Start in the game’s Accessibility, Video, Camera and Audio menus. Disable motion blur, head or camera bob, weapon sway, camera shake, camera roll and automatic camera movement; then adjust field of view and sensitivity in small steps. For jump scares, lower effects and master volume, enable subtitles, and use content warnings, visual filters or scene-skip controls when the game provides them.

Stop as soon as dizziness, nausea, headache, sweating, visual disturbance or disorientation begins. A short break, fresh air and a fixed visual point are safer than trying to push through worsening symptoms.

Use this order for the quickest improvement

  1. Set a comfortable baseline: Sit far enough away to see the entire display without leaning toward it, keep the room softly lit and begin with a short test segment rather than a long session.
  2. Remove artificial camera movement: Turn off motion blur, head bob, weapon sway, camera shake, camera roll, sprint-related field-of-view animation, automatic camera recentering and forced camera transitions.
  3. Tune field of view and sensitivity: Change field of view (FOV) in small increments at your normal sitting distance. Reduce mouse or stick sensitivity if rapid turns are the trigger.
  4. Create a stable reference: Enable a static crosshair, dot or other centered reticle when available.
  5. Separate jump-scare channels: Lower effects and master volume, keep dialogue understandable with subtitles or captions, and look for content warnings, photosensitivity options, visual filters and bypass controls.
  6. Take symptoms seriously: Pause immediately when symptoms start. Resume only when you feel normal.

There is no universal “best” FOV, sensitivity or volume level. Screen size, viewing distance, game camera design and individual sensitivity all change the result.

Why horror games can make you feel sick

Motion sickness can occur when what your eyes see does not match signals from the vestibular system and the rest of your body. A first-person game can show rapid camera rotation, acceleration, bobbing or zooming while your body remains still. The mismatch can produce dizziness, nausea, headache, sweating, cold sensations, pallor or vomiting.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines identify general screen and camera movement as a potential barrier because it can elicit motion sickness during play. The relevant controls are not limited to one “motion sickness” switch: blur, bob, sway, FOV changes and automatic movement each alter what the eyes perceive.

Jump scares create a different problem. Their impact may come from several channels at once:

  • A sudden, high-volume sound effect or musical sting.
  • A flash, rapid contrast change or abrupt visual cut.
  • A sudden camera turn, zoom, shake or forced movement.
  • Disturbing imagery, gore or an unexpected scene transition.

Because these triggers are separate, lowering only one may leave the others unchanged. Treat camera motion, sound, flashing and disturbing content as different accessibility questions.

Build a comfortable baseline before changing settings

Control the viewing environment

Begin when you can stop easily, not during a long session or a difficult encounter. Sit far enough from the display that you can see the whole frame without leaning forward. Soft, even room lighting is preferable to playing in complete darkness or with a bright light directly behind the screen. Keep the first test short so you can identify a problem before symptoms accumulate.

Avoid marathon sessions while you are calibrating. Fatigue makes it harder to distinguish ordinary tension from the early signs of motion sickness, and horror games often combine darkness, rapid movement and sustained attention.

Record your starting point

Before changing several options, note the current camera, display and audio settings. Change one setting at a time and test for a few minutes. This gives you a usable cause-and-effect signal; changing FOV, sensitivity, blur and shake simultaneously can make it impossible to tell which adjustment helped or hurt.

Remove artificial camera movement first

Open the game’s Accessibility, Video, Camera or Gameplay menus. Labels vary by title, platform and version, so a setting may be grouped under a different heading.

Motion blur

Turn motion blur off as a first test. Blur overlays or smears the image during camera movement. Some players find that removing it makes motion easier to track; others prefer a low setting. Test the game with blur disabled before deciding whether any amount is comfortable.

Head bob and camera bob

Disable head bob, camera bob or walking-bob effects. These simulate the vertical movement of a character’s head even when your own head is still. If the game offers a slider instead of an on/off switch, start at the lowest value.

Weapon sway and viewmodel movement

Turn off weapon sway, hand sway or viewmodel movement when the option exists. A weapon or hand moving independently at the bottom of the screen can add a second visual motion signal during every step and turn.

Screen shake and camera shake

Set screen shake and camera shake to zero or the lowest available level. Explosion effects, melee impacts and scripted scares can otherwise move the entire image unexpectedly.

Camera roll and forced transitions

Disable camera roll, tilt, cinematic camera movement and forced transitions where possible. A brief roll or a sudden scripted push toward an object can be more disorienting than ordinary walking because you cannot control or anticipate it.

Automatic camera movement

Turn off automatic camera recentering, auto-aim camera pulls and other systems that move the view without a direct mouse or stick input. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance specifically treats automatic camera movement as a potential barrier for motion-sensitive players.

