The biggest savings come from controlling how much ink each page uses and how often the printer services itself. Preview every job, print only the required pages, use Draft and grayscale for suitable documents, lighten dense formatting, and compare your actual monthly pages with cartridge yields or an Instant Ink plan before changing how you buy ink.
Start with the pages you do not print
The cheapest page is the one that never reaches the printer. Unwanted test pages, duplicate copies, blank pages caused by document breaks, and an entire web page printed to capture one paragraph all consume paper and ink.
Preview and set a page range
- Open the document’s print preview.
- Check the page thumbnails for blank, duplicate, or advertisement-heavy pages.
- Enter only the pages you need in the Pages or Page range box.
- Set the number of copies before printing, and remove accidental duplicate copies.
- Print one proof page when layout is uncertain, then print the final range after correcting the document.
For browser pages, use the site’s reader or simplified view when available, or copy the needed text into a document before printing. This reduces navigation elements, backgrounds, and images that provide little value on paper.
Use lower-ink settings for routine work
Choose Draft or an equivalent economy mode
Select Draft, Fast Draft, Economy, or a similarly named lower-quality mode for internal text, working copies, and documents that do not need presentation quality. The exact label varies by model and driver. HP recommends draft settings as one way to extend cartridge life.
#1 Best Overall
- Automatic
- These cartridges work with: HP OfficeJet Pro 8020, 8020e, 8025, 8028, 8030e, 8035
- Cartridge yield (approx.): 825 pages black, 315 pages per color
- Up to 2x more prints with Original HP Ink vs. non-Original HP Ink
- 82% of HP ink cartridges are manufactured with recycled plastic
Use the normal or best-quality setting for final reports, photographs, labels, and other jobs where fine detail matters. Draft output can look lighter, show less-solid fills, or have less precise edges, so inspect a sample before committing to a long run.
Select grayscale when color is unnecessary
Choose Grayscale, Black and white, or the equivalent option for text that does not require color. This prevents colored text, links, logos, and minor highlights from consuming color ink.
Do not assume every printer behaves identically. Some HP models can continue in a backup or single-cartridge mode when one cartridge is empty, while others require a particular cartridge or stop until it is replaced. The available behavior is model-specific.

Reduce coverage in the document itself
- Remove large colored backgrounds and full-page image fills unless they are essential.
- Replace oversized bold headings with a smaller, still-readable style.
- Limit decorative borders, banners, and repeated logos.
- Use lighter formatting and less ink-intensive fonts where appearance permits. No font produces a guaranteed percentage saving; the result depends on the text, size, weight, and printer.
- Crop images to the subject instead of printing unused margins.
Coverage density matters more than the number of pages alone. A page of sparse black text can use much less ink than a page filled with dark photographs or solid color, even though both count as one page.
Print in sensible batches
Inkjet printers can run servicing routines after long idle periods. HP says infrequent printing can trigger maintenance that consumes ink. When practical, group routine jobs into a batch rather than repeatedly waking the printer for one or two pages after long gaps.
Batching does not mean printing unnecessary pages. Keep a queue of genuinely needed documents, preview each one, and print them together using the appropriate quality and color settings. If a printer is used only occasionally, expect its maintenance behavior to affect ink consumption and include that in your cost calculations.

Understand why a cartridge runs out sooner than its page rating
Published yield is an estimate
A cartridge’s advertised page yield is a standardized estimate, not a promise that every user will obtain exactly that number. Your result changes with page coverage, the type of documents you print, cleaning and other servicing routines, and how much ink was used during setup.
Two people using the same printer can therefore see different cartridge lifetimes. Someone printing mostly short text pages may exceed the practical result of a user printing photos, dark charts, or pages with large colored areas.
Account for setup-cartridge use
Some new printers include setup cartridges. Ink used while initializing the printer and preparing the system is not available for ordinary documents, so the first cartridges may appear to empty faster than later replacement cartridges. Compare ongoing consumption after setup rather than treating the first cartridge cycle as a reliable forecast.
Separate ink used for printing from ink used for maintenance
Print counters alone do not show every drop consumed. Automatic cleaning, nozzle checks, alignment, and other servicing can use ink. Long idle periods may make such routines more noticeable. Avoid starting repeated cleaning cycles unless print quality actually shows a problem; follow the printer’s on-screen maintenance guidance and stop once the issue is resolved.
Buy replacement cartridges by cost per published page
Package price is an incomplete comparison. A higher-capacity cartridge can cost more at checkout but deliver a lower cost per published page than the standard version. Calculate:
Cost per published page = cartridge price ÷ published page yield.

