To stop nuisance alerts without missing a real visitor, first identify what is triggering the camera, then switch from general motion to person or vehicle detection when available, tighten the detection zone, lower sensitivity in small increments, and re-aim the camera away from persistent movement or heat. Treat notifications as a separate control from detection and recording, and test every change against both false alarms and missed events.
Why a camera says “motion” when nothing important is happening
Most cameras begin with a broad question: did anything in the scene change? General motion detection can react to moving leaves and branches, rain, snow, insects, shadows, reflections, sunrise or sunset transitions, vehicle headlights, traffic, and people or animals outside the area you actually care about. A camera may also interpret a constant heat source or direct sunlight as a problem when its sensor uses passive infrared (PIR) detection.
False alerts are therefore usually a combination of three factors: the event class the camera is allowed to detect, the part of the image being analyzed, and the sensitivity threshold. Installation angle and the physical environment can overwhelm otherwise sensible settings. App labels, available controls, firmware behavior, and subscription requirements differ by model, so use the instructions for your exact camera rather than assuming that one manufacturer’s setting works the same way on another.

1. Identify the recurring trigger before changing settings
Do not start by dragging sensitivity to its lowest value. First inspect a representative set of alert clips or snapshots, including alerts at different times of day and in different weather. Write down what appears in the frame immediately before each notification.

Common patterns to look for
- Vegetation: leaves, branches, tall grass, or hanging decorations moving in wind.
- Weather: rain, snow, fog, or insects close to the lens.
- Light changes: shadows, reflections, sunrise and sunset, headlights, or a porch light switching on.
- Public activity: a sidewalk, road, parking area, or neighboring property that does not need monitoring.
- Thermal activity: an air-conditioning outlet, dryer vent, heater, grill, or direct sun near a PIR camera.
- Camera movement: a loose mount, vibration, or a cable that moves in the field of view.
TP-Link’s support guidance lists moving foliage, rain, insects, shadows, reflections, changing sunlight, headlights, traffic, and sidewalks as potential causes. If every clip shows the same object or region, fix that source first; changing several controls at once makes it impossible to know which adjustment helped.
2. Choose the narrowest detection type that still matches your goal
General motion is useful when any movement matters, but it is the noisiest option. If your camera can classify events, select only the categories that require an alert.
| Detection choice | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Any motion | You need to know about every movement, including an animal or object the camera may not classify. | Most likely to react to foliage, weather, shadows, reflections, and passing lights. |
| Person | Your priority is people approaching a door, gate, driveway, or other protected area. | May omit animals or unusual movement; classification quality varies by model and conditions. |
| Vehicle | You monitor a driveway, curb, or parking space. | Can still alert on vehicles outside the intended area unless the zone is narrowed. |
| Pet or animal | You need a pet or wildlife event but not every scene change. | Availability and accuracy differ, especially at night or when the subject is partly hidden. |
| Package | You want delivery activity at a supported entry point. | Usually requires a compatible camera, a clear view, and sometimes a subscription. |
Reolink recommends using supported person or vehicle smart detection instead of “any motion” when those are the only events that matter. Roku describes smart detection for people, pets, packages, and vehicles as a separate feature, with subscription availability specified on its support pages. A classification option may appear only after a firmware update or an eligible plan is enabled.
How to change the event class
- Open the camera’s mobile app and select the individual camera, not a global account setting.
- Open the motion, detection, event, or alert settings. The label varies by manufacturer.
- Turn off general or “any motion” detection if the app allows independent event classes.
- Enable only the person, vehicle, pet, or package categories you actually need.
- Save the setting and observe several normal activity periods before making another change.
If selecting a smart category disables continuous recording or changes the clip type, note that behavior before relying on it for security. Detection, recording, and push notifications may be separate controls.
3. Draw a detection zone around the area that matters
A zone tells the camera where movement should count. Roku defines it this way: “A detection zone allows you to create a specific area where your device will detect motion.” Use the smallest practical region that covers the approach you need to monitor, such as the path to a door or the full width of a driveway.

