Wind noise and handling noise have different causes, so they need different fixes. Use a correctly fitted windshield or blimp to block airflow, isolate the microphone in a compatible suspension mount, keep the stand and cable still, and apply a low-cut filter only for residual low-frequency rumble. Before buying anything, check the accessories supplied with your exact microphone: RØDE’s NT-SF1 ambisonic kit, for example, includes a custom suspension shockmount, a blimp-style windshield and a furry wind cover.
Identify which noise you are hearing
Start by deciding whether the unwanted sound is airborne wind or mechanical vibration. The distinction matters because a windshield cannot stop vibration from a loose cable or hand, and a shockmount cannot prevent air from buffeting the microphone capsules.
Wind noise: airflow rumble
Wind noise usually sounds like broadband rushing, buffeting or deep rumble that changes as air moves across the microphone. It can occur outdoors even when the location does not feel especially windy to you; the capsules are exposed to moving air and can react to gusts, movement and turbulence around the microphone body.

Handling noise follows contact or movement. Touching the microphone, rotating a stand, lifting a boom, brushing a cable or allowing a support to tap a surface can send vibration into the capsules. It often appears as thumps, scrapes or low-frequency bumps rather than a continuous rush.

Both at once
Outdoor operators commonly have both problems: wind reaches the capsules while movement travels through a grip, stand or cable. Treat each path separately and make one change at a time so you can tell which fix worked.
Block wind with protection matched to the microphone
For outdoor recording, a properly fitted windshield is the first response to airflow noise. RØDE describes high-quality windshields as generally essential for avoiding unwanted rumble or noise outside. The protection must fit the microphone’s shape and capsule arrangement; a cover that fits a cylindrical shotgun microphone may not fit a spatial or ambisonic array.
Use the lightest protection that suits the conditions
A foam windshield can be useful in light wind, but foam and heavy-duty systems are not interchangeable across models. In its guidance for the VideoMic GO II, RØDE describes the supplied foam windshield as suitable for light wind and recommends the WS12 for stronger wind. That advice is specific to the VideoMic GO II, so do not assume the WS12 or any other model-specific cover fits a spatial microphone.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor stronger or changing outdoor wind, use a compatible furry cover, blimp-style windshield or complete basket system recommended for your microphone. A blimp creates a larger air space around the microphone, while a furry outer layer disrupts turbulent airflow. The correct combination depends on the microphone’s dimensions, connector position and capsule openings.
Fit the cover securely
- Inspect the microphone and wind accessory for dust, loose fibers, damaged elastic or gaps.
- Install the windshield exactly as the manufacturer shows, making sure it covers every exposed capsule opening without pressing on the array.
- Check that the cover cannot slide, rattle or touch the microphone during movement.
- Make a short test recording while facing the expected wind direction, then listen with headphones before the main take.
Do not treat a furry cover as universal. Spatial microphones may have several capsules arranged around the body, and an opening that is harmless on one model can leave another capsule exposed. Confirm the accessory’s stated compatibility and inspect the package before ordering a replacement.

Check what came in the box
Some spatial microphone kits already include the protection you need. RØDE lists the NT-SF1 ambisonic microphone kit with a custom suspension shockmount, a blimp-style windshield and a furry wind cover. The kit is designed for the microphone’s A-format recording system, so owners should check that package before purchasing a separate mount or wind system.
Isolate the microphone from handling and support vibration
Handling noise is mechanical vibration. The goal is to interrupt the path from your hand, stand, boom or cable to the microphone body while keeping the microphone securely aimed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a compatible suspension shockmount
A suspension mount holds the microphone in elastic or otherwise isolated supports so vibration is less readily transferred from the handle or support. Fit is model-specific: RØDE describes the PG2-R as intended for shotgun microphones, while the NT-SF1 kit includes its own custom suspension shockmount. Do not assume a shotgun mount will safely hold an arbitrary ambisonic microphone.
- Verify the mount’s supported microphone diameter, length and weight.
- Seat the microphone evenly in the suspension cradle; it should not touch the frame.
- Tighten only the retention hardware specified by the manufacturer. Over-tightening can defeat the isolation or deform the microphone body.
- Move the handle gently and listen for rattles before recording.
Keep your hands and support still
When possible, place the microphone on a stable stand or boom and avoid touching it during the take. If you must handhold it, grip the handle rather than the microphone body, use slow deliberate movements and avoid shifting your fingers. A suspension mount reduces transmitted vibration but cannot make abrupt movement silent.
Control cable movement
A cable can tug on the microphone or knock against the stand. Leave a small service loop near the microphone, secure the cable to the handle or boom below the isolated mount, and keep the remaining slack from dragging across a table or floor. Do not clamp the cable so tightly that movement is transferred directly into the microphone.

