Use the fastest refresh mode your E-ink device offers for the game, then trigger a full refresh when trails or leftover images become distracting. Disable optional animation and motion effects when the game exposes those controls. This usually improves perceived responsiveness, but it is a trade-off: fast modes can leave more ghosting or soften the image, while a full refresh takes longer, may flash, and can use more energy.
The exact menu names, refresh waveforms, and results depend on the device, firmware, operating system, game, and whether the game is native or third-party. The BOOX paths below are examples for BOOX products, not universal E-ink instructions. No single latency number or refresh interval applies to every E-ink gaming setup.
What ghosting and input lag actually are
Ghosting is residual image content
Ghosting is a faint remnant of an earlier frame that remains after a new frame is drawn. E Ink devices commonly accumulate these remnants as they perform multiple updates between full-screen refreshes; vendor guidance describes this as normal display behavior rather than proof that the panel is defective by itself. See BOOX’s Display Settings guidance.

Input lag is delay in the complete display path
Input lag is the time between an input event and the moment the updated result is visible. Touch or controller scanning, game logic, rendering, buffering, the display controller, waveform selection, and the panel itself can all contribute. A faster nominal panel refresh does not automatically make the entire path fast. The open-source Glider E-ink monitor project explains why refresh speed and total update latency are separate engineering concerns: Glider technical documentation.
You can therefore have low apparent lag with visible trails, or a relatively clean image that still feels delayed. Tune responsiveness and ghosting separately, then choose the compromise that works for the game.
Start with the device and game, not a generic setting
Before changing anything, record the exact device model, operating-system version, firmware version, game version, input method, and whether the game came from the device maker’s store or a third-party store. E Ink products expose different refresh controls, and some allow settings per application while others provide only a global choice.

- Open the device’s display or E Ink settings and note every available refresh mode.
- Check the game’s own graphics, animation, accessibility, and performance menus.
- Determine whether the game is updating continuously or only after discrete actions; a turn-based title may not benefit from the same setting as a scrolling action game.
- Use one repeatable scene, such as the same menu animation or a fixed route through a level, for every comparison.
Do not copy BOOX menu names onto another brand. If your device does not expose a setting, that is a compatibility limitation rather than a missing step.
Choose the fastest refresh mode that remains playable
Why faster modes help
E Ink controllers use different update behaviors, often called refresh modes. A faster mode prioritizes quicker visual updates and may use a less thorough waveform. That can make movement and input feedback appear sooner, but it can also increase residual images, reduce tonal accuracy, or lower apparent sharpness.
BOOX documents several refresh modes and warns that their behavior can vary between applications. Its Refresh Modes explanation is a useful example of the speed-versus-quality trade-off, not a universal specification for every E Ink device.

How to test a mode
- Launch the game and enter a scene with repeatable motion.
- Select the fastest available refresh mode in the device’s E Ink or display controls.
- Perform the same input several times. Observe how quickly the character, cursor, or menu responds and whether edges leave trails.
- Repeat in the next slower mode. Compare response feel, readability of moving objects, residual images, and any change in contrast.
- Keep the fastest mode only if the responsiveness benefit is useful in that game. If trails obscure targets or text, move back to a cleaner mode.
This is a user adjustment, not a measured benchmark. The available sources do not provide controlled, game-specific tests or a universal milliseconds figure, so describe your result as “feels more responsive” or “leaves less residue,” not as a guaranteed latency reduction.

Use per-app settings when available
A mode that works for a fast arcade game may be unpleasant for a strategy game with small text. If the firmware offers per-app refresh controls, assign the game its own profile rather than changing the entire device. BOOX describes app-specific refresh settings and full-refresh controls in Refresh Settings.
Reduce motion and animation in software
Every animated transition creates additional display updates. If the game or operating system has a Reduce motion, animation scale, transition, screen-shake, particle, or frame-effects option, disable nonessential effects and keep only those that communicate gameplay.

Controls to look for
- Reduce motion or reduced animations
- Disable menu transitions and parallax
- Turn off screen shake, decorative particles, and animated backgrounds
- Lower camera smoothing or interpolation when the game provides that option
- Use a static HUD and remove animated overlays that do not affect play
These controls can reduce the number or complexity of visible changes, but they cannot change a panel’s physical waveform. Their availability is app-specific. For example, Readwise documents a Reduce motion option for its own E Ink app at Using Reader on e-ink devices; that documentation does not establish that every game or operating system has the same control.
Use a full refresh as a cleanup step
A full refresh redraws the complete screen with a more thorough waveform. It is the most reliable way to clear accumulated residue, but it is not a free speed improvement: the update is slower, can visibly flash, and may consume more energy. E-paper display guidance describes the partial-versus-full-refresh trade-off and factors that influence ghosting in Microchip’s ePaper GUI documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When to invoke it
- Ghosting has become strong enough to hide game objects or text.
- A scene with large contrast changes leaves a persistent previous frame.
- You changed refresh modes and want a clean baseline before judging the new mode.
- The game has paused and a brief flash is less disruptive than playing through residue.
Use the device’s manual full-refresh command or the game’s E Ink optimization control. Do not promise a universal “refresh every five seconds” schedule: the right interval depends on the game’s update pattern, panel, firmware, and your tolerance for flashing. Refresh only when the visible residue affects play, rather than after every input.

