Start by matching the screen’s ordinary brightness to the light around you, then remove reflections and increase text size if reading is difficult. Use Extra dim only when your phone’s normal minimum is still uncomfortable. Dark theme can change the appearance of the interface, but it is not a guarantee that every app or image will be easier on your eyes.
Android menus differ by manufacturer, model and software version. If a path below is missing, open Settings and search for the feature name instead.
What actually causes Android screen discomfort?
Eye strain from phone use is not simply a brightness problem. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) describes digital discomfort as being associated with extended near viewing, reduced blinking, dry eyes, glare and an uncomfortable brightness or contrast balance. A screen that is too dim can make you squint or lean closer, while a bright screen in a dark room can feel glaring. The useful goal is a readable display that fits its surroundings, not the lowest possible brightness.

- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A quick setup that keeps the display readable
- Adjust ordinary brightness first. With the phone in the room where you normally use it, move the brightness slider until text is clear and the screen does not look like a bright light source against the surroundings.
- Remove glare. Turn the phone or move the light source so lamps and windows are not reflected in the glass.
- Make text larger if you are squinting. Use Font size or Display size before lowering brightness further.
- Try dark theme if you prefer its interface appearance. Check the apps you use most; support and readability vary.
- Use Extra dim only after the normal minimum still feels too bright. It lowers the display below the device’s standard minimum.
- Add breaks and deliberate blinking. During long sessions, use the 20-20-20 rule and look away regularly.
This sequence separates three different problems: excessive light, distracting reflections and difficult-to-read content. Changing the right control avoids making the entire display unnecessarily dark.
Set brightness for the room, not to a fixed percentage
Open Quick Settings and adjust the brightness slider while looking at the content you actually read. In a bright room, raising brightness may be necessary to overcome ambient light. In a dark room, lowering it can reduce glare. There is no medically correct percentage that suits every phone, room or person.
AAO guidance recommends matching screen brightness to ambient light, reducing glare and adjusting contrast when needed. Treat that as comfort guidance rather than a diagnostic threshold. If a low setting makes you enlarge text, hold the phone unusually close or strain to distinguish letters, raise brightness slightly and improve legibility instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen automatic brightness helps
Adaptive or automatic brightness can respond as you move between lighting conditions, but it may not choose the level you personally find comfortable. If the screen repeatedly becomes too bright or too dark, adjust it manually in the current room. Keep checking the display after moving from daylight to a dim bedroom, because the same slider position can feel very different in each setting.
Use Extra dim when the normal minimum is still too bright
Google describes Extra dim this way: “To dim your screen beyond your phone’s minimum brightness, use Extra dim.” It is the Android control intended for situations in which the ordinary brightness slider has reached its lowest useful position but the display still feels glaring.
Find Extra dim on most Android phones
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Look for Extra dim and turn it on.
- Adjust its intensity if your device offers a strength control, then return to the screen and check whether text remains easy to read.
Manufacturers can rename or relocate accessibility options. If you do not see the control, use the Settings search field and enter Extra dim. Search results are often more reliable than assuming a menu path from another brand’s phone.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Pixel menu differences by generation
Google’s current display guidance puts Extra dim in the Quick Settings brightness slider on Pixel 10 and later. On Pixel 9 and earlier, Google directs users to the earlier accessibility control. These routes are version-specific; a software update or manufacturer skin can change the location.

How to avoid making the screen too dim
Enable Extra dim only after ordinary brightness is already at its minimum and still uncomfortable. Start with the least additional dimming that solves the glare problem. Read a paragraph, inspect icons and check photos before keeping the setting on. If you begin squinting, increase the intensity threshold, disable Extra dim or add light to the room rather than forcing the display darker.
Dark theme: useful appearance change, not a universal eye-strain cure
Android dark theme changes the system interface and supported apps. It does not recolor media such as videos, and an app can provide its own theme control or decline to follow the system setting. Because coverage is incomplete, dark theme does not guarantee that the total light emitted by everything on screen will be lower.
Turn on the standard dark theme
- Open Settings and search for Dark theme, or open the display-related settings on your phone.
- Choose the standard dark appearance.
- Open the messaging, browser, reading and navigation apps you use most.
- Check that text, controls and images remain easy to distinguish.
Many apps include a separate Theme, Appearance or Display setting. If one app stays light, inspect that app’s settings rather than assuming Android is malfunctioning.
Expanded dark theme on Android 16 and newer
Android 16 and newer include an expanded dark-theme option that can darken interfaces without native dark-theme support. Google cautions that this processing can alter images and make text over images harder to read. Some apps may opt out, and a manufacturer can exclude particular applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Use expanded dark theme only after checking the apps and content that matter to you. If photographs look wrong, controls lose contrast or text over an image becomes difficult to read, return to the standard dark option or disable the expanded treatment for that app when the phone provides that choice. Whether dark or light is more comfortable is personal; compare both with your normal reading tasks instead of treating one as medically superior.

