Start with your phone’s app-by-app cellular usage report, then turn on its low-data control and restrict cellular access for apps that do not need it. For AI features, check whether the specific function processes requests on the device or in the cloud: on-device processing can avoid a cloud request for supported features, but it does not make every AI function work offline.
What actually uses mobile data on an AI-connected phone?
AI is not one network behavior. Some functions process requests on the phone; others send data to cloud services, and some platforms use a mix depending on the function or request. Separately, apps can use cellular data for background activity, downloads, backups, streaming, and other tasks whether or not you are actively using an AI feature.
That distinction matters when you are on a limited plan. Restricting an app’s cellular access can reduce its overall cellular traffic, but it may also affect non-AI features, notifications, or timely updates. Choosing on-device processing, where the feature offers it, targets the AI function more specifically. Neither approach guarantees that every task happens offline.

The official platform guidance cited here describes available settings and processing modes, but does not quantify the data used by a typical AI prompt, voice session, or image-editing request. There is no substantiated universal megabyte figure to use: consumption can depend on the app, request, device, network conditions, and measurement period.

So treat high cellular use as a phone-and-app settings question first, not proof that an AI feature is responsible. The usage report can help identify which apps used data during a period, but it does not separate every AI request from an app’s other activity. To determine whether a particular setting helps, note your starting usage, change one or two settings, and compare a similar period afterward.
Compare the controls before changing them
| Control | Scope | What happens in the foreground? | Exceptions and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone: cellular access per app | Selected apps | An app with cellular data turned off uses Wi-Fi only for that service, according to Apple’s iPhone cellular settings guide. | Leave cellular access on for apps that need to work when you are away from Wi-Fi. |
| iPhone: Low Data Mode | Cellular data options for the connection | Apps can still be used, but some automatic or background activity is reduced or paused. | Effects vary by app and service; see Apple’s Low Data Mode guide, published October 15, 2025. |
| Android: Data Saver | Background data on a metered network, with an instruction to apps to use less data in the foreground where possible | Apps remain available; foreground data use may be reduced where an app supports it. | You can allow selected apps to use background metered data. See Android’s Data Saver documentation. |
| AI feature: on-device-only processing | A supported AI feature or set of features | Only the supported functions are covered; other app activity may still use cellular data. | Cloud-dependent features may require internet access or become unavailable. Samsung says availability varies by device and software version in its Galaxy AI support guidance. |
The controls differ along four useful axes. First, scope: a per-app switch blocks cellular access for that app, while Low Data Mode and Data Saver affect broader activity, and an AI processing option may apply only to a feature. Second, foreground use: Data Saver primarily restricts background traffic and asks apps to use less data when open where possible; it is not a guarantee that foreground use will stop. Third, exceptions: Android allows selected apps to use background metered data, while iPhone users can leave cellular access enabled for selected apps. Finally, feature impact: background refresh, downloads, updates, streaming quality, notifications, or cloud AI functions may change depending on the control.
Also consider the network context. A phone can use cellular when it is away from Wi-Fi, but an unreliable Wi-Fi connection may lead an iPhone with Wi-Fi Assist enabled to switch traffic to cellular. A Wi-Fi connection may itself be metered, so the labels and behavior of these controls do not mean that every Wi-Fi network is unlimited. Use settings that match the connection and the plan you are trying to protect.
Find which apps use cellular data
Begin with the phone’s usage report rather than guessing which AI feature is responsible. Look for the reporting period shown on the device, then identify apps whose cellular use is unexpectedly high or whose background use is not worth the convenience. A large app total can reflect several types of activity, not just an AI interaction, so use it to choose where to investigate rather than as a per-feature measurement.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Review cellular data use by app. Apple notes that the displayed statistics may not match your carrier’s current billing period.
- For an app that does not need to connect away from Wi-Fi, turn off its cellular data access in this screen. That app’s service will then use Wi-Fi only.
- Check Wi-Fi Assist near the bottom of the Cellular settings. Apple says this is on by default and can switch to cellular when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, which may increase cellular use.
For the most accurate total for your current billing period, Apple advises contacting your carrier. You can reset device statistics to establish a new measurement period, but align that period with your carrier’s cycle if you want the figures to be directly useful for tracking a monthly allowance. Before resetting, note the existing numbers if you want to compare them later.
On Android
- Open Settings and look for Network, Connections, or Data usage; then open the mobile-data usage report. A common route is Settings > Network/Connections > Data usage, but manufacturers and Android versions use different menu names.
- Review the apps listed and note which ones are using mobile data, especially apps whose background activity is not important to you.
- If the path does not match your phone, search Settings for data usage or Data Saver.
Usage reports are a way to identify likely sources and compare periods on the same device; they do not establish how many megabytes a particular AI action will use in another app or on another phone. If you compare a before-and-after period, keep your routine and the length of the period as similar as practical. A period with much more video streaming, navigation, or app use would not be a fair test of a small settings change.
Turn on the system-wide low-data control
iPhone: use Low Data Mode
Apple provides Low Data Mode under cellular data options. When enabled, it pauses automatic updates and background tasks while the iPhone is not connected to Wi-Fi. Apple’s separate guide also describes reduced background app refresh, lower streaming quality, paused automatic downloads and backups, and paused updates for some services. The exact effects vary by app or service, so check the apps you depend on after enabling it.

