The quickest way to reduce ghosting is to select your monitor’s fastest speed-oriented refresh mode for scrolling, typing, and pointer movement, then run a Full Refresh (or enable Auto Full Refresh) when faint images accumulate. Switch to a Normal, Text, or quality-oriented mode for reading and still documents. Finally, reduce operating-system animation and smooth-scrolling effects, because conventional LCD-oriented rendering can overwhelm an E Ink panel.

These settings involve a trade-off: fast modes lower input delay but usually leave more residue or reduce image quality; slower modes produce cleaner text and color at the cost of latency and occasional flash refreshes.

What ghosting is on a color E Ink monitor

Ghosting is the faint remnant of a previous page, window, cursor, or image that remains visible after the display changes. BOOX defines it as “faint remnants of previous content, like text or images, remain visible after the screen refreshes.” On an E Ink monitor, the image is formed by moving charged ink particles rather than by continuously driving backlit pixels. A partial update moves only the particles needed for the changed area, so some particles can stop short of their ideal position. The old image then remains as a pale outline.

Color panels add another layer of timing complexity. E Ink’s Kaleido construction combines a TFT backplane, an ink layer, a color-filter layer, and a protective sheet. The Kaleido product description specifies 16 grayscale levels and 4,096 colors. Updating grayscale and filtered color areas does not have exactly the same timing or contrast behavior as updating a monochrome panel, so color transitions can look slower or leave more residue.

Ghosting is not normally a sign that the panel is permanently damaged. It is usually a consequence of the selected waveform, refresh mode, content, temperature, and the number of partial updates performed since the last full refresh. A full refresh drives a more complete particle reset and clears accumulated residue, although it may briefly flash and take longer.

Choose the right refresh mode for the task

Use the mode that matches what is changing on screen instead of leaving the monitor in one setting all day.

Task Recommended mode What to expect
Scrolling web pages, moving a pointer, typing, or dragging windows Speed, Video, or the manufacturer’s fastest mode Lowest latency, but more residual outlines and lower image cleanliness are possible
Reading books, articles, and text-heavy documents Normal or Text Cleaner characters and fewer artifacts, with slower response than Speed
Viewing a still diagram, photo, or presentation slide Quality, Normal, or Slideshow Better tonal and color rendering; motion response is not the priority
After a long session of partial updates Full Refresh or Auto Full Refresh A visible flash may occur while accumulated ghosting is removed

BOOX monitors expose Normal, Text, Video, and Slideshow presets through BOOX Super Refresh. BOOX recommends Speed mode for third-party applications when you need the most responsive interaction. Names differ by model, so select the equivalent speed-oriented setting in your monitor’s control utility rather than assuming every brand uses the same label.

How to reduce ghosting step by step

1. Confirm the intended driver or control utility

Install and open the refresh-control software supplied for your monitor, or use the monitor’s on-screen display if it has one. A generic display driver can leave the panel in a conservative waveform and hide controls for Speed, Text, Video, or Full Refresh. Check that the utility identifies the connected monitor and that changes are applied to the active input.

2. Select a speed mode before interacting

Choose Speed, Video, or the fastest available preset before scrolling, editing, or moving windows. If the monitor has separate presets for each application, assign the speed preset to your browser, terminal, office software, and other interactive programs. BOOX’s guidance for third-party apps is to choose Speed mode to efficiently limit ghosting during active use.

3. Test a short, controlled scroll

Scroll a text page slowly, then at your normal pace. Look for two different problems: a delayed whole-page response indicates latency, while pale lines or blocks from the previous position indicate residue. If latency is acceptable but residue is distracting, move one step toward Normal or Text. If the image responds too slowly, return to Speed and plan periodic full refreshes.

4. Run a manual Full Refresh when residue builds

Use the control utility’s Full Refresh command or the matching item in the on-screen menu. A full refresh is more effective at clearing accumulated ghosting than continuing to issue partial updates. Run it after a dense, image-heavy page, prolonged scrolling, or a session in which text remains visible after windows have moved. Expect a brief flash and a longer update; that is the reset working, not a fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Enable Auto Full Refresh if available

Auto Full Refresh periodically inserts a complete reset after a defined number of partial updates or when the monitor detects conditions likely to produce residue. It is useful when several people use the monitor or when you do not want to remember manual resets. Set the interval high enough for your workflow: an interval that is too short causes distracting flashes, while one that is too long permits heavy ghosting.

