Reduce fighting-game input lag by tuning the entire path from your controller to the console or PC, then from the source through HDMI to the display. Start with the display’s Game Mode or low-latency mode, verify the intended resolution and refresh rate on the correct HDMI input, check controller drivers and connection protocol, and test VRR rather than assuming it always helps. No single switch can remove every millisecond of delay, so change one variable at a time and compare the same in-game action under identical conditions.

What input lag actually includes

“Input lag” is the total delay between an action on the controller and the corresponding image change. It is not produced by one component. The path includes the controller and its connection, game and platform processing, video output, the HDMI link, and image processing inside the television or monitor. Xbox Wire’s technical explanation of Xbox Series X latency treats these as connected parts of one chain.

Part of the chain What can add delay What to check
Controller Wireless protocol, driver problems, low battery, or a faulty cable/port Use a supported connection mode, update drivers on PC, and test another port or controller
Game and platform Frame-rate limits, internal buffering, or a mode that does not run at the expected refresh rate Confirm the game’s performance mode and the console or PC output settings
HDMI path A port, cable, or receiver that cannot carry the selected resolution and refresh rate Check the display’s port label and enhanced-input setting; bypass unnecessary equipment while testing
Display processing Noise reduction, motion interpolation, sharpening, or other picture processing Enable Game Mode, Low Latency, or the display’s equivalent
Synchronization VRR or an incompatible refresh combination can cause flicker, stutter, or an unexpected mode Test VRR with the actual game and keep it only when it behaves correctly

Because the delay is cumulative, replacing a controller cannot correct a television that is processing every frame in a high-latency picture mode. Likewise, a new cable cannot compensate for a game that is capped at a lower frame rate.

Use this troubleshooting order

  1. Set the display input to its gaming mode. On the exact HDMI input used by the console or PC, enable Game Mode, Low Latency, or the equivalent setting. If both devices support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), allow ALLM to switch the display automatically.
  2. Verify the source and display mode. Confirm the intended resolution and refresh rate at the console or PC and in the display’s information panel. Do not assume that every HDMI input on a television supports the same mode.
  3. Inspect the connection path. Check whether the selected HDMI port and cable support that mode. A cable replacement matters only when the existing connection is the limiting factor.
  4. Check the controller path. On PC, update the relevant drivers and use the controller’s documented wireless protocol. Epic’s Fortnite PC support recommends 2.4 GHz wireless rather than Bluetooth for that game’s troubleshooting context; it is not a universal latency measurement for every fighting game.
  5. Test VRR. Compare VRR/FreeSync enabled and disabled in the same game. Keep the setting that gives stable motion without flicker or other side effects.
  6. Change one setting at a time. Repeat the same training-mode action under the same platform, display input, resolution, and room conditions so you know which change helped.

Enable the display’s low-latency path

Game Mode and Low Latency

Game Mode normally reduces or bypasses picture processing that is useful for movies but adds delay to interactive video. Select the mode on the input actually connected to your console or PC; many televisions store the setting separately for each input and picture preset. Sony’s support guidance for reducing lag with the Game setting also warns that enabling low latency does not completely eliminate input lag.

Menus differ by model and region. Look under Picture, External Inputs, General, or Gaming rather than relying on a menu name from another television. After enabling the mode, open the display’s information screen and confirm that the source still uses the expected resolution and refresh rate.

ALLM

Auto Low Latency Mode is a standards feature described by the HDMI Licensing Administrator. When the source and display both support ALLM, the source can request the display’s low-latency picture mode automatically. Support is required at both ends, and the display may disable some picture-processing features while ALLM is active. If the television does not switch, use its manual Game Mode and check whether the console, display, and HDMI input all advertise ALLM support.

Turn off processing that is not needed for games

Motion interpolation, noise reduction, dynamic contrast, extra sharpening, and similar enhancements can add processing time. Game Mode usually handles the important changes as a group, but some models leave individual options available. Do not chase a particular brand’s menu label; compare the display’s Game preset with its movie or standard preset and verify the resulting signal information.