Zone setup procedure
- Open the camera’s live view and enter its detection-zone, activity-zone, motion-zone, or similar editor.
- Remove the default full-frame area if the app starts with the entire image selected.
- Draw a rectangle or polygon around the entrance, gate, vehicle space, or package drop area.
- Exclude sidewalks, roads, neighboring yards, tree canopies, reflective windows, and other known nuisance regions.
- Save the zone, then trigger a legitimate event inside it and an unwanted event outside it to verify the boundary.
Manufacturers do not use zones identically. On one model, a zone may control what is detected; on another, it may control only notifications. Some cameras offer separate zones for different object classes or multiple zones with independent schedules. Confirm in the app whether the zone affects detection, recording, push alerts, or a combination.
When a zone cannot solve the problem
A zone cannot remove a moving shadow, headlight reflection, or branch that lies inside the area you must monitor. In that case, change the camera’s angle or remove the physical source, then redraw the zone. A narrow zone that clips the top of a person’s head or the end of a vehicle can also create inconsistent classifications, so leave enough margin for the complete subject.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Lower sensitivity gradually and check for missed events
Sensitivity is a threshold, not a quality setting. Lowering it can suppress small movements and distant activity, but it can also hide a real person, child, or animal. Use the smallest adjustment that removes the recurring nuisance.
- Record the current sensitivity value or slider position.
- Reduce it by one modest step rather than moving directly to the minimum.
- Allow the camera to operate through the conditions that caused the alerts, such as a windy afternoon or evening headlights.
- Review both unwanted notifications and expected events, including a person walking through the monitored area at different distances.
- Keep the change only if nuisance alerts fall without an unacceptable increase in missed or late detections.
Some apps provide separate sensitivity values for general motion, people, vehicles, or PIR range. Tune the relevant category instead of weakening every detection type. Wyze’s Battery Cam Pro guidance, for example, discusses range, sensitivity, zones, and sensor orientation as separate factors. Its support article explains that “The PIR sensor uses passive infrared technology to detect changes in temperature while radar technology detects the distance of objects in front of the camera to provide precise information about detected motion to reduce unwanted alerts.” That description applies to the Battery Cam Pro guidance, not to every camera design.
5. Reposition and re-aim the camera
Settings cannot fully compensate for a camera pointed at a busy scene. Aim across a walkway rather than directly along it when possible; a person crossing the frame produces a clearer event than distant movement at the end of a corridor. Keep the monitored entrance in the central, unobstructed part of the image and avoid including unnecessary roads, tree branches, reflective surfaces, and bright lights.

Placement checks for ordinary cameras
- Move the camera higher or lower if a railing, shrub, or roof edge repeatedly enters the detection area.
- Change the horizontal angle to exclude a sidewalk or road while retaining the doorway or driveway.
- Secure the mount so wind or vibration cannot shift the image.
- Clean the lens and remove spider webs, water droplets, or nearby objects that insects can approach.
- Check the scene at dawn, dusk, and after dark; a framing that is quiet in daylight may fill with headlights or reflections at night.
Extra checks for PIR cameras
PIR sensors react to changes in infrared energy. Roku advises avoiding constant heat sources and direct sunlight when placing a PIR camera. Do not aim the sensor at an exhaust vent, heater, grill, or sunlit wall that heats and cools repeatedly. If the camera has an adjustable PIR orientation or range, set it to cover the entrance rather than the entire yard.

Repositioning is often the most effective fix for a camera that sees a road, moving foliage, or a heat source that cannot be excluded cleanly.
6. Separate detection, recording, and phone notifications
Many systems have three distinct decisions: whether the camera recognizes an event, whether it records a clip, and whether it sends a push notification. A setting named “motion alerts” may change only the last of these, while a detection-zone setting may change the first two. Before disabling anything, read the setting description and test the result.
A safer notification strategy
- Keep recording enabled for the area and event classes you still need to investigate.
- Disable push notifications for categories that are useful on the timeline but not urgent on your phone.
- Use person-only or vehicle-only notifications when those classifications are reliable for your scene.
- Apply schedules if the app supports them, such as reducing alerts during a period when a household member is regularly in the yard.
- Verify that a notification-only change did not stop recording or cloud storage.
Roku reports that customers who select person-only notifications see about a 70% decrease in notifications. Roku presents this as its customer result; the publication year is not stated, and it is not a universal guarantee for other cameras or scenes.
7. Use a controlled test cycle after every change
False-alert tuning works best as a short experiment rather than a one-time guess. Keep a simple log with the date, weather, camera position, detection class, zone, sensitivity, number of nuisance alerts, and any expected events that were missed.