Sprint FOV animation

Some games widen the FOV while sprinting and then narrow it when you stop. If this expansion and contraction feels like a zoom effect, disable sprint FOV animation or use the least pronounced option. Keep the static FOV itself separate from the sprint animation when the menu allows both to be changed.

Tune field of view without chasing a magic number

FOV controls how much of the scene is visible horizontally or vertically, depending on the game and platform. A wider value can reduce the sensation of being trapped in a narrow tunnel, but an excessive value can create a “fishbowl” appearance: objects near the edges stretch and movement may feel faster. A narrow value can reduce edge distortion for some players but may feel claustrophobic or amplify the apparent motion during turns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft notes that adjustable FOV lets players choose an angle based partly on sitting distance and other personal factors. That is why a value that feels comfortable on a television across a room may feel wrong on a monitor close to your face.

  1. Set the game to its default FOV and play a calm, familiar area for a few minutes.
  2. Change FOV by a small increment, not a dramatic jump.
  3. Walk, turn and sprint briefly at your normal viewing distance.
  4. Keep the setting that produces the steadiest image. If a wider FOV creates a fishbowl effect or discomfort, move back toward the previous value.
  5. Repeat only if you are symptom-free. Do not keep experimenting once dizziness or nausea begins.

FOV is personal and game-dependent. The available range, whether the value is horizontal or vertical, and its effect on console and PC versions are not stated consistently across titles.

Adjust sensitivity, acceleration and smoothing

Rapid turns are a common trigger when the camera moves much faster than expected. Lower mouse sensitivity or stick sensitivity in small steps if quick pans make you feel unwell. If the game separates horizontal and vertical sensitivity, change the axis that causes the problem first.

Some games provide aiming or camera acceleration, response curves and smoothing. Test acceleration on and off for a short period; neither state is universally better. Acceleration can make slow movements easier while adding an unexpected speed increase at larger inputs. Smoothing can reduce abrupt changes but may also introduce a delayed or “laggy” feeling that causes players to overcorrect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the change that makes starts and stops predictable. A steady, controllable turn is more useful than a nominally fast setting.

Use a stable visual reference

If the game offers a static crosshair, central dot or other reticle, enable it and keep it fixed while the world moves. A stable element can give the eyes a reference point during walking and turning. Benefit varies by person and game, so treat it as a brief experiment rather than a guaranteed treatment.

Choose a reticle that is visible without being bright or animated. If a pulsing, expanding or hit-confirmation reticle becomes another source of movement, select a static style or disable the animation.

Reduce the sound component of jump scares

Lower the right volume controls

Open the game’s Audio menu before entering a high-intensity section. Lower Effects first because jump scares commonly use a sudden sting, impact or creature sound. Lower Master as well if effects remain too strong. If the game provides separate sliders, preserve dialogue or speech at a level you can understand while reducing effects, music and ambience according to your tolerance.

A headset with a convenient inline or on-ear volume control can make quick adjustments easier. It does not remove visual scares and does not treat motion sickness; it is simply a way to change volume without searching through menus.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Keep speech understandable

Enable subtitles or captions so you can lower spoken audio without losing instructions or story information. If the game offers sound captions, they may also identify off-screen events, but caption presentation differs by title. Disable caption effects that flash, animate or occupy too much of the screen if those become distracting.

Check the hardware and system volume separately

If a scare is still painfully loud after lowering the in-game effects slider, check the operating-system or television volume and any headset amplifier. Make one adjustment at a time so you do not accidentally compensate by turning the game back up later.

Use content warnings, filters and bypass options

Search the Accessibility, Gameplay, Audio and Content Warning menus before starting the campaign. Look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Warnings before a mission, cutscene or potentially disturbing scene.
  • Scene descriptions that explain what is about to happen.
  • Gore, dismemberment or disturbing-content filters.
  • Options to skip, bypass or shorten a cutscene.
  • Controls that reduce sudden camera movement or forced transitions.
  • Photosensitivity or reduced-flash modes.

EA’s official accessibility information for Dead Space gives a concrete example: its settings include subtitles and a Show Content Warning option before scenes that could be potentially disturbing. Other games may use different labels or provide fewer controls.

A warning supports informed choice; it does not guarantee that the scene will feel comfortable. A bypass may also skip story information or gameplay context, so check whether the game lets you review a description or replay the scene later.

Reduce flashing and visual overload

Photosensitivity controls matter even when your primary complaint is nausea. Repetitive flashing, intense contrast and rapid light changes can affect people with photosensitivity, migraines or sensory-processing differences. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 118 states that games should not include images or experiences that might cause adverse reactions such as seizures or migraine episodes during gameplay.

Enable a Photosensitivity, Reduced Flash or equivalent mode when available. If no dedicated option exists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lower brightness or display contrast if the game or display allows it.
  • Reduce heavy post-processing, bloom, chromatic aberration and depth-of-field effects when those toggles are offered.
  • Disable flashing screen effects or reduce their intensity.
  • Increase room lighting slightly so a bright frame is not surrounded by complete darkness.
  • Use warnings to avoid scenes with rapid flashes rather than relying on a warning after exposure.