6. Reduce unnecessary motion from the computer

Turn off effects that repeatedly redraw the screen. In Windows, open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects and disable Animation effects; also turn off browser smooth scrolling if it causes a stream of intermediate frames. In macOS, open System Settings > Accessibility > Display and enable Reduce motion; disable animated zooming and other decorative transitions where individual application settings provide them. Menu names can vary by operating-system release.

These changes do not make the E Ink particles move faster, but they reduce the number of intermediate frames the monitor must process. DASUNG’s documentation specifically warns that conventional Windows and macOS rendering effects can be inappropriate for E Ink monitors.

7. Recheck after changing temperature or firmware

E Ink behavior is model-specific and can change with panel temperature, firmware, and the connected computer’s output. If ghosting suddenly becomes worse, check the monitor manual for operating-temperature limits and firmware notes, then restart the monitor and its control utility. Apply firmware updates only through the manufacturer’s documented procedure and keep the monitor connected to stable power while updating.

Why color E Ink refreshes more slowly than an LCD

An LCD can change a pixel by controlling a liquid-crystal cell many times per second while a backlight remains on. E Ink must physically reposition micro-ink particles. A partial waveform moves only enough particles to represent the changed region; a complete waveform moves more particles and reverses more of the previous state. That physical movement creates a delay and explains why a fast mode can leave a faint previous image.

Color E Ink adds a color-filter layer over the ink. The filter enables color without requiring a separate colored-particle system in the panel, but it changes optical contrast and the amount of work needed to produce a stable color state. A saturated colored block, a photograph, and small black text can therefore have different apparent response times even on the same monitor.

E Ink’s Gallery 3 technical material provides technology-level context rather than a guarantee for every monitor: 350 milliseconds for a monochrome text page turn, about 500 milliseconds for color in fast mode, 750–1,000 milliseconds in standard mode, and about 1,500 milliseconds in optimal mode. The same material contrasts those figures with roughly two seconds for monochrome and ten seconds for color in first-generation technology. Actual results depend on the panel, firmware, temperature, input signal, and the mode selected.

Understanding the speed-versus-cleanliness trade-off

Refresh presets alter the waveform and image-processing priorities. A speed preset uses a more aggressive update strategy and may accept lower intermediate accuracy so that the new frame appears sooner. A quality or optimal preset spends more time driving particles toward the intended state, improving clean text and tonal transitions but increasing delay. Full refreshes provide the cleanest reset, yet the flash and pause make them unsuitable for every mouse movement.

  • Use Normal or Text when legibility of small characters matters more than immediate response.
  • Use Slideshow or another quality preset for a static presentation, illustration, or image that will remain unchanged.
  • Use Full Refresh when residue is already visible; changing modes alone does not erase ghosting that has accumulated.

Flicker is a separate concern from ghosting. A full refresh can remove residue but creates a conspicuous flash. If flashes are distracting, increase the interval between automatic full refreshes and use a Normal or Text mode that needs fewer emergency resets. If residue is more disruptive than flicker, shorten the interval or trigger a manual reset at natural breaks.

A practical workflow for common activities

Web browsing and research

  1. Assign the browser to Speed or Video mode.
  2. Disable browser smooth scrolling and unnecessary page animations.
  3. Scroll in deliberate increments instead of repeatedly flicking the wheel for many intermediate frames.
  4. After reading an image-heavy page or a long sequence of scrolls, run Full Refresh before opening a text-critical document.
  5. Switch to Text or Normal mode when you stop scrolling and read for several minutes.

Writing, coding, and terminal work

  1. Start in Speed mode so cursor movement and typing do not lag.
  2. Turn off animated cursors, blinking effects, and editor minimap animations if they create repeated redraws.
  3. Keep line spacing and font size large enough that a faint previous line does not obscure the current one.
  4. Use a manual Full Refresh after switching between several full-screen applications or after a long compile log.
  5. For proofreading a final document, change to Text or Normal mode and refresh once before checking small punctuation and color-coded syntax.