Use Settings > Cellular, open the cellular data options for the connection, and turn on Low Data Mode. If you use more than one cellular line, check the options for the line carrying your data. The setting is intended to limit data use on that connection; it does not mean every app or AI feature is offline.
Think of Low Data Mode as a broad reduction in automatic activity, not a precise switch for one app or AI request. It can be a good first change if you want fewer background transfers without manually disabling cellular access for every app. If an update, backup, or download can wait until Wi-Fi, the pause may be useful; if you expect media to stream at its usual quality or an app to refresh immediately, the trade-off may be noticeable.
Android: use Data Saver
Android’s Data Saver is designed for a metered network. When it is enabled, the system blocks background data and signals apps to use less data in the foreground where possible. It does not promise that foreground use will stop, so opening a data-heavy app can still use mobile data.
Search Settings for Data Saver and enable it. If the menu differs on your phone, use Settings search or find Data usage first. Android’s documentation explains that you can allow specific apps to use background data on a metered connection despite the restriction; the exact menu for managing exceptions can vary by device.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11That exception is useful when you want the system-wide restriction for most apps but need one service to remain connected in the background. It is also a reason to review exceptions if usage remains high: an app allowed to use background metered data can keep doing so under Data Saver. Keep an exception only when the timely background connection is worth the data trade-off.
Keep cellular access for functions that need to work now
System-wide restrictions are blunt instruments if every app is treated the same. Before turning off cellular access or background data, decide which functions must work when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Messaging, maps, security tools, or other services where a delayed connection would cause a problem may deserve an exception. The right list depends on how you use the phone, not on whether an app happens to include AI.
On iPhone, use the per-app switches in Settings > Cellular for apps that can wait for Wi-Fi. On Android, use Data Saver’s app exceptions when a particular app needs background metered data. Test essential functions after changing the settings: a restriction that saves data but prevents a time-sensitive alert or a needed map update may be the wrong trade-off.

Low-data controls also have side effects beyond AI. A delayed backup or download may be acceptable on a metered plan, while reduced streaming quality or slower background refresh may not be. If an app behaves differently after the change, consider whether that is a predictable consequence of its reduced background activity before assuming the phone has malfunctioned.

If you turn off cellular access for an iPhone app, its service uses Wi-Fi only; away from Wi-Fi, that can affect the app’s functions beyond AI. On Android, Data Saver targets background data and may encourage lower foreground use, but apps that are open can still connect. A small set of targeted restrictions is easier to evaluate and reverse than a broad change whose effects are unclear.
Check how each AI feature processes requests
Look up the processing mode for the specific AI feature you use, rather than assuming that all AI on one phone works the same way. An on-device option can reduce the need for a cloud request for the functions it covers. It does not control unrelated app traffic, and cloud-dependent functions can stop working or be unavailable when cloud processing is disabled.
When checking a feature, ask three practical questions: does the setting apply to the function you actually use, does the feature still work without its cloud component, and does the setting affect other app activity? The answer may differ between two functions in the same suite. A platform’s general description of on-device models is useful context, but it does not establish that every request in every feature can be completed offline.
Samsung Galaxy AI
Samsung’s support guidance identifies some functions, including translation and certain message features, as on-device, while it lists auto formatting, summarizing, auto corrections, and image editing as cloud-based examples. Samsung says the Process data only on device control can disable some cloud-based processing; some cloud-based features require internet access. Feature availability varies by Galaxy device and software version, so confirm the options on the phone and for the function you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSamsung specifically states: “Live Translate, however, makes use of on-device AI only.” That statement applies to Live Translate in Samsung’s guidance; it should not be generalized to other translation apps or AI features.
If you enable the device-only option, check whether the specific cloud-based features you use still appear and function as expected. You may be trading away some capability for less reliance on cloud processing. The setting is about AI processing, not a universal cellular-data firewall for the Galaxy phone: other apps and services can still use mobile data according to their own settings.

