Start by identifying which part is making the noise. A sharp click or thud at the end of a keystroke usually comes from switch bottom-out or top-out. A rattle isolated to the space bar, Enter, or Shift usually involves a stabilizer or keycap. A hollow, echoing character points toward the case and its internal layers. On a compatible hot-swap keyboard, replacing the switches with silent tactile models is the most direct fix. If the board cannot accept replacement switches, a complete keyboard designed with silent tactile switches and internal damping is the practical alternative. “Silent” means quieter, not necessarily inaudible in every room, desk, keycap, and typing style.
Why a tactile keyboard can still be loud
Tactility and sound are separate characteristics. Tactile feedback is the change in resistance, or bump, that tells your finger a key has reached its actuation event. Sound is produced by impacts, moving parts, and the keyboard body. A switch can therefore retain a noticeable bump while using damped contact points to reduce impact noise.
GATERON describes two principal switch-noise sources: bottom-out, when the stem hits the lower housing at the end of a press, and top-out, when the stem returns and taps the upper housing. A switch marketed as silent tactile is designed to control those impacts while retaining a tactile event. The exact bump, smoothness, and perceived volume still depend on the particular switch and the typist.

Other noises are outside the switch itself. Large keys use stabilizing hardware that can rattle against the keycap or balance bar. The case can amplify impacts or transmit them into the desk. Foam, silicone, and similar layers are used in some keyboards to reduce that resonance, but a layer that helps one construction is not a guaranteed remedy for every board.

Diagnose the sound before buying anything
Record a short typing sample with your phone close to the keyboard, then listen for where the sound is concentrated. Press the same key slowly and quickly, and compare a letter key with the space bar and Enter. This simple comparison prevents a switch purchase from being used to solve a stabilizer or case problem.
Sharp impact at the end of the press or on release
A distinct tap when a key reaches the bottom, or when it springs back to the top, is consistent with the bottom-out and top-out sources identified by GATERON. Silent tactile switches address this category by cushioning or controlling those contact events while preserving a bump.
Rattle on the space bar, Enter, Shift, or another long key
If most of the distraction comes from one large key, inspect that key rather than assuming every switch is noisy. Logitech’s description of its Silent Touch approach identifies keycap geometry, damping material, and balance-bar design as separate contributors. A switch swap may make the central press quieter while leaving the bar or cap rattling.

