Reduce checkout friction by finding where shoppers hesitate, removing effort the business does not need, making every field and cost understandable, and giving people a safe way to recover from mistakes. Then verify each change with behavioral data and representative user sessions on desktop and mobile.
This is not a promise of a particular conversion lift. Checkout performance depends on traffic, pricing, shipping, promotions, payment availability, trust, and many other factors. The goal is to eliminate preventable confusion and effort so customers can complete a purchase with confidence.
Why checkout friction deserves its own audit
A customer can want a product, add it to a cart, and still abandon because checkout asks for too much, explains too little, or makes a mistake difficult to fix. Friction includes visible obstacles such as unnecessary fields, as well as uncertainty: whether a guest can buy, what a payment button will do, why a phone number is required, or whether an error erased the information already entered.
Baymard Institute’s current-state benchmark, updated November 25, 2025, rated 64% of desktop sites, 63% of mobile sites, and 46% of apps as “mediocre” or worse. The figures describe Baymard’s benchmark population, not every ecommerce site. Its 2025 article also cites an estimate that 70% of ecommerce users abandon a purchase after adding items to a cart; that figure is not a checkout-only abandonment rate. Baymard estimates that checkout design changes could represent up to a 35% potential conversion-rate increase for an average large ecommerce site, but that is a research-based opportunity estimate, not a forecast for your business. See Baymard’s 2025 checkout UX benchmark for the scope and qualifications.

The scale of the underlying usability work explains why small details matter. In its 2024 expanded study, Baymard reports more than 200 qualitative user and site usability test sessions across 16 ecommerce sites, more than 4,000 hours of research and testing, and over 1,350 medium-to-severe checkout usability issues. The 2025 benchmark reports more than 41,000 manually reviewed checkout performance scores and 33,000 categorized examples. These are observations across a research sample, not a guarantee that any one fix will produce the same result on your site. The study overview is available at Baymard’s ecommerce cart and checkout usability research page.
Start with a complete checkout map
Audit the entire path from cart to confirmation instead of inspecting only the payment screen. A shopper experiences one continuous task, while your organization may divide it among cart, account, address, delivery, payment, review, fraud checks, and confirmation systems.
- Record the current path. Capture the desktop and mobile sequence, including redirects, modal dialogs, inline validation, authentication prompts, address lookups, payment authorization, and the confirmation page. Note every decision a shopper must make and every piece of information the site requests.
- Mark the customer-visible states. Include an empty field, a valid field, a malformed value, a server-side error, a declined payment, a changed shipping cost, a back-navigation event, a timeout, and a refresh. Friction often appears only after an exception.
- Use analytics to locate drop-off. Measure entry and completion at each step and, where possible, each field or interaction. Segment desktop, mobile web, app, new customers, returning customers, payment method, geography, and traffic source so a high-level average does not hide a failing segment.
- Pair numbers with observation. Watch representative users attempt realistic purchases, review customer-support conversations, and inspect session recordings or feedback that your privacy practices permit. Analytics can show where people leave; observation helps explain whether the cause is wording, missing information, a technical failure, or a policy decision.
Baymard’s audit guidance recommends this combination of complete-path review, behavioral data, and qualitative evidence. The audit guide is at How to Audit Your Checkout Flow for Hidden Friction.

Make guest checkout prominent
Put a clearly labeled guest option beside, or before, account sign-in. Do not force account creation when the immediate task is purchasing. A sign-in form presented as the only route makes a first-time customer decide whether to surrender time and personal information before knowing whether the order will succeed.
If an account brings a real benefit—saved addresses, order history, faster future purchases, or loyalty features—explain that benefit at the point of choice. Keep registration to information needed for the account and order, and let the customer finish the purchase before asking for optional profile details. Avoid disguising account creation as a required checkout step.
Handle returning customers without blocking everyone else
Offer sign-in without making it the default assumption. Make password recovery and one-time authentication outcomes understandable, and preserve the cart when an authentication attempt fails. A returning customer who cannot remember a password should have a clear route back to checkout rather than a dead end.

