Reduce glare before buying anything: place the monitor at a right angle to windows and bright fixtures, soften direct light with blinds or diffusion, and set screen brightness to match the room. Then position the display directly in front of you, roughly 20–40 inches away (about 50–100 cm), with its top at or below eye level. Use regular distance-viewing breaks, blink deliberately, and consider a matte filter only if reflections remain. Persistent redness, blurring, watering, light sensitivity, or pain warrants an eye-care appointment.

Start with a reflection check

Glare is usually a lighting and layout problem rather than a missing accessory. Reflections from a window, ceiling fitting, or desk lamp reduce the apparent contrast of text and force you to squint or lean. Make changes while seated in your normal working position, because a screen that looks clear when you stand may reflect light when you sit.

  1. Turn off the monitor or display a dark screen so reflections are easy to see.
  2. Look for bright rectangles, points, or streaks on the panel. Identify whether each comes from a window, overhead fitting, task lamp, or another bright surface behind you.
  3. Move the monitor so its face is at right angles to the window or other dominant light source. This changes the reflection angle without requiring a darker room.
  4. Close, tilt, or partially lower existing blinds or curtains when sunlight strikes the panel. Reduce the direct beam, but keep enough general room light to avoid a very bright screen in an otherwise dark room.
  5. Redirect a desk lamp so it lights paper or the keyboard from the side. Its bulb should not shine into your eyes or appear in the screen.
  6. Wipe dust and fingerprints from the panel with the display maker’s recommended method. A hazy surface scatters light and can make an otherwise manageable reflection look worse.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends placing screens at right angles to windows and other light sources, using blinds or drapes, and favoring diffuse, well-distributed lighting. Shielded or indirect fixtures are preferable to exposed bulbs aimed toward the workstation.

Match the lighting to the source of glare

What you see Likely source First change What to avoid
A bright window shape on the display Window behind or beside you Rotate the monitor until the panel is perpendicular to the window; adjust blinds or curtains to block direct sun. Putting the screen directly in front of a bright window or facing the window without controlling daylight.
Small bright spots or bands Ceiling fixture or bare bulb Change the screen angle or shield the fixture; use indirect or diffused light. Tilting the monitor upward into an overhead reflection.
A sharp reflection from one side Desk or task lamp Move the lamp to the side and aim it at the work surface, not the user’s eyes or screen. Placing the lamp behind the monitor or directly opposite a glossy panel.
The screen feels glaring even without a distinct reflection Screen much brighter than the room Lower display brightness or add soft ambient light so the screen is not the only bright object. Working in a dark room with a very bright display.

Do not assume that making the room as dark as possible is best. A comfortable setup has enough diffuse ambient light for the keyboard, notes, and surrounding area, without a lamp or window producing a high-contrast reflection.

Set monitor distance, height, and angle

Choose a readable distance

OSHA gives a general preferred viewing range of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm). Its quick tip is at least 20 inches. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) describes about 25 inches, or arm’s length, as a practical rule of thumb. These are working ranges, not a prescription that fits every person, monitor, or font size.

Place the monitor directly in front of you. Start at roughly arm’s length and move it only far enough that ordinary text is clear without leaning forward or narrowing your eyes. If text is too small, increase the text or interface size instead of moving the panel close to your face. A larger font preserves a comfortable distance and can reduce squinting.

Set eye height and gaze

Keep the top edge of the screen at or below eye level so your natural gaze falls slightly downward. This position generally lets the eyelids cover more of the eye surface and avoids holding the neck in an extended position. Adjust the chair and monitor stand together; raising the screen while leaving the chair low can create a new neck and shoulder problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the angle from your real posture

Use the height and tilt that work while you are typing, not while you are inspecting the desk. A small upward tilt may send an overhead reflection toward your eyes, while a steep downward tilt can distort the viewing angle or make the lower part of the panel harder to read. After every adjustment, sit normally and check the entire screen for reflections.

Set brightness and contrast for the room

There is no universal brightness number. The useful target is a display that does not look like a lamp compared with the room and does not force you to strain to see dark text. Adjust the monitor’s brightness while seated at your normal distance and repeat the check when daylight changes.

