Reduce aim delay by separating local input-to-display latency from network lag, measuring a repeatable baseline, then changing one part of the chain at a time. Start with the game’s integrated low-latency option (such as NVIDIA Reflex, when supported), verify stable frame pacing and the monitor’s intended refresh rate, and keep mouse settings consistent. Practice aim separately: lower latency can make inputs feel more immediate, but it cannot replace deliberate tracking, target-switching, and flick practice.

What “input lag” includes

A click or mouse movement passes through several stages before you see the result. The mouse samples movement, the game and CPU process it, the GPU renders a frame, and the display scans that frame. NVIDIA’s latency terminology distinguishes mouse latency, PC-plus-display latency, and total system latency. Treating all of those as one problem makes troubleshooting harder.

What you notice Most likely area to investigate What it does not prove
Aim feels consistently behind your hand, even in an offline practice range Mouse settings, game/render queue, frame rate, or display response It is not proof that your internet connection is slow
Crosshair motion looks uneven or hitches while average FPS appears high Frame-time spikes, background load, or an unstable frame rate A higher peak-FPS number will automatically fix it
Screen tearing or a distracting mismatch between camera movement and the display Refresh-rate and synchronization choices That a particular synchronization mode is best for every system
Rubber-banding, delayed server actions, or players teleporting Network latency, packet loss, or server conditions That a mouse, monitor, or Reflex setting can repair the connection

The rest of this guide focuses on local input-to-display delay and aiming. Network symptoms need a separate connection and server investigation.

Establish a baseline before changing settings

Human perception is useful for noticing a problem but poor at estimating a small change when the test conditions move at the same time. Create a simple baseline so every adjustment has a fair comparison.

  1. Choose one repeatable scene. Use the same practice range, bot scenario, or quiet section of a map. Avoid comparing a crowded match with an empty menu.
  2. Keep the workload constant. Record resolution, graphics preset, field of view, frame-rate limit, synchronization mode, and approximate FPS. Use the same display input and refresh-rate setting.
  3. Record the starting experience. Note whether the problem is delay, uneven motion, tearing, or network behavior. If the game exposes a latency or frame-time metric, capture it rather than relying only on a feeling.
  4. Change one variable. Toggle one setting, repeat the same movement and firing test, and write down the result. Changing five options at once prevents you from knowing which one mattered.
  5. Repeat the comparison. Run several short passes instead of trusting one unusually good or bad moment. Keep the same mouse sensitivity and input technique.

Some supported games and hardware can provide a latency readout. NVIDIA’s Reflex Analyzer is designed to measure mouse and system latency; a PC-plus-display measurement can be made without a Reflex-branded mouse. Use a compatible measurement method when available, and label the result with the scene and settings that produced it. A subjective improvement is not a measured reduction.

Use the game’s integrated low-latency feature first

How NVIDIA Reflex fits into the pipeline

NVIDIA describes Reflex Low Latency as technology that “synchronizes CPU and GPU pipelines for just-in-time rendering.” In practical terms, the game coordinates work so frames are not rendered unnecessarily far ahead of the input being acted on. This is an in-game implementation, not a universal switch that applies to every title or every graphics card.

Testing Reflex in a supported shooter

  1. Open the game’s video, graphics, or latency section and look for an NVIDIA Reflex or low-latency option.
  2. Read the title’s own description. Options and names vary; some games offer a basic mode and an enhanced or boost mode.
  3. Record your baseline in the same scene, then enable the supported option without changing resolution, frame-rate limit, or synchronization.
  4. Repeat the scene and compare the game’s latency or frame-time metric, if provided, along with the consistency of mouse response.
  5. If the game becomes less stable, produces new frame-time spikes, or offers no measurable or repeatable benefit on your system, restore the previous setting and test another variable.

Do not assume a generic driver-control-panel “low latency” toggle is equivalent to a game-integrated implementation. Check the specific shooter’s current support and the hardware requirements stated by its developer. A setting that exists in one title may be absent, differently named, or limited in another.

