You can often reduce fuel use with the car you already own by changing how you drive, eliminating avoidable idling, setting tire pressure from the vehicle’s placard, keeping up with scheduled maintenance, removing unnecessary weight, and combining trips. These steps do not produce one guaranteed percentage: fuel economy changes with driving behavior, speed, traffic, weather, terrain, vehicle condition, and vehicle design.
Start with the changes that cost nothing
The quickest place to look is behind the wheel. Fuel is consumed to accelerate the vehicle, overcome air and rolling resistance, and keep the engine running while stationary. Unnecessary speed changes, abrupt inputs, and wasted running time increase consumption without moving you farther.
Accelerate progressively
Press the accelerator smoothly instead of making repeated hard launches. Strong acceleration demands more fuel in a short period and is rarely useful in ordinary traffic. A progressive increase in speed gives you time to merge or join traffic without turning every start into a maximum-effort event.

Higher road speed generally requires more energy because aerodynamic resistance rises as speed increases. EPA fuel-saving guidance therefore recommends slowing down rather than speeding, especially when a small time saving would require a large increase in speed. Follow the posted limit and choose a steady pace that fits traffic, visibility, and road conditions.

Look ahead and brake gently
Scan well beyond the vehicle directly ahead. If you can see a queue forming or a signal changing, ease off the accelerator early and let the car lose speed gradually. This avoids the cycle of accelerating toward a stop and then braking hard. Gentle braking also gives following drivers more time to react. Do not coast in a way that compromises control; the objective is anticipation, not delayed reaction.
Use cruise control when it suits the road
Cruise control can help maintain an even speed when the road and vehicle make that appropriate. It is most useful when traffic is flowing consistently and you can monitor the road without frequent intervention. Disconnect it when conditions demand continuous speed adjustment or when maintaining a set speed would be inappropriate for the vehicle or roadway.
Stop paying for avoidable idling
An idling engine consumes fuel while the car is stationary. Turn the engine off during avoidable waits rather than leaving it running out of habit. EPA includes avoiding unnecessary idling among its fuel-saving recommendations.

Set tire pressure from the car’s specification
Correct inflation reduces rolling resistance and helps the vehicle operate as designed. Check the pressure when the tires are cold and compare it with the value on the vehicle’s tire-information placard or in the owner’s manual. EPA identifies the glove-box door and the driver-side door pillar as common locations for the placard.

Do not use the number molded on the tire as the car’s target
The maximum pressure printed on a tire is not necessarily the pressure recommended for your vehicle. Use the vehicle-specific specification instead. Different cars, load conditions, and tire sizes can require different settings.
A simple checking routine
- Locate the pressure specification on the door-pillar placard, glove-box door, or in the owner’s manual.
- Check all tires, including the spare if it is a full-size or temporary spare that must be kept ready for use.
- Measure before driving or after the tires have cooled, because heat changes the reading.
- Add or release air to reach the specified value, then replace the valve caps.
- Recheck after a repair, a tire change, or a significant temperature change.
An automotive tire-pressure gauge is an optional tool for this check. No particular gauge model has been evaluated here, so treat it as a measuring aid rather than a fuel-saving device in itself.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in a 2022 estimate, reported an average fuel-economy improvement of 0.6% from keeping tires properly inflated, with results potentially reaching 3%. Those figures are published averages and estimates, not a promise for every vehicle or driver.
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule
Maintenance protects fuel economy by keeping the engine, controls, and rolling components within the condition the vehicle was designed to use. Follow the intervals and procedures in the owner’s manual rather than relying on a generic “tune-up” timetable. Use the recommended grade of motor oil; the correct grade is a vehicle specification, not a universal fuel-saving choice.
Maintenance is not a guarantee that every service visit will produce a measurable improvement. A car that is already operating correctly may show little change, while a neglected or malfunctioning vehicle may consume substantially more fuel. The purpose of scheduled service is to prevent wear and identify problems before they become expensive or affect drivability.

Take an unexplained decline seriously
A sudden, persistent drop in mileage deserves diagnosis rather than a fuel additive or an accessory. Note when the change began and whether it coincided with a warning light, rough running, difficult starting, braking or steering changes, a tire issue, a seasonal change, or a different driving pattern. Give those observations to a qualified mechanic.
DOE’s 2022 material gives a case-specific estimate of at least 40% possible mileage improvement when a serious problem such as a faulty oxygen sensor is fixed. That is an example of the effect of correcting a major fault, not the expected result of routine service and not a typical gain for every car.
Remove weight and manage exterior cargo
Carry only what you need. Extra mass requires additional energy every time the vehicle accelerates, particularly in stop-and-go driving. Remove tools, equipment, sports gear, and other items that have accumulated in the trunk or cargo area but are not part of the current trip.
Exterior cargo can add aerodynamic drag as well as weight. DOE reported in 2022 that rear-mounted cargo boxes or trays can reduce gas efficiency by up to 2% in city driving and up to 5% on the highway. Those estimates apply to those accessories under the conditions considered; they do not establish the effect of every roof, hitch, rack, or container arrangement. Remove an accessory when you no longer need it and follow its maker’s instructions for loading and installation.
Combine short trips when practical
Trip planning can reduce the number of separate starts, parking maneuvers, and miles driven. Combine errands that are near one another, choose a route that serves several destinations, and avoid returning home between stops when doing so adds distance. This is a planning opportunity, not a reason to make an unsafe detour or to carry out errands that would otherwise be unnecessary.

