When petrol prices rise, the most reliable way to spend less on fuel is to use less of it: first avoid unnecessary car miles, then drive more smoothly, remove excess weight and aerodynamic drag, check tyre pressures, and keep the vehicle maintained. These steps do not guarantee a fixed saving. Your result depends on your journeys, vehicle, driving conditions and local fuel prices.
The figures below come from UK and US official guidance. Treat them as estimates under the stated conditions, not promises for every car. Use your own vehicle’s handbook and pressure placard for vehicle-specific advice, and always follow local speed limits and road conditions.
Start by using the car for fewer miles
Reducing miles cuts fuel use directly, without requiring a change to your car. The UK Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) describes using the car only when necessary as the best way to reduce fuel or energy use. Before trying to optimize every trip, look for journeys you can avoid, combine or make another way.
Combine errands and plan the route
- Group nearby errands into one outing instead of making several separate trips.
- Plan the order of stops to avoid backtracking, congestion and unnecessary detours.
- For a short journey, consider walking, cycling or public transport if the route, weather, accessibility and your circumstances make that practical.
A shorter route is not always the quickest or most fuel-efficient if it involves heavy stop-start traffic. The useful goal is to avoid unnecessary distance and predictable congestion, not to follow a particular navigation setting regardless of conditions.

It can help to review a typical week and identify trips that overlap or could be combined. A shop visit, appointment or school run may be easier to group with another nearby stop than to make as a separate drive. Not every journey is optional, and alternatives are not suitable for everyone; focus on changes that fit your schedule and needs.
Share regular journeys where practical
Car-pooling can reduce the number of vehicles making the same journey. It is most useful when people have compatible routes and schedules; a detour to collect passengers can offset some of the benefit. Compare the extra distance with the miles that would otherwise have been driven separately.
For a recurring commute or activity, consider whether a shared trip is practical on some days rather than assuming every journey can be changed. The relevant comparison is the additional distance and time for the shared route against the separate trips it replaces.
Drive smoothly and anticipate what is ahead
Repeated hard acceleration followed by braking wastes fuel. Look farther along the road, leave enough space to react, accelerate moderately, and ease off early when traffic is slowing. This reduces avoidable braking and acceleration and may also reduce wear on brakes and tyres.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) says aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. These are upper estimates, not typical savings or a prediction for an individual driver; the effect depends on how aggressively the person previously drove and on the vehicle and journey.
In practice, smooth driving means responding early rather than rushing up to a queue and braking sharply. Leave a safe gap, watch traffic flow ahead, and use moderate acceleration when moving away. These habits do not require driving unusually slowly or holding up other road users; the aim is to avoid unnecessary bursts of speed and braking while remaining safe and predictable.
Slow down without creating a hazard
Fuel economy generally declines at higher speeds. DOE guidance says average mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. That is a broad US generalization, not a recommended cruising speed for every vehicle, nor a reason to drive below a safe or lawful speed. Choose a steady, appropriate speed within the limit and adapt to traffic, weather, road layout and visibility.

There is no one speed that is ideal for every car, road or journey. Vehicle design, traffic and road conditions differ, and the cited DOE guidance does not override local rules. Do not turn the 50 mph observation into a target on a road where that speed would be unsafe or inappropriate. A consistent speed that is legal and suitable for the conditions is a more useful goal than frequent acceleration and braking.
Do not try to save fuel by tailgating, obstructing traffic, or coasting in neutral. If you ease off the accelerator to slow down, remain in control and follow your vehicle handbook; vehicle behavior varies. The VCA describes lifting off while remaining in gear, but the correct approach depends on the vehicle.
Reduce unnecessary idling
Switch the engine off when parked if it is safe and lawful to do so, and use a fitted stop-start system as intended. DOE estimates that idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour; this is a US-source estimate, not an exact rate for every engine. In the UK, the VCA notes that idling a parked vehicle can be an offence, so check and follow local rules.
This is about avoidable idling while parked, not switching off in a situation where doing so would be unsafe or conflict with vehicle instructions. If your vehicle has stop-start, use the system as designed rather than trying to imitate it in circumstances the handbook does not recommend.
Check tyres using the vehicle maker’s pressure
Look up the recommended tyre pressure in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle’s pressure placard, commonly found on the vehicle body or inside a door area. Use that figure—not the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall. The sidewall figure is not a substitute for the vehicle maker’s recommendation.
DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Fuel Economy says correct tyre inflation can improve gas mileage by 0.6% on average and by up to 3% in some cases. The result varies, and correct inflation also supports tyre life and safety. Check the pressures as directed by the vehicle maker; if you do not own a gauge, a service-station compressor may have one available.
Make sure you are checking the pressure against the correct specification for your vehicle, rather than using a generic figure found online or on another vehicle. The vehicle placard or manual is the reference. A tyre-pressure gauge can be a convenient optional tool, but buying one is not a requirement if you can access a suitable gauge or compressor elsewhere.

