To reduce ghosting on a color E Ink display, select the fastest refresh mode that keeps text readable, enable automatic or per-app full refresh, and run a manual Full Refresh when residual images accumulate. Use a faster mode for text navigation and a slower quality mode for comics, charts, photos, or pages with large color areas. Some delay and occasional flashing are inherent to color E Ink: color transitions need longer drive waveforms than monochrome updates.
The settings names differ by manufacturer and firmware, but the underlying trade-off is consistent. More speed usually means more visible residue; cleaner color and fewer artifacts require more time. The procedure below uses the controls documented for BOOX devices while explaining how to apply the same logic on other color E Ink readers and tablets.
What ghosting is and why color page turns are slower
Ghosting is leftover content from a partial update
Ghosting is the faint text, image, or gray tint that remains after a page, menu, or scroll operation. E Ink displays move charged ink particles through a fluid. A partial update changes only the areas that need to move, rather than driving every pixel through a complete reset waveform. If some particles do not reach their intended positions, traces of the previous image remain visible.
BOOX describes this as incomplete movement of ink particles between updates. Its display-settings guidance also notes that ghosting can accumulate as more taps occur before a full refresh. That is why a page may look acceptable immediately after opening a document but become increasingly dirty after repeated scrolling, zooming, or page turns.

Color requires longer drive waveforms
Color E Ink is not simply monochrome E Ink with a color switch. The controller must move particles into color states, often through more complex sequences, and the panel has to settle before the intended color is visible. Those longer waveforms increase the time required for a clean update.
E Ink’s Gallery 3 specification, published with 2025 timing figures, illustrates the range:
| Gallery 3 update target | Published time | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Monochrome update | 350 ms | Fastest stated target for black-and-white content |
| Fast color mode | 500 ms | Prioritizes responsiveness over the cleanest color result |
| Standard color mode | 750–1000 ms | Balances color quality and page-turn time |
| Best-color mode | 1500 ms | Uses the longest stated waveform for color appearance |
These are display-family specifications from E Ink, not a promise that every reader, application, or page layout will update in exactly that time. The device maker’s controller, firmware, content type, and chosen mode all affect what you see. A Gallery 3 reader can therefore feel faster or slower than another Gallery 3 product, and a manufacturer may use different names for equivalent modes.

Fast or Speed mode for navigation
Start with Fast, Speed, or the equivalent performance-oriented mode. It shortens the wait when you are turning through text, scrolling a settings page, selecting links, or navigating a library. The trade-off is more residual text, less even backgrounds, and less accurate color transitions. If the page remains readable and the artifacts disappear on the next update, this is usually the most comfortable everyday setting.
Standard or quality mode for cleaner pages
Choose Standard, Quality, or a similar middle setting when a fast mode leaves obvious shadows. A slower waveform gives more particles time to reach their target positions, so text edges and backgrounds generally look cleaner. Use it for documents with diagrams, highlighted passages, or moderate color where a speed mode looks distracting but the slowest mode is unnecessary.
Best-color mode for image-heavy content
Reserve the highest-quality or Best Color setting for comics, illustrations, photos, maps, and pages dominated by large color regions. Gallery 3’s published best-color target is 1500 ms, so the extra visual quality can come with a clearly noticeable pause. This mode is not a defect fix for every page; it is a deliberate choice when color fidelity matters more than rapid navigation.