Make frame rate and display timing predictable

Verify the operating system is using the intended refresh rate

In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and check the selected refresh rate for the monitor. Then check the shooter’s display menu; some games can select a different mode from the desktop. A high refresh rate is useful only when the display is actually running at it and the system can feed it frames consistently.

Look at frame time, not only the FPS headline

A high average or peak FPS can hide uneven delivery. Watch for sudden drops, long frame times, and oscillation while turning or entering a fight. Reduce the setting that is saturating the GPU or CPU, or use the game’s frame-rate limit to create a steadier workload. Keep the change isolated during testing so you can tell whether smoother delivery, rather than a higher peak, changed the feel.

Choose synchronization according to the trade-off

Synchronization can reduce visible tearing, while an uncapped or differently capped configuration can minimize queueing in some systems. The right choice depends on the game, GPU load, monitor support, and your tolerance for tearing. NVIDIA’s guidance discusses particular G-SYNC and Reflex configurations, including frame-rate caps intended to avoid tearing while retaining low latency. Those examples are conditional, not a universal cap to copy into every shooter.

What the refresh-rate research does and does not show

NVIDIA’s experimental paper, “Latency of 30 ms Benefits First Person Targeting Tasks More Than Refresh Rate Above 60 Hz,” studied a specific targeting task and setup. The experiment used 240 Hz G-SYNC monitors and an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti GPU. Its title should not be rewritten as “refresh rates above 60 Hz do not matter”: the paper notes that higher refresh rates still matter because they also reduce latency, while its result is bounded by the task and equipment tested. Treat the findings as context for a controlled comparison, not a guarantee that buying a particular refresh-rate monitor will improve every player’s aim.

Check the mouse path without chasing specifications

Make the existing mouse consistent

  • Confirm the mouse remains connected reliably and that the game recognizes its input without intermittent dropouts.
  • Use one sensitivity and keep it unchanged while comparing latency settings. A sensitivity change can make aim feel different even when system latency is identical.
  • Check the mouse’s polling configuration and verify that the selected rate is stable in the game. Polling is the interval at which the device reports movement, so it is a legitimate part of the input path; a higher number is not automatically the best choice for every computer or game.
  • Close background software that changes profiles or repeatedly interrupts the game while testing. Re-enable it later if you need its features.

If a higher polling setting causes stutter, inconsistent frame times, or compatibility problems, use the stable setting and measure again. The useful outcome is a repeatable response, not the largest specification on a product page.

When a gaming mouse is a sensible hardware consideration

A mouse is the physical input device, so replacing one can be reasonable when the current unit has unreliable switches, connection faults, an unsuitable shape, or a polling mode that the game cannot handle well. No evidence supports promising that a particular mouse, polling rate, or model improves every player’s aim. Identify the limitation first, then compare the replacement under the same scene and sensitivity.

Separate technical responsiveness from aim skill

Lower local latency can make your input appear sooner, but it does not teach target selection, movement control, or recoil management. Treat the technical and skill problems as two parallel tracks.

Keep a stable sensitivity and setup

Use a sensitivity that lets you turn comfortably while retaining control for small corrections. Avoid changing sensitivity, field of view, mouse grip, and graphics settings at the same time as a latency test. Consistency gives practice a stable motor target and makes your comparisons meaningful.

Match drills to the skill you need

  • Tracking: follow a continuously moving target while keeping the crosshair centered.
  • Target switching: move between targets at different locations, emphasizing controlled stopping rather than frantic movement.
  • Flick control: make a deliberate jump to a target, then confirm the crosshair before firing.
  • In-game transfer: repeat the same skill against the shooter’s movement, weapon timing, and visibility conditions.