If a tyre is repeatedly losing pressure
Do not treat frequent reinflation as a fuel-saving routine. A tyre that keeps losing pressure may have a leak or another problem that needs attention. Check it promptly and arrange an inspection if the cause is not obvious. Do not overinflate tyres to try to improve economy; use the vehicle’s specified pressure.

Remove unnecessary load and aerodynamic drag
Take out items you do not need to carry and remove roof boxes or racks when they are not in use. Extra mass can require more energy to move, while equipment on the roof disrupts airflow. Roof equipment is particularly costly at speed.
| Equipment and condition | Reported fuel-use effect | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Roof box at 62 mph | Typically around 22% more fuel consumption | UK Vehicle Certification Agency guidance; page updated 2025. Estimate depends on equipment and conditions. |
| Roof box at 75 mph | Typically around 39% more fuel consumption | UK Vehicle Certification Agency guidance; page updated 2025. Estimate depends on equipment and conditions. |
| Empty roof bars at motorway speeds | Around 7% more fuel consumption | UK Vehicle Certification Agency guidance; page updated 2025. Estimate depends on equipment and conditions. |
These figures illustrate why removing unused roof equipment can matter, particularly on faster journeys. They are not a guaranteed reduction for your own car: the actual effect depends on the equipment, vehicle, speed and conditions. If you need a roof carrier for a trip, focus on removing it when you no longer need it.
When comparing these figures, note that the roof-box estimates are stated at different speeds, while the roof-bar figure refers to motorway speeds. They are not directly interchangeable measurements for every setup. The practical takeaway is not to buy or avoid a particular carrier based on a percentage, but to take off equipment that is no longer needed and avoid carrying unnecessary cargo.
Keep up with maintenance and fix real problems
Follow the service schedule in the vehicle handbook and use the motor oil grade recommended by its manufacturer. Avoid assuming that a repair, additive or more frequent service will improve fuel economy unless it addresses a diagnosed issue or is required by the maker.

The DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says using the manufacturer-recommended motor oil grade can improve fuel economy by 1%–2%. The page does not state a publication date, and the figure is not a guaranteed result for every vehicle. Check the handbook for the correct specification rather than choosing oil solely by a claim on the container.
Address a vehicle that is noticeably out of tune
DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Fuel Economy reports an average 4% improvement in gas mileage when a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle is fixed. That figure applies to the stated condition; it does not mean routine or unneeded repairs will deliver a 4% gain. If the car has a warning light, a change in how it runs, or a maintenance item due, use the handbook and seek an appropriate diagnosis.

Maintenance is a vehicle-specific step, not a reason to authorize work simply because fuel is expensive. Use the service schedule and respond to a problem that has actually been identified. The cited guidance supports fixing a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle and using the maker’s oil grade; it does not establish that generic additives or speculative repairs will save fuel.
Choose the next action by effort and likely relevance
There is no single saving estimate that applies across these actions. This comparison is about the type of change each one involves, not a ranking of guaranteed fuel reductions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Action | Effort or cost | Most relevant when |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid or combine car journeys | Requires changing travel plans; no vehicle adjustment | You can consolidate errands, share a regular trip, or use another suitable mode for a short journey. |
| Drive smoothly and limit idling | Low-cost habit change | Your driving includes hard acceleration, frequent braking, or avoidable idling. |
| Remove unused roof equipment and cargo | Simple adjustment | You carry unnecessary items or leave roof boxes or bars fitted between uses. |
| Check tyre pressure | Simple check; a gauge is optional | Pressures are unknown, due for checking under the maker’s guidance, or visibly low. |
| Maintain the vehicle and address faults | Depends on schedule and diagnosis | A service is due or a real fault has been identified. |
A useful order is to start with actions that change how much you drive, then work through driving habits and simple vehicle checks. Cutting an avoidable journey reduces miles directly; smoother driving and less idling are habit changes; removing roof equipment and checking pressures are straightforward checks. A repair is different: its cost and relevance depend on a real diagnosis, so it should not automatically come first just because a fuel-economy estimate exists for a specific fault.

