To reduce ghosting and black smearing on a Samsung Odyssey G5, run it at the highest stable refresh rate and its native resolution, then start with Response Time: Faster. Compare Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync) on and off in the game and frame-rate range you actually use. Test MPRT/Extreme only if you accept a dimmer image and possible double images. These settings can make the trails less noticeable, but they cannot eliminate the G5’s underlying limitation: its VA panel can switch slowly between dark shades, so black objects often leave trails.
Exact behavior varies by model code, input and firmware. The S27CG55 and S32CG55, for example, support up to 165 Hz through DisplayPort but up to 144 Hz through HDMI according to Samsung’s 2024-era user guide. Identify your specific G5 before changing settings.
Why the Odyssey G5 shows black smearing
Ghosting is a visible trail behind a moving object. Black smearing is the especially obvious version seen when a dark object moves across a darker background: the old pixels take too long to reach their new shade, so part of the previous image remains visible for a few frames.
Most Odyssey G5 models use a VA (vertical-alignment) LCD panel. VA panels can produce strong contrast, but some dark-to-dark and black-to-grey transitions are substantially slower than their bright transitions. TFT Central measured transitions as slow as about 38 ms on a related Samsung VA gaming panel in a 2020 review. That is an illustration of why this panel class commonly smears, not a measurement of every G5 revision.

Refresh rate and pixel response are different. A monitor may accept a 165 Hz signal or show roughly 4 ms of input lag in a DisplayNinja review, yet still have slow dark pixel transitions. Input lag describes the delay before your action appears; response time describes how quickly each pixel changes. A low input-lag result does not prove that dark trails are absent.
Identify the exact G5 before tuning it
“Odyssey G5” covers several generations and sizes. Look for the complete model code on the rear label, the box or the monitor’s Information menu. Examples include C27G55T, S27CG55, S32CG55, S27AG55 and S27CG51. Menu labels, refresh-rate ceilings and the interaction between Response Time, Adaptive-Sync and MPRT differ between variants.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display and find Support, Information or a similarly named page to record the model and current signal.
- Record whether the cable is connected to DisplayPort or HDMI. The maximum refresh rate can differ by input.
- Note whether the artifact occurs at all frame rates or mainly below the monitor’s maximum. This matters when deciding whether VRR is helping.
Set the signal correctly first
Overdrive cannot compensate for a low refresh rate, an incorrectly scaled resolution or an unstable signal. Establish a clean baseline before comparing response modes.

- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the Odyssey G5 and choose its native/recommended resolution.
- Set the highest refresh rate that remains stable through the input you are using. Samsung’s guide for the S27CG55 and S32CG55 lists 60, 120, 144 and 165 Hz over DisplayPort, and 60, 120 and 144 Hz over HDMI. Other G5 codes may have different limits.
- If Windows does not offer the expected rate, check the GPU control panel, verify that the cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard, and confirm the model’s input specification. Do not treat an unavailable 165 Hz option as proof that the panel is defective.
- Apply the setting, then confirm the monitor’s Information screen reports the intended resolution and refresh rate. A stable 144 Hz signal is preferable to an intermittent 165 Hz signal that causes drops or blanking.
Use the same resolution and refresh rate while comparing settings. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell which change helped.
Choose the least objectionable Response Time mode
The Response Time control is an overdrive setting. It raises the voltage used to move pixels faster, but excessive overdrive can push pixels past the target value and create bright or dark halos called inverse ghosting or overshoot.

How to compare the modes
- Open a game or a moving dark test scene that reliably exposes the problem. A night map, dark corridor or white text moving over a charcoal background is more useful than a static desktop.
- Set Response Time to Faster, play or pan the camera for several seconds, and observe both the trailing edge and any bright outline ahead of the object.
- Try Standard. If the bright outline disappears but the trail becomes longer, you are seeing the normal overdrive trade-off rather than a new fault.
- Try Fastest for the same scene. Reject it if moving objects acquire bright halos, dark inverse trails or a grainy double edge.
- Return to the mode that looks best at your usual refresh and frame rate. There is no universal “correct” mode for every G5 variant.
DisplayNinja’s recommendation applies to the model it tested, not automatically to every size or generation. The visual comparison on your own unit is the decisive check.
Test Adaptive-Sync or FreeSync instead of assuming it helps
Adaptive-Sync (often labeled FreeSync in the monitor menu or GPU driver) changes the refresh timing to match the game’s frame rate. Samsung describes it as eliminating tearing without the usual lag and latency. That benefit is real, but some G5 variants use a different overdrive behavior while variable refresh is active. The result can be more visible dark trailing in the range where your frame rate fluctuates.
Run two controlled passes using the same game scene:
- VRR on: Enable Adaptive-Sync in the monitor, then enable the corresponding variable-refresh option in your graphics driver. Keep Response Time at Faster if the menu permits it. Note tearing, stutter, dark trails and bright overshoot at your normal frame-rate range.
- VRR off: Disable Adaptive-Sync in both places, select a fixed refresh rate and repeat the same camera movement. Some models expose a different Response Time choice when VRR is off; compare Faster and Standard again if available.
Keep VRR on when eliminating tearing and uneven frame pacing matters more than a modest reduction in smearing. Keep it off only when the same game, at your actual frame rates, clearly looks cleaner without it and occasional tearing is acceptable. Do not judge the setting from a single frame-rate cap that you never use.
What MPRT or Extreme does—and what it cannot do
Some Odyssey G5 menus label backlight strobing as MPRT, Extreme or a similar motion-blur-reduction mode. Instead of leaving the backlight continuously lit, the monitor flashes it briefly between refreshes. Your eyes see less of each pixel’s transition, so moving objects can appear sharper even though the liquid crystal’s physical response has not become faster.