Choose a refresh rate the whole setup can carry

Why 120 Hz can feel faster than 60 Hz

A higher refresh rate shortens the time available to transmit each frame. In Xbox Wire’s March 16, 2020 discussion of Xbox Series X latency, the stated comparison is 16.6 milliseconds at 60 Hz versus 8.3 milliseconds at 120 Hz. The article attributes this to frame transmission to the television and says HDMI 2.1 can carry up to 4K at 120 Hz in the described setup. Those figures describe transmission time, not a guaranteed end-to-end latency for every game.

A 120-Hz setting helps only when the game can produce the relevant frame rate and the console or PC, display, HDMI port, and connection all support the selected resolution and refresh combination. If any link falls back to 60 Hz, the source may silently use a different mode than the one you intended.

Confirm the mode instead of trusting a menu selection

  • On the console or PC, select the target resolution and refresh rate.
  • Open the television or monitor’s signal-information panel and confirm the received mode.
  • Check the game’s own performance, frame-rate, or graphics mode. A 120-Hz output does not force a game to render at 120 frames per second.
  • If the option is missing, inspect the specific HDMI input. Port capabilities are often unequal on the same television.

HDMI ports, enhanced formats, and cables

Sony’s television help guidance and Samsung’s 2022 Game Mode directions both emphasize model- and port-specific compatibility. A display may require an “Enhanced,” “Input Signal Plus,” or similarly named format setting before a higher-bandwidth mode appears. Follow the exact guide for your model and region.

Use a cable rated for the mode you are trying to enable, but do not buy one merely because it is newer. If the existing cable already carries the desired resolution and refresh rate, replacing it does not inherently reduce input lag. A replacement is relevant when the current cable, adapter, receiver, or switch prevents the source from entering the supported mode. For diagnosis, connect the console or PC directly to the display and remove intermediate equipment temporarily.

Fix controller and connection problems on PC

Update drivers and verify the selected device

Windows can expose several controller interfaces at once, especially when a device has both wired and wireless modes. Install the current driver or firmware supplied for the controller, then confirm in the game’s input settings that the intended device is active. Disconnect unused gamepads, virtual-controller utilities, and steering or flight peripherals while testing so the game does not switch devices or add an extra translation layer.

Choose a documented wireless protocol

Epic’s support page titled “How do i fix controller input lag in Fortnite?” recommends a 2.4 GHz wireless connection rather than Bluetooth for its PC troubleshooting scenario. Apply that as scoped advice: it is not proof that every 2.4 GHz adapter is faster than every Bluetooth implementation, and it does not establish a universal wired-versus-wireless ranking for fighting games. Use the protocol the controller manufacturer documents for your platform, keep the receiver close to the controller, and test wired operation as a diagnostic comparison.

Rule out controller-side symptoms

  • If every button feels late by the same amount, investigate the display and video path first.
  • If only one button, direction, or stick feels inconsistent, inspect the controller, its firmware, and the game’s bindings.
  • If delay appears after the controller sleeps or reconnects, test a fresh connection and disable aggressive power-saving behavior on the PC’s wireless adapter.
  • If wired and wireless feel different, repeat the comparison at the same frame rate and display mode before drawing a conclusion.

Use VRR deliberately, not automatically

Variable refresh rate (VRR), including technologies marketed as FreeSync, matches the display’s refresh timing to the source’s changing frame rate. Roku’s gaming-settings guidance describes VRR alongside Game Mode and ALLM as model-dependent features. VRR can reduce tearing and uneven motion, which may make timing easier to read, but its effect on measured or perceived fighting-game input delay depends on the source, frame rate, display, and implementation.

A practical VRR test

  1. Record the current resolution, refresh rate, Game Mode state, and VRR state.
  2. Run the same training-mode drill with VRR enabled.
  3. Repeat with VRR disabled, without changing any other setting.
  4. Keep VRR if motion is steadier and no flicker, brightness pulsing, black-screen events, or mode changes occur. Disable it if those side effects appear.

Do not describe VRR as a guaranteed input-lag cure. Its primary benefit is synchronization and smoothness; whether it improves your fighting-game timing must be judged on the actual display and game.