A percentage reduction in fuel consumption is not the same as the same percentage reduction in your total household transport spending. Your fuel bill also depends on how far you drive and the price you pay; transport costs can include expenses other than fuel.
To estimate your own fuel spending, use your actual figures over a representative period:
- Record how much fuel you buy and what you pay for it over a typical week or month.
- Apply a percentage only if you have a relevant, evidence-based estimate for your situation. For example, do not assume DOE’s maximum estimate for aggressive driving applies to you.
- Compare fuel use and spending over a similar period after changing one or more habits, allowing for differences in distance, traffic, weather and fuel prices.
This comparison will not isolate the effect of each change unless you control for other factors, but it can show whether your overall fuel use is moving in the direction you want. Avoid converting official percentages into a fixed cash saving: prices, mileage and vehicle efficiency vary by market and driver.

If you want to understand whether a change helped, keep the comparison fair. A week with substantially more driving, heavier traffic or a different fuel price will not be directly comparable with the previous one. Looking at fuel bought alongside distance driven over a similar period gives more context than comparing spending alone. Even then, ordinary differences in journeys and conditions mean the result is an estimate of your experience, not proof that one action caused a particular percentage change.

Common fuel-saving mistakes to avoid
- Using the tyre sidewall maximum as the target: use the vehicle maker’s pressure placard or manual instead.
- Chasing a single ideal speed: the DOE’s above-50-mph observation is broad guidance, not a universal target. Stay within local limits and drive for the conditions.
- Coasting in neutral or compromising control: anticipate traffic and ease off safely while following the handbook.
- Leaving roof gear fitted between trips: remove unused boxes and bars when practical, especially if the car is driven at motorway speeds.
- Paying for speculative repairs or additives: the cited guidance supports recommended oil and fixing a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle, not generic additives or unnecessary work.
- Treating an estimate as a promise: official percentages describe particular conditions or averages, not a guaranteed result for every driver.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first when petrol prices rise?
Start by looking for avoidable car miles: combine errands, plan trips to reduce backtracking, share regular journeys where practical, and consider walking, cycling or public transport for suitable short trips. Then work on smooth driving, idling, roof equipment, tyre pressure and maintenance.
Does driving more slowly always save fuel?
Fuel economy generally declines at higher speeds, and US Department of Energy guidance says average mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. That is a broad generalization, not a universal speed target. Stay within local limits and choose a speed that is safe and appropriate for the road and conditions.
What tyre pressure should I use to improve fuel economy?
Use the pressure specified by your vehicle maker in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle placard. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall as the target. Correct inflation can support fuel economy, tyre life and safety.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are roof bars or a roof box worth removing when they are empty?
Removing roof equipment when it is not needed can reduce drag. VCA guidance reports that a roof box typically adds around 22% to fuel consumption at 62 mph and 39% at 75 mph, while empty roof bars can add around 7% at motorway speeds. Actual effects vary with equipment, vehicle and conditions.
Will an additive or repair automatically lower my fuel bill?
No. The cited guidance supports using the manufacturer-recommended oil grade and fixing a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle. It does not establish a benefit from generic additives or repairs that are not needed. Follow the service schedule and seek diagnosis for an actual problem.
How much money will these changes save me?
There is no fixed cash figure that applies to every driver. Fuel prices, annual mileage, vehicle efficiency and the changes you can make all matter. Track fuel bought, spending and distance over comparable periods; treat official percentages as estimates, not guaranteed household-budget savings.
The Bottom Line
When petrol costs more, begin with the miles you can avoid, then drive smoothly, reduce idling, remove unused roof equipment, check tyres against the vehicle maker’s pressure and keep up with necessary maintenance. Official percentages are estimates tied to particular conditions—not promises. Use the handbook, follow local laws and judge the effect against your own driving and fuel spending.
