If video calls lag on satellite internet, first find out whether the problem is your Wi-Fi or household traffic, or the satellite connection itself. Test a call over Ethernet, pause competing uploads and downloads, and check your calling app’s quality indicators while the problem is happening. A strong download-speed result alone cannot show whether packets are arriving steadily enough for a real-time conversation.
Why a fast internet speed test can still produce a poor call
Download speed measures how quickly data can arrive in a test; a video call also depends on data arriving consistently in both directions. Three network conditions can disrupt that timing:
- Latency is the time data takes to make a round trip. Higher delay can make conversation feel less responsive.
- Jitter is variation in packet arrival timing. Inconsistent timing can make audio or video uneven.
- Packet loss means some data packets do not arrive. Missing packets can cause gaps or degraded call quality.
These are distinct from download throughput. Zoom defines the terms in its network guidance; the practical point is to assess call quality during a call rather than treating one speed-test result as a diagnosis.

How to troubleshoot a lagging satellite video call
1. Check the call while the problem is happening
Note whether the disruption affects audio, video, or both, and open the calling app’s network-quality information if available. In Zoom, the meeting dashboard can show quality grades and alerts and evaluates factors including latency, jitter, and packet loss. Zoom’s Mean Opinion Score (MOS) runs from 1.0 to 5.0; its guidance labels 4.0–5.0 Good and 1.0–2.0 Bad. Those labels describe Zoom’s interpretation, not a universal score for every calling platform. Use the same app and similar call conditions when comparing tests. A speed test can show available throughput at one moment, but it does not establish that packet timing will remain stable throughout a call.
2. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
When practical, connect the computer directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat a comparable call. This removes Wi-Fi from the path between the computer and router as a variable. If the call improves, address the local wireless connection: move closer to the router, improve its placement or coverage, or reduce sources of interference. Zoom’s network guidance discusses wired and wireless network practices for real-time calls.

Ethernet is a diagnostic test, not a fix for delay, outages, or packet loss on the satellite link. If a wired call is no better, continue testing other causes before buying equipment.

3. Pause competing household traffic
For a controlled test, pause cloud backups and large uploads or downloads on other devices, then try another call. Upload activity is worth checking alongside downloads because a busy connection can make real-time traffic compete with other household data.

If calls improve when other traffic stops, the local network may be congested. A router with configurable Quality of Service (QoS) can prioritize real-time traffic within your home network when capacity is contested. That prioritization does not extend reliably across the public internet: Zoom cautions that network providers typically do not preserve or act on DSCP markings end to end. QoS can manage local contention, but it cannot guarantee priority once traffic leaves your network. Zoom’s QoS guidance is principally about Zoom Phone and organizational network administration, so do not treat its voice-specific details as requirements for every video-call app.
4. Check satellite service conditions
Check your provider’s service diagnostics, outage information, and—where available—obstruction information for the time the call degraded. If Ethernet and reduced household traffic make no difference, and the calling app still reports packet loss or unstable delay, the cause may be outside your home network. Keep the call timestamps and diagnostic information when contacting the provider; a router setting cannot repair a problem on the satellite link.

What latency can you expect from satellite internet?
Latency varies by satellite system, location, and network conditions. Starlink publishes typical land latency of 25–60 ms and says some remote locations experience 100+ ms. These are Starlink’s published figures, not a guarantee for an individual location or a representative range for all satellite providers. Starlink also says actual speeds may be lower than expected during high usage and does not guarantee uninterrupted service. See its published service specifications.

Starlink reported on March 7, 2024, that U.S. median latency during peak usage had fallen by more than 30%, from 48.5 ms to 33 ms, and that worst-case peak-hour latency (p99) had fallen by over 60%, from more than 150 ms to under 65 ms. Zoom’s support article says, “However, round-trip delays should not exceed 300ms to ensure optimal performance.” That statement appears in guidance about Zoom Phone QoS; it should not be read as a universal threshold for every video-calling service. Consult your own platform’s guidance and call-quality indicators for its applicable recommendations.
When a router change or service change is worth considering
Match the response to what the tests show:
- Ethernet helps: focus on Wi-Fi placement, coverage, or interference before blaming the satellite link.
- Pausing other traffic helps: reduce simultaneous transfers; consider router QoS only if local congestion is the recurring cause.
- Neither helps, and diagnostics show loss or unstable delay: share timestamps and evidence with the provider and ask it to check service conditions.
Do not choose a satellite plan by download speed alone. When comparing available services, consider the service type and its published latency range, your location and peak-hour expectations, upload capacity, interruption history at the installation, and the provider’s diagnostic options. Performance depends on local conditions, and published figures do not promise the experience at a particular address.