Prevent contact with other objects
Check for boom-arm joints, stand collars, clips, clothing, bags and nearby surfaces that can touch the microphone or its mount. A soft case or loose strap brushing the windshield can create noise even when the capsules themselves are isolated.

Use a low-cut filter only for residual rumble
A low-cut, or high-pass, filter reduces energy below a selected frequency. It can help with low-frequency rumble after the physical setup is under control, but it is a secondary tool rather than a wind barrier. Filtering cannot stop air from reaching the capsules and cannot prevent a thump from being recorded in the first place.
Zoom says the H5’s low-cut filter helps eliminate wind noise and other low-frequency rumble. That statement describes the H5 recorder; it is not a universal performance claim for every recorder, microphone or spatial recording chain.
When a low-cut filter is appropriate
- Use it when the wanted sound does not depend on very low frequencies and the remaining problem is steady rumble.
- Record a short comparison with the filter off and on, then choose the setting that preserves the natural low end of the scene.
- Keep the filter off when deep ambience, bass instruments or low environmental events are essential to the spatial recording.
Apply the filter at the recorder or microphone only when you know where it sits in the signal path. If you record an ambisonic signal for later decoding, confirm that the filter affects all channels consistently; an inconsistent setting can alter the spatial balance.
A practical setup procedure
Use this sequence before every location recording. It separates physical causes from electronic processing and gives you a repeatable check.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Inspect the microphone and kit. Identify the exact model, capsule layout, connector and supplied accessories. Read the manual for the approved windshield and suspension mount.
- Choose the wind protection. Use the supplied foam for conditions the manufacturer classifies as light wind. For stronger outdoor wind, install the compatible furry cover, blimp or basket system rather than stacking improvised materials over the capsules.
- Install the suspension mount. Confirm that the mount is designed for your microphone, seat the microphone centrally and check for contact with the frame.
- Secure the cable. Add a small loop near the microphone, fasten the cable below the isolated section and route the remaining length away from feet, stands and moving surfaces.
- Choose a quiet position. Place the microphone near the wanted sound and away from noisy elements such as traffic, vents, generators, flapping fabric and reflective hard surfaces. RØDE’s noise-isolation guidance also emphasizes positioning as a first-line control.
- Stabilize the support. Spread stand legs fully, lock joints and keep the boom from contacting walls, tables or railings. For a handheld take, hold the isolated handle with both hands only if that improves stability without touching the microphone.
- Monitor with headphones. Record at least 20 seconds while stationary, then repeat while moving the support as you will during the take. Listen for rushing wind, cable bumps, grip noise and stand vibration.
- Change one variable. If the test has rushing noise, improve the windshield. If it has thumps that follow movement, improve isolation and cable routing. If only a steady low rumble remains, test a low-cut filter.
- Record a final safety test. Include the actual orientation, wind direction and movement planned for the scene. A quiet test in a sheltered position does not prove that the setup will remain quiet after you move outdoors.
Match the remedy to the symptom
| Observed sound | Likely cause | First remedy | Secondary option | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Continuous rushing or buffeting that changes with gusts | Airflow at the capsules | Fit the manufacturer-approved foam, furry cover or blimp | Low-cut filter for remaining rumble | Filtering cannot replace a physical windshield |
| Thump when the handle, stand or boom moves | Mechanical vibration | Use the compatible suspension shockmount and stabilize the support | Change grip and movement technique | A mount intended for another microphone may not fit or isolate correctly |
| Scrape or knock that occurs when the cable moves | Cable tug or cable contact | Leave a service loop and secure slack below the isolated mount | Re-route the cable away from surfaces | A filter will not remove distinct cable impacts reliably |
| Deep, steady rumble indoors or outdoors with little audible wind | Low-frequency vibration or environmental noise | Move away from the source and improve physical isolation | Test a low-cut filter | Filtering can remove wanted low-frequency ambience |
| Noise from only one direction or one exposed capsule | Incomplete or poorly fitted cover | Re-seat the compatible windshield and inspect for gaps | Replace damaged or incorrect protection | Generic covers may not protect a spatial array evenly |
Choosing accessories without creating a new problem
Windshield checklist
- Confirm the exact microphone model and whether the accessory is approved for its capsule arrangement.
- Match the protection level to the conditions: foam for the manufacturer’s light-wind use case, and a more substantial furry or blimp system for stronger wind.
- Check that the cover leaves connectors, controls and mounting points accessible as required.
- Ensure the material does not shed fibers into capsule openings and does not rub against the microphone during movement.
Shockmount checklist
- Check supported diameter, length, weight and mounting thread.
- Prefer the custom mount supplied for the microphone when one is included.
- Inspect elastic bands or suspension elements for slack, cracks and uneven tension.
- Verify that the microphone remains centered and cannot touch the mount when the rig is moved.
Recorder checklist
A recorder with shock-mounted microphones and a low-cut filter can be useful when building or changing a recorder-based setup. Zoom lists both features for the H5. That does not mean replacing an existing spatial microphone is necessary; first determine whether the problem is wind, vibration, placement or the recorder’s own handling.

