You can usually cut household energy use without remodeling by targeting the largest loads first: heating and cooling, air leakage, hot water, lighting, and equipment operation. Start by checking your utility bill or energy-use dashboard, then make reversible thermostat and lighting changes before buying anything. The best sequence depends on your climate, fuel, equipment, dwelling condition, and whether you rent or own.

Start with the loads that matter most

Small standby-power habits can help, but they rarely outrank heating, cooling, water heating, and frequently used appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says heating and cooling typically account for 43% of a home’s utility bill. Water heating represents about 12%, appliances about 15% of household energy consumption, and lighting about 11% of an average household’s energy budget. Those are broad U.S. averages, not a prediction for your home, but they provide a useful order of operations.

Look at the last 12 months of bills if available. Note seasonal spikes, the fuel used for each system, and whether your utility offers hourly or daily usage data. A large winter spike points toward space heating, while a summer spike may indicate air conditioning, electric water heating, or both. If bills do not identify individual uses, list the equipment that runs for long periods: furnace or heat pump, air conditioner, electric resistance heater, water heater, dehumidifier, pool equipment, refrigeration, and laundry appliances.

A practical first-day audit

  1. Record a baseline. Photograph the meter or note the utility’s current reading, and save a recent bill showing the billing period and energy units.
  2. Check schedules. Write down when heating, cooling, water heating, lighting, and major appliances operate on a normal weekday and weekend.
  3. Find obvious waste. Look for rooms conditioned while empty, lights left on, dripping hot-water fixtures, blocked vents, dirty filters, and doors or windows that visibly leak air.
  4. Choose one change per end use. Changing several things at once can save energy, but changing one category at a time makes it easier to learn what works in your home.
  5. Compare like with like. Weather varies. Compare similar months or use degree-day information from your utility rather than judging a change from one unusually warm or cold bill.

DOE and ENERGY STAR provide assessment and weatherization guidance, but an online checklist cannot diagnose every building or combustion-safety issue. Stop and obtain qualified advice if you find unsafe wiring, a damaged flue, suspected carbon-monoxide problems, mold, or insulation near equipment that gets hot.

Adjust heating and cooling before buying equipment

Thermostat operation is often the lowest-disruption way to reduce conditioning energy. DOE’s guidance recommends schedules that reduce conditioning while occupants are asleep or away, while maintaining temperatures that are safe and comfortable for everyone in the home.

Build a schedule that matches occupancy

  1. Identify the hours when the home is normally empty and when occupants sleep.
  2. Program a setback or setup for those periods, then return to the comfort setting before people need the room.
  3. Keep a stable setting when a setback would be unsafe or impractical for infants, older adults, pets, medical equipment, or a heat-sensitive building.
  4. For a heat pump, follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance. Some systems operate most efficiently with modest, steady adjustments rather than a large setback that triggers auxiliary resistance heat.
  5. Review the schedule after a week. If occupants routinely override it, use a smaller change that people will actually keep.

A programmable or connected thermostat is optional. A manual adjustment can deliver the same behavioral change when someone remembers to make it. ENERGY STAR’s smart-home guidance describes controls and connected devices as tools, not substitutes for an appropriate schedule or correctly operating equipment.

Maintain the system you already have

  • Replace or clean HVAC filters at the interval specified for your system and filter type. A clogged filter can restrict airflow and make equipment work harder.
  • Keep supply and return grilles open and unobstructed. Do not close a large number of registers unless the system designer or a qualified technician says it is acceptable.
  • Keep outdoor heat-pump or air-conditioner coils clear of leaves and other obstructions, following the manufacturer’s service instructions.
  • Have ducts inspected when rooms are consistently too hot or cold, ducts are in an unconditioned space, or you can see disconnected or damaged sections. Sealing ducts is different from sealing window and door gaps.
  • Do not disable required ventilation. If a health or indoor-air-quality professional has specified continuous fan operation, follow that instruction instead of changing the fan schedule for energy savings.

