Reduce fingerprints with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and reduce screen glare by changing the reader’s angle and the position of nearby light. Turn the e-reader off and unplug it first, remove dust or grit before wiping, and follow the exact care instructions for your model before using any moisture or applying a screen film.
The metal casing and the display need different treatment. A cloth can remove skin oils from the case and screen, but it cannot fix a reflection caused by a lamp, window, or overhead light. A matte protector may help in some setups, yet it is a model-specific, anecdotal option with a possible sharpness trade-off rather than a guaranteed solution.
Why fingerprints and glare require different fixes
Fingerprints are deposits of skin oil, sweat, and dust on a surface. They usually appear as cloudy smears or visible touch marks on the metal shell, bezel, or glass. Gentle wiping is the appropriate response.

Do not assume that a metal body means every part of the device has the same finish. The casing, bezel, and display cover may have different coatings, and the title does not identify a particular model. Manufacturer instructions for that exact reader take precedence over generic cleaning advice.
Prepare the reader before cleaning
- Identify the exact model. Find the model name or number in Settings, on the original packaging, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Use that model’s care instructions, especially if you are considering liquid or a screen protector.
- Power down and disconnect it. Turn the reader off and unplug any charging cable. This prevents accidental input while you wipe and keeps liquid away from an energized port.
- Choose a suitable cloth. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth is suitable only when it is soft, clean, and free of grit, loose threads, fabric softener residue, or abrasive particles.
- Inspect for grit. Hold the display under a diffuse light and look for sand, crumbs, or other particles. Loose dust should be removed before the cloth touches the surface; rubbing grit across a display or finish can cause scratches.
- Clear the work area. Move the reader away from food, loose papers, and dusty surfaces. Keep liquids in a separate location so the device is not accidentally splashed.
Clean a metal e-reader safely, step by step
1. Remove loose dust without rubbing
Use the cloth’s clean side to lift away visible dust, or gently tip the reader so particles fall off. Do not press a grain of sand into the display. Avoid paper towels, tissues, clothing, and textured cleaning pads; they can shed fibers or carry particles that mark a coating.
2. Wipe the display with light pressure
Wipe in one direction with a soft, lint-free cloth and only light pressure. Rakuten Kobo’s official cleaning instruction says: “Use a soft lint-free cloth and gently wipe the screen. Do not apply excessive pressure to the screen.” That warning is particularly important for E Ink panels, which should not be treated like a hard glass monitor.
Make overlapping passes rather than scrubbing a stubborn spot. If the mark does not lift, stop and reassess instead of increasing force. A persistent mark may be on a removable cover, under a protector, or part of the screen’s surface treatment.
3. Dampen the cloth only when your model permits it
Kobo’s instructions allow its cloth to be slightly dampened with water. This is model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a universal permission for every metal e-reader. If your own manual does not allow moisture, use a dry cloth or contact the manufacturer.

When water is permitted, the cloth should be barely damp, never wet enough to drip. Do not spray the screen or casing. Keep moisture away from charging ports, buttons, speaker openings, seams, and slots. Wipe with the damp portion, then immediately use a dry section to remove remaining moisture.
4. Clean the metal casing separately
Use a fresh, dry section of the cloth on the back, edges, and bezel. Follow the existing direction of any visible texture rather than making vigorous circular motions. This minimizes the chance of spreading oil and makes it easier to see which areas still need attention.
For a fingerprint at an edge or around a button, fold the cloth so you can control the contact area. Do not push the cloth into openings. If a case or cover is installed, remove it and clean the accessory according to its own material instructions; trapped dust can transfer back to the reader.
5. Let the device dry before reconnecting it
Leave the reader open to air until the surface is completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, or compressed air aimed at the device. Once dry, inspect the display at several angles. A remaining bright patch may be reflected light rather than residue.
What to avoid on the finish and display
- Harsh chemicals: Do not assume glass cleaner, alcohol, ammonia, disinfectant, or solvent is safe for an unidentified coating. Kobo specifically warns against harsh chemicals.
- Abrasives: Melamine sponges, scouring pads, polishing compounds, and abrasive cloths can alter a coating or leave visible scratches.
- Excess water: Never soak the cloth or pour liquid onto the reader. Spraying near the device can send droplets into openings.
- Pressure: Hard rubbing can damage a display or spread a mark over a larger area. More force is not a substitute for removing grit first.
- Unverified home remedies: Oils, waxes, metal polish, and household cleaning mixtures may change the feel or reflectivity of the casing and can migrate to the screen.
- Cleaning while charging: Disconnect the cable before wiping, and keep the port dry.
These precautions are conservative because the exact metal alloy, paint, anodizing, topcoat, and screen cover are not identified. If the manufacturer gives a narrower rule, follow it.