Full Refresh as a reset, not an everyday animation
A Full Refresh drives a more complete reset of the panel. It can clear accumulated artifacts that remain after several partial updates, but it normally flashes and takes longer. That flash is the visible cost of moving more particles through a reset sequence. Current color E Ink hardware cannot guarantee a perfectly clean image, instant page turns, and no flash at the same time.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step-by-step procedure to reduce ghosting
1. Establish a baseline on the page that looks dirty
- Open the document, book, comic, or third-party app where ghosting is easiest to see.
- Turn a few pages or scroll until the problem appears. Note whether the residue is gray text, a previous page outline, color patches, or a general haze.
- Open the device’s refresh controls. Firmware labels vary, so look for terms such as Refresh Mode, Display Refresh, Full Refresh, Auto Full Refresh, Speed, Standard, Quality, or similar.
Testing on the same page makes the effect of each change easier to judge. A mostly white text page can hide color artifacts that are obvious on an illustration, so check both a normal reading page and your most demanding content.
2. Select the fastest mode that remains legible
- Choose the fastest available mode.
- Turn pages and scroll through several screens rather than judging a single update.
- If the text is sharp enough and the residue is faint, keep that mode for routine reading.
- If letters merge with the previous line, backgrounds become distracting, or color blocks remain visibly wrong, move up one quality level instead of immediately selecting the slowest setting.
This approach avoids paying the maximum latency cost when a middle setting already solves the practical problem.
3. Enable Full Refresh and Auto Full Refresh for each app
BOOX’s official instruction is: “First of all, make sure the ‘Full Refresh’ function is enabled for each app.” Open the refresh controls while the affected app is active, enable Full Refresh, and enable Auto Full Refresh if the firmware exposes that option. Repeat the setting for other apps instead of assuming one global preference covers every program.
Per-app controls matter because a built-in reader, a browser, a PDF viewer, and a sideloaded app can request different update behavior. Some applications use the device’s standard refresh profile; others need an app-specific override. After changing the setting, return to the same test page and perform several updates to confirm that automatic resets occur as expected.
4. Run a manual Full Refresh when artifacts build up
- Open the refresh control for the current app.
- Choose Full Refresh.
- Allow the flash and the longer update to finish before turning another page.
- If residue remains, run the Full Refresh control a few times, as BOOX recommends for persistent ghosting.
Do not interrupt the sequence by tapping repeatedly. A full reset is most useful when the panel is allowed to complete it. If the display becomes clean after the reset but gradually gets dirty again, the behavior is consistent with accumulated partial-update residue rather than a single permanently stuck image.

5. Test Speed mode in third-party apps
For third-party applications, BOOX specifically suggests trying Speed refresh mode to remove ghosting efficiently. Select Speed, test the same content, and then compare it with a slower quality mode. If Speed still produces a dirty page, switch to the next slower mode or trigger a Full Refresh. The best choice can differ between a browser, a note-taking app, and a document reader because each may redraw different regions of the screen.
6. Match the mode to the content
- Plain novels and long text: begin with Fast or Speed and raise quality only when text residue interferes with reading.
- PDFs with diagrams: use Standard or Quality when line art and labels remain after a fast update.
- Comics and illustrations: use a high-quality or Best Color mode for important pages, accepting the longer turn time.
- Maps, charts, and photos: prefer a quality mode for large color areas, then return to a faster mode when navigating between pages.
- Menus and short interactions: use the fastest mode; a brief artifact is often less disruptive than a long pause.
How the speed-versus-cleanliness trade-off works
| Mode category | Relative page-turn speed | Typical artifact level | Best use | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fast or Speed | Highest | Most likely to show residue | Text navigation, menus, rapid scrolling | Ghosting and less even color |
| Standard or balanced | Medium | Lower than Fast | General reading with diagrams or highlights | Noticeable delay on frequent turns |
| Quality or Best Color | Lowest | Usually the cleanest available partial update | Comics, photos, maps, large color areas | Longer waits and more visible update transitions |
| Full Refresh | Slow reset | Clears accumulated partial-update artifacts | When residue has built up or a page looks dirty | Flash, delay, and no instant-update behavior |
The table describes relative behavior, not a universal timing chart. The only numeric targets in the available Gallery 3 specification are 350 ms for monochrome, 500 ms for fast color, 750–1000 ms for standard color, and 1500 ms for best color. A device using Kaleido, another color E Ink family, or a custom controller can expose different timings and labels.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Ghosting appears after many taps but clears after a reset
This pattern is typical of accumulated partial-update residue. Keep Auto Full Refresh enabled for the app, reduce the number of rapid redraws when possible, and run a manual Full Refresh when the page becomes distracting. There is no single universal number of taps or minutes that applies to every firmware version; the useful trigger is the visible buildup of artifacts.

Every page turn is slow, even in a text-only book
Check whether the app is locked to Quality, Best Color, or another high-quality mode. Move down one level and test several turns. Also check whether a full refresh is being forced on every page; a full reset is intentionally slower than a partial update. If the device still behaves slowly in its fastest mode, compare the result with a simple built-in reader and check for firmware updates supplied by the device maker.
Fast mode leaves color blocks or a dirty background
Large color areas expose partial-update limitations more clearly than black text. Switch to Standard or Quality for that document, and use Best Color when the appearance of an illustration or photo is more important than speed. A manual Full Refresh can remove the accumulated haze, but it will not turn a color panel into a monochrome-speed display.
Only one sideloaded app has the problem
Open that app’s own refresh controls and apply the per-app settings there. Test Speed first, because BOOX recommends it for third-party apps, then move to a slower mode if the result remains dirty. If the app does not redraw correctly in any mode, use a different viewer for that content or check whether a newer app and firmware version is available.