DOE’s efficient-heating-and-cooling guidance treats maintenance, appropriate thermostat settings, insulation, and air sealing as a combined strategy. It describes a possible 20% to 50% reduction in heating and cooling energy when proper maintenance and upgrades are combined with insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings. That range is not the expected result of a single filter change or thermostat adjustment.

Use the building to reduce heat gain and loss

  • Close blinds or curtains during strong summer sun, especially on windows facing the sun for much of the day.
  • Open coverings for useful winter sun when doing so does not create glare or overheating.
  • Use daylight where practical, but turn off electric lights in unoccupied rooms.
  • Do not block a radiator, heat pump indoor unit, or return grille with furniture or curtains.

Seal accessible drafts without creating hazards

Air leakage makes rooms uncomfortable and forces heating or cooling equipment to condition air that quickly escapes. ENERGY STAR’s DIY sealing and insulating guide covers locating hidden attic and basement leaks, evaluating attic insulation, and working safely. Its plain-language summary is: “Sealing and Insulating are often the most cost-effective ways to make a home more comfortable and energy efficient — and you can do it yourself with guidance from ENERGY STAR.”

Use the right material for the right joint

Location or problem Appropriate approach Renter practicality Important limitation
Stationary crack around a trim joint or fixed frame Suitable interior caulk, applied to a clean, dry surface Ask permission if the finish could be affected Caulk is not a substitute for repairing structural damage or a leaking pipe
Gap around a door or operable window that moves Removable or replaceable weatherstripping that matches the joint Often reversible when installed without permanent alteration Do not prevent required egress or make a window unsafe to open
Large attic, basement, or crawl-space leakage Follow the ENERGY STAR DIY guide or use a qualified weatherization professional Usually requires owner approval Combustion air, moisture, electrical clearances, and insulation safety must be checked
Required vents, combustion-air openings, or mechanical ventilation Leave open and obtain professional advice Do not alter Blocking an opening can create carbon-monoxide, moisture, or indoor-air-quality hazards

A low-disruption draft check

  1. Close exterior doors and windows and turn off exhaust fans temporarily.
  2. On a cold or windy day, feel for moving air around movable joints, or use a thin strip of tissue. Do not use an open flame to find leaks.
  3. Mark locations that are safe to address and distinguish a stationary crack from a moving joint.
  4. Clean and dry the surface, then apply compatible caulk or weatherstripping according to the product instructions.
  5. Open and close the door or window several times. Confirm that locks, drainage paths, and emergency exits still work.

Renters can often use removable weatherstripping, a properly fitted door sweep where allowed, curtains, and thermostat changes. DOE’s renter guidance specifically identifies caulk for some fixed gaps and weatherstripping around movable window and door joints. Do not drill, remove trim, disturb insulation, or seal a vent in a rental without the owner’s permission.

When insulation is worth considering

Attic insulation and air sealing can produce meaningful savings when a home has accessible, poorly insulated areas, but the work is more than a cosmetic upgrade. ENERGY STAR’s 2024 EPA estimate says homeowners can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs, or 11% on total energy costs, by air sealing and adding insulation in specified parts of the home. The estimate applies to the scope described by that source and to U.S. homes; it is not a guaranteed result for every attic or wall.

Before adding insulation, identify moisture problems, recessed-light clearances, wiring concerns, and combustion equipment. Follow local requirements and the material manufacturer’s instructions. A weatherization program may include health and safety checks precisely because sealing and insulating can change airflow and moisture conditions.

Replace the most-used lights with efficient bulbs

Lighting is comparatively easy to change because bulbs can be replaced one fixture at a time. DOE says newer lighting technologies can reduce home lighting energy use by 50% to 75%. Its renter guidance estimates that an average household can save more than $200 per year by using LED lighting; actual savings depend on bulb wattage, hours of use, electricity prices, and how many fixtures are changed.

Prioritize rather than replacing everything

  1. List fixtures used for several hours each day: kitchen, living room, exterior security, work area, and frequently used bathrooms.
  2. Read the fixture label and the existing bulb before buying. Match the base, voltage, shape, brightness, color appearance, and whether the fixture is enclosed or dimmable.
  3. Choose a bulb with the required compatibility and a recognized efficiency certification where available.
  4. Replace the highest-use bulbs first, then compare the next bill or meter reading before buying more.
  5. Turn lights off in empty rooms, while leaving safety or security lighting on when it serves a real purpose.