Console and PC checks that prevent false conclusions

Console setup

Set the console’s output resolution and refresh rate explicitly, then check the television’s received-signal panel. Use the console’s compatibility or video-information screen to identify unsupported combinations. If a feature works only on one HDMI input, move the cable to that input and enable the model’s enhanced format option. Keep the console connected directly to the display while troubleshooting soundbars, capture cards, AV receivers, and HDMI switches.

PC setup

In the operating system’s display settings and the graphics driver panel, select the intended refresh rate for the gaming display rather than leaving it at a desktop default. Use the game’s exclusive-fullscreen or low-latency options only when the game documents them and they behave correctly; test one change at a time. Ensure the game is rendering at the same resolution and refresh rate you verified on the display, because a desktop running at 144 Hz does not mean the game is doing so.

Fighting-game-specific discipline

Use training mode, a repeatable recording, or a fixed timing exercise for comparisons. Online matches add network delay and rollback behavior that are separate from local controller-to-display latency. Test locally first; otherwise a connection problem can look like a television or controller problem.

When hardware replacement is justified

Replace the display only for a documented limitation

A gaming monitor or low-latency television becomes relevant when the current display lacks a usable Game Mode, the required refresh rate, the correct HDMI input, or compatible VRR/ALLM behavior. Compare exact models using the manufacturer’s measured display input-lag figures when available, supported refresh rates at your chosen resolution, port capabilities, and observed VRR behavior. The available evidence does not establish a universal fastest display.

Buy an HDMI cable only to unlock a supported mode

If both source and display support a high-refresh mode but the existing cable or connection path prevents it, a cable rated for that mode can remove the bottleneck. Confirm the port and source requirements first. A functioning cable that already carries the target signal will not, by itself, make button presses register sooner.

Replace the controller after isolating it

Consider another platform-compatible controller only after driver, protocol, battery, port, and display checks point to the controller. Razer identifies the Kitsune as an all-button optical arcade controller for PlayStation 5 and PC, but that product description does not establish lower latency than other controllers. Choose on compatibility, layout, switch feel, and documented connection modes rather than an assumed universal latency advantage.

Symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Likely area Next test
Every game feels delayed on one television Display processing or HDMI input Enable Game Mode on that input and verify the received signal
Delay occurs only at one resolution or refresh rate Port, cable, enhanced format, or unsupported mode Try the display’s documented high-bandwidth port and a direct connection
Only PC wireless play feels delayed Driver, protocol, receiver placement, or power management Update drivers and compare the documented 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, and wired modes
Motion tears or flickers with VRR VRR implementation or range Disable VRR and compare the same drill
Only one button or direction misbehaves Controller hardware or mapping Test another controller and inspect bindings before changing display settings
Local play is responsive but online play is not Network or rollback conditions Diagnose the connection separately from local input latency

How to compare two complete setups

When choosing between displays, consoles, PCs, or controller arrangements, compare the complete configuration rather than one advertised feature. Record the display’s measured input-lag result if the manufacturer provides one, the supported refresh rate at your target resolution, the exact HDMI input required, the controller’s compatible connection modes, and VRR behavior under the game you play. Independent, comparable measurements for named displays and controllers are not established by the sources cited here, so a product cannot be ranked responsibly from a “120 Hz” or “optical” label alone.

Keep a short test log with the platform, game mode, resolution, refresh rate, VRR state, controller connection, and cable path. If a change improves timing, retain the configuration details; if it does not, restore the previous setting before testing the next variable. This prevents a display, source, and controller change from being mistaken for a single proven fix.

Limits you should expect

Low-latency settings reduce avoidable processing; they do not make the entire chain instantaneous. Sony’s gaming-assist guidance states, “Even if you set Low latency to On, it is not possible to completely reduce the input lag.” Treat that as a limitation of the feature, not as a benchmark for every Sony display or a claim that other displays behave identically.

The same qualification applies to refresh rate, VRR, cables, and wireless protocols. A higher refresh rate can shorten frame transmission time, VRR can improve synchronization, and a supported controller connection can remove a device-specific problem, but each result depends on the exact game, platform, display, port, and settings.