  1. Set a moderate brightness in the monitor’s on-screen controls.
  2. Compare a white document or web page with the surrounding wall or desk. If the screen appears to glow strongly in a dim room, lower brightness or add soft ambient light.
  3. If text looks washed out after reducing brightness, try a modest contrast increase or use a less reflective viewing angle.
  4. Recheck in both daytime and evening conditions. A setting that feels comfortable at noon may be too bright after sunset.

Brightness and glare interact. A reflection can make you increase brightness, which then makes the display uncomfortable when the reflection disappears. Remove the reflection first, then set brightness for the actual room.

Decide whether a matte anti-glare filter is worthwhile

A matte anti-glare monitor screen filter can scatter reflected light when you cannot reposition the desk or control a window. It is an optional fallback, not a replacement for correcting the light path. OSHA cautions that a filter should not significantly reduce screen visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Most sensible first choice Filter considerations
You can move the monitor or lamp Reposition the screen and light at no cost. Usually unnecessary unless reflections return at another time of day.
Sunlight is unavoidable but blinds are available Use the blinds or curtains to diffuse direct light. A filter may supplement, but cannot stop a strong beam entering the room.
The desk is fixed in a shared or rented space Use the most effective reversible lighting change first. Verify panel dimensions, attachment method, viewing angle, and whether the filter is removable.
You use a touch screen or stylus Check that the accessory is designed for touch input. Some overlays can change touch response, surface feel, or perceived sharpness.

Before applying one, measure the visible panel rather than relying only on the monitor’s advertised diagonal size. Confirm that the overlay leaves ports, cameras, speakers, and bezel controls usable. Stop using it if fine text becomes noticeably less clear; reduced visibility can create more strain than the reflection it was meant to solve. No filter is guaranteed to relieve symptoms, and none corrects an unsuitable viewing distance or unresolved lighting problem.

Build breaks into screen work

Near focusing and concentrated attention often mean fewer blinks and a dry, tired feeling. The National Eye Institute’s 20-20-20 reminder is: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Treat it as a simple prompt to relax near focus, not as a measured guarantee of symptom reduction.

  • Use a timer, calendar reminder, or a natural task transition to prompt the pause.
  • Look across the room or out a window rather than at another nearby device.
  • Blink normally and fully several times when you return to the screen; do not stare without blinking while reading.
  • During longer breaks, stand, change posture, and let your eyes focus at different distances.

Breaks work best alongside a readable display. They do not make persistent pain, marked redness, or continuing blur safe to ignore.

What about blue-light glasses and computer glasses?

The AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use. Such glasses should not be presented as the evidence-based solution to glare or digital eye discomfort.

Prescription computer glasses are different. They are prescribed for a person’s vision needs and a particular working distance. Someone who cannot focus comfortably at the monitor may benefit from an eye examination and an appropriate prescription, rather than purchasing non-prescription blue-light lenses. Correcting an unrecognized prescription issue is a clinical decision; it is not the same as filtering reflections.

Use a practical troubleshooting sequence

If you see a clear reflection

Keep the monitor in place and rotate it a few degrees at a time until the reflection leaves the viewing area. If that compromises your posture, move the window covering or lamp instead. Recheck from the seated position after each change.

If the display is bright but there is no reflection

Lower brightness, add gentle ambient light, and compare the screen with the surrounding room. Avoid solving a bright-screen problem by sitting in darkness or by increasing contrast until letters develop halos.

If you lean forward or squint

Move the display back toward the 20–40-inch working range, enlarge text, and confirm that the top edge is not above eye level. If text remains difficult to resolve at a comfortable distance, arrange a vision check rather than continually moving closer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If changing the angle creates neck discomfort

Return the screen to a neutral position, then adjust height and chair position independently. The correct glare solution should not require a sustained twist, raised chin, or hunched shoulders.

If glare returns only at certain times

Observe the workstation in morning, midday, and evening light. Seasonal sun angles can change the reflection path. A partially closed blind or a movable shield may be more practical than repeatedly changing the monitor position.

Compare solutions by cost and reversibility

Start with changes that cost nothing and can be reversed in minutes. Rotating the monitor, moving a lamp, changing brightness, enlarging text, and adjusting existing blinds are all useful tests. Make one change at a time and work for a normal session before deciding whether it helped. This approach also prevents buying an accessory for a reflection that could have been eliminated by moving the screen a few inches.