LEDs are not automatically suitable for every fixture. An enclosed fixture, dimmer, motion sensor, or low-voltage transformer may require a specifically compatible bulb. If a bulb flickers, overheats, or trips a circuit, switch it off and resolve the compatibility problem rather than continuing to use it.

Reduce hot-water energy safely

Water heating typically accounts for about 12% of a utility bill, according to DOE. You can reduce its load without replacing the heater by using less hot water, addressing losses in distribution, and checking settings carefully.

Start with use and leaks

  • Shorten showers where acceptable and avoid running hot water while shaving, brushing teeth, or waiting for a sink task that does not require it.
  • Repair dripping hot-water faucets and shower valves; a continuous leak wastes water and the energy used to heat it.
  • Run dishwashers and clothes washers with full loads when the schedule and hygiene requirements allow.
  • Use cold or warm wash settings for laundry when they clean adequately, and use the appliance’s energy-saving cycle if it meets the load’s needs.
  • Insulate accessible hot-water pipes when the water-heater manual and local safety guidance permit it, keeping insulation away from flues, burners, controls, and required clearances.

Check the temperature setting with care

DOE advises considering an appropriate water-heater temperature setting, but the correct choice depends on the equipment, household health needs, scalding risk, and microbial-control requirements. Consult the water-heater manual or a qualified professional before changing the setting. Do not make a change that could expose children, older adults, or anyone with reduced sensitivity to burns, and do not compromise a building’s required hot-water safety practice.

Decide when replacement makes sense

Replace a water heater or appliance when it is failing, unsafe, or due for a planned upgrade—not solely to chase a headline savings number. Compare certified efficiency, capacity, fuel, installation requirements, operating cost, service life, and lifecycle cost. A more efficient model can be worthwhile when replacement is already necessary, but premature disposal shifts energy and material impacts into a purchase that may not pay back quickly.

Handle appliances and standby use proportionally

DOE attributes about 15% of household energy consumption to appliances. Focus first on equipment that heats, cools, pumps, or runs for many hours: refrigerators and freezers, electric cooking equipment, clothes dryers, dehumidifiers, aquarium or pool pumps, and entertainment systems used continuously.

Low-cost operating changes

  • Clean refrigerator coils or ventilation areas only as the manual permits, and keep door seals clean and intact.
  • Use the smallest suitable cooking appliance and cover pots to shorten heating time.
  • Air-dry clothes when practical, or clean the dryer’s lint filter before every load and use a moisture-sensing cycle if available.
  • Unplug or switch off rarely used chargers and entertainment equipment when convenient. This is a secondary measure after conditioning and hot water.
  • Do not unplug medical devices, networking equipment required for safety, or systems whose restart procedure is not understood.

When an appliance needs replacement, compare its certified energy-use information and expected operating cost. Do not buy a new appliance solely because it is newer if the existing unit works safely and has modest use.

Choose measures by cost, disruption, and control

Measure Upfront cost End use affected DIY difficulty and disruption Renter permission Reversibility and safety
Thermostat schedule None with an existing thermostat Heating and cooling Low; no physical change Usually no, unless controls are restricted Highly reversible; protect comfort and health
Filter maintenance Cost of the specified filter Heating and cooling airflow Low if the filter is accessible Usually no Reversible; use the correct size and rating
Weatherstripping Low Infiltration at moving joints Low to moderate Often ask first Reversible if removable; preserve egress and drainage
Caulk at fixed gaps Low Infiltration at stationary cracks Low to moderate Ask before altering finishes Less reversible; never seal required ventilation
LED bulbs Low per fixture Lighting Low Usually no Reversible; verify dimmer and fixture compatibility
Hot-water use reduction None Water heating Low Usually no Reversible; avoid unsafe temperature changes
Attic air sealing and insulation Moderate to high Heating and cooling Moderate to high Owner or manager approval May affect moisture and combustion safety; professional review may be needed

This comparison is a decision aid, not a promise of payback. A measure with no purchase cost can save less than a properly executed repair, while a more expensive project can be justified by comfort, durability, or a failing component as well as energy use.

