The most reliable way to make a retro-gaming CRT feel responsive and look correct is to keep the entire signal path consistent, measure the CRT against another display with the same source, and calibrate Brightness, Contrast, color, geometry, and overscan with test patterns. The free, open-source 240p Test Suite provides the lag and picture patterns needed for this work. Start with ordinary user-menu controls, record every original setting, and treat any lag result as a comparison with your chosen CRT—not as a universal specification for all CRTs.

What actually determines lag and picture quality

Input lag is the delay between a console changing its video output and the image appearing on the screen. The display is only one part of that delay. The console’s video mode, cable, switcher, converter, scaler, receiver, and the display’s processing can all change what you feel. If you change more than one part of the chain while comparing screens, you cannot tell which component caused the difference.

Picture quality is similarly cumulative. A correct 240p signal can be damaged by an unsuitable converter or an incorrect display mode before it reaches the CRT. Once the signal arrives, Brightness determines where near-black detail sits, Contrast determines how much highlight information is retained, and geometry and overscan determine whether the image is centered, straight, and fully framed.

A CRT is useful as a baseline because it can provide a low-processing reference for a comparison. That does not mean every CRT has identical delay, nor that every CRT will outperform every modern display. A controlled, same-source test tells you the relative difference between the displays in your particular setup.

Prepare a repeatable setup before changing anything

Use the same source and video mode

Choose one original console and one game or test cartridge that produces the signal you normally play. Keep the console, game, resolution, refresh rate, cable type, switcher, and converter unchanged while making adjustments. A 240p signal and an interlaced or scaled signal can be treated differently by the same display, so a result from one mode should not be generalized to another.

Choose the appropriate CRT input

Connect the console through the best input that both devices support, while keeping the path as simple as practical. Use the same cable and intermediate equipment for every display in a comparison. If a switcher or converter is required, leave it in the chain for both observations; removing it for one screen turns the comparison into a test of two different systems.

Install the 240p Test Suite

The 240p Test Suite is free, open-source console software designed to evaluate 240p and scaled signals. Its tests cover lag, color, black and white levels, geometry, linearity, and overscan. It supports numerous classic platforms. The SNES build requires a flash cartridge capable of running homebrew software; the cartridge requirement is specific to that platform and is not a paid license for the suite.

Record the current picture settings

Photograph or write down the CRT’s current Brightness, Contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and geometry-related user-menu values before editing them. If the set exposes a service menu, record its values as well, but do not change service parameters casually. Model-specific service adjustments are not interchangeable between CRTs, and an incorrect value can create convergence, geometry, or safety problems.

Warm up consistently

Let the CRT reach its normal operating temperature before judging geometry or color. Make comparisons after the same warm-up period and with the same room lighting. This does not turn the result into a laboratory measurement, but it removes an avoidable source of variation between observations.

Measure input lag against a CRT baseline

Use one signal on both displays

The documented relative-lag method sends one console signal to the CRT and to the display being assessed at the same time. Use a suitable splitter or equivalent simultaneous arrangement that does not alter the signal mode. Run the 240p Test Suite Lag Test on both screens, photograph or record the frame readings, and subtract the CRT reading from the other display’s reading. The result is the additional delay of the comparison display relative to that CRT in that setup.

This is a relative measurement, not a universal claim such as “all CRTs have zero lag” or “this television always adds a fixed number of milliseconds.” The baseline CRT, splitter, source mode, camera timing, and display settings all affect what you observe. Keep those conditions written down if you want to compare later.

Interpret frame readings carefully

Compare the two screens from the same captured moment rather than taking separate measurements with different games or cables. A consistent difference across several captures is more useful than one unusually high or low frame. If the readings vary, first check that both displays are receiving the same mode and that no display is switching processing modes between captures.

Understand the Manual Lag Test’s limitation

The suite also includes a Manual Lag Test. You press a controller button when a moving target lines up with a marker, and the software averages your responses. It can expose a gross problem, but it is only a loose approximation because reaction time, anticipation, fatigue, and controller latency are included in the result. Use it for a quick sanity check, not as a precision instrument or a substitute for the simultaneous-display method.

Reduce avoidable processing

On a display that offers multiple picture modes, select the mode intended for direct or game input when one is available, then disable optional processing that changes the signal timing. The exact labels differ by model, so do not assume a setting with a particular name behaves identically on another display. Confirm the effect with the same lag test rather than trusting the label.

Set black level with the PLUGE pattern

What the Brightness control does

Brightness, often called black level, sets how dark tones are mapped. Too low and shadow detail disappears into a single black field; too high and blacks look gray and the picture loses depth. Use the 240p Test Suite’s PLUGE pattern rather than adjusting from a random game scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Display the PLUGE pattern for the console and signal mode you are using.
  2. Reduce Brightness until the side bars are no longer visible.
  3. Raise Brightness slowly until those side bars are just visible.
  4. Stop at that point and check a dark game scene for retained shadow detail without a gray-looking black background.

The instruction is deliberately narrow: the side bars should be just visible after the reduction-and-raise sequence. Do not raise Brightness further merely to reveal every dark object in one game; that can lift the entire black level.

Set white level with the color-bar pattern

What the Contrast control does

Contrast, or white level, controls the intensity of bright output. Excessive Contrast clips adjacent bright steps together, removing highlight distinctions. Too little Contrast makes the image dull and can reduce the useful range of the display.

  1. Open the suite’s color-bar pattern for the same platform and signal mode.
  2. Raise Contrast until the brightest adjacent test blocks can no longer be distinguished.
  3. Lower Contrast slowly until the distinction between those blocks returns.
  4. Check a bright game scene and confirm that white objects remain bright without merging into featureless patches.

