Reduce crypto-payment fraud risk by combining clear payment approvals, independent verification of wallet addresses, protected staff accounts, and a rehearsed incident process. No single safeguard prevents every scam, and the controls a business must use depend on its role, location, and exposure to virtual-asset services.

Where crypto-payment fraud risk comes from

Fraud involving cryptocurrency is not limited to a technical flaw or a suspicious blockchain transaction. It can begin with an employee being impersonated, an invoice being changed, an urgent payment request, or a message that steers someone to an unexpected link. Fraud proceeds may also be moved through virtual-asset services, wallets, and other channels.

The scale figures available describe different things and should not be treated as a single measure of crypto-payment fraud. In its 2025 statement, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) cited an industry participant’s estimate of approximately USD 51 billion in illicit on-chain activity relating to fraud and scams in 2024; this was an industry estimate, not a FATF measurement. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported that the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received reports of more than USD 388 million in crypto-ATM scam losses in 2025, and cautioned that actual losses may be higher because of underreporting. That figure is about crypto-ATM scams, not all crypto-payment fraud.

Set rules before a payment is requested

Document who can create, review, approve, and release a payment. Define what counts as an unusual or high-risk instruction and require a second authorized reviewer before acting on it. FTC guidance for small businesses recommends clear procedures for approving purchases and invoices and close invoice review.

  • Keep an approved process for new vendors, wallet addresses, payment amounts, and changes to existing instructions.
  • Require a separate review for unusually large payments, changed destination addresses, unexpected payment methods, or requests that bypass normal approval.
  • Give staff a known route to report suspicious instructions without being pressured to resolve them alone.
  • Limit payment and custody permissions to the staff who need them, and review those permissions when roles change.

A second review is useful only if it is independent. Having a colleague approve the same message thread without checking the request through another channel can reproduce the original mistake.

Verify the person and the full wallet address

For a new or changed destination address, verify the instruction through a trusted contact method already on file—not the phone number, link, or reply path contained in the new request. If the instruction appears to come from a supplier, executive, customer, or service provider, contact that person or organization using independently verified details. Caller ID and an existing message thread are not proof of identity.

Inspect the complete destination address in the wallet or signing interface before approving a transfer. The FBI has warned that cryptocurrency token impersonation scams can exploit people who do not fully check addresses; a shortened address may hide differences in its middle characters. Matching only the beginning and end is not enough. Confirm that the asset and network shown in the payment interface also match the approved instruction.

Treat urgency, unexpected payment directions, unsolicited links, requests for credentials, and demands to bypass normal review as warning signs. Pause and verify rather than trying to meet a deadline created by the requester.

Protect the accounts that can move funds

Use multifactor authentication (MFA) on business accounts that control payment, custody, or exchange access, and apply least-privilege access so a compromised staff account has fewer capabilities. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance recommends MFA and identifies a hardware token as one available method.

A hardware security key or other hardware token can add MFA to account sign-in. It protects access to an account; it does not verify that a wallet address is correct, screen blockchain activity, or make a confirmed transfer reversible. Keep payment approval and address-verification controls in place even when MFA is enabled.

Some businesses may also be subject to specific security-program requirements. FTC guidance on the Safeguards Rule describes written, risk-appropriate information-security programs and MFA requirements for covered financial institutions. Do not assume that rule applies to every business accepting cryptocurrency; determine whether the business and its activities are covered.

Match customer and transaction controls to the business role

Crypto-payment obligations vary by jurisdiction and by what the business actually does. A merchant that accepts crypto through a third-party processor may have a different role from a custodian, exchange, or provider that transfers or exchanges virtual assets for customers. FATF standards inform national rules, but they are not a universal legal checklist for every merchant. Check the current law and regulator guidance that apply to the business’s location and activities.

For virtual-asset service providers (VASPs) and other businesses with applicable duties, FATF identifies measures such as customer due diligence, recordkeeping, suspicious transaction reporting, risk assessment, and licensing or registration. The precise legal obligations come from the relevant local rules.

FATF’s 2026 materials flag stablecoins, peer-to-peer activity involving unhosted wallets, offshore VASPs, and decentralized-finance arrangements as areas to assess in light of a business’s model and jurisdiction. These are risk areas, not proof that a particular wallet or transaction is illicit. FATF reported that more than 250 stablecoins were in circulation by mid-2025, with market capitalization exceeding USD 300 billion; those figures describe market context, not fraud losses. In its July 2026 report on decentralized finance, FATF said 132 of 143 responding jurisdictions had not implemented FATF standards in relation to qualifying DeFi arrangements. That finding is limited to the jurisdictions that responded and the report’s qualifying DeFi scope.

Where the business’s risk and obligations justify them, consider customer and wallet screening, transaction monitoring, and a defined process for escalating alerts. These tools can surface risk indicators for review; an alert alone does not establish that funds are criminal. Choose controls that fit the service, transaction types, and legal requirements rather than treating a screening result as a verdict.

Compare providers by control and operational fit

If a processor, custodian, or monitoring provider is part of the payment workflow, assess how its controls fit with yours. These questions help structure a review; they are not a ranking of providers.

  • Control of funds: Who controls private keys, and how are withdrawals authorized?
  • Assets and networks: Which assets and blockchain networks are supported, and how are network-specific payment details checked?
  • Screening and monitoring: What customer, wallet, and transaction screening is available, and how are alerts reviewed and escalated?
  • Security and response: What account-security controls, incident-response procedures, and evidence-retention practices are in place?
  • Legal and geographic fit: What licensing or registration applies, and in which locations does the service operate?
  • Operational fit: Can staff use the workflow reliably, and does it integrate with the business’s approval and recordkeeping processes?

Respond quickly to a suspected scam

  1. Stop further transfers. Escalate the incident through the business’s authorized response process and do not send additional funds to test, unlock, or recover a transaction.
  2. Preserve the evidence. Record the wallet addresses, asset and amount, date and time, transaction hash or transaction ID, messages, domains, and relevant account information. Keep the original communications where possible. IC3 asks victims to provide transaction details including addresses, amount and type, date and time, and transaction ID.
  3. Notify relevant parties. Report promptly to the law-enforcement channel for the business’s jurisdiction and contact any exchange, custodian, or payment provider involved. In the United States, FBI guidance directs victims to IC3 or a local FBI field office; other jurisdictions have their own reporting channels.
  4. Watch for a second scam. Be skeptical of anyone promising to recover funds in exchange for an upfront fee or account access. The FBI warns: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds as this may be another scam.”