Video, presentations, and image viewing

  1. Use Video for moving footage or rapid slide navigation, understanding that color accuracy and residue may be worse.
  2. Use Slideshow or a quality-oriented mode when a single slide or illustration remains on screen.
  3. Disable transition effects in presentation software; cut directly between slides when possible.
  4. Run Full Refresh before judging fine color boundaries or thin lines in a diagram.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Faint text remains after every scroll

  • Run Full Refresh and observe whether the old text disappears. If it does, the issue is accumulated partial-refresh residue.
  • Move from Speed to Normal or Text for reading sessions.
  • Reduce smooth scrolling and other animated redraws.
  • If the residue returns unusually quickly, verify the monitor’s driver, firmware, and temperature guidance.

Scrolling feels delayed even in Speed mode

  • Confirm the control utility actually applied Speed to the active input and application.
  • Close software that is continuously animating or recording the screen.
  • Check the cable, adapter, and selected resolution or refresh signal; an unstable link can cause dropped or repeated frames.
  • Try a different computer or input only as a diagnostic step, because the monitor’s waveform cannot compensate for a slow source pipeline.

The screen flashes too often

  • Increase the Auto Full Refresh interval or disable automatic resets temporarily.
  • Use Normal or Text mode to reduce the amount of residue that forces emergency resets.
  • Schedule a manual Full Refresh at a natural break instead of during active interaction.

Colors look weak or muddy

  • Switch from Speed or Video to Slideshow, Normal, or another quality preset for still content.
  • Run a Full Refresh before evaluating an image.
  • Remember that Kaleido color uses a filter layer and is not intended to match the saturation or contrast of a conventional emissive or backlit display.

Ghosting appeared after a firmware update

  • Restart both the monitor and its control utility.
  • Reapply the intended mode; updates can restore default presets.
  • Read the model-specific release notes and temperature requirements before attempting a rollback or another update.

Color E Ink monitor specifications that affect perceived refresh

When comparing monitors, do not rely on one headline refresh number. Record the mode and content associated with every figure.

What the published timing figures do—and do not—tell you

The 500-millisecond fast-color, 750–1,000-millisecond standard, and 1,500-millisecond optimal figures from E Ink’s Gallery 3 material describe technology behavior under the publisher’s stated conditions. They are useful for understanding why color E Ink feels slower than an LCD, but they are not a guaranteed specification for every Kaleido monitor. A monitor may use a different controller, waveform, resolution, or application mode.

Likewise, a manufacturer’s “up to 37 Hz” statement describes the maximum advertised operating condition for the specified product and mode. It should not be converted into a universal color-refresh rate. Before buying or troubleshooting, check the current manual and firmware notes for the exact model and input configuration.

When a full refresh is the right fix—and when it is not

A full refresh is the right response when a recognizable previous page, window border, or block of color remains after the new content is stable. It is not a cure for a consistently slow source computer, a bad cable, an unsupported resolution, or a mode that was never applied. Those problems must be corrected at the driver, connection, or operating-system level.

Use the least disruptive intervention first: select the appropriate preset, remove unnecessary animations, and then perform a full refresh. If the monitor is still slow after a clean reset and a confirmed speed mode, investigate the source device and connection rather than repeatedly forcing resets.

A concise operating checklist

  • Before scrolling: select Speed or Video.
  • Before close reading: select Text or Normal.
  • After heavy partial updates: run Full Refresh.
  • For unattended use: enable and tune Auto Full Refresh.
  • For less residue: disable smooth scrolling and decorative animations.
  • For image quality: use Slideshow or another quality preset, then refresh once before judging detail.
  • For persistent changes: check the model manual, firmware notes, driver, cable, and temperature.

Limits you should expect from color E Ink

No setting eliminates the physical movement time of micro-ink particles. Faster presets reduce perceived delay by accepting compromises in residue, contrast, or color quality. Slower presets improve cleanliness but cannot behave like a high-refresh LCD. Kaleido’s 4,096-color, 16-grayscale capability is designed for low-power reflective viewing, not identical motion or saturation performance to a conventional monitor.

Once the monitor is configured for the task, ghosting becomes a maintenance choice: tolerate a little residue for immediate interaction, or accept a slower update and occasional flash to obtain a cleaner image. Matching the preset, refresh schedule, and computer rendering behavior to what is on screen produces the largest practical improvement.