A quick diagnosis checklist
- Press a short letter key slowly. Note whether the noise occurs at the bottom, on return, or both.
- Press the same key without striking it hard. If volume changes dramatically with force, bottom-out technique and damping are important factors.
- Compare the space bar, Enter, and Shift with a letter key. A localized rattle suggests stabilization or keycap contact.
- Listen from a short distance and from the desk surface. A boomy sound that travels through the desk suggests case or transmission resonance.
- Check whether the keyboard has hot-swap sockets before considering a switch replacement.
Choose the right solution
| Noise pattern | Most relevant option | What it can and cannot solve |
|---|---|---|
| Impact on ordinary keys | Silent tactile replacement switches on a compatible hot-swap board | Targets switch bottom-out and top-out while retaining a tactile event; does not automatically remove stabilizer or case noise. |
| Board is not replaceable, or you do not want to open it | Complete keyboard with factory-installed silent tactile switches | Provides a matched switch and sound-control design; layout and regional availability must be checked. |
| Space bar, Enter, or Shift rattles | Keyboard-specific stabilizer and keycap service | Addresses large-key hardware; a switch change alone may leave the main rattle. |
| Hollow or desk-transmitted sound | Keyboard-specific internal damping or a board designed with damping layers | Can reduce resonance; material, fit, and construction determine the result. |
Path 1: replace switches with silent tactile models
This is the most direct route when the keyboard is a compatible hot-swap mechanical model. A hot-swap socket lets you remove a switch without desoldering, but sockets and mounting styles differ. Confirm the keyboard’s documentation before ordering.
Check compatibility first
- Replaceable switches: The board must actually have hot-swap sockets. A soldered keyboard requires a different procedure and may not be a sensible first modification.
- Mounting and pin count: GATERON’s KS-6 Aliaz is a five-pin, PCB-mount, MX-style switch. The keyboard must accept that mounting arrangement or provide a documented way to support it.
- Socket and plate constraints: An MX-style stem by itself does not establish complete compatibility. Check the socket, plate opening, PCB support, and the manufacturer’s stated switch support.
- Layout: A replacement switch goes under a key, but large-key stabilization hardware remains keyboard-specific. Confirm that the board’s stabilizers and keycaps are compatible with the switch installation.
What the KS-6 Aliaz specifications mean
| Specification | GATERON KS-6 Aliaz value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Silent tactile | Designed to reduce contact noise while retaining a tactile event; it is not a promise of silence in every setup. |
| Mount | Five-pin PCB mount, MX-style | Use only where the keyboard supports the socket and mounting arrangement. |
| Pre-travel | 2.0 ± 0.6 mm | Manufacturer specification for the distance before actuation; it is not a guarantee of perceived feel. |
| Maximum total travel | 4.0 mm | Manufacturer’s maximum travel figure. |
| Operating-force options | 60, 70, 80, or 100 gf, each ±15 gf | Choose according to the desired resistance. Published force does not replace trying a switch, because bump shape and spring feel also matter. |
Installation sequence for a hot-swap board
- Confirm the board’s support. Identify the keyboard model, socket type, pin support, and whether its service instructions permit switch removal. Do not force a five-pin switch into a socket that cannot accept its mounting legs.
- Disconnect the keyboard. Unplug the USB cable or switch off its connection before removing keycaps or switches.
- Remove one keycap and inspect the switch. Look for the switch-retaining tabs and the position of the pins. Photograph the original orientation so the replacement is aligned correctly.
- Use a switch puller made for the board’s switch type. Grip the switch tabs rather than levering against the PCB. If it does not release with reasonable pressure, stop and consult the keyboard’s instructions.
- Install a single test switch. Align the pins and retaining legs, press straight down, and reconnect the keyboard only after the switch is seated. Test the key in a keyboard tester or text editor.
- Check feel and sound. Verify that the key actuates, returns fully, and does not feel scratchy or crooked. Compare it with an untouched key before replacing the rest.
- Continue in small batches. Replacing a few switches at a time makes it easier to find a bent pin, incompatible socket, or unexpected feel before the entire board is changed.
The source material establishes that a switch puller can help with compatible hot-swap installation, but it does not establish one universal tool or procedure for every keyboard. Follow the keyboard manufacturer’s service guidance whenever it differs from this general sequence.
Path 2: buy a complete keyboard designed for quiet tactile use
A factory-built board is appropriate when the existing keyboard is soldered, its sockets are incompatible, or you prefer not to disassemble it. Compare the installed switch, layout, stabilizer treatment, and internal construction rather than relying on the word “silent” alone.

Questions to ask before ordering a complete board
- Is the layout correct for your region and work habits?
- Are the installed switches tactile, and is their force or bump described clearly enough for your preference?
- Does the design include damping for the case, plate, and large keys, or only a silent switch?
- Are stabilizers lubricated or cushioned according to the manufacturer’s specification?
- Can the keyboard be returned if the tactile force or sound does not suit you?
- Is the quoted noise figure attributed to the manufacturer and accompanied by a test method? If not, do not use it as a cross-brand measurement.
Handle large-key and case noise separately
Stabilizer and keycap noise
For a noisy space bar or Enter key, inspect the keycap and stabilizer rather than replacing every switch. Logitech identifies the geometry of the cap, damping material, and balance-bar contact as contributors. be quiet! describes lubricated stabilizers and cushioning where stabilizers meet the PCB in its Dark Mount design. Those examples show why a keyboard can need large-key treatment in addition to quiet switches.
Because stabilizer designs differ, use the keyboard maker’s service instructions and parts intended for that construction. The available evidence does not establish one universal lubricant, foam strip, or O-ring procedure that preserves the feel of every switch. Do not assume a generic insert will fit, remain secure, or leave travel unchanged.
Case resonance and transmission
If the whole board sounds hollow, the relevant intervention is construction-level damping. Some products use foam, silicone, muffler pads, or multiple layers to limit sound transmission. On an existing board, opening the case can void a warranty, damage clips, or change the key feel if material interferes with the plate or PCB. Only use a modification when the keyboard manufacturer documents the service and the material is made for that model.
Compare tactile feel, not just advertised quietness
| Comparison point | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bump shape and prominence | A “tactile” label does not describe whether the bump is early, rounded, sharp, or subtle. | Read the switch description and, where possible, try a sample. |
| Operating force | Heavier springs can reduce accidental presses but may tire some typists; lighter springs may feel faster but easier to bottom out. | Use the manufacturer’s force range as a reference, not a promise of personal comfort. |
| Pre-travel and total travel | Travel affects when the key actuates and how much movement remains after actuation. | Compare terms with the same definitions; GATERON lists 2.0 ± 0.6 mm pre-travel and 4.0 mm maximum total travel for KS-6 Aliaz. |
| Noise source addressed | A quiet switch cannot by itself fix a rattling stabilizer or resonant case. | Match the intervention to the diagnosis. |
| Evidence quality | Different manufacturers may measure sound under different conditions. | Keep each decibel claim attributed to its manufacturer and avoid cross-brand rankings without a common protocol. |
Force values are expressed in gram-force (gf), but the number is only one part of feel. Spring curve, tactile-leg shape, lubrication, keycap weight, and typing technique influence the resistance your fingers perceive. A 60 gf option is not automatically “soft,” and a 100 gf option is not automatically better for avoiding bottom-out noise.