Using a foam cover in strong wind
Foam may be adequate for light wind on a model that supports it, but stronger gusts can overwhelm it. Move to the manufacturer’s recommended furry or blimp protection and verify the fit around every capsule.
Buying a shockmount by appearance
Two mounts can look similar while supporting different microphone diameters or lengths. A mount described for a shotgun microphone, such as the PG2-R, should not be presented as a universal ambisonic solution. Use the custom mount supplied with the spatial microphone when available.
Relying on a low-cut filter to cure wind
A filter may reduce the lowest part of a rumble, but it cannot stop turbulence, capsule overload or mechanical impacts. Correct the physical setup first, then use filtering for what remains.
Letting the cable hang from the microphone
A dangling cable adds leverage and can transmit every movement into the mount. Secure it below the isolated section and keep a controlled loop near the microphone.

Testing only in a sheltered room
Wind protection must be tested in the airflow and orientation of the actual recording. Include movement, turning and cable handling in the test so failures appear before the take.
What can and cannot be quantified
The official product guidance cited here explains the purpose and intended use of windshields, suspension mounts and low-cut filters, but it does not provide a comparable percentage reduction for the different remedies. Treat claims such as “reduces handling noise” as design-purpose descriptions, not as a guaranteed reduction figure. Your microphone, mount, wind direction, support and recording level determine the result.
For a spatial recording, preserving the relationship among channels is as important as making one channel quiet. Use accessories designed for the complete array, monitor all channels when possible and avoid processing that changes one channel differently from the others.
A reliable decision order
When noise appears, work from the source outward: block air with a compatible windshield; interrupt vibration with the correct suspension mount; stop cable and support movement; improve microphone placement; then consider a low-cut filter for residual rumble. This order protects the recording before any irreversible filtering and prevents you from buying equipment that addresses the wrong problem.