Make every form field unambiguous
Ask only for information the transaction needs
List the business reason for each field in the audit. Remove fields that do not support fulfillment, payment, fraud prevention, legal requirements, customer communication, or a clearly explained service. “We may use it later” is not a customer-facing reason to add effort during a purchase.
Label required and optional fields locally
Mark each optional or required field where the customer encounters it. A form-wide note at the top is easy to miss, especially when the form scrolls or is split into sections. Use consistent labels, keep them visible while the value is entered, and do not make users infer whether a field is optional from its styling.
Explain unexpected requests
When a phone number, company name, delivery instruction, or other sensitive or unusual value is needed, explain why next to the field. The explanation should answer the customer’s concern in plain language—for example, whether the number is used by the carrier for delivery updates or by support if an order problem occurs. If the value is genuinely optional, say so and allow the customer to continue without it.
Use input behavior that matches the task
Choose an input type, keyboard, mask, and format that fit the expected value. Do not force customers to learn an internal format or enter punctuation that the system could add. Keep related information together, avoid unnecessary page changes, and make the next action obvious after a value is accepted.
Design errors for recovery, not blame
Validate at a useful moment
Validation that fires before a customer has finished typing creates noise; validation that waits until after a full-page submission makes the problem hard to locate. Validate when the value can be judged reliably, then identify the field that needs attention. Server-side checks remain necessary even when the interface validates locally.

Describe the actual problem
Replace a generic “invalid information” message with a specific instruction. Tell the customer whether a value is missing, too short, in the wrong format, unavailable for the selected country, or rejected by the payment provider. Place the message next to the relevant field, expose it to assistive technology, and ensure the field’s visual state is not the only signal.

Preserve what the customer already entered
When one field fails, retain valid address, delivery, and payment values. If a server error or timeout occurs, show what happened and provide a retry path without silently clearing the form. A customer should not have to reconstruct a long address because one postal-code check failed.
Make correction possible after navigation
Test back buttons, edits from the review screen, expired sessions, and a browser refresh. Returning to an earlier step should not discard later information without warning. If a value must be re-entered for security reasons, explain that requirement before the customer submits it.
Make payment and order review predictable
Show the order and total at the decision point
Keep the order summary visible or make it easy to reopen while customers enter payment. Show products, quantities, delivery charges, taxes or other applicable charges, discounts, and the final amount before the customer commits. If a shipping choice changes the total, update the summary immediately and explain the change.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Clarify what the primary action does
Use an action label that describes the next event, such as continuing to review or placing the order, rather than an ambiguous label that could mean either. If payment entry is a separate step, tell customers whether selecting the payment action authorizes a charge, saves details for review, or merely advances the form. The interface should never silently place an order before the shopper understands that the commitment is final.
Make card fields resemble the card in the customer’s hand
Detect the card type when possible and format the number as it is commonly printed. Explain where to find the security code for the relevant card type, and use an expiry format customers recognize rather than an unexplained internal convention. Accept sensible variations in spacing and punctuation so formatting does not become a needless failure.
Baymard’s payment-specific guidance covers card recognition, number formatting, security-code location, expiry presentation, order review, and the meaning of the final action. See Payment UX: Research-Backed Standards for Ecommerce Checkouts. Apply those patterns within the limits of your payment provider, fraud controls, legal obligations, and operational process.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Handle payment failures without resetting the purchase
Distinguish a declined payment from a temporary technical problem and from a mismatch in billing details. Tell the customer what can be tried next, such as checking the billing address, using another available method, or retrying after a temporary failure. Preserve the cart and non-sensitive order information. Never imply that a declined authorization means the order definitely failed if your system has not confirmed the transaction state; show the status you actually know and provide a support route when it is ambiguous.
Audit mobile as a separate product
Desktop success does not establish mobile success. Test on actual phones and the operating systems your customers use, not only in a resized browser window. Check the following interactions:
- Whether the correct keyboard opens for email, phone, postal code, card number, and expiry fields.
- Whether focus moves to the next logical field and remains visible when the keyboard appears.
- Whether labels, values, error text, and controls remain readable at the device’s normal text size.
- Whether tap targets are large enough and spaced so adjacent controls are not selected accidentally.
- Whether the order summary, delivery cost, total, and primary action can be found without losing context.
- Whether opening a picker, address suggestion, help text, or authentication screen returns the customer to the correct place.
- Whether slow connections, interrupted payment redirects, orientation changes, and browser back navigation preserve the order state.
Record mobile web and app completion separately. Baymard’s benchmark treats mobile, desktop, and app experiences as distinct contexts, so a combined average can conceal a mobile-only failure.
Choose a checkout structure by evidence, not fashion
There is no source-backed universal winner among one-page, multi-step, and accordion checkout. Compare the alternatives against the work your customers must do and the constraints your business must satisfy.
| Structure | Potential strength | Questions to test |
|---|---|---|
| One-page | All information and the total can be reviewed in one continuous view. | Does the page become long or crowded on a phone? Can a customer locate and correct one error without losing position? |
| Multi-step | Each stage has a smaller, focused task and can communicate progress. | Can customers see what remains, revisit an earlier step, and keep later entries when they go back? |
| Accordion | Sections can stay compact while allowing review of completed information. | Are closed sections understandable, keyboard-accessible, and safe to edit? Does opening one section unexpectedly collapse another or hide the total? |
Evaluate effort to enter and review information, clarity of progress and total cost, error correction without data loss, mobile usability, accessibility in the actual implementation, and fit with fulfillment, payment, compliance, and operational constraints. The Baymard overview treats checkout types, payment methods, form design, and order review as separate research areas; use that distinction to test the whole experience rather than selecting a layout by reputation.

Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Confirm reach. Count affected sessions and identify whether the issue affects desktop, mobile web, app, new customers, returning customers, a country, a payment method, or a delivery option.
- Estimate task severity. A blocked payment, lost form, or unclear total deserves priority over a minor spacing defect. Record whether the customer can recover without support.
- Separate cause from symptom. A high exit rate on the address step may reflect an unavailable delivery area, a confusing label, a slow lookup, or a validation defect. Use observation and logs to distinguish them.
- Prefer low-risk simplification first. Remove an unnecessary field, clarify a label, preserve values after an error, or expose the guest path before redesigning the entire checkout.
- Define the expected behavior. Write the precise state a customer should see for valid input, invalid input, a timeout, a declined payment, a changed price, and a successful order.
- Assign ownership. Some fixes belong to design or content; others require frontend, backend, payment, fraud, fulfillment, analytics, legal, or customer-support work. A visible interface change is incomplete if the underlying state remains ambiguous.
Verify whether a change helped
Set a baseline before release
Capture step completion, field-error frequency, payment failure categories, time to completion, support contacts, and the proportion of orders that reach confirmation. Record the period, device mix, traffic sources, promotions, shipping charges, inventory conditions, and payment-method availability. Without that context, a before-and-after comparison can assign a seasonal or pricing effect to a design change.
Test the intended behavior with users
Give representative participants realistic tasks, including a first purchase, a returning purchase, an address correction, a declined card, and a review-and-edit action. Observe hesitation, misinterpretation, recovery attempts, and whether the participant knows what will happen after the primary action. Ask what they expected before explaining the interface.
Monitor the live flow after release
Watch the same completion and error measures used for the baseline, segmented by device and relevant customer groups. Review support contacts and payment-provider responses for new failure modes. A statistically higher completion rate is useful, but a change that raises completion while increasing duplicate orders, charge disputes, delivery errors, or accessibility complaints is not an unqualified success.
