For online gaming, a stable connection with low latency matters more than a high headline download speed. First compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, reduce competing traffic, and check the router’s signal and settings. Upgrade hardware only when you have identified a limitation it can address: a new router cannot guarantee lower ping if the bottleneck is your ISP, route to the game server, or the server itself.

What affects gaming lag on Wi-Fi?

Latency is the time it takes data to travel to a destination and back; games commonly show it as ping in milliseconds. High or inconsistent latency can make actions feel delayed. Packet loss—data that fails to arrive—can cause problems even when a speed test reports a fast connection. Download speed matters more for downloading games and updates, while bandwidth becomes important when several people or devices share the connection.

The Wi-Fi link is only one part of the path. Your device, router, modem, internet service provider (ISP), competing network traffic, and the distance to the game server can all affect the experience. A geographically closer server may reduce the distance data must travel, when the game lets you choose one. Intel explains these factors in its guide to wired and wireless gaming.

How to troubleshoot lag before buying anything

  1. Check whether the problem is limited to one game or server. If the game offers server selection, try a geographically closer option and see whether the problem changes.
  2. Compare with Ethernet. Connect the same PC or console to the router with an Ethernet cable and test the same game and server. If play improves, the Wi-Fi link may be contributing. If it does not, investigate other parts of the connection rather than assuming a router upgrade will solve it.
  3. Reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on your network while testing. Shared bandwidth can affect play, particularly when multiple devices are active.
  4. Improve the Wi-Fi path. Test closer to the router, check whether walls or other obstructions stand between it and your device, and look for interference or a weak signal. A closer, clearer connection may help; results depend on the home and equipment.
  5. Review router software and traffic controls. Check whether the router has a firmware update and whether it offers quality of service (QoS) or traffic-priority settings. Names and behavior vary by router, and prioritization cannot fix a problem outside the home network.
  6. Check for packet loss. If the game or your network tools report packet loss, use Intel’s packet-loss troubleshooting guidance. Ethernet, reduced network activity, and improved signal are useful checks, but the cause may still lie beyond Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet: which should you use?

Factor Ethernet Wi-Fi
Connection path A cable connects the device to the router, bypassing the wireless link. Data travels over a radio link between the device and router.
Stability A useful comparison when diagnosing wireless signal or interference problems. Can be affected by distance, obstructions, interference, and signal strength.
Convenience Requires a cable run and a suitable port on the device and router. Allows play without running a cable to the device.
What it can fix May help when the Wi-Fi link is the bottleneck; it will not by itself fix an ISP or game-server issue. Can work well when the signal and network conditions are suitable; performance depends on the whole connection.

For a stationary gaming PC or console, test Ethernet if the router is reachable. Use the same game, server, and general network conditions for a fair comparison. A cable is a practical way to remove Wi-Fi from the connection path; the evidence does not establish that paying extra for a more expensive cable alone improves game latency.

When does a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 upgrade make sense?

Consider a newer router only after checking what your current setup supports and identifying a relevant limitation, such as wireless capability or coverage. A Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router can provide access to the 6 GHz band only when the client device also supports it and applicable software, system, and regional requirements are met. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 gaming overview describes potential benefits but makes them conditional on compatible equipment, environment, and configuration; some features require a compatible Intel Wi-Fi 7 PC solution and OEM enablement.

Intel’s 6 GHz support guidance, last reviewed on 2025-02-06, lists requirements including a compatible router and client, Windows 11, current Intel wireless drivers, and regional and system-manufacturer support. Requirements can change, so check the current guidance and your device documentation before buying or configuring equipment. A newer Wi-Fi generation is not a guarantee of lower ping: the benefit depends on client support, signal conditions, traffic, ISP routing, and the game server.

What equipment should you consider?

  • Ethernet cable: A sensible option for a stationary device or for comparing wired and wireless performance. Check that the device and router have compatible network ports.
  • Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router: Consider one only if its supported bands or features address a limitation in your setup and your gaming device can use them. Confirm regional availability and device requirements.
  • PC Wi-Fi adapter: For a desktop without suitable built-in wireless, an adapter may be an option if the PC has a compatible slot. Confirm operating-system, driver, system, and router support before choosing one.

For any upgrade, match the purchase to the bottleneck you observed. If Ethernet does not improve the game and the Wi-Fi signal is already strong, changing wireless hardware may not address the cause.
