If Night Light’s warmer screen still feels uncomfortable, start with Extra dim to reduce brightness below the phone’s ordinary minimum. Then try Dark theme, an app’s own dark setting, text and display adjustments, or Reading mode for supported content. Owners of certain Pixel 10 models can also test Comfort View, an adjustable color filter.

These controls are practical comfort experiments, not proven treatments for an eye condition. Android menus differ by version, manufacturer, market, app, and model, so use the closest label shown on your phone and reassess readability after each change.

Choose the control that matches the problem

Night Light changes the display toward warmer red or amber tones and can be scheduled. Google says this may make dim-light use easier and notes that blue light can make it harder to fall asleep, but its support information does not establish that Night Light or any other setting treats eye strain. If the remaining problem is simply too much light, changing color alone may not be enough.

Option What it changes Where it works Eligibility Trade-offs
Extra dim Reduces brightness below the normal minimum Phone display and system interface Availability and menu location vary; Pixel 10 and later have it in the brightness Quick Settings control, while Pixel 9 and earlier use Accessibility settings Very low brightness can make text harder to see in a bright room
Dark theme Uses dark colors for interfaces Android system screens and apps that support dark theme Android devices with the feature; exact path varies Unsupported apps can remain bright; some colors and contrast relationships change
Expanded dark theme Attempts to darken more apps without native dark-theme support Many apps on supported Android 16 or later devices Android 16 and later; an app or device can be unavailable or opted out Images may change and text inside images can become difficult to read
Text and display controls Changes text size and other display presentation settings System interface and apps that honor Android settings Names and navigation vary by device and market Larger text can alter layouts or cause more scrolling
Reading mode Reformats or adjusts supported reading content Eligible web pages or reading content Supported content and devices only Not every page, app, or document is compatible
Comfort View Applies an adjustable color filter Pixel display Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold Color appearance changes; intensity must be balanced against legibility
Color inversion Inverts display colors System, apps, and media Accessibility feature where available Photos, video, illustrations, and other media can look wrong; it is not the first choice for ordinary brightness complaints

The sequence below starts with the least disruptive adjustment for an overly bright screen and then addresses color, text, and app-specific problems.

1. Lower brightness with Extra dim

Extra dim is the most direct next step when the regular brightness slider is already at its lowest useful position. It lowers the display beyond the ordinary minimum rather than merely changing the color temperature.

Pixel 10 and later

  1. Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen. On supported Pixel 10 and later phones, inspect the brightness control.
  2. Use the Extra dim control associated with the brightness slider and lower the display until white backgrounds no longer feel glaring.
  3. Close Quick Settings and check a normal task such as reading a message. If letters look muddy, raise the level slightly rather than compensating with an extreme text size.

Google documents Extra dim as part of the brightness Quick Settings control on Pixel 10 and later. The exact control appearance can change with the phone’s software layout.

Pixel 9 and earlier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Look for the Extra dim option and enable or adjust it.
  4. Return to the content that bothered you and make a small change at a time.

Google directs Pixel 9 and earlier users to Accessibility for this feature. A non-Pixel phone may place it under Display, Accessibility, Quick Settings, or a manufacturer-specific menu, and may use a different name. Search Settings for “Extra dim” if the control is not visible.

Keep Extra dim usable

  • Test it in the room where you normally use the phone. A setting that is comfortable in a dark bedroom may be too dim in daylight.
  • Check both black text on white and white text on dark backgrounds. Comfort on one type of screen does not guarantee comfortable contrast everywhere.
  • If you need to reach it frequently, add the control to Quick Settings when your phone offers an edit option. The available tile and ordering controls depend on the manufacturer.

2. Turn on Dark theme, then check each bright app

Dark theme changes interface colors rather than reducing the panel’s physical brightness. It can make large white areas less prominent, but it is not universal: Android system screens and only apps that support dark theme will change automatically.

Enable the system theme

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look under Display for Dark theme. On some devices, the control is under Accessibility instead.
  3. Turn it on and open several screens you use often, including Settings, messaging, a browser, and any reading app.

Menu names and locations vary by Android version, manufacturer, and market. If you do not see Dark theme in either location, use Settings search for “dark” or consult the phone’s built-in help.

Set an individual app to dark

An app can ignore the system choice or offer more than one appearance mode. Open that app’s own settings and look for Display, Theme, Appearance, or a similar label. Select its dark option if available, then revisit content with images, charts, or colored text to make sure it remains readable.

Google’s app guidance explains that Dark theme works only in apps that support it. A bright app is therefore not evidence that your phone’s system setting failed; it may simply lack a compatible theme or require its own switch.

Use Expanded dark theme on Android 16 and later

Android 16 and later add an Expanded dark-theme option intended to darken many apps that do not provide a native dark theme. It is a broader transformation than the standard mode, so inspect the result instead of assuming every screen will improve.

  • Open the Dark theme settings and choose the Expanded option when your device exposes it.
  • Review image-heavy pages, shopping photographs, maps, charts, and screenshots. The transformation can alter images.
  • Read text embedded in images, such as labels in diagrams or scanned documents. Google warns that this text can become harder to read.
  • If a particular app looks worse, switch back to Standard or exclude that app when the device provides an app-exclusion control.

Expanded mode may be unavailable on a particular device or app, and some apps can opt out. Treat it as a per-app readability test, not a guarantee of a fully dark interface.

3. Increase legibility with text and display controls

Brightness is not the only source of visual effort. Small type, cramped spacing, or low-contrast controls can make you move the phone closer or stare longer. Android’s text and display accessibility controls let you adjust presentation for supported parts of the interface.

