The most reliable way to cut iPhone video data use is to combine system and app controls: turn on Low Data Mode, select a lower cellular playback quality in each streaming app, download over Wi-Fi, disable cellular access for apps that do not need it, and check which apps are actually consuming data. There is no universal “gigabytes per hour” figure because resolution, encoding, connection speed, screen size and the service all change the result. The controls below work on current iPhones, although labels and locations can differ by iOS version, carrier, country, device and app version.
Set the iPhone-wide limit first
Low Data Mode is the best starting point because it gives iOS and participating apps a system-level signal to reduce network work. Apple says it can lower streaming quality and pause background tasks such as updates, automatic downloads and backups. Apps decide how they respond, so it does not guarantee a fixed saving or force every service to use the same bitrate.
- Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions).
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Turn on Low Data Mode.
- On a 5G iPhone, open Data Mode and choose Low Data Mode.
Low Data Mode can be enabled separately for cellular and for individual Wi-Fi networks. If you also want to conserve a metered or slow Wi-Fi connection, open that network’s details in Settings > Wi-Fi and enable its Low Data Mode option. The exact labels depend on the iOS release; Apple’s current support material describes iOS 27, while older releases may place the switches differently.
What Low Data Mode changes
Apple documents examples of app behavior rather than a single universal rule. Music can disable high-quality streaming and automatic downloads; Podcasts can reduce feed updates and download episodes only over Wi-Fi; FaceTime can adjust its video bitrate. A third-party video service may lower quality, defer background work or do nothing visible. Check the service’s own settings and the picture you receive instead of assuming the system switch changed every stream.

When to turn it off
Low Data Mode is a conservation setting, not a permanent quality setting. Turn it off for a large download, a video call or a time when you specifically need the highest quality, then re-enable it before returning to cellular streaming. Background updates and backups that were deferred can run later, so watch for a burst of activity after disabling the mode.
Lower playback quality inside the streaming app
System controls and app controls complement each other. The app chooses the stream, so a service-specific data-saver option is usually the clearest way to request a lower resolution or bitrate.
YouTube: choose Data saver for mobile networks
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings > Video quality preferences.
- Under mobile networks, choose Data saver.
For a single video, open the player settings, tap Quality, and select Data saver. YouTube describes this as lower picture quality; the delivered quality can still vary with connection speed, screen size and the quality of the uploaded source. A video that looks soft on a large iPhone may be using less data than the same title at a higher setting, but YouTube does not publish one fixed amount that applies to every video.
Apple TV: restrict cellular or avoid High Quality
- Open Settings > Apps > TV. The route can vary by iOS version.
- To prevent cellular playback entirely, turn off Use Cellular Data.
- If cellular playback is allowed, set the cellular quality to Automatic rather than High Quality.
Apple says High Quality requires a faster connection and uses more data. Automatic lets the app adapt instead of always requesting its highest cellular setting. If you need predictable cellular usage, the Wi-Fi-only option is stricter than relying on automatic adaptation.
Other services
Look in each app’s Playback, Video quality, Cellular data, Downloads or Data saver section. Some services offer separate choices for Wi-Fi and mobile networks; others provide only a general quality setting. Do not assume that an iPhone setting fixes an app that ignores Low Data Mode, and do not assume that changing one app changes another.
| Control | Where to change it | Effect and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Low Data Mode | Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options | Signals iOS and participating apps to reduce quality and background network work; behavior differs by app. |
| YouTube Data saver | YouTube > profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences | Requests lower picture quality on mobile networks; exact quality still depends on the stream and connection. |
| Apple TV Automatic | Settings > Apps > TV | Avoids the always-highest cellular setting; High Quality uses more data. |
| Cellular disabled for an app | Settings > Cellular, then the app list | Strongest cellular guarantee, but the app works only on Wi-Fi for streaming and other network features. |
Download on Wi-Fi and stop previews on cellular
Offline viewing moves the data transfer to a Wi-Fi session. It does not make the video free: the file uses data when downloaded and occupies local storage. It is useful when you know what you will watch and the service permits offline playback.
YouTube downloads
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings > Background & downloads.
- Enable Download over Wi-Fi only.
Choose a sensible download quality. A higher setting takes more data to fetch and more device storage. Offline download eligibility varies by country, title and membership, so a download control may not appear for every account or video. If a title cannot be downloaded, lower-quality streaming and Wi-Fi viewing are the remaining options.