BOOX example paths
On supported BOOX firmware, open the E Ink or display controls while the game is running, choose the app’s refresh settings, and select the manual or full-refresh command. The exact labels and location can change by model and firmware, so use the current instructions in BOOX Refresh Settings. For BOOX color E Ink apps, the vendor also documents app-specific ghosting optimization and full-refresh steps at this color E Ink guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare refresh choices on the dimensions that matter
Do not rank modes by their names alone. Compare them in the actual game using the same scene and input sequence.
| Dimension | What to observe | Typical trade-off | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsiveness | How soon visual feedback appears after a tap, button press, or controller movement | Faster modes may feel quicker, but total latency also includes processing, buffering, controller behavior, and waveform timing | No universal gaming latency figure is established; results are device- and game-specific |
| Residual ghosting and clarity | Trails, duplicated sprites, gray haze, text readability, and contrast | Fast updates can leave more residue or reduce image quality; slower or fuller updates are usually cleaner | Ghosting between full refreshes is documented vendor behavior |
| Full-refresh cost | Flash duration, interruption, and battery impact | Full refresh clears residue more thoroughly but takes longer and may use more energy | Display guidance documents the speed, flash, and energy trade-offs |
| Compatibility | Whether the control applies to this game and whether it can be saved per app | A setting may work in native software but be unavailable or behave differently in a third-party app | Vendor documentation says application behavior can vary |
Find out whether the lag is in the display path
If changing refresh modes does not noticeably alter input response, the delay may not be dominated by the panel. Work through the path from input to photons.

Input and operating-system checks
- Test the same action with touch and with a supported physical controller, if both are available. A difference points toward input scanning, connection, or event handling.
- Close background apps and overlays that may compete for processing time.
- Check whether a power-saving mode, thermal limit, or low-battery state changes the game’s update cadence.
- Disable unnecessary accessibility overlays, screen recorders, and floating utilities while testing.
Game and rendering checks
- Turn off optional visual effects before changing the E Ink mode again.
- Use a fixed camera position or repeatable menu animation to avoid confusing game variability with display behavior.
- Note whether the delay occurs only during heavy scenes. That can indicate processing or buffering rather than refresh selection.
Panel and controller limits
Display-controller architecture, waveform tuning, update scheduling, and repeated partial updates all influence latency and ghosting. Engineering documentation discusses these factors, but changing waveform files, controller parameters, or firmware without model-specific instructions can damage image quality or make the device unstable. Treat them as manufacturer-level tuning, not a casual user tweak. The Glider project’s architecture discussion at github.com/Modos-Labs/Glider explains why panel refresh speed alone cannot describe end-to-end response.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The game responds promptly but leaves trails | The selected mode favors speed over cleanup | Keep the fast mode if targets remain readable; otherwise choose the next cleaner mode and use a manual full refresh when residue builds |
| The screen is clean but every action feels delayed | Processing, input scanning, buffering, or controller timing may dominate | Reduce effects, close background tasks, compare input methods, and check for power-saving limits |
| A full refresh clears the image but interrupts play | Full-screen updates are inherently slower and may flash | Use full refresh during pauses or between rounds instead of after every move |
| Settings work in one app but not another | Refresh controls can be application-specific | Look for a per-app profile or an in-app E Ink setting; do not assume a global mode is being honored |
| Ghosting appeared after switching to a color or third-party app | That app may use a different update pattern or lack optimized controls | Apply the app’s documented E Ink options, reduce motion, and invoke its available full-refresh command |
| No visible change after selecting another mode | The firmware may not expose that mode to the game, or another bottleneck may dominate | Confirm the mode is assigned to the active app, restart the game, and compare a repeatable scene before concluding the control has no effect |
A repeatable tuning routine
- Write down the model, firmware, game, input method, and current refresh mode.
- Choose one repeatable scene and one input sequence.
- Run the game in the current mode and note response feel, trails, clarity, flashing, and battery impact.
- Switch to the fastest available mode and repeat exactly the same sequence.
- Try the next slower or cleaner mode if the fast mode makes targets difficult to read.
- Disable optional animations and repeat the comparison.
- Perform a full refresh, then judge the selected mode again from a clean screen.
- Save the best per-app profile if the firmware supports it. Record the setting so a firmware update or reset can be reversed.
Keep the profile that gives you the best balance for that particular game. A rhythm or action game may justify more artifacts for quicker feedback; a text-heavy or turn-based game may benefit more from clarity and fewer full-screen flashes.
What not to assume
- Do not assume every E Ink panel has the same refresh modes, waveform behavior, or full-refresh interval.
- Do not treat a vendor’s BOOX menu path as a universal Android or E Ink path.
- Do not claim a fixed milliseconds improvement without dated, model-specific measurements.
- Do not replace firmware or alter low-level waveform parameters merely to chase lower latency.
- Do not interpret ordinary residual images as panel failure unless they persist after a proper full refresh and the manufacturer’s support process identifies a fault.
Bottom line for practical play
Start with the game’s fastest supported refresh mode, remove nonessential motion, and compare the result in a repeatable scene. If residue interferes with reading or aiming, step back to a cleaner mode or run a full refresh during a natural pause. If response still feels late, investigate input, processing, buffering, and controller behavior rather than assuming the panel’s visible refresh is the only cause. The best setting is the one that preserves usable feedback and readability on your specific device and game.