Increase text and display size before dimming further
Small type can create discomfort even when brightness is appropriate. Android provides separate Font size and Display size controls; search Settings for either phrase if you cannot find them in the display menu.
Font size
Font size enlarges supported text while leaving much of the interface layout intact. It does not apply to every app, so verify the screens you read most often. Increase it one step at a time and check whether lines wrap in a way that remains convenient.
Display size
Display size enlarges interface elements such as buttons, icons and some text. It can make controls easier to tap and read, although fewer items may fit on the screen. This is a practical readability adjustment, not a clinical treatment.
Making content larger can let you keep a moderate brightness level instead of lowering the screen until letters blur into the background. If an individual app ignores Android’s size controls, look for an in-app text or accessibility setting.
Reduce reflections and contrast problems
Reflected light can make a correctly adjusted display appear washed out or harsh. Reposition the phone so a window or lamp is not directly behind you in the glass. Change the angle before lowering brightness; eliminating a reflection often preserves more readable contrast.
AAO discusses reducing glare and, when needed, using a matte filter for screens. Applying that general advice to a phone protector is an inference, not a guarantee: a matte anti-glare protector is optional, must match the exact handset model, can change surface texture and may affect perceived sharpness or fingerprint behavior. Use one only if reflections remain a recurring problem after repositioning the phone.

Check contrast after every appearance change
Dark theme, expanded dark theme, wallpaper choices and third-party overlays can all change perceived contrast. Look at ordinary text, small labels, icons and content over images. If any of these become hard to distinguish, favor the setting that preserves legibility, even if it is not the darkest-looking option.
Breaks and blinking are part of the solution
Use the 20-20-20 rule
AAO states: “The best way to protect your eyes against eye strain is to take regular breaks using the ‘20-20-20’ rule: every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.” Set a recurring reminder if you tend to lose track of time while reading or watching video.
Blink deliberately during close viewing
AAO reports that people normally blink about 15 times per minute and that the rate can be cut about in half while staring at screens or doing near work. During a long session, pause, look into the distance and make several relaxed, complete blinks. This addresses the reduced-blinking part of screen discomfort rather than trying to solve every symptom with a display setting.
Refresh dry eyes cautiously
If your eyes feel dry, AAO says artificial tears may refresh them. Choose advice from a qualified clinician or pharmacist for your situation rather than assuming one formulation is suitable for everyone. Persistent pain, significant redness, vision changes or symptoms that do not settle deserve professional assessment.
Choose the control that matches the problem
| Control | What changes | Coverage | Main trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brightness slider | Overall display light output | Whole display | Too low can reduce readability; too high can feel glaring | Match the screen to the surrounding light |
| Extra dim | Light output below the ordinary minimum | Whole display | Can make text and images too dark | When the normal minimum remains uncomfortable |
| Standard dark theme | System interface and supported app appearance | Supported UI and apps; media colors are not changed | Some apps remain light and personal comfort varies | When you prefer a darker interface |
| Expanded dark theme (Android 16 or newer) | Attempts to darken interfaces without native support | Broader but still app- and manufacturer-dependent | Images may look altered and text over images may lose readability | After checking important apps and content |
| Font size | Supported text size | Settings and apps that honor the control | Some apps are unaffected; layouts may wrap differently | Small type is forcing you to squint |
| Display size | Interface scale, including controls and some text | System UI and supported layouts | Fewer items fit on screen | Buttons or overall interface elements are too small |
| Glare reduction | Reflections reaching your eyes | Depends on room position or accessory | A matte protector can change surface appearance and must fit the exact model | Reflections make the screen look harsh or washed out |
Troubleshoot common situations
“The minimum brightness still hurts in bed.”
Turn on Extra dim and keep a small amount of ambient light in the room if possible. Confirm that text remains readable. If you must squint, enlarge text or stop the session rather than reducing the display indefinitely.
“Dark theme made some screens harder to read.”
Disable expanded dark theme first, because it can alter unsupported interfaces and text over images. If the problem remains, use the standard theme or the app’s own appearance setting. Check contrast on the specific screen that caused trouble.

“The screen is dim, but my eyes still feel tired.”
Brightness may not be the main issue. Remove reflections, increase text size, move the phone farther away, take a 20-20-20 break and blink deliberately. Continuing symptoms should be discussed with an eye-care professional.
“My phone does not show Extra dim.”
Search Settings for Extra dim. If it is absent, check for a software update and your manufacturer’s accessibility documentation. Availability and naming differ by device, region and Android version; do not assume another phone’s menu applies to yours.
“A blue-light filter or glasses should solve this, right?”
AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use. Its discussion of possible evening sleep effects is separate from evidence for relieving eye discomfort. Do not treat blue-light glasses as a proven remedy for digital eye strain.
When to stop adjusting settings and seek advice
Display changes are reasonable for temporary discomfort, but ongoing symptoms need more than a darker screen. Contact an ophthalmologist if symptoms continue, recur despite breaks and glare reduction, or interfere with normal activities. Seek prompt medical care for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, marked swelling or other urgent changes.
For routine use, the most sustainable combination is a readable brightness level, controlled reflections, text large enough to see comfortably, breaks from close focus and regular blinking. Extra dim is a targeted final step, not the default setting for every Android user.
