Start with GeForce NOW’s own network test, then use the Session Report to determine whether the problem is your route to NVIDIA, your device, input hardware, or the game itself. Ethernet (or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi), fewer competing transfers, the nearest automatic server, and a few platform-specific changes solve many cases without buying new hardware.
Identify what “lag” actually looks like
Cloud gaming has several failure modes that can look similar on screen. Classifying the symptom prevents you from changing the wrong setting.
Delayed controls
If a character reacts noticeably after you move a controller or mouse, suspect round-trip latency, an unstable route, or input processing. A network can have ample download bandwidth and still feel slow when ping is high or variable. Mouse-only stutter can also come from an excessively high polling rate.

Jerky, blurry or frozen video
Uneven pictures, sudden resolution drops, brief freezes and repeated frames usually point to packet loss, jitter, Wi‑Fi interference, congestion or a device that cannot decode the stream consistently.

Crackling or missing audio
Audio cracking and cutoffs often accompany packet delivery problems, but local CPU, wireless and Bluetooth conditions can contribute. Check whether the picture stutters at the same moment.
An uneven game despite a smooth stream
If the stream itself is stable but the game appears to hitch, the game-performance or local-device component may be the limiting factor. The Session Report is more reliable than guessing from appearance alone.
Use NVIDIA’s network test before changing equipment
NVIDIA’s test measures the path to a GeForce NOW data center rather than a generic internet destination. NVIDIA states, “Our network test is different from Speedtest or other internet speed test websites.” A result from a general speed-test site can therefore look excellent while the route used for your gaming session has loss, jitter or excessive delay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun the test on a PC or Mac
- Open the GeForce NOW app menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Leave Server Location set to Auto while diagnosing. This lets the service select the closest or best available data center.
- Select TEST NETWORK.
Run it on Android or SHIELD
Open GeForce NOW settings and choose Test network. The labels can vary slightly by device software version, but the test is built into the GeForce NOW settings rather than a separate browser page.
iPhone and iPad limitation
As of NVIDIA’s network-testing article updated October 5, 2026, the iOS and iPadOS apps do not include an in-app network tester. Run the test from a PC, Mac or Android device connected to the same home network. This will not reproduce every device-specific issue, but it gives you route measurements that a generic speed test cannot provide. See NVIDIA’s network-testing instructions.

Understand the four measurements
- Bandwidth: available throughput for delivering the encoded stream.
- Packet loss: data that fails to arrive. NVIDIA says a good network has no packet loss; even intermittent loss can cause visible skips or audio gaps.
- Jitter: variation in packet arrival timing. NVIDIA describes a good network as having low jitter.
- Ping: round-trip delay between your device and the selected data center.
NVIDIA requires less than 80 ms of network latency to a GeForce NOW data center. That threshold is a service requirement, not a promise that every connection below it will feel identical.
Fix the connection in the least expensive order
1. Test Ethernet
Connect the gaming device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the GeForce NOW test. NVIDIA recommends a hardwired connection because it removes radio interference, channel contention and many distance-related Wi‑Fi fluctuations. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical shopping category for this job; NVIDIA does not state that Cat 6 is uniquely required.

2. If wireless is necessary, use 5 GHz
Choose the router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz when your device supports it. Stay close enough to the access point for a strong signal, and test from the room where you actually play. Walls, neighboring networks and household appliances can make a wireless result vary from one location to another.
3. Find a cleaner channel
When several nearby networks overlap, use a Wi‑Fi analyzer to identify less congested channels, then change the channel in the router’s wireless settings. Re-run the GeForce NOW test after each change so you can tell whether packet loss or jitter improved.
4. Stop competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, uploads, livestreams and high-resolution video on other devices while testing. Upload saturation is especially easy to miss: your download speed may remain high while queued outbound traffic increases delay for game input and acknowledgements.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
5. Update and reboot the router
Install the router manufacturer’s current firmware when one is available. Reboot the router if it has been running continuously or has recently changed behavior, then test again. Record results before and after so you do not mistake a temporary improvement for a permanent fix.
Check route selection, VPNs and time-of-day patterns
Keep Server Location on Auto while troubleshooting
Manual server selection can send a session to a data center that is farther away or temporarily less suitable. Return to Auto until you have stable measurements. If changing locations is necessary for a specific account or feature, compare the network-test results rather than choosing by name alone.
Temporarily disable a VPN
Test once with the VPN disconnected. NVIDIA warns that VPNs can add latency, cause stutter or route a session to the wrong data center. If the problem disappears, compare the VPN’s nearby exit locations or leave it off for GeForce NOW; do not assume the VPN is the only possible cause without a before-and-after test.
Compare peak and off-peak hours
Run the same network test and, if possible, a short session at busy evening hours and at a quieter time. NVIDIA notes that an ISP or neighborhood network can become congested during peak streaming periods. A time-dependent pattern is evidence of changing congestion, not proof that your ISP is responsible in every case.
Test router QoS when relevant
Quality-of-service rules can help some traffic and hurt other traffic. NVIDIA reports that QoS on some routers can negatively affect GeForce NOW. If QoS is enabled, document its current settings, test with it temporarily off, and restore the original configuration if there is no improvement. This is a targeted experiment, not a recommendation to disable QoS on every router.