For a short journey, consider whether walking, cycling, or public transport is practical and safe. If you must drive, grouping stops can make the existing trip serve more than one purpose. Keep the plan flexible: traffic, weather, accessibility, and the need to carry goods may make separate trips the sensible choice.
Measure your own results without overclaiming
Official guidance repeatedly warns that “your mileage may vary.” EPA attributes differences to controllable and uncontrollable factors, including driving style, road and weather conditions, vehicle condition, and vehicle design. A result from one driver, one season, or one model cannot be transferred directly to every other car.
Keep a simple log
- At each fill-up, record the odometer reading, the amount of fuel added, and whether the tank was filled to the same point.
- Note unusual conditions such as heavy traffic, long idling, extreme weather, a trailer, or a roof or rear cargo accessory.
- Apply one change at a time where practical, such as correcting tire pressure or removing an accessory.
- Look for a pattern across multiple fill-ups instead of judging a single tank.
This log will not produce a laboratory measurement, but it can reveal whether a change is persistent or whether a different route, season, load, or traffic pattern explains the difference. Treat any percentage you calculate as specific to your vehicle and circumstances.
Be skeptical of “magic” fuel-saving products
Fuel additives and aftermarket devices often promise large mileage gains with little effort. EPA advises skepticism. Its FAQ, Frequent Questions related to Transportation, Air Pollution, and Climate Change, says: “Many people want to believe that there are in fact such ‘magic products’ that will somehow greatly improve their vehicle’s fuel economy (and hence reduce the costs of fuel), but when it comes to products and claims such as this, it’s wise for drivers to be skeptical.”

EPA also explains that registration of an additive does not validate its fuel-economy claims. A registration or a dramatic testimonial is therefore not a substitute for evidence that applies to your vehicle, fuel, operating conditions, and maintenance state. If the car has a genuine fault, spend the effort on diagnosis and repair rather than an unverified accessory.

What the published estimates do—and do not—mean
The figures below come from DOE material published in 2022. They are useful for scale, but they are not guarantees or a ranking that every driver will reproduce.
| Action or condition | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping a vehicle properly maintained | 4% average better gas mileage | DOE estimate for properly maintained vehicles; individual results depend on the vehicle and the fault being addressed. |
| Keeping tires properly inflated | 0.6% average improvement, potentially as much as 3% | DOE estimate; use the vehicle’s specified pressure and do not assume the upper figure applies to your car. |
| Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor | At least 40% possible mileage improvement | Case-specific DOE estimate for correcting a major fault, not a routine-service result. |
| Rear-mounted cargo boxes or trays | Up to 2% lower gas efficiency in city driving; up to 5% lower on the highway | Applies to those accessories and conditions considered by DOE; other cargo setups can differ. |
EPA’s broader point is more important than any single number: fuel economy depends on factors the driver can control and factors the driver cannot. Use the estimates as context, not as a promise attached to a purchase or a maintenance invoice.
A practical order for putting the advice into practice
If you want a straightforward sequence, work from habits that require no purchase toward checks that may require service.

- Remove avoidable running time. Turn off unnecessary idling when doing so is safe and appropriate.
- Check the placard. Measure cold tire pressure and set it to the vehicle’s specified value, not the tire’s maximum molded value.
- Inspect the load. Remove items you do not need and take off an exterior cargo accessory when it is no longer required.
- Review the manual. Confirm the maintenance schedule and motor-oil grade for your exact vehicle.
- Investigate a sudden change. If consumption worsened unexpectedly, arrange diagnosis instead of assuming a generic tune-up or additive will solve it.

| Combining errands and removing unused cargo | No purchase | Trip planning and vehicle load | Reduce unnecessary miles and acceleration demand. |
| Automotive tire-pressure gauge | Optional tool purchase | Checking pressure against the placard | Verify inflation at home or before a trip; the gauge itself does not guarantee savings. |

| Diagnostic repair for a sudden decline | Repair expense varies | Providing symptoms and approving appropriate diagnosis | Find and correct a real fault rather than guessing. |
Common mistakes that waste money or hide the cause
- Inflating to the tire’s maximum number: that number is not automatically the vehicle’s recommended setting.
- Expecting one advertised percentage: official estimates are averages or case-specific figures, and your result can be smaller, larger, or unnoticeable.
- Calling every service a tune-up: a maintenance visit cannot correct a problem that has not been identified, and not every mileage issue is fixed by routine service.
- Ignoring a sudden change: a persistent decline can signal a fault that needs diagnosis.
- Leaving cargo accessories installed permanently: an unused box or tray can reduce efficiency, especially at highway speed.
- Judging from one tank: weather, traffic, terrain, idling, and route changes can overwhelm a small improvement.
- Buying an additive on registration alone: EPA states that additive registration does not establish fuel-economy performance.
Bottom line
Use the car you have more efficiently before considering replacement: drive smoothly at a moderate speed, anticipate stops, avoid unnecessary idling, maintain the tire pressure listed for the vehicle, follow the maintenance schedule and oil specification, carry less, remove unneeded exterior cargo, and combine practical trips. If mileage drops suddenly, have the vehicle diagnosed. These steps are low-risk ways to reduce fuel consumption, but no honest guide can promise one savings percentage for every driver or car.