These are pattern-based starting points. Console output levels and pattern variants can differ, so follow the instructions shown by the suite build you are using. If you change Brightness or Contrast later, revisit the other control because the two settings interact perceptually.

Correct color without losing the reference

Use the suite’s color patterns first

The 240p Test Suite includes color-oriented patterns as part of its calibration set. Use them to identify an obvious color cast, uneven channel response, or a tint control that is clearly off. Make one small change at a time, wait for the screen to settle, and record the new value. Avoid trying to match a remembered screenshot: room lighting, console video levels, and the display’s phosphors all influence appearance.

Keep ordinary play separate from measured calibration

For normal gaming, a stable Brightness and Contrast setting plus a neutral-looking color balance is usually sufficient. A colorimeter is optional, not a prerequisite. It becomes useful when you want measured grayscale and color rather than a visually acceptable setup.

Use geometry, linearity, and overscan patterns

Center and straighten the image

Open the suite’s grid and geometry-oriented patterns. Check that the image is centered, that horizontal and vertical lines remain acceptably straight, and that circles or other regular shapes do not change size dramatically across the screen. CRT geometry can vary by model and by picture mode, so judge what is important for your games rather than chasing mathematical perfection at every edge.

Check linearity

Linearity problems make equally spaced objects appear compressed in one area and stretched in another. Use the grid or linearity pattern to identify whether the distortion is severe enough to affect gameplay or text. Ordinary user geometry controls may offer only limited correction. Do not enter a service menu solely to remove a small imperfection, and never apply another model’s service values.

Set overscan conservatively

The overscan pattern shows how much of the generated image is being cropped by the CRT. Confirm that status bars, score displays, and other edge information from the games you play remain visible. A little overscan was common in original television presentation, but excessive cropping can hide useful content. Make the smallest geometry adjustment that keeps important edges inside the visible area, then verify with an actual game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced grayscale and color calibration

A community calibration procedure combines the suite’s IRE patterns with a colorimeter and HCFR software. The meter measures grayscale and color points, while the software helps reveal tracking errors that are difficult to see by eye. This is an advanced project rather than a requirement for responsive play.

Compare CRT, HD CRT, and modern displays by behavior

There is no definitive ranking in the available procedures because the result depends on the exact model, signal mode, and processing path. Compare the options using the same source and these five questions:

Comparison point What to check Why it matters
Relative display lag Run the same Lag Test feed to the CRT and the other display; record frame readings. Shows added delay relative to your baseline rather than relying on a model stereotype.
Signal handling Verify that the display accepts and correctly handles the console’s 240p, interlaced, or scaled mode. A display that treats the mode unexpectedly can add processing or produce an incorrect image.
Geometry and overscan Use the grid and overscan patterns, then confirm with a game’s edge information. Cropping, curvature, or poor centering can matter more than a small sharpness difference.
Black and white detail Set PLUGE Brightness and color-bar Contrast, then inspect dark and bright scenes. Preserves shadow detail and highlight separation instead of merely making the picture brighter.
Preferred image character Decide whether you value CRT motion and phosphor appearance, HD sharpness, or a modern display’s flexibility. “Best” is partly a preference once lag and signal compatibility are acceptable.

For a modern display fed by a scaler, include the scaler in every lag and picture comparison. Testing the panel without the scaler does not describe the setup you will actually play.

Troubleshoot common problems systematically

The lag difference changes from test to test

  • Confirm that both screens are showing the same console output at the same time.
  • Check that a display has not switched between picture modes or signal-processing modes.
  • Remove unnecessary converters or test each converter separately.
  • Repeat several captures and compare the pattern of results, not one outlier.
  • Use the Manual Lag Test only as a rough cross-check because human response is part of its result.

Dark scenes look crushed or gray

  • Return to PLUGE and lower Brightness until the side bars disappear, then raise it until they are just visible.
  • Check that a converter or console setting is not changing the output level.
  • Do not compensate for crushed blacks by pushing Contrast; Contrast is set with the white-level pattern.

Bright details merge together

  • Open the color-bar pattern and reduce Contrast until the brightest adjacent blocks separate again.
  • Recheck Brightness afterward and verify the result in a bright game scene.
  • Look for a display mode that applies additional enhancement or dynamic contrast.

Edges are cut off or the picture is off-center

  • Use the overscan pattern to identify exactly which edges are lost.
  • Make a modest user-menu geometry adjustment and record the new value.
  • Verify with a game that has edge-aligned text or status information.
  • If correction requires unfamiliar service-menu controls, stop rather than applying values from another model.

The SNES cannot launch the suite

The SNES version requires a compatible flash cartridge. Without one, use a supported platform for which you have a way to run the suite, or obtain the appropriate SNES hardware before treating the missing test as a display fault.

A practical order of operations

  1. Choose the console, game, cable, signal mode, and display path that represent your normal play.
  2. Record every current CRT picture and geometry setting.
  3. Run the same 240p Test Suite Lag Test on the CRT and any comparison display using one simultaneous source.
  4. Set Brightness with PLUGE: hide the side bars, then raise the control until they are just visible.
  5. Set Contrast with the color bars: lower it from clipping until the brightest adjacent blocks separate.
  6. Use color patterns for a neutral visual balance, changing one control at a time.
  7. Use grid, geometry, linearity, and overscan patterns to center the image and preserve important edge content.
  8. Replay a familiar game and check motion, dark scenes, bright scenes, text, and edge information.
  9. Only if measured grayscale or color is a goal, proceed to a colorimeter-and-HCFR workflow with a complete backup of the original settings.

This sequence keeps timing comparisons separate from picture adjustments, preserves a way back to the original configuration, and makes each change attributable to one part of the setup.