Use the yield listed for your exact printer and cartridge family. Yields are estimates, so treat the calculation as a consistent comparison rather than a guarantee of your personal result.
Verify the cartridge before ordering
- Read the cartridge number shown in the printer software, on the old cartridge, or in the printer manual.
- Confirm the exact printer model and regional cartridge family; similarly named printers can use different supplies.
- Check whether the listing is an Original HP cartridge or a compatible alternative and understand the seller’s return policy.
- Compare standard and high-capacity versions using cost per published page, not package price alone.
- Check current availability and price immediately before buying. Both change by model, region, seller, and time.
Keep a simple record of cartridge number, purchase price, installation date, and the printer’s page count if available. After several replacements, your own pages-per-cartridge figure is more useful for budgeting than a single unusually high or low result.
Decide whether HP Instant Ink fits your printing pattern
Instant Ink is a subscription system based on pages rather than on buying a new cartridge whenever one empties. HP describes the monthly fee as covering subscription cartridges, ink or toner, delivery, and recycling. The printer reports low supply levels, and HP sends replacement cartridges instead of using a fixed delivery calendar.
HP’s current service materials advertise “Save up to 50% on ink and toner” under HP’s stated comparison methodology. That is HP’s claim, not a universal guarantee. Your result depends on the plan, your actual page count, local cartridge prices, and how consistently you print.
Subscription and cartridge purchasing compared
| Consideration | HP Instant Ink | Buying cartridges as needed |
|---|---|---|
| Billing basis | Monthly page allowance; pages, ink or toner delivery, and recycling are included in the service description. | Pay for each cartridge, then compare its price with its published page yield. |
| Supply delivery | Cartridges are sent when the compatible printer reports low levels, rather than on a fixed monthly schedule. | You select and order a replacement when your current cartridge needs changing. |
| Printer requirement | Compatible HP printer connected to the internet. | Use the cartridge specified for the exact printer model. |
| Cartridge restriction | Subscription cartridges work only with HP Instant Ink. | Choose the standard or high-capacity cartridge options available for your model. |
| Plan flexibility | HP says plans can be changed or cancelled; unused pages can roll over within plan limits. | No subscription or page allowance; spending follows each purchase. |
Use your own pages to test the economics
Count the pages you print in a typical month, including very light months and unusually busy months. Compare that number with the plan’s allowance, any overage charge, and the price of the cartridges you would otherwise buy. A plan that looks attractive during a heavy month may be poor value when you print very little, while rollover within the plan’s limits can help smooth moderate month-to-month variation.
In the United States, HP’s current materials give a $0.99 monthly tier for up to 10 pages as an example. Prices, allowances, and terms can change, so verify the live offer for your country before enrolling.

Check eligibility and delivery timing
Enrollment requires a compatible printer and an internet connection. HP’s FAQ says the initial ink delivery can take 7–10 days. Do not wait until a critical deadline if you are joining for the first time. Because subscription cartridges are restricted to the service, confirm the plan works for your printer before discarding your existing purchasing option.

A short audit prevents both overbuying and underestimating maintenance waste.
- Record the printer’s page count at the start and end of the month, if the model provides one.
- Separate black-and-white pages, color pages, photos, and unusually dense jobs in your notes.
- List every cartridge installed or purchased, including setup cartridges during the first cycle.
- For purchased cartridges, divide each price by its published yield for a comparable cost-per-page figure.
- For Instant Ink, compare actual pages with the plan allowance, rollover limit, and overage terms.
- Investigate a sudden change by checking for dense documents, repeated maintenance, long idle periods, or a cartridge that was not intended for the printer.
Review the result over several replacement cycles. One cartridge can be distorted by a photo-heavy project or an unusually long cleaning routine; a pattern is a better basis for changing settings or plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the printer seems to use ink unusually fast
Check document coverage first
Look for dark backgrounds, photographs, charts with filled areas, and oversized bold text. These jobs can consume substantially more ink per page than ordinary text. Reprint a representative document in Draft and grayscale to see whether the apparent problem is coverage rather than a faulty cartridge.
Check for repeated servicing
If the printer has been idle for long periods or you have repeatedly started cleaning and alignment cycles, maintenance may account for part of the difference. Let the printer complete the recommended routine once, then print a nozzle or quality check. Repeating the cycle without a visible improvement wastes ink.

Check the first-cartridge baseline
Do not use setup-cartridge consumption as the only benchmark for later replacements. Establish a baseline after initialization, then compare similar document mixes across multiple cartridges.
Recycle empty HP cartridges correctly
HP Planet Partners provides free mail-back recycling and lists participating drop-off locations. HP’s guidance names Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot/OfficeMax, and Walmart locations; Walmart participation is listed for ink only, so check the current location list before traveling.
Mail-back and drop-off options
- Use the HP Planet Partners mail-back process when a participating drop-off store is not convenient.
- Instant Ink members commonly receive prepaid return materials for used subscription cartridges.
- Keep empties together until you have the packaging or return quantity required by the program instructions.
HP says Planet Partners operates in more than 60 countries and territories and has recycled more than one billion Original HP ink and toner cartridges. Availability and participating retailers vary by country.

What not to put in curbside recycling
HP states that Original HP cartridges should not go into ordinary curbside recycling. Use the Planet Partners route instead. The program does not accept refilled or remanufactured cartridges, so check the applicable instructions for those products with the seller or local recycling authority.
Arrange a larger collection
For organizations, HP’s guidance identifies pallet pickup for more than 76 toner cartridges or 1,000 ink cartridges. That threshold is for the pallet service, not a requirement for ordinary individual mail-back returns.
A practical decision checklist
- Every job: preview it, remove duplicate or blank pages, and specify the required page range.
- Routine text: use Draft and grayscale when the document’s purpose allows it.
- Dense designs: remove unnecessary backgrounds, oversized type, and decorative fills.
- Printer use: batch necessary jobs when practical, while remembering that batching does not justify printing extra pages.
- Purchases: verify the exact cartridge number and compare price per published page.
- Subscriptions: compare your real monthly pages, including light months, with the current Instant Ink allowance and overage terms.
- Unexpected depletion: check coverage, servicing, setup-cartridge use, and model compatibility before buying another cartridge.
- Empty cartridges: return Original HP supplies through HP Planet Partners or a currently participating location rather than curbside recycling.
These steps address both visible printing costs and the less obvious ink consumed by coverage, maintenance, and setup. The right combination depends on how many pages you print, what those pages contain, and the current prices and terms available for your printer and region.
