title may offer smooth movement, teleportation, dash movement, or other alternatives. Test each in a quiet area before using it during combat or traversal.

Movement speed
Lower the VR movement-speed setting when available. Slower travel gives you more time to orient yourself, but it may change how quickly you can respond in the game. Keep the lowest speed that remains practical.

Try snap turning instead of smooth turning, or reduce smooth-turn speed. Snap turning rotates the view in discrete steps; smooth turning continuously moves the scene. Some players prefer one, while others find the sudden steps uncomfortable.
Tunnel vision or peripheral reduction
Optional vignette or tunnel-vision modes narrow the moving portion of the image during locomotion or turning. Enable the strongest level you can tolerate, then reduce it only if you need more peripheral visibility. A narrower view can make navigation harder, so balance comfort with awareness of obstacles.
Follow a controlled testing routine
Changing several settings at once can hide the cause of discomfort. Use a repeatable routine:
- Choose a familiar, low-risk location with a visible horizon and no combat requirement.
- Record the current settings or capture a screenshot of each menu.
- Change one control, such as Camera Shake, and play briefly.
- Stop as soon as symptoms appear or increase. Do not continue to “push through” them.
- After symptoms settle, restore the previous value if the change made you feel worse, or keep the change and test the next control another time.
- After several sessions, write down the combination that worked and apply it to other profiles or games where the same options exist.
Use the same route and activity when comparing values. Sprinting, driving, flying, swimming, ladders, slides, and scripted camera sequences may each use different movement effects, so test the situations that normally trigger symptoms.
When a game has few or no comfort settings
Not every title exposes camera shake, FOV, sensitivity, or perspective controls. Check the Accessibility, Camera, Display, Controls, and pause menus, and look for an official manual or in-game control description. A platform-level accessibility setting may not override a game’s camera behavior, so do not assume that a missing option exists elsewhere.

- Use any available third-person view or slower camera sensitivity.
- Disable every visible blur, shake, bob, sway, and speed-line option, even if the labels are under Graphics.
- Avoid movement-heavy sections until you know whether symptoms occur there.
- Take frequent breaks and stop the session when discomfort starts.
- Do not buy a headset, controller, monitor, or other product expecting it to cure game-related motion sickness; the guidance here supports adjustable game and VR options, not a hardware solution.
What to do when symptoms begin
Pause or stop the game and allow the symptoms to settle. The available guidance does not test a specific recovery routine for video games. The NHS gives general travel-motion-sickness advice such as getting fresh air and looking at a fixed point; because that page concerns travel, treat those suggestions as general context rather than proven game-specific treatment.
Do not resume simply because a pause menu is open if you still feel unwell. Seek qualified medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, unusual for you, or accompanied by concerning signs. A clinician can help distinguish motion sickness from another condition.
Diagnose the trigger by symptom and situation
| When symptoms appear | First settings to test | Why these are relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Walking or sprinting in first person | Head bob, camera bob, weapon sway, motion blur | These effects add repeated vertical or smeared motion to an otherwise stable scene. |
| Explosions, impacts, or taking damage | Camera shake, screen shake, recoil, view kick | Short, involuntary camera movements can be stronger than ordinary walking motion. |
| Turning or aiming | Horizontal and vertical sensitivity, camera acceleration, smooth-turn speed | Rapid rotation can make the visual scene move faster than your body does. |
| Driving, flying, swimming, or scripted travel | Vehicle sensitivity, automatic camera, speed lines, radial blur, FOV | These modes may use separate movement and camera effects. |
| VR locomotion | Movement method, movement speed, turn style, tunnel vision | These are the primary comfort choices identified for VR movement. |
| Discomfort at all times | Perspective, follow distance, FOV, then all camera effects | A persistent mismatch may require changing the overall viewpoint rather than one effect. |
Limits of these adjustments
Game menus differ by title, platform, edition, and software version. A setting may affect only one camera mode or one activity. A change that helps during walking can make vehicle sections harder to control, and a lower FOV can reduce peripheral awareness while a higher FOV can exaggerate edge distortion. Keep notes about the context in which a setting helps.

No universal FOV target, sensitivity value, or guaranteed prevention method is established by the guidance used here. The recommendations support player control and comfort; they do not prove that any single option prevents symptoms. Stop playing when symptoms worsen, even if you have not finished testing every setting.
Accessibility design and player control
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 states: “The goal of this XAG is to ensure that players can pause or completely stop any content that scrolls, blinks, auto-updates, or otherwise moves.” For camera comfort, that principle means a game should let players control or disable movement rather than forcing continuous visual motion.
When evaluating a game for yourself, look for independent controls, clear labels, immediate preview or application, and the ability to pause during intense movement. A title that exposes shake, bob, blur, sensitivity, perspective, and FOV separately gives you more ways to find a tolerable combination than one that offers only a single “comfort” switch.
A practical decision path
- Start with effects: disable shake, bob, sway, blur, speed lines, and distortion.
- Then slow input: reduce look sensitivity, camera speed, and acceleration; disable automatic centering.
- Change the viewpoint: compare first person with third person and test follow distance.
- Fine-tune FOV: adjust in small increments, keeping the value that looks stable and preserves usable visibility.
- For VR: test locomotion method, movement speed, turn style, and tunnel vision separately.
- Validate safely: use a familiar route, stop at the first sign of worsening symptoms, and keep a record of the settings that help.
This sequence moves from the least disruptive visual changes to broader camera and movement changes. It also preserves a clear way to undo each adjustment.