Options for renters and homeowners

If you rent

  • Begin with thermostat schedules, filter reporting, curtains or blinds, efficient bulbs, hot-water habits, and appliance operation.
  • Ask the landlord or manager to repair failed weatherstripping, leaking faucets, blocked vents, damaged ductwork, or inadequate insulation.
  • Use removable products where permitted, and document the original condition before installation.
  • Never alter combustion equipment, electrical circuits, windows needed for emergency exit, or mechanical ventilation without written approval and qualified help.

If you own

  • Use the utility bill and a whole-house assessment to decide whether air sealing, duct work, insulation, equipment maintenance, or water heating deserves priority.
  • Obtain more than a product quote when work affects insulation, combustion appliances, moisture, or ventilation; ask what health and safety checks are included.
  • Coordinate envelope work with equipment evaluation. A tighter home may require attention to ventilation and combustion safety.
  • Schedule replacement appliances and HVAC equipment at the end of useful life, comparing certified efficiency and lifecycle cost.

Rebates, weatherization, and assistance

The DOE Home Energy Rebates Program describes HOMES and HEEHR pathways and categories of upgrades, while DOE’s whole-house weatherization guidance covers measures and health and safety checks. Eligibility, funding, income rules, application steps, and availability vary by state, utility, locality, and program period. Check your state energy office, utility, and local weatherization provider before assuming a rebate exists or counting it in a budget.

Ask a program administrator whether an assessment is required before work, which contractors are eligible, what documentation is needed, and whether the incentive is a rebate, a point-of-sale discount, or income-qualified assistance. Keep invoices, model numbers, permits, and before-and-after information when the program requests them. A rebate should improve the economics of a suitable measure, not determine whether you seal an unsafe location or replace working equipment prematurely.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Starting with the smallest load

Unplugging a few chargers is easy, but it may not matter as much as a thermostat schedule, a failed door seal, or a poorly maintained heating system. Correct the largest measurable load first.

Using caulk on a moving joint

Caulk is intended for stationary cracks. Use compatible weatherstripping around a moving window or door, and confirm that the opening still operates safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sealing a required opening

Combustion-air openings and mechanical ventilation are not drafts to eliminate casually. Leave them open and obtain qualified advice.

Changing a water-heater setting without checking risk

A lower setting can reduce energy use but can create health or scalding concerns depending on the system and household. Follow the manual and professional guidance.

Assuming a savings percentage is guaranteed

The DOE figures describe typical shares or possible combined-measure results. The ENERGY STAR and EPA 2024 estimate applies to a specified U.S. air-sealing and insulation scope. Your climate, fuel, rates, building, equipment, and behavior determine the actual result.

Ignoring indoor air quality

Do not disable required ventilation or leave a home inadequately ventilated after sealing. If occupants experience persistent condensation, odors, combustion symptoms, or unusual humidity, stop the work and seek qualified evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable 30-day plan

  1. Days 1–2: measure. Save a bill, inspect the utility dashboard, list major equipment, and record thermostat and hot-water schedules.
  2. Days 3–7: operate better. Set an occupancy-based thermostat schedule, clean or replace the approved filter, turn off unnecessary lights, and reduce avoidable hot-water use.
  3. Week 2: fix reversible leaks. Inspect doors and operable windows, install compatible weatherstripping where allowed, and use daylight and window coverings strategically.
  4. Week 3: target lighting and appliances. Replace bulbs in the most-used compatible fixtures, improve dryer and cooking practices, and address refrigerator ventilation or seals.
  5. Week 4: plan permanent work. If bills or comfort problems point to the envelope, ducts, water heater, or HVAC equipment, request an assessment and investigate local assistance before committing to a project.
  6. After 30 days: review. Compare usage with a weather-adjusted or similar-period baseline, keep measures that occupants follow, and revise those that create discomfort or safety concerns.