Apple’s reduced-motion guidance similarly recommends changing or disabling parallax, animated blur and depth-of-field effects when motion needs to be reduced. The exact controls in a horror game may differ, but the principle is the same: remove unnecessary animated layers instead of trying to endure them.

What to do when symptoms begin

NHS guidance lists dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, feeling cold and pallor among motion-sickness symptoms. Sweating, visual disturbance and disorientation are also reasons to stop and assess how you feel.

  1. Pause or quit immediately; do not wait for the next checkpoint.
  2. Look at a fixed point in the room rather than at the moving game image.
  3. Get fresh air, sit upright and breathe slowly.
  4. Take a real break instead of switching immediately to another moving screen.
  5. Resume only if symptoms have fully settled, and shorten the next test.

If symptoms are persistent, severe, unusual for you or continue after stopping, seek medical advice. Do not use game settings as a substitute for evaluation of a medical condition.

Diagnose the trigger by symptom

What you notice First controls to test Why this order helps
Nausea or dizziness during walking and turning Disable motion blur, head bob, weapon sway, camera shake and roll; then lower sensitivity. These settings remove layered movement before you change the game’s viewing angle.
Discomfort mainly while sprinting Disable sprint FOV animation and reduce sensitivity or acceleration. Running often combines camera bob, FOV expansion and faster rotation.
Disorientation during scripted scenes Disable forced camera transitions, automatic recentering and cinematic movement; use a scene bypass if provided. Uncontrolled movement is harder to anticipate than ordinary input.
Symptoms near the edge of the screen Adjust FOV gradually toward a narrower value and test again. A very wide FOV can create edge distortion or a fishbowl effect.
Startle, panic or headache after a scare Lower effects and master volume, enable subtitles, and use content warnings or skips. Sound, visual movement and disturbing content may each need a separate control.
Discomfort around flashes or high contrast Enable photosensitivity or reduced-flash mode; reduce brightness and post-processing. Flashing can be a distinct visual trigger even when camera motion is acceptable.

Evaluate a horror game before committing to it

When choosing a new title, inspect its accessibility information or pause-menu settings before buying or starting a long campaign. Use these questions as a practical comparison checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Area What to verify Why it matters
Camera control Can head bob, shake, blur, sway, roll, sprint FOV and automatic movement be adjusted independently? Independent controls let you remove one trigger without sacrificing every visual effect.
Scare control Are there content warnings, gore filters, scene descriptions, bypasses or cutscene skips? Advance information and avoidance are more useful than a warning after the scare.
Audio control Can effects, music, dialogue and ambience be changed separately? Are subtitles or sound captions available? You can reduce sudden audio while retaining speech and navigation cues.
Visual safety Is there a photosensitivity or reduced-flash mode? Can brightness and post-processing be reduced? Flashing and heavy effects can trigger problems independently of camera movement.
Recovery Can you pause freely, and are checkpoints frequent enough to stop without losing substantial progress? A player who can stop immediately is less likely to push through symptoms.

Menu names, available sliders and behavior can differ by platform, edition and software version. Treat a feature list as a guide to investigate, not a promise that every setting behaves identically on every system.

Common mistakes that make the problem worse

  • Changing everything at once: You lose the ability to identify the helpful setting. Change one control, test briefly and record the result.
  • Assuming a wider FOV is always better: It may reduce tunnel vision for one player and create fishbowl distortion for another.
  • Lowering only master volume: This can make dialogue and navigation cues too quiet while a particularly sharp effect remains startling. Use separate effects and dialogue controls when available.
  • Playing in a completely dark room: The contrast between a bright flash and the surrounding room can feel harsher.
  • Trying to “get used to it” while already nauseated: Symptoms can escalate. Stop, recover and retest later at a lower intensity.
  • Treating warnings as protection: A warning gives you a choice; it does not neutralize the scene.
  • Relying on a headset alone: Quick volume control helps with loud audio but cannot remove flashing images, forced camera movement or visual jump scares.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

Health guidance on motion sickness generally covers transport and simulator contexts rather than every horror-game mechanic. It supports reducing motion, looking at a fixed point, getting fresh air and taking breaks, but it does not establish one FOV, sensitivity or graphics setting that works for everyone.

No reliable topic-wide prevalence figure establishes how many horror-game players experience motion sickness, so a percentage would be misleading. Individual response depends on the display, viewing distance, camera design, session length and personal sensitivity.

The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: remove uncontrolled camera movement first, tune FOV and sensitivity gradually, address audio and visual scare channels separately, and stop at the first symptoms. If a game lacks the controls you need, changing to a title with better camera, warning, audio and recovery options may be more effective than forcing yourself to adapt.