Test the events that matter
- Walk toward and across the monitored entrance at near, medium, and far distances.
- Move through the edge of the zone to see whether the camera clips or ignores a subject.
- Drive or park in the intended vehicle area if vehicle detection is enabled.
- Observe the camera during wind, rain, insects, changing sunlight, and nighttime lighting when those conditions are common.
- Trigger an event outside the zone to confirm that it no longer produces the alert you are trying to remove.
Change one variable at a time and allow enough time to encounter the original trigger. If you alter the zone, sensitivity, detection class, and camera angle simultaneously, you may reduce alerts but lose the ability to identify the cause or reproduce the result.

Wyze Battery Cam Pro
Wyze’s June 5, 2026 support guidance for the Battery Cam Pro discusses detection range, sensitivity, zones, and sensor orientation. Use those controls together: a zone limits the image area, sensitivity sets the threshold, and sensor orientation determines what the hardware can perceive. The PIR-and-radar behavior described by Wyze is specific to that camera’s design.
Roku Smart Home cameras and video doorbells
Roku’s support instructions cover sensitivity, zones, suggested zones, and PIR placement. The available smart-detection categories and subscription requirements depend on the model. Roku also documents person-only notification behavior and the reported reduction in notification volume; treat that figure as Roku’s own customer result rather than a performance promise.
TP-Link cameras
TP-Link’s guidance, updated April 28, 2026 according to its related support result, focuses on object classification, sensitivity, zones, and placement for rain, snow, insects, and similar triggers. If weather or foliage is the recurring cause, use the classification and zone controls before making a large sensitivity reduction.

Reolink cameras
Reolink recommends smart detection for supported people and vehicles, lower sensitivity, and a changed angle or installation position when general motion produces false alarms. The exact slider names and object classes vary by model and firmware.
What to do when alerts remain after tuning
The alert comes from outside the zone
Check whether the zone controls notifications or only the detection engine. If it controls detection but alerts continue, look for a second zone, a global motion rule, or a doorbell-specific event setting. Re-save the zone and test an event outside its boundary.
The camera misses people after sensitivity is lowered
Raise sensitivity one step, enlarge the zone to include the full approach, and improve the angle so a person presents a larger, clearer target. If smart classification is available, test person detection separately from general motion instead of returning to the most sensitive global setting.

Night alerts are worse than daytime alerts
Inspect headlights, infrared reflections, wet surfaces, and insects near the lens. Re-aim away from reflective surfaces and lights, clean the lens, and test a lower sensitivity only during the night schedule if the app supports separate schedules.
Weather causes repeated alerts
Move the camera under a suitable overhang without blocking its view, keep droplets and insects away from the lens, and exclude moving branches or roof edges with a zone. Classification and sensitivity changes should follow the physical correction, not replace it.
The app offers no useful zones or classifications
Use the best available sensitivity and notification schedule, then prioritize a physical re-aim. If you eventually replace the camera, look for person or vehicle classification, adjustable detection zones, independent notification controls, and flexible mounting. Confirm whether those capabilities require a subscription and whether the camera can record events you choose not to receive as push alerts.
A practical decision order
- Find the trigger: review clips and identify the object, light, weather, traffic, or heat source.
- Remove the source from view: re-aim, remount, clean the lens, or shield a persistent heat or light source.
- Restrict the event class: choose person, vehicle, pet, or package instead of any motion when appropriate.
- Restrict the image area: draw a zone around the entrance, driveway, or other required area.
- Lower sensitivity slightly: test against real arrivals and the original nuisance condition.
- Adjust notifications: keep needed recording while silencing low-priority categories if the system separates those controls.
- Document the result: retain the setting that reduces noise without hiding meaningful activity.
No single setting is universally correct. Detection quality depends on the camera’s sensor, firmware, app, subscription, mounting position, weather, lighting, and the activity around your property. The reliable method is to narrow what counts, narrow where it counts, and verify the result with real events before accepting fewer alerts as an improvement.