Option Cost and commitment Best use Possible limitation
Monitor or lamp repositioning No purchase; immediately reversible A visible window, fixture, or lamp reflection May be difficult with a fixed desk or shared room
Blinds, curtains, or a lamp shield Existing items are free to adjust; new hardware is a room change Recurring daylight or exposed-bulb glare Must still leave enough diffuse light for nearby work
Brightness, contrast, and text-size changes No purchase; reversible in display settings A screen that is too bright or hard to read Cannot remove a physical reflection
Matte anti-glare filter Optional purchase; removable if compatible Persistent reflections in a layout you cannot change Incorrect fit or reduced sharpness can make reading harder

There is no need to choose the most expensive option first, and no current price or brand is necessary to judge whether a filter is appropriate. The useful comparison is whether it solves the actual source of glare without creating a visibility or posture problem.

Adapt a shared or rented workspace

If you cannot move the desk, look for smaller reversible changes. Close one side of a blind, rotate the monitor on its stand, move a lamp to the opposite side, or add a temporary shield between the bulb and the screen. Ask whether the monitor can be placed perpendicular to the window even if the desk itself stays put. A portable matte filter is more sensible after these tests, not before them.

Document the setup that works at different times of day. A window that is harmless in the morning can reflect afternoon sun, and a ceiling fixture may become distracting after sunset. Marking a monitor position or keeping a preferred blind angle makes the solution repeatable without constant trial and error.

When to contact an eye-care professional

Home-office adjustments are appropriate for temporary discomfort, but they are not a diagnosis or treatment for an eye condition. The AAO advises contacting an ophthalmologist when symptoms persist. Seek professional attention for eyes that are consistently red, blurry, or watery, or for light sensitivity or pain. An examination can distinguish a workspace problem from dry eye, an uncorrected prescription, or another condition that needs care.

Do not keep adding filters, lowering brightness, or buying special eyewear while symptoms are worsening. Record when symptoms occur, how long they last, and whether they affect one or both eyes; that information can help the clinician and does not replace the examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop window glare on my computer screen?

From your seated position, rotate the monitor so its face is perpendicular to the window, then adjust blinds or curtains to block direct sunlight. Keep diffuse room light for the keyboard and notes. If the desk cannot move, reposition the lamp or use a reversible shield before considering a matte filter.

How far should my monitor be from my eyes?

OSHA gives a general range of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm), with at least 20 inches as a quick tip. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests about 25 inches or arm’s length. Use a distance where text is clear without leaning; enlarge text instead of moving the screen closer.

Should the top of my monitor be above my eyes?

No. Keep the top edge at or below eye level so your natural gaze is slightly downward. Check the position while typing in your normal chair, and adjust the chair and monitor together so the change does not create neck or shoulder strain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do anti-glare screen filters help?

A matte anti-glare monitor screen filter can help scatter reflections when you cannot control the desk or lighting, but it is optional. Measure the visible panel, verify touch-screen compatibility, and remove it if fine text becomes less clear. OSHA advises that a filter should not significantly reduce visibility.

Why do my eyes feel tired after working at my desk?

Reflections, a screen that is much brighter than the room, small text, an awkward viewing distance, and prolonged near focus can all contribute to temporary discomfort. Correct the light path first, set a readable distance and brightness, enlarge text, blink normally, and use the 20-20-20 reminder.

Are blue-light glasses the best fix for screen strain?

The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use. Prescription computer glasses are different and may be appropriate for a person’s vision needs at screen distance; discuss that option during an eye examination rather than treating it as a glare filter.

When should screen discomfort be checked by a professional?

Contact an ophthalmologist if symptoms persist or if your eyes are consistently red, blurry, watery, sensitive to light, or painful. Do not keep adding filters or lowering brightness while symptoms worsen; a professional can assess dry eye, an uncorrected prescription, or another condition.

The Bottom Line

Fix the light path first: place the monitor perpendicular to windows, diffuse or shield bright sources, and move lamps out of the reflection path. Then keep the screen directly ahead at roughly 20–40 inches, with its top at or below eye level, readable text, and room-matched brightness. Take 20-20-20 distance breaks, use a matte filter only when needed, and seek eye care for persistent or concerning symptoms.