MPRT is optional and has meaningful costs:
- Brightness usually falls because the backlight is off for part of each cycle.
- The mode may require a fixed refresh rate and may disable Adaptive-Sync or restrict the refresh rates you can select.
- At the wrong timing, you may see duplicated images, strobe crosstalk or a second faint trail.
- Flicker can be uncomfortable for some users, especially at lower refresh rates.
- Set a stable, supported refresh rate first.
- Enable MPRT/Extreme in the monitor’s Game menu.
- Check a moving object near the top, middle and bottom of the screen; strobe timing can make crosstalk vary by position.
- Disable it if the dimmer picture, flicker or duplicate images are more distracting than the original smear.
MPRT does not repair slow black-to-grey transitions. It is a motion-clarity compromise, not a permanent response-time fix.

Use Black Equalizer only for visibility
Black Equalizer changes the brightness of dark areas. Raising it can reveal enemies or objects hidden in shadows, while lowering it can preserve deeper blacks. It does not speed the pixels’ transition and therefore is not a ghosting cure.
Choose a Black Equalizer value for visibility and image preference after selecting Response Time and VRR. If raising it makes trails easier to see, that is because the dark scene has become brighter and the artifact is more apparent, not because the setting created the underlying response problem.
A complete troubleshooting workflow
Use this sequence when you want a repeatable result rather than a collection of random presets.
- Record the model: Write down the complete code and input connection.
- Reset only relevant picture controls: If you have accumulated many changes, use the monitor’s reset option, then reapply your preferred brightness and color settings later.
- Set native resolution and maximum stable refresh: Use the Windows or GPU control-panel steps above and verify the signal in the monitor Information page.
- Start with Faster: Inspect the same dark moving scene for ordinary trails and inverse halos.
- Compare Standard: Keep it if Faster’s overshoot is more distracting than its reduction in blur.
- Compare Fastest briefly: Reject it when halos or double edges appear.
- Run the VRR comparison: Test Adaptive-Sync on and off at your normal frame-rate range, not just at the desktop.
- Test MPRT last: Use it only at a supported fixed refresh rate and keep it only if the brightness and strobe artifacts are acceptable.
- Set Black Equalizer for visibility: Do not use it as a response-time adjustment.
- Retest after a cold start: Confirm the chosen mode remains active after the monitor and computer have been power-cycled. Some displays revert a mode when the input or refresh rate changes.
Recognize the artifact you are seeing

Why common “fixes” do not remove black smearing
A different cable
A compliant cable and a stable signal are necessary for the intended refresh rate, but a cable does not make the VA pixels switch faster. Replace or reseat it when you see dropouts, flicker, lost signal or an unavailable refresh option—not as a guaranteed cure for dark trails.

GPU driver updates
Drivers can affect whether VRR is available or whether a refresh rate is exposed. They do not change the LCD’s physical dark-transition speed. Update a driver when you have a compatibility or stability problem, then retest the same controlled scene.
Extreme Black Equalizer values
These alter shadow brightness and can change how noticeable the smear is. They do not alter response time. Keep the setting at a level that preserves detail without washing out the image.
One universal OSD preset
Panel revision, refresh rate, VRR state and room brightness all influence which artifact is most objectionable. A preset that looks acceptable on one G5 can produce overshoot or excessive blur on another. Use the comparison process rather than copying a number blindly.

Competitive play where trailing is the main problem
Use the highest stable refresh rate, start with Faster and compare VRR off if your frame rate is consistently high and stable. Consider MPRT only if you can tolerate reduced brightness and its timing restrictions. Watch for overshoot: a bright inverse trail can be more distracting than the original dark smear.
Single-player games with fluctuating frame rates
Adaptive-Sync may provide the smoother overall experience by removing tearing and uneven cadence. Keep it enabled if its dark-trailing increase is minor in your scenes. If the particular G5 shows a pronounced smear in the VRR range, compare a fixed refresh with an appropriate frame-rate cap and decide whether the cleaner transitions justify occasional tearing.

Desktop work and mixed use
Leave MPRT off unless you specifically prefer its motion behavior. Use Faster or Standard according to halo visibility, and select the refresh rate that is stable across your applications. A slight residual trail is often less disruptive than a dim, flickering strobe mode during text-heavy work.
When the monitor is the limiting factor
RTINGS described the Samsung Odyssey G55C as having a bad response time at any refresh rate. That assessment is model-specific, but it matches the broader VA behavior: settings can select a better compromise, not turn a slow dark transition into a fast one.
If you still see objectionable black smearing after testing the modes above, the realistic hardware solution is a faster-response IPS gaming monitor. Compare candidates by dark-transition response time, overshoot at your target refresh range, behavior with VRR enabled, maximum refresh rate and brightness when any strobing mode is active. Decide whether your priority is tear-free variable refresh or the minimum possible trailing; neither panel type wins every category.
