If a mechanical keyboard is disturbing a nearby listener, stream, recording, or call, first identify whether the problem is airborne key sound or vibration traveling through the desk. Then match the remedy to the mechanism: an O-ring can soften bottom-out impact, a compatible silent switch can reduce downstroke and return contact noise, internal foam can treat a hollow or ringing case, and a stable isolation layer can reduce desk-coupled vibration. None of these changes makes every mechanical keyboard silent, and the right fix depends on the board, switches, keycaps, and warranty.
What “mechanical-key speaker” means in practice
“Mechanical-key speaker” is not a distinct keyboard or audio-device category. In this context, it means a mechanical keyboard being used close enough to a person, speaker, headset microphone, or recording microphone that its sound or vibration is distracting. Two paths must be separated:
- Airborne sound: the click of a switch, the keycap striking at the end of a press, the return stroke, stabilizer rattle, or resonance from the keyboard case travels through the air.
- Structure-borne vibration: impact travels through the keyboard feet, desk mat, desk surface, stand, or furniture and can be heard or felt elsewhere.
A desk mat may help with the second path, but it does not block sound radiated directly through the air. Likewise, a switch change may quiet the key itself while leaving a loose keyboard foot or resonant desk untouched.

Switch click
Clicky switches contain a mechanism that creates an intentional, sharp click. Logitech’s switch overview distinguishes linear switches, which have no tactile bump or audio click; tactile switches, which have a bump; and clicky switches, which have both a bump and an audible click. An O-ring under a keycap cannot remove the click mechanism itself. If the click is the dominant sound, a non-clicky silent switch is the more direct route, subject to compatibility.
Bottom-out impact
Bottom-out occurs when the stem reaches the end of its downward travel and contacts the lower housing. The result is often a hard clack or thump, especially when the typist presses forcefully. A keycap can also land against the keyboard frame. Sharkoon describes this keycap-stem impact as a familiar source of mechanical-key noise, separate from the click produced by some tactile switches.
Return-stroke or top-out sound
When a key returns, the stem contacts the upper housing. Gateron uses top-out for this return event and bottom-out for the downward event. A board that sounds loud when keys are released, not just pressed, needs damping at both contact points; a bottom-out-only solution may leave much of the complaint unchanged.

Long keys such as Space, Enter, Shift, and Backspace can rattle even when ordinary keys are reasonably quiet. Compare a single-letter key with the Space bar at the same force. If only the long keys buzz or tick, focus on the stabilizers and keycap fit rather than covering the entire keyboard with foam.
Case hollowness or metallic ping
A hollow board has reverberation in empty case space. A high-pitched ring, often called ping, may come from a metal case or plate and can also be related to switch springs. Tom’s Hardware’s mechanical-keyboard tuning guide treats hollowness and ping as resonance problems, not simply loud switches. Listen for a lingering tone after the key is released; that decay points toward the case or plate.

Vibration through the desk
Place one hand on the desk while typing. If you feel each impact, check whether all keyboard feet sit flat and whether moving the board changes the transmitted thump. Temporarily place the keyboard on a stable, compliant mat or isolation layer and repeat the same test. This is a practical diagnosis, not a guaranteed acoustic cure: the reviewed sources do not provide a universal decibel or percentage reduction for mats.
Use the lowest-risk fixes first
1. Stabilize and reposition the keyboard
- Clean the desk area and make sure each keyboard foot contacts the surface evenly.
- Move the board away from a resonant edge, thin shelf, or hollow stand and retest from the listener’s position.
- Try a firm desk mat or vibration-damping layer under the keyboard. Compare identical typing before and after, paying attention to felt desk movement as well as airborne sound.
- Keep the keyboard from touching a monitor stand, wall, microphone arm, or other object that can act as a vibration path.
This intervention is reversible and does not require opening the keyboard. It is most useful when the dominant complaint is a desk thump rather than a sharp switch click.
2. Fit compatible O-rings for bottom-out noise
An O-ring sits on the keycap stem. As the keycap reaches the end of its downward travel, the soft ring cushions the landing. WASD explains that its dampeners affect approximately the last 0.2–0.4 mm of travel and very slightly reduce maximum travel. That measurement applies to the dampeners described by WASD, not to every ring sold for every keycap.
- Confirm that the keycap has a stem and that the ring will not interfere with the switch housing or an unusual low-profile arrangement.
- Remove one keycap with a keycap puller and inspect the stem before installing a full set.
- Seat one ring evenly around the stem, reinstall the keycap, and test bottom-out feel and sound.
- If the change is acceptable, repeat across the relevant keys. Keep a few unmodified keys as a before-and-after reference.
O-rings change the feel by shortening available travel slightly and softening the final impact. They do not eliminate a click mechanism, case resonance, stabilizer rattle, or every return-stroke sound. If the ring makes the key feel mushy or prevents reliable actuation, remove it rather than stacking thicker rings.
Specifications vary by product. Sharkoon’s Noise Silencer kit is specified as 2 mm thick, 60 Shore A, with an 8 mm outer diameter and 4 mm inner diameter; the kit includes a keycap puller and rings for up to 120 keys. Those figures describe that kit only, not a universal O-ring standard.

When silent switches are the right answer
If the switch itself is producing the noise, Logitech recommends considering silent switches. Silent designs add damping at the top and bottom contact points, reducing the sharp impact on both the downstroke and return while preserving either a linear or tactile character. They reduce sound; they do not create a noiseless keyboard, because keycaps, stabilizers, springs, and the case can still contribute.