Adjust text or display size

  1. Open Settings and enter the accessibility area or display settings shown on your phone.
  2. Choose the text-size or display-size control. Google’s help uses the general category “text and display settings”; the precise label can differ.
  3. Move the slider one step, then check a long message, a settings list, and a web page.
  4. Stop when characters are clear without forcing a layout that makes every line wrap awkwardly.

Some apps honor Android’s size settings while others use their own typography. If one app remains tiny or crowded, check its own settings before making the entire system unusually large.

Try Reading mode for eligible content

Reading mode is intended for supported reading content and can change how eligible web pages are presented. It is not a universal overlay for every app, PDF, image, or social-media screen.

  1. Install or enable Reading mode if your device offers it through Accessibility.
  2. Follow the on-screen setup, including any shortcut or permission the feature requests.
  3. Open an eligible article or other supported reading page and invoke the Reading mode shortcut.
  4. Adjust the available text presentation controls and compare the result with the original page.

Google notes that accessibility feature names and navigation can vary by market and device. If Reading mode does not appear for a page, that page is likely outside the supported content types; use the page’s own text-size or theme controls instead.

4. Test Comfort View on supported Pixel models

Comfort View is a separate Pixel color-filter feature, not another name for Night Light. Google lists support for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Choose adaptive or manual intensity

  1. Open the display or accessibility settings on a listed Pixel model and select Comfort View.
  2. Try the adaptive intensity option if you want the phone to vary the filter automatically.
  3. For a consistent result, choose manual intensity and move the control gradually.
  4. Check skin tones, photographs, maps, and any work that depends on accurate color before settling on a level.

A stronger filter changes more of the screen’s color balance. If white text or colored symbols become less distinct, reduce the intensity even if the warmer appearance initially feels soothing. Comfort View’s availability is model-specific; do not assume that a Pixel model outside Google’s list has it.

5. Treat color inversion as a special-purpose option

Color inversion is separate from both Dark theme and Night Light. It reverses display colors and can apply to media as well as interface elements. That can damage the appearance of photographs, video, illustrations, and color-coded information.

Use it only when you have a specific accessibility reason to invert colors and have checked the content you need. For an ordinary complaint that the lowest brightness is still too intense, Extra dim is the more targeted first experiment, followed by Dark theme or text adjustments.

A practical setup sequence

Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to identify what actually helps. Use this order when Night Light is already enabled but the screen remains uncomfortable:

  1. Confirm the baseline. Set ordinary brightness to a level you can use safely, keep Night Light at your preferred schedule or intensity, and note which screens cause trouble.
  2. Apply Extra dim. Use the Pixel path for your generation or search Settings on another manufacturer’s phone. Test a white document, a dark-themed app, and a photo.
  3. Add Dark theme. Enable the system setting, then configure bright apps individually under their Display or Theme controls.
  4. Evaluate Expanded mode. On Android 16 or later, try Expanded only if unsupported apps remain bright. Exclude or revert any app whose images or image-based text become confusing.
  5. Improve text presentation. Adjust text or display size in small increments and use Reading mode only on supported reading pages.
  6. Check Comfort View. If you own one of the listed Pixel 10 models, compare adaptive and manual intensity without assuming a stronger filter is better.
  7. Recheck your normal routine. Read for several minutes in the lighting where you use the phone, switch between the apps you actually need, and retain only settings that preserve clear, comfortable information.

What to do when a setting does not appear or does not work

The menu is missing

First search Settings for the feature name. Google explicitly warns that accessibility names and navigation differ by market and device. A manufacturer may expose Extra dim as a Quick Settings tile, place Dark theme under Accessibility, or omit a model-specific feature entirely. Confirm the Android version and phone model before assuming a control is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only some apps changed

That is expected for standard Dark theme. Open the unchanged app’s own Display, Theme, or Appearance settings. On Android 16 or later, Expanded mode may reach more apps, but an app can be unavailable or opted out.

Expanded mode makes a page worse

Return to Standard mode or exclude the affected app if that control is offered. Pay particular attention to photographs, diagrams, maps, and text embedded in images, because those elements can lose their intended colors or contrast.

Reading mode will not start

Try a conventional web article rather than a page dominated by a custom reader, image, document viewer, or app-controlled feed. Reading mode is limited to supported content, so failure on one page does not indicate a phone fault.

The screen is comfortable but text is unclear

Raise Extra dim slightly, increase text or display size one step, or reduce a color-filter intensity. Do not solve a contrast problem by continually darkening the screen; the goal is readable content at a brightness you can tolerate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Colors look wrong

Check whether Comfort View, Night Light, Expanded dark theme, or color inversion is active. Disable or soften the most recent change and inspect a photo or other color-sensitive content. Color inversion is especially likely to alter media dramatically.

How to reassess comfort responsibly

Visual comfort is subjective and depends on room lighting, viewing distance, text size, and the type of content on screen. Keep notes about which combination helps during reading, messaging, or nighttime use, rather than copying someone else’s exact intensity.

The official Android and Pixel documentation describes how these controls work, but it does not provide a clinical comparison showing that Extra dim, Dark theme, Reading mode, Comfort View, blue-light glasses, screen protectors, or another accessory prevents or treats eye strain. Use the settings as reversible comfort adjustments. If discomfort persists, is severe, or comes with vision changes, seek advice from a qualified eye-care professional instead of relying on a display filter.