Disable YouTube feed playback on mobile data
YouTube can play previews while you scroll. In the app’s Playback in feeds setting, choose Wi-Fi only or Off. The service documents this control in its iOS help page: Use the inline player. Wi-Fi only preserves previews at home or work without allowing them to start over mobile data; Off removes the previews altogether.
Plan an offline routine
- Connect to a trusted, unrestricted Wi-Fi network before downloading.
- Start downloads while the phone is charging if you are fetching several episodes.
- Check free storage before selecting a high download quality.
- Open the app’s Downloads area while still online if the service requires periodic verification.
- Delete watched files so storage does not become the new constraint.
A five-minute setup that covers most leaks
If you want a quick sequence rather than a long-term experiment, use this order:
- Enable Low Data Mode for the cellular line. If a particular Wi-Fi network is metered, enable it for that network separately.
- Open every video app you use and set its mobile quality to Data saver, Automatic or the equivalent lower setting. In Apple TV, turn off cellular entirely if you never need it away from Wi-Fi.
- Set downloads to Wi-Fi only and change feed or autoplay previews to Wi-Fi only or Off.
- In Settings > Cellular, switch off cellular access for apps that should never stream on the go.
- Check the app list and the carrier’s current-period total after a few days. The first check tells you which app changed; the second tells you how much of your allowance remains.
This layered approach matters because no single switch controls every transfer. Low Data Mode can reduce background work, an app setting controls the stream, and the per-app cellular switch provides the hard stop.
Find the apps using the most cellular data
Use the iPhone’s per-app counters to identify the cause rather than guessing which service is responsible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Scroll to the app list and inspect each app’s cellular total.
- Turn off the switch for a streaming app that should never work over mobile data.
- Repeat for video-heavy social, browser or cloud-storage apps if their totals are unexpectedly large.
Turning off an app’s cellular switch blocks its mobile connection, not its Wi-Fi connection. It can also stop non-video functions such as sign-in refreshes, comments, messages or background synchronization until Wi-Fi is available.
Reset the iPhone counter for a clean test
At the bottom of the Cellular settings page, use Reset Statistics at the start of a tracking period. Record the date first, because the counter does not automatically align with your carrier’s billing cycle. A reset erases the phone’s historical breakdown; it does not change what your carrier has already measured.
For a useful comparison, reset before changing one group of settings, use the same app and similar viewing conditions, then inspect the counter again. This can show whether a setting helped on your phone without pretending the result applies to every service or video. Avoid changing quality, Wi-Fi behavior and several app permissions at once if you need to know which change mattered.

Use the carrier for the billable total
Apple recommends the carrier’s account or app for the most accurate current-period usage total. The iPhone counter is best for finding which apps are responsible and for comparing your own before-and-after settings. Carrier totals can include plan rules, roaming or network accounting that the handset view does not show.

When Wi-Fi is weak, Wi-Fi Assist can use cellular data so an app continues to load. If usage seems surprising while the status bar shows Wi-Fi, inspect Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Assist. Apple says the feature may switch to cellular when Wi-Fi performs poorly, but also says it does not activate with some third-party apps that stream audio or video. Treat it as a possible contributor, not an automatic explanation for every streaming total.
If your allowance is very small, turning Wi-Fi Assist off removes that fallback path. The trade-off is that pages or streams may pause when Wi-Fi is poor instead of quietly continuing over cellular. Because Apple excludes some streaming apps from the feature, compare the app-level counters before concluding that Wi-Fi Assist caused the increase.
Choose a setting based on your risk tolerance
| Your priority | Recommended combination | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Use as little cellular data as possible | Low Data Mode, app quality set to Data saver or Automatic, Wi-Fi-only downloads, previews off, and cellular disabled for selected apps | Lower picture quality and no streaming from those apps when away from Wi-Fi. |
| Keep streaming available but reduce waste | Low Data Mode, lower cellular quality, Wi-Fi-only downloads and feed playback set to Wi-Fi only | Some streams will look less detailed and previews will not play on cellular. |
| Protect a very small allowance | Disable cellular for video apps, download in advance on Wi-Fi, and monitor the carrier total | Requires planning and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. |
| Preserve maximum quality | Leave quality controls high and use Wi-Fi for playback whenever possible | High-quality cellular video can consume substantially more data than a lower setting; the exact difference is service-dependent. |
Troubleshoot data use that still looks too high
The picture did not change after Low Data Mode
Check the streaming app’s own cellular quality setting. Low Data Mode is a request that apps can interpret differently, whereas an in-app Data saver or Wi-Fi-only switch is explicit. Also verify that you changed the cellular profile rather than only a particular Wi-Fi network.
An app keeps using cellular after you expected Wi-Fi-only behavior
Return to Settings > Cellular and confirm the app’s switch is off. Then check whether a separate download, autoplay or background setting is enabled in the app. A previously queued download can begin when its own Wi-Fi-only rule is not enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsage rises while the iPhone appears connected to Wi-Fi
Inspect Wi-Fi Assist, test the Wi-Fi connection in the same location and compare the app’s cellular counter with the carrier’s current-period figure. A weak access point, a captive portal or a dropped Wi-Fi connection can make the phone fall back to cellular. Remember that Apple excludes some third-party streaming apps from Wi-Fi Assist, so the feature is not always involved.
The carrier and iPhone totals disagree
Check that both measurements cover the same dates and that roaming or dual-SIM usage is accounted for. The iPhone counter is a device estimate by app; the carrier’s system is the authoritative source for the billed period. Resetting the phone counter does not reset the carrier record.