Check compatibility before ordering switches
- Hot-swap or soldered PCB: a hot-swap board may accept switch replacement without soldering. A soldered board requires desoldering and soldering equipment and skill.
- Pin count: verify whether the PCB accepts three-pin or five-pin switches. Extra plastic locating pins on a five-pin switch may need a compatible PCB or careful trimming, depending on the board.
- Mounting and profile: confirm MX-style dimensions, plate clearance, LED position, and whether the keyboard uses a low-profile or proprietary format.
- Keycap and stabilizer fit: the new switch must support the existing keycaps and retain the correct travel for stabilized keys.
- Warranty: opening the board or soldering can affect coverage. Read the manufacturer’s warranty before disassembly.
Gateron’s KS-6 Aliaz Silent Tactile is one specific example described as a five-pin PCB-mount switch compatible with five-pin MX mechanical keyboards. That specification cannot be generalized to all silent switches or all keyboards. Treat it as a compatibility example and verify the exact PCB and plate in your board.
Choose silent linear or silent tactile behavior
A silent linear switch has a smooth press without a tactile bump. A silent tactile switch retains a bump while damping the contact events. Your choice is therefore both an acoustic and a typing decision: replacing a clicky switch with a silent tactile switch can retain feedback, while replacing it with a silent linear switch changes the force profile as well as the sound.
Use case or plate foam only for resonance
Foam is appropriate when the keyboard sounds hollow or rings after a key is released. Case foam fills or absorbs some empty internal volume; plate foam sits between the switch plate and PCB or in another designed interface to damp keystroke energy. Tom’s Hardware notes that foam material and mounting choices affect both sound and feel.
- Look up the keyboard’s construction and warranty terms before opening it.
- Unplug the keyboard and photograph cable routing, screws, daughterboard connections, and foam placement before removing anything.
- Check that the chosen foam will not press against hot-swap sockets, battery cells, LEDs, stabilizers, or the PCB’s underside.
- Install only enough material to sit flat without bowing the PCB or preventing the case from closing.
- Reassemble and test for new switch interference, altered key feel, and trapped cable pressure.
Disassembly difficulty varies widely. Opening a prebuilt keyboard will likely void its warranty, so foam is not a first-line remedy for a clicky switch or a loose foot. It is a targeted modification for internal resonance after simpler causes have been ruled out.

Match the intervention to the symptom
| Intervention | Primary target | Typing or travel effect | Installation and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable placement and isolation layer | Desk-coupled vibration and movement | Usually no switch-travel change | Reversible; no opening or soldering |
| Compatible O-rings | Bottom-out impact | Slightly shorter travel; softer end stop | Keycap removal; reversible; fit must be checked |
| Silent switches | Top-out and bottom-out contact noise, plus clicky-switch replacement | Changes switch feel, force, and possibly travel | Hot-swap installation or soldering; compatibility and warranty checks required |
| Case or plate foam | Hollow resonance and ringing | Can alter sound and feel depending on material and mounting | Requires disassembly; prebuilt warranty may be affected |
Use the table as a decision filter rather than combining every modification at once. Changing one variable at a time tells you which mechanism was responsible and avoids making the board difficult to service.
A staged troubleshooting procedure
- Establish a baseline: record ordinary letters, the Space bar, a clicky key if present, and several releases from the listener or microphone position.
- Separate air from structure: move the keyboard a short distance, steady the case with one hand, and test with and without a stable mat. A large change after stabilization suggests desk coupling; a persistent sharp sound suggests the switch or keycap.
- Test one keycap: fit one compatible O-ring and compare its bottom-out and return sound with an untouched key.
- Inspect special keys: if only long keys rattle, address their stabilizers or keycap seating rather than modifying every switch.
- Decide whether the switch must change: a built-in click or loud return stroke that survives the O-ring test points toward a silent switch, provided the PCB and plate support it.
- Open the case last: investigate foam only when the remaining sound is a hollow decay or metallic ring and the warranty and construction make disassembly acceptable.
- Retest in the real setup: microphone gain, desk placement, room reflections, and listener distance affect what is heard. Keep the same setup for a meaningful comparison.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Expecting O-rings to silence a clicky switch
The ring cushions the landing; it does not remove the click mechanism. Use a non-clicky silent switch when the click itself is the dominant sound.
Assuming a desk mat blocks airborne noise
Isolation can reduce vibration entering the desk, but a microphone can still receive direct key sound. Combine placement or isolation with keycap, switch, or resonance treatment according to the diagnosis.
Installing switches without checking the PCB
Pin count, hot-swap sockets, plate openings, switch profile, and soldering requirements differ. Test one switch or consult the keyboard’s exact documentation before buying a full set.

Making several changes simultaneously
Changing switches, adding rings, moving the board, and inserting foam at the same time prevents reliable diagnosis. Make one reversible change, record the result, and proceed only if the remaining symptom justifies the next step.
What the evidence can and cannot quantify
There is no independently published percentage or decibel figure in the cited material that applies generally to O-rings, silent switches, foam, or desk mats. Product measurements are not population statistics: the 2 mm thickness and 60 Shore A hardness belong to Sharkoon’s specified Noise Silencer kit, while WASD’s 0.2–0.4 mm travel figure belongs to its dampeners. Treat any promised universal reduction with skepticism unless it identifies the exact keyboard, switch, installation, measurement position, and test conditions.
The practical goal is therefore not “silent” as an absolute claim. It is a measurable reduction in the particular sound path that bothers the listener: less click in the air, less impact at bottom-out, less return-stroke sharpness, less case decay, or less vibration through the desk.

The Bottom Line
Diagnose first, then change one thing at a time: stabilize the board for desk vibration, use a compatible O-ring for bottom-out clack, install compatible silent switches for switch-contact and click noise, and reserve case or plate foam for hollow resonance. Check travel, compatibility, soldering requirements, and warranty before making an irreversible modification.
