To improve PS5 Remote Play on a PC, first confirm the console, app, computer, and network are set up correctly. Then adjust resolution and frame rate in the PS Remote Play app, testing one setting at a time and keeping the highest combination that stays smooth. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, but neither figure guarantees low input lag.
Remote Play sends the PS5’s game display to your PC; it does not make the PC render the game. That distinction helps set expectations: the available controls tune the stream, and Sony does not publish a universal setting or a measured lag reduction. Use the steps below to identify setup restrictions, compare settings, and find a balance that works reliably on your network.
What PS5-to-PC streaming does—and what it cannot change
Streaming a PS5 game to a PC uses Sony’s PS Remote Play app. The PS5 runs the game and sends its display to the computer; the PC is receiving the stream, not rendering the game itself. This distinction matters when tuning picture settings: changing Remote Play resolution or frame rate adjusts the stream, not the PS5 game’s native rendering settings.

A setting that looks sharper or moves more smoothly is only useful if the stream remains consistent on your setup. Treat changes as troubleshooting, not a guaranteed lag-reduction method.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Think of picture quality and responsiveness as two things to observe during the same test. Resolution concerns how detailed the received image looks; frame rate concerns how smoothly motion appears. The highest available values are not automatically the best choice if the stream becomes uneven. Likewise, a stream that looks clear in a still scene may not feel as smooth when the game has lots of motion. Test with the game and conditions you actually intend to use, rather than assuming one brief menu check proves a setting will remain stable.
There is also a difference between a console or app failing to connect and a stream that connects but does not feel good to play. A failure to find the PS5 calls for setup or pairing checks. A connection that works but stutters calls for checking the activity restrictions, network environment, and app’s picture settings. Sorting those symptoms into the right category can save time: changing resolution will not solve an unsupported activity, and pairing the console again does not establish that the connection will have low latency.
Set up Remote Play and check compatibility
Before adjusting picture quality, verify that the app can connect and that the computer meets Sony’s listed requirements. Sony’s US PC/Mac support guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following minimums; operating-system support can change, so check Sony’s current requirements if your system is newer or differs from these versions.
| Computer | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Storage | Other listed requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 | Seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later | 2 GB RAM | 100 MB | 1024 × 768 display or higher, sound card, and USB port |
| Mac | macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, or Tahoe | 2 GB RAM | 40 MB |
Sony names DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers for PC/Mac Remote Play. The listed computer requirements are compatibility thresholds, not a promise that every system meeting them will deliver the same stream quality or latency. Check Sony’s current PC/Mac support page if you are using an operating-system version not listed above; a changing OS list should not be treated as a permanent compatibility guarantee.
The requirements are worth checking before troubleshooting a picture problem because they answer a different question from network speed. The listed memory, processor, storage, display, sound-card, and USB details describe Sony’s computer requirements. The 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures below describe connection-speed guidance. Meeting one set of conditions does not establish that the other is met, nor does either set promise a particular response time or image quality.
Enable Remote Play and connect the app
- Install the PS Remote Play app on the PC and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5. The account match is part of Sony’s setup workflow, so check it before repeatedly changing video settings.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play. If the feature is not enabled on the console, the PC app cannot complete the intended connection workflow.
- In the PC app, select the PS5 to connect. Once connected, open the app settings to find the available resolution and frame-rate controls.
If the app cannot find the console, put the PC and PS5 on the same network. On the console, open its Remote Play settings, choose Pair Device, and enter the displayed code in the app. Manual pairing is a discovery step, not a picture-quality adjustment: complete it first, then judge stream quality after the app connects.

Keep the distinction between selecting a console and tuning a stream in mind. If the PS5 is not listed or cannot be reached, follow the same-network and Pair Device procedure. If it connects but playback is unstable, proceed to connection and setting checks. Pairing by itself is not a fix for stutter or a guarantee of lower input lag.