Apple Intelligence
Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device, while more complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute. This describes Apple’s processing approach; it is not a guarantee that every feature or request will work without an internet connection. Check the requirements for the particular feature before relying on it while offline or trying to minimize cellular use.
For data planning, do not treat “many models run on device” as a promise that all Apple Intelligence activity avoids network use. The relevant distinction is the feature and request: local processing may handle supported work on the phone, while a more complex request may use Private Cloud Compute. The cited Apple description does not provide a per-request data figure or a universal offline guarantee.
A practical order for making changes
- Measure first. Check the phone’s app-level cellular report and identify unexpected or high-use apps. Record the reporting period so a later review is comparable.
- Enable the platform control. Turn on Low Data Mode on iPhone or Data Saver on Android when using a limited plan or metered connection.
- Restrict selectively. Turn off cellular access or background data for apps that can wait for Wi-Fi, while preserving timely connectivity for essential services.
- Adjust the AI feature itself. For a feature with a documented local-processing option, enable it if its supported functions meet your needs. Check whether the cloud-dependent functions you rely on will still be available.
- Use the phone normally, then review. After a representative period or billing cycle, compare usage and check whether any needed background function was delayed. Device statistics may cover a different period from the carrier’s billing cycle, so use the carrier’s total when assessing current-period consumption.
For a clean test, avoid changing every setting at the same time. Start with the built-in low-data control, then inspect usage and function behavior. If a particular app still accounts for unwanted traffic, consider its cellular or background-data access. If a specific AI function offers a local-only option, test that separately and confirm that the features you value remain available. This sequence helps you see which change made a difference without losing track of why an app stopped refreshing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot when cellular use remains high
- Usage rises when Wi-Fi is weak: Check Wi-Fi Assist on iPhone; Apple says it can move traffic to cellular when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor.
- A background app still connects on Android: Check whether it has been allowed as a Data Saver exception. Android permits selected apps to use background metered data despite Data Saver.
- An AI feature stops working after selecting local-only processing: The function may depend on cloud processing. Revisit the feature’s processing setting if you need that function and accept the associated connectivity requirement.
- Notifications, refresh, or downloads are delayed: Review the app-specific cellular switch or background-data exception you changed, along with Low Data Mode or Data Saver. Restore access for the functions that need timely connectivity.
- The phone total does not match the bill: Device and carrier reporting periods may differ. Apple advises contacting the carrier for the most accurate current-period cellular total.
If you are unsure which change caused an unwanted effect, reverse the last setting you changed and test the affected function again. Then reapply restrictions more selectively. For example, you may decide to keep a background exception for a service that needs timely alerts while leaving nonessential apps restricted. The goal is to reduce avoidable cellular use, not to make every app unavailable whenever the phone is off Wi-Fi.
What you can and cannot estimate
The cited Apple, Android, and Samsung guidance explains controls and processing behavior, not measured data use for common AI tasks. It does not establish a typical amount for a text prompt, voice conversation, translation session, or edited image. A defensible per-task comparison would need defined devices, apps, request types, network conditions, and measurement periods. For your own plan, use the phone and carrier usage reports to observe the effect of your settings rather than relying on a universal per-request estimate.
That limitation matters when comparing features or deciding whether a particular prompt is “small.” A text exchange, voice session, or image-editing task may involve different app behavior and processing paths, and the cited platform guidance does not measure them on a common basis. Rather than budgeting around an unsupported megabyte estimate, watch your own phone’s usage over a representative period and use the carrier’s current-period total when checking your allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does using AI on a phone always use mobile data?
No. Processing depends on the feature and request. Some functions can run on-device, while others use cloud services or may use a mix. Even when an AI function processes locally, the app or other phone services may still use cellular data for unrelated activity.

Will turning on Data Saver stop Android apps from using cellular data?
It blocks background data on a metered network and signals apps to use less data in the foreground where possible. It does not guarantee that foreground activity stops. Android also lets you allow selected apps to use background metered data as exceptions.
If I turn off cellular data for an iPhone app, can I still use it?
Apple says that app’s service uses Wi-Fi only when its cellular data access is off. It may not connect when you are away from Wi-Fi, so keep access enabled for functions that need timely connectivity.
Does on-device AI mean the feature works offline?
Not necessarily. On-device processing can avoid a cloud request for supported functions, but other functions may require cloud processing or internet access. Check the requirements and processing option for the specific feature.
How much data does an AI prompt, voice session, or edited image use?
Apple, Android, and Samsung’s cited guidance does not publish a typical per-task figure for those activities. Use your own device and carrier usage reports to observe your usage; avoid relying on a universal megabyte estimate.
Why does my iPhone still use cellular when Wi-Fi is available?
Apple says Wi-Fi Assist is on by default and can switch to cellular when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. Check Wi-Fi Assist in Settings > Cellular if cellular use rises while connected to weak Wi-Fi.
The Bottom Line
To reduce mobile data without disabling useful features, check app-level cellular use, enable Low Data Mode or Data Saver, and restrict only apps that can wait for Wi-Fi. For AI, verify the processing mode of the specific feature and use on-device-only processing when it meets your needs. Review usage again after a representative period, and keep exceptions for services that need timely connectivity.