NVIDIA reported a KovaaK’s FPS aim-trainer experiment involving more than 15,000 players between December 2021 and April 2022. That participant count describes the experiment; it is not a guaranteed improvement percentage for an individual player. Use an aim trainer or the game’s range to isolate a skill, then verify that it transfers to actual matches.

Review quality, not just scores

After a short session, identify whether misses came from stopping too early, overcorrecting, losing a moving target, or firing before the crosshair settled. Choose the next drill from that pattern. Short, repeatable sessions are easier to compare than an occasional marathon in which fatigue changes your mechanics.

Decide whether hardware is actually the bottleneck

Option When it addresses a plausible limitation What to verify before spending
Gaming mouse The current mouse has connection, switch, shape, or stable-polling problems That the game and system support the intended polling configuration and that the problem is reproducible with the current device
High-refresh-rate monitor The existing display is running at a lower refresh rate than your PC and game can use consistently GPU performance, supported synchronization, input connection, selected operating-system refresh rate, and the game’s frame-rate stability
Mousepad You need a more comfortable or predictable physical surface Comfort and control; the available evidence does not establish that a particular surface reduces electronic latency
FPS aim trainer You want isolated repetition for tracking, switching, or flick control That the drills match the skill you need and transfer to the shooter, rather than relying on a score alone

Settings and measurement can cost nothing. Hardware prices, availability, and model capabilities vary by region and date, so buy only after a measured or clearly observed limitation points to that category.

Do not confuse network lag with local input delay

A local latency change affects how quickly your own input is processed and displayed. It does not shorten the route to a game server. If you see rubber-banding, delayed hit registration, sudden position corrections, or server warnings, record ping and packet-loss indicators, compare another server or match, and investigate the connection separately. A faster mouse, higher refresh rate, or Reflex setting cannot correct a congested route or an overloaded server.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The crosshair feels delayed everywhere

  1. Test an offline range or practice mode to remove server variables.
  2. Verify the display refresh rate in both Windows and the game.
  3. Record frame time and GPU/CPU load during the same movement.
  4. Test the game’s integrated low-latency option, if supported.
  5. Check mouse connection, sensitivity, and polling stability.

The game feels smooth but aim looks inconsistent

  1. Look for frame-time spikes rather than relying on average FPS.
  2. Repeat the test while turning, firing, and entering a busy area; some workloads expose a bottleneck only under load.
  3. Lower the setting that saturates the GPU or CPU, or apply a stable cap supported by your synchronization setup.
  4. Repeat the same scene before judging the result.

There is tearing or visible judder

  1. Confirm the monitor is running at the desired refresh rate.
  2. Check which synchronization modes the monitor, GPU, and game support together.
  3. Test the documented cap and synchronization combination for that setup.
  4. Compare visual smoothness and latency separately; eliminating tearing may involve a trade-off you can choose consciously.

Only online matches feel delayed

  1. Compare offline or training behavior.
  2. Record ping, packet loss, and server-region information when the symptom occurs.
  3. Test another server or time period before changing local hardware.

A practical order of operations

  1. Classify the symptom as local delay, frame pacing, tearing, or network behavior.
  2. Capture a baseline in one repeatable scene with fixed resolution, sensitivity, refresh rate, and workload.
  3. Use a supported in-game latency feature and compare it under the same conditions.
  4. Verify refresh rate and investigate frame-time stability before buying hardware.
  5. Check mouse connection and polling stability, changing only one setting per test.
  6. Practice the specific aim skill that still fails after the setup is consistent.
  7. Consider a mouse or monitor only when an existing limitation is identified and the replacement can be tested against the baseline.

Bottom line

The reliable path is diagnosis, not a universal “low-lag” preset: distinguish local latency from network lag, measure a repeatable baseline, test the shooter’s integrated low-latency feature, keep frame delivery and refresh timing stable, and use a consistent mouse setup. Then train tracking, switching, and flick control as separate skills. The available studies and guidance support conditional testing, not a promise that one polling rate, refresh-rate number, or purchase will improve every player’s aim.