Check the connection before changing picture settings
PlayStation’s published guidance is a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and a recommendation of at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are connection-speed thresholds, not measurements of input lag and not guarantees of a particular image quality. Bandwidth alone does not describe whether delivery is consistent or whether the network environment is causing interruptions.
PlayStation says that “the quality and connectivity of your play experience may vary depending on your network environment.” That is why a connection that meets the published speed recommendation can still have a poor experience. Compare your setup with Sony’s figures, then test whether the stream behaves consistently rather than treating a speed figure as a diagnosis.
Use the figures as a first checkpoint. A result below the 5 Mbps minimum means the connection is below Sony’s stated threshold. Reaching 5 Mbps meets that minimum, but it does not meet the 15 Mbps recommendation. Reaching at least 15 Mbps matches the recommendation for a better experience, but it still cannot tell you by itself whether the stream will be stable or responsive. PlayStation does not present either number as a lag guarantee.
- If possible, reduce avoidable network contention while playing and check whether the stream becomes more consistent. This is a practical test, not a change PlayStation promises will resolve every case.
- A wired Ethernet connection to the router is an optional setup change to try. Sony’s guidance does not say that using a cable will eliminate lag or fix every network.
- Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the stream actually improves. If you change several things together, it becomes harder to identify which one affected the result.
An Ethernet cable may be relevant if you want to connect the PS5 or PC to a router by wire, but it is not a required purchase in Sony’s Remote Play guidance. The official guidance supports paying attention to the network environment; it does not prescribe a particular cable length, rating, brand, or model. Try a wired connection only if it is practical for your setup, then compare the experience rather than assuming the cable guarantees a fix.
When comparing results, keep the test reasonably consistent: use the same game and the same resolution/frame-rate settings while checking whether playback is steadier. Then make one change and compare again. This simple method does not isolate every possible network condition, but it helps avoid attributing a difference to a picture setting when other parts of the setup changed at the same time.

Tune resolution and frame rate for a stable stream
Use the resolution and frame-rate controls in the PS Remote Play app’s settings. The practical goal is the clearest, smoothest stream your connection can sustain consistently—not the highest settings regardless of stutter. Because Sony does not publish an ideal combination or measured latency effects for these controls, judge changes on your own setup.
- Start from a known baseline. Note the current resolution and frame-rate choices before changing them. Play for long enough to notice whether the image is stable or stutters. Observing the existing behavior gives you a comparison point, rather than leaving you unsure whether a change helped.
- Decide what you want to improve. If the main complaint is a stream that stutters, test a lower setting. If the picture is stable but you want more detail or smoother-looking motion, raise a setting individually and check whether the stream stays consistent. These are practical ways to compare the controls, not Sony-tested prescriptions.
- Change only one control at a time. If the stream stutters, lower either resolution or frame rate, then test again. Changing both together may make the stream look different, but it will not tell you which adjustment corresponded with the change.
- Keep a change only if it helps. If playback becomes more consistent after lowering one setting, keep that change while assessing the other setting separately. If it does not improve the experience, return to the previous choice before trying another adjustment.
- Raise settings gradually after stability returns. When playback is stable, raise one setting at a time and retest. Keep the highest setting that remains smooth; undo changes that bring stutter back. There is no need to keep an increase simply because it is the higher option.
- Judge the actual play experience. Check both the stream’s consistency and responsiveness while playing. A sharper picture is not automatically an improvement if it comes with interruptions, and smoother-looking motion does not establish that input lag has been reduced.
Resolution and frame rate involve different trade-offs. Higher resolution can make the streamed image sharper, while a higher frame rate can make motion appear smoother. Either choice may be less useful if the stream cannot deliver it consistently. There is no setting in this guidance that guarantees lower input lag, so evaluate responsiveness as well as the picture during each test.
Do not confuse the app’s stream resolution control with a control for the PS5 game’s native rendering resolution. The PS5 runs the game; the PC receives its display through Remote Play. The available information confirms app controls for stream resolution and frame rate, but it does not establish that changing them alters the game’s native rendering or produces a measured latency reduction.
A useful way to compare the options is to consider three questions: Is the image detailed enough for you? Does motion look smooth enough? Does playback remain consistent while you play? Resolution most directly describes the sharpness-versus-stream-stability trade-off, while frame rate describes the motion-smoothness-versus-consistency trade-off. Network stability matters to both, but PlayStation does not quantify the individual contribution of particular network factors in its Remote Play overview.
Do not look for a single magic combination based only on a generic recommendation. The official pages reviewed confirm that the settings are adjustable, not a one-size-fits-all preset. If a higher setting looks better and stays stable, you can keep it. If it brings back stutter, lower that one control and retest. The point is to find the highest stable picture on the connection you actually have, not to chase a setting that is nominally higher.
Rule out activities Remote Play does not support
Some apparent connection or settings problems are actually restrictions on what Remote Play can do. PlayStation Support says Remote Play is unavailable while the PS5 is broadcasting, when launching a game that does not support Remote Play, and when launching Media App or Disc Player. If the connection fails only during one of those activities, changing resolution or frame rate will not remove the restriction.

Check this list when Remote Play fails at a specific point rather than assuming that the network is responsible. If you are broadcasting from the PS5, that is a listed restriction. If the issue occurs only when trying to launch a particular game, check whether that game supports Remote Play. Media App and Disc Player are also specifically listed as unavailable activities. In those cases, changing stream quality settings does not address the documented limitation.