Reduce sound without giving up the tactile event
After installing or selecting a board, tune your expectations around the specific noise source. Silent tactile switches can reduce the impact generated inside a switch, but they do not remove the sound of fingers striking keycaps, a keycap hitting a stabilizer, or a case transmitting vibration to a desk. Pressing with less force and avoiding a hard bottom-out can also change the perceived volume, although that is a typing adjustment rather than a hardware specification.
Test a representative group of keys: a normal letter, a key used repeatedly in your work, the space bar, Enter, and Shift. Listen both while seated and from the location of another person in the room. A board that sounds quiet directly beside you can still transmit low-frequency vibration through a hard desk, while a board that sounds louder close up may be less distracting at a distance.
Troubleshooting after a switch change
A key does not actuate
Disconnect the keyboard, remove the switch, and inspect the pins for bending. Recheck orientation and socket compatibility. Do not continue pressing a switch that is misaligned, because force can damage the socket or pin.
The key actuates but feels crooked or scratchy
Remove and reseat that switch, checking that all mounting legs and pins are straight. If the board’s plate or socket does not support the switch’s mounting style, stop and confirm compatibility rather than trimming or forcing parts without manufacturer guidance.

The ordinary keys are quieter but the space bar is still distracting
This pattern points toward stabilizer, balance-bar, or keycap contact. Follow the keyboard-specific service instructions for that assembly; replacing more switches will not necessarily address it.
The board is quieter but still sounds hollow
The remaining sound may be case resonance or desk transmission. Check whether the keyboard was designed with internal foam, silicone, or a muffler pad. For an existing board, use only documented, model-specific service procedures.
The result is quiet but the feel is wrong
Compare the new switch’s bump and operating-force option with your original preference. Silent construction does not guarantee an unchanged tactile profile. A sample set or a returnable purchase is safer than committing to a full board when the feel is unknown.
What “silent” can and cannot promise
- No independent, standardized comparison in the cited material establishes that one named switch or keyboard is the quietest.
- MSI’s “below 35 dB” statement is a manufacturer figure for the STRIKE 600 V2’s Kailh Midnight Pro Silent Tactile switches, not a universal result for every user.
- There is no evidence here for a guaranteed percentage reduction in sound on an arbitrary keyboard.
- Product layouts, regional availability, specifications, and support can change, so verify the current listing and compatibility before purchase.
- Preserving tactility means preserving a tactile event, not preserving the exact bump, force, or travel of the original switch.
The dependable decision rule is simple: diagnose first, match the fix to the source, verify the socket and mounting details, and evaluate tactile feel separately from noise claims. For a compatible hot-swap board, a correctly matched silent tactile switch is usually the most targeted change. For a non-replaceable board or a no-tools purchase, choose a complete keyboard whose switch, stabilizer treatment, and damping construction are all documented.