A full refresh flashes but the page is still not perfect
The flash is expected during a complete reset. It removes accumulated artifacts but cannot overcome every limitation of the panel, waveform, controller, or source page. Confirm that you are judging the result after the reset has finished, then choose a quality mode for the content that continues to show residue. If a stable mark remains in the same place across resets and apps, record the device model, firmware version, and the test page before contacting the manufacturer; the available guidance does not establish a universal fix for hardware-specific faults.

Kaleido: a color filter over a Carta layer
E Ink Kaleido uses a printed color-filter array over a Carta ink layer. The approach is aimed at image-rich content such as charts, maps, photos, and comics while retaining the reflective, low-power character associated with E Ink. Because the color information is produced through the filter layer, the visual result and update behavior differ from a four-particle color panel. When comparing devices, examine text resolution and color resolution separately rather than assuming one specification describes both.
Gallery 3: four-particle color system
Gallery 3 uses a four-particle color system and publishes separate fast, standard, and best-color timing targets. Its 2025 figures show why a manufacturer may offer several modes: fast color is specified at 500 ms, standard color at 750–1000 ms, and best color at 1500 ms, while monochrome is listed at 350 ms. These values describe the display family; the user-facing labels and actual timing depend on the reader’s controller and firmware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two color E Ink readers
Do not compare a device using only its advertised fastest page-turn figure. A useful comparison records the behavior you will actually use:
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fast-mode latency | How quickly does ordinary text move in the fastest mode? | Determines comfort during navigation and frequent page turns. |
| Quality-mode timing | How long does a clean color update take? | Shows the delay you will accept for comics, charts, and photos. |
| Per-app refresh settings | Can each reader, browser, and sideloaded app have its own mode? | Prevents one demanding app from forcing slow behavior everywhere. |
| Automatic full refresh | Is Auto Full Refresh available, and can you set it per app? | Reduces the need to stop and reset the panel manually. |
| Manual reset gesture or control | Can you invoke Full Refresh without leaving the current app? | Makes recovery practical when artifacts build up. |
| Text and color resolution | Are black-and-white text resolution and color resolution specified separately? | Helps distinguish crisp reading from detailed color illustration. |
| Firmware support | Does the maker continue to improve refresh controls and app compatibility? | Refresh behavior depends heavily on the controller software. |
Treat manufacturer timings as specifications rather than guarantees for every application or page layout. Ask for the conditions behind a figure, such as the display family, update mode, and whether the number describes a partial or full refresh. A short advertised time in a fast mode does not tell you how long a high-quality color page or a full reset will take.
Practical habits that keep ghosting manageable
Use a mode profile for each type of work
Instead of changing settings randomly, keep a simple profile: Fast for navigation and plain text, Standard for mixed documents, and Quality or Best Color for image-heavy pages. If the firmware stores settings per app, assign the profile once and let the device remember it. If it does not, change modes only when the content changes rather than after every individual page.

Reset before judging a new setting
Residual artifacts from the previous mode can make a new mode look worse than it is. After changing a refresh setting, perform a Full Refresh, then test the same page and a second page with a different layout. This separates the effect of the new waveform from residue already present on the panel.
Allow automatic resets to finish
When Auto Full Refresh starts, avoid tapping through the flash. Interrupting a reset can leave you with neither the speed of a partial update nor the cleanliness of a completed full update. Wait for the page to settle before continuing.
Keep firmware and applications current
Refresh controls are firmware-specific, and third-party apps may interact with them differently. Install updates offered by the device maker and app developer when practical, then recheck your per-app modes because an update can add, rename, or relocate a setting. If a label changes, look for the same functions under refresh, display, waveform, or eink settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat you should expect from current color E Ink hardware
Ghosting is a consequence of partial updates, not evidence that every color E Ink panel is defective. Faster modes intentionally use shorter or less thorough waveforms, while cleaner color modes spend more time moving particles. Full Refresh is the mechanism for clearing accumulated residue, and its flash is part of that reset.
The most effective decision rule is simple: use the fastest mode that leaves text comfortable to read, enable Auto Full Refresh for every app that supports it, and switch to a quality mode or manual Full Refresh when the page itself—not the wait—becomes the distraction. For color-heavy work, plan around the panel’s slower waveform instead of trying to eliminate a physical limitation with repeated taps.