Read the Game Session Diagnostic Tool
On Windows PC, macOS and supported browser sessions, open Help > Session report to view the latest report. NVIDIA presents component scores on a 0–100 scale, where higher is better. The scale is a diagnostic display, not a population statistic or a guarantee of smooth play.
What the components tell you
- Your Device: local decoding, rendering or resource pressure.
- Upload: the quality of data sent from your device.
- Download: the stream’s incoming throughput.
- Packets delivery: whether packets arrive reliably and on time; congestion, queueing, Wi‑Fi interference and possible ISP traffic management can affect it.
- Game: performance reported by the remote game session itself.
Follow the lowest component first. If Your Device is lowest, lower the stream resolution or frame rate, close other applications and restart the device. If Packets delivery is lowest, return to Ethernet or 5 GHz testing, competing-traffic checks and time-of-day comparisons. A low game score with healthy network components points away from buying a router or cable.
Apply device and input-specific fixes
Mouse stutter: try a 125 Hz polling rate
When the video is smooth but mouse movement is uneven, lower the current mouse’s polling rate to 125 Hz and test again. NVIDIA explicitly recommends this as an input-specific experiment. It does not repair packet loss, high ping or general video stutter. Change only the polling setting first; buying a new mouse is unnecessary unless the existing one cannot select a lower rate.
Close resource-heavy applications
Quit browsers with many tabs, screen recorders, overlays, synchronization tools and other applications that consume CPU, memory, GPU time or upload bandwidth. Reopen GeForce NOW after closing them and compare the Session Report. A restart is useful when a process or driver has remained in a degraded state.
SHIELD connected to a television: enable Game Mode
Televisions can add their own image-processing delay even when GeForce NOW’s network is healthy. On SHIELD, enable the television’s Game Mode and test controller response again. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use the TV’s instructions. Game Mode may change picture processing and image quality; the trade-off is lower display latency.

Mac-specific background checks
NVIDIA’s current lag guidance includes Mac-specific checks involving AWDL, AirDrop-related activity and location-services behavior. If a Mac session is unstable while other devices on the same network are fine, review those checks in NVIDIA’s lag and streaming-quality guidance, apply one change at a time, and retest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match stream settings to available bandwidth
NVIDIA publishes platform-specific requirements rather than one universal household target. The following figures are current Windows PC examples from the GeForce NOW system requirements page, accessed in 2026.
| Windows PC stream target | NVIDIA bandwidth figure |
|---|---|
| 720p at up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
| QHD/FHD at 240 or 360 FPS | 55 Mbps |
| 5K at 120 FPS | 65 Mbps |
These are Windows PC requirements examples, not controlled measurements of what a particular home needs, and they should not be presented as universal values for phones, televisions, SHIELD or every membership tier. If the Session Report identifies the device or download path as weak, temporarily select a lower resolution or frame rate and see whether stability returns. Raise the setting only after the lower target remains consistent.
Use symptom-and-evidence troubleshooting instead of a universal “lag fix”
| Observed symptom | Evidence to collect | First targeted action |
|---|---|---|
| Controls feel delayed on every game | Ping and latency in the GeForce NOW test | Try Ethernet, disable VPN for a test, and keep Server Location on Auto |
| Video freezes or jumps | Packet loss, jitter and Packets delivery score | Move to 5 GHz or Ethernet and stop competing transfers |
| Audio cracks with picture skips | Packet loss/jitter plus Session Report | Correct the wireless or congestion condition before changing game settings |
| Only mouse movement stutters | Smooth video and mouse-specific behavior | Test a 125 Hz polling rate |
| Stream is smooth but game hitches | Game and Your Device scores | Close applications, restart, or lower stream settings if the device score is lowest |
| Problem appears only at busy hours | Repeated tests at peak and off-peak times | Document the pattern and discuss route congestion with your provider if other evidence supports it |
When new hardware is justified
Change existing connections and settings before purchasing anything. A cable is useful when an Ethernet test is practical and improves loss or jitter. A replacement router is worth considering only when coverage, radio capacity or firmware limitations remain the diagnosed bottleneck after placement and channel tests. NVIDIA maintains a recommended routers and controllers list, but the existence of a model on that list does not make replacement necessary for every stuttering session.
If the only reproducible fault is mouse-input stutter and the current mouse cannot select 125 Hz, a USB mouse with an adjustable polling rate is a relevant category. It is not a solution for network delay. Likewise, increasing an internet plan’s advertised speed will not by itself remove packet loss, jitter, poor Wi‑Fi coverage or a bad route to the data center.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the problem remains after the targeted tests, collect information before contacting support:
- Device and platform: Windows PC, macOS, browser, Android, SHIELD or iOS/iPadOS.
- Date and exact times when the problem occurred, including whether it was peak or off-peak.
- GeForce NOW network-test results for bandwidth, packet loss, jitter and ping.
- Server Location setting and whether a VPN was enabled.
- Ethernet versus 5 GHz Wi‑Fi results, router model and relevant QoS state.
- Session Report scores and the game in which the symptom appeared.
- Whether the issue affected input, video, audio or all three.
NVIDIA directs users with persistent stream problems to Customer Care and provides in-app issue reporting. Include the evidence above rather than only saying that the service “lags.” See the GeForce NOW FAQ for current support routes and service qualifications.