How to remove fingerprints without creating new smears
Use a two-cloth routine
Reserve one cloth for the display and another for the casing. A cloth that has picked up oil from the back can redistribute it onto the screen. Keep the cloths in a clean, closed bag between uses and wash them without fabric softener if the care label permits.
Clean high-touch areas first
Wipe the grip zones, lower bezel, power-button area, and corners before making a final pass over the broad back panel. This prevents your hands from recontaminating an area while you handle the reader. Hold the device by an edge that you have not yet cleaned, then finish that edge last.
Check under neutral light
Strong directional light can make a clean surface look streaky. Inspect the casing under diffuse room light, then tilt it gently. If the appearance changes dramatically with the angle, you may be seeing reflection rather than a fingerprint. Do not keep wiping in response to a reflection.
How to reduce glare while reading
Start with the screen angle
Tilt the reader a few degrees at a time until the bright reflection moves out of your line of sight. Small changes in pitch or rotation can matter more than increasing brightness. If you use a stand, adjust the stand rather than pressing on the display.
Move the light source, not just the reader
Place a lamp to the side or behind your shoulder so its reflection does not point toward your eyes. A window can produce the same problem during daylight; rotate your seat or reader so the window is not directly in front of the display. Overhead fixtures may require a lower reading angle or a different seat.

Separate reflection from front-light brightness
If the whole page looks evenly bright, lower the front-light setting according to the reader’s controls. If only a lamp, window, or bright shape is visible, it is reflected glare and positioning is the better first adjustment. Changing brightness cannot remove a reflected object.
Understand what E Ink claims do and do not mean
Kobo describes its E Ink screen as offering a “glare-free, print-on-paper reading experience” and says its front light diffuses illumination across the page. That is Kobo’s description of its technology; it is not proof that every e-reader, every cover glass, or every room is free of reflections. A clean screen and sensible positioning remain useful even on an E Ink model.
Should you install a matte screen protector?
A matte or anti-glare film is an optional experiment after cleaning and repositioning have failed. It adds a diffusing surface that may make reflections less distinct, but the result depends on the exact display, film texture, installation quality, and lighting in your room.

One reader post reports reduced glare after using a matte film, but that anecdote does not establish compatibility, typical results, durability, or the effect on text sharpness. Treat the report as a reason to test cautiously, not as a performance guarantee.
Check these points before buying a film
- Confirm the exact model, generation, screen size, and camera or sensor cut-outs, if any.
- Read the e-reader manufacturer’s warranty and accessory guidance before covering the display.
- Check whether the film is removable and whether adhesive residue is expected.
- Plan installation in a clean, low-dust room. Dust trapped underneath is difficult to remove without lifting the film.
- Keep the packaging until you have checked text clarity, touch response, front-light uniformity, and fit.
Install only after you are satisfied that the glare is coming from the display surface rather than a dirty cover or a poorly positioned lamp. If the film makes small text look grainy, remove it and return to positioning changes.

A practical decision path
- Fingerprints only: Power down, remove grit, and wipe gently with a clean lint-free cloth. Use slightly dampened cloth material only if the model’s instructions allow water.
- Reflection only: Keep the screen clean, then change the reader’s tilt, rotation, seat, or light position.
- Both problems: Complete the cleaning sequence first, because residue can exaggerate scattered reflections. Then adjust the lighting.
- Glare remains in several rooms: Confirm the model’s display and cover instructions, then consider a correctly fitted matte film as a reversible trial.
- New scratches, cloudy patches, or coating changes: Stop cleaning, do not apply more products, document the condition, and contact the manufacturer or seller for model-specific advice.
Troubleshooting common results
The screen looks streaky after wiping
Use a dry, clean section of the cloth with very light passes. Check whether the cloth contains detergent or fabric-softener residue. If streaks appear only under a lamp, change the lamp angle before wiping again.
A fingerprint will not come off
Verify that the mark is not under a screen film or case lip. Recheck the model’s instructions for permitted moisture; if water is allowed, use a barely damp cloth followed by a dry pass. Do not escalate to solvent or abrasive cleaner without explicit manufacturer approval.
Glare appears as a bright band after installing a film
Check for bubbles, lifting edges, or dust under the film. Compare the display at the same angle with and without the reader’s front light. If text clarity or lighting uniformity is worse, remove the film according to its instructions rather than pressing harder on the screen.

Clean the reader’s cover and the cloth storage area. Hand lotion, sunscreen, and food residue can transfer back quickly. Wash or replace the cloth if it no longer lifts oil cleanly.
Model-specific limits you should verify
The exact reader in this topic is not named, so no universal statement about its metal coating, water tolerance, screen cover, or protector fit is justified. An official guide index lists a “Kindle (Aluminum – 2026 Release),” but that listing does not establish that it is the device you own and does not provide finish-specific cleaning or protector instructions.
Before using moisture or adhesive, look for the model’s own maintenance page and warranty terms. Confirm whether the manufacturer permits water on the cloth, whether a protector is approved, and whether the display has a factory-applied layer that should not be removed.