Downloads consume more data or storage than expected
Lower the download quality, remove old files and confirm Download over Wi-Fi only is enabled. A high-quality episode can be much larger than a lower-quality one, and availability or file-size choices can differ by title. Do not start a large download on cellular merely because the app displays it in an offline queue.
A quality or download option is missing
Check the app version, your country, the title and any membership requirement. Services do not expose identical controls to every account, and interfaces change. If the option is unavailable, use the controls that are present: Low Data Mode, a cellular block for that app, Wi-Fi viewing or a different eligible title.

Plan and roaming considerations
If careful settings still leave you above your allowance, compare mobile data plans as a last step. Compare the included allowance, throttling policy, roaming treatment and hotspot terms rather than looking only at the headline number. A larger plan changes how much data you can use before restrictions; it does not make an individual stream smaller.
When traveling, confirm which line is using cellular data and whether the carrier counts roaming separately. The phone’s app list can identify the heavy user, but the carrier account remains the reliable place to check current-period and roaming totals.
What these controls cannot guarantee
- There is no stable data-per-hour number that applies to every service, resolution, codec, advertisement, live stream or network condition.
- Low Data Mode does not force identical behavior across apps.
- Lower quality can reduce data use but cannot eliminate cellular traffic from advertisements, thumbnails, sign-in checks or other app functions.
- Offline viewing depends on the service, country, title and sometimes membership; downloaded files also use storage.
- Older iOS releases may show different paths, and carriers or regional settings can expose different options.
If your normal viewing still exceeds your allowance after these changes, comparing mobile data plans may be a practical final step. Compare the allowance, throttling policy, roaming terms and hotspot rules; a larger allowance changes how much you can use, not how much each video consumes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Low Data Mode reduce video quality in every iPhone app?
No. Apple describes it as a system signal that participating apps can handle differently. For a predictable result, set the cellular quality or data-saver option inside the streaming service itself.
How do I stop streaming apps from using mobile data?
Open Settings > Cellular, find the app and turn its switch off. It will still work on Wi-Fi, but cellular-dependent features such as streaming, comments or background synchronization may stop away from Wi-Fi.

Can I watch downloaded videos without any internet connection?
Usually, if the service supports offline playback and the title is eligible. Some apps periodically require an online check, and eligibility can vary by country, title and membership.
Why does my iPhone show less data than my carrier?
The iPhone and carrier may use different measurement windows or accounting rules, especially with roaming, dual-SIM lines or plan-specific treatment. Use the carrier’s current-period figure for billing decisions.
Should I turn off Wi-Fi Assist to save data?
If your allowance is very limited and you often use weak Wi-Fi, disabling it can remove one path for fallback cellular use. Apple says it does not activate with some third-party audio and video streaming apps, so inspect your app-level totals before deciding.
Will lowering quality stop all cellular charges while I watch?
No. It requests a smaller stream, but the app can still transfer advertisements, interface elements and account data. To guarantee that a particular app cannot use cellular, turn off its cellular switch in Settings.
How do I lower video quality on mobile data?
Use the app’s mobile-network quality control. In YouTube, choose Settings > Video quality preferences > Data saver, or select Quality > Data saver for one video. Apple TV offers Automatic instead of High Quality, and other services use their own labels.
Can I download videos on Wi-Fi and watch them later?
Yes, when the service and title support downloads. Enable the app’s Wi-Fi-only download setting, choose a quality that fits your storage, and remember that some downloads require periodic verification or are limited by country or membership.
Why is a video app still using data after I enabled Low Data Mode?
Low Data Mode does not impose identical behavior on every app. Check the app’s own quality, autoplay and download settings, then turn off its cellular switch if you need a firm Wi-Fi-only rule.