These restrictions are separate from the computer requirements and connection-speed guidance. A supported PC and a connection above the recommended speed do not override an unsupported activity. Similarly, a restriction tied to broadcasting or a particular app is not evidence that the PC needs more memory or that the resolution is too high.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Confirm setup: Check that the app is installed, you are signed in with the same PlayStation account as the console, and Remote Play is enabled at PS5 Settings > System > Remote Play. These are the core setup checks before looking for a picture-quality cause.
- Check computer compatibility: Compare your operating system and hardware with Sony’s current PC/Mac requirements. The listed minimums can change over time. The US support guidance accessed in 2026 lists Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 and a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later for Windows, plus 2 GB RAM, 100 MB storage, a 1024 × 768 display or higher, a sound card, and USB port. Its Mac list includes macOS Big Sur through Tahoe, 2 GB RAM, and 40 MB storage.
- Check controller support: Sony names DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 for PC/Mac Remote Play. Treat this as Sony’s listed support information, and consult the current Sony page if your setup or operating system is not listed. Controller support does not determine the connection speed or promise a particular latency result.
- Check the network: Compare connection speed with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, while remembering these figures do not measure latency or guarantee a stable experience. If practical, test whether reducing avoidable network contention or trying a wired connection changes consistency; neither action is a guaranteed remedy.
- Test picture settings: Adjust resolution or frame rate one at a time. Lower a setting if the stream stutters; raise settings individually only after playback is stable. Keep the setting that produces the clearest, smoothest consistent result, and reverse an adjustment if it makes the experience worse.
- Fix console discovery: Put the PC and PS5 on the same network, choose Pair Device in the PS5 Remote Play settings, and enter the displayed code in the app. Use this step when the app cannot locate or connect to the console, not as a substitute for testing an already-connected stream.
- Check activity restrictions: Make sure the console is not broadcasting and that you are not trying to launch an unsupported game, Media App, or Disc Player. Those listed restrictions cannot be corrected by changing resolution or frame rate.
The order is intended to separate different kinds of problems. First establish that Remote Play is enabled and the app can reach the console. Then check that the PC and activity are supported. Once the stream works, compare network and picture settings. If a connection problem is actually a pairing issue or a restriction, raising bandwidth or lowering resolution is unlikely to address the documented cause.

These steps can help identify a setup issue or find a more stable balance between stream clarity and smooth motion. Sony’s published guidance does not provide a measured number of milliseconds saved, a guaranteed fix for lag, or a universal best setting. If the stream remains inconsistent after checking compatibility, restrictions, connection speed, and settings, the available guidance does not establish a specific cause or a guaranteed remedy for that individual network.
Use Sony’s figures and requirements for what they are: published minimums and recommendations that help you check a setup. Use app settings as adjustable trade-offs, and use repeatable tests to decide what looks and feels better in your own situation. If you still have trouble, return to the symptom: cannot discover the console, verify same-network pairing; unable to launch an activity, check the documented restrictions; connected but unstable, revisit network conditions and lower one picture setting at a time.

What internet speed do I need for PS5 Remote Play on PC?
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These figures are connection-speed guidance, not a guarantee of low input lag or stable picture quality; PlayStation notes that quality and connectivity vary with the network environment.
How do I change Remote Play resolution and frame rate?
Open the settings in the PS Remote Play app on your PC or Mac and adjust the resolution and frame-rate controls. Test one setting at a time. Lower a setting if the stream stutters; once playback is stable, raise settings individually and keep the highest combination that remains smooth.
Why is my PS5 Remote Play lagging on my PC even though my speed is above 15 Mbps?
The 15 Mbps figure is PlayStation’s recommendation for a better experience, not a latency measurement or guarantee. PlayStation says quality and connectivity can vary depending on the network environment. Check for avoidable network contention, test a wired connection if practical, and compare resolution and frame rate one at a time. Sony’s guidance does not identify a universal cause for every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy can’t the PS Remote Play app find my PS5?
Make sure the PC and PS5 are on the same network. In the PS5 Remote Play settings, select Pair Device and enter the code displayed on the console in the app. Also confirm Remote Play is enabled and that the app is signed in with the same PlayStation account as the console.
Can I use Remote Play while broadcasting or playing media apps?
PlayStation Support lists Remote Play as unavailable while the PS5 is broadcasting, when launching a game that does not support Remote Play, and when launching Media App or Disc Player. Changing resolution or frame rate does not remove those restrictions.
Does lowering Remote Play resolution change the PS5 game’s native resolution?
The PS5 runs the game and sends its display to the PC. The resolution control in the PC/Mac Remote Play app adjusts the stream; the official guidance does not say that it changes the game’s native rendering resolution.
Will Ethernet definitely fix Remote Play lag?
No. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional setup change to test, but PlayStation’s guidance does not promise that a cable will eliminate lag or improve every setup. Compare the stream before and after the change rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix.
