A diesel particulate filter (DPF) can cut particulate matter (PM) from a compatible diesel generator by about 85–90% or more, but it is not a universal bolt-on device. The filter must be verified for the generator’s engine family, power range, exhaust flow, fuel and temperature profile. It also needs regeneration, backpressure monitoring and scheduled ash cleaning. A DPF generally does not reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx); controlling NOx requires a different, separately verified technology.
The safest retrofit process is to inspect and repair the engine, measure exhaust temperatures under representative loads, match those results to a verification letter, then have a qualified installer size and commission the system. The sections below explain how to determine fit, what reductions to expect, how regeneration works and how to maintain the filter.
What a diesel particulate filter does
A DPF is an exhaust after-treatment device installed in the exhaust stream between the diesel engine and the outlet. Its porous substrate allows exhaust gas to pass while trapping soot and other solid particles. The accumulated soot must then be oxidized during regeneration. Non-combustible material, primarily ash from lubricating oil and fuel additives, remains in the filter and has to be removed during periodic cleaning.

Depending on the verified system and operating conditions, a DPF can also reduce some hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), but the applicable verification letter—not a generic product claim—defines the recognized reductions.

PM is the main target
Fine diesel particles contribute to local air pollution and can be emitted continuously when a generator runs. A properly matched filter captures most of that engine-out PM before it leaves the stack. EPA states that verified DPFs typically reduce PM by 85–90% or more, based on its 2010 general information bulletin. The percentage applies only when the engine, fuel, exhaust temperature and other criteria specified for that verification are met.
A DPF is not a NOx-control device
DPFs generally do not reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). NOx forms mainly during combustion, whereas a DPF removes solid particles in the exhaust. If a permit or local rule requires NOx reduction, the generator may need a separate verified NOx-control technology, such as a system specifically approved for that engine and duty cycle. Do not treat a PM-reduction percentage as evidence of NOx compliance.
How much PM reduction can you expect?
Published percentages are useful for screening options, but they cannot be transferred from one engine to another. EPA verification applies to a defined engine family, power range, fuel specification and operating envelope. The following examples illustrate the range of verified claims cited by EPA.
| Verified example | PM reduction | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| EPA typical verified DPF range (2010) | 85–90% or more | General EPA statement for verified DPFs; the actual value depends on the approved engine, fuel and temperature criteria. |
| Donaldson NR-LNF example | 90% | EPA-listed verified result for the specified application; it is not a universal rating for every generator. |
| Caterpillar DPF example | 89% | EPA-listed verified result for the specified application; compatibility and operating limits still apply. |
These are control efficiencies, not a promise that every generator will emit exactly 10–15% of its original PM. Engine condition, load, fuel sulfur, oil consumption, exhaust temperature and installation quality all affect performance. Ask the supplier or installer for the complete EPA or California Air Resources Board (CARB) verification document and confirm that your exact engine family and operating conditions appear in it.

Will a DPF work on your generator?
Compatibility is an application-specific engineering decision. Before buying a filter, assemble the information below and compare it with the candidate system’s verification letter and installation manual.
Engine and generator identity
- Generator make and model.
- Engine make, model, engine family and model year.
- Rated output in kW or horsepower, plus the normal operating load range.
- Duty cycle: standby, prime, continuous or a mixed profile.
- Engine-out PM, fuel consumption and lubricating-oil consumption, if available.
Exhaust and installation data
- Exhaust pipe diameter, routing and available straight-run length.
- Exhaust mass flow or flow range at the intended loads.
- Measured exhaust temperatures at low, typical and high load.
- Available space, service access, structural support and clearances from combustible materials.
- Vibration levels and the location where a backpressure sensor and warning indicator can be installed.
Fuel and oil requirements
Fuel sulfur and lubricating-oil formulation affect both regeneration and ash accumulation. The EPA-listed Donaldson example requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel at 15 parts per million or less; another verified system may specify a different limit. Confirm the exact fuel sulfur maximum and oil requirements for the filter you are considering. A system approved for one fuel specification is not automatically approved for another.
Operating profile
Generators that run for long periods at light load may not produce enough exhaust heat for passive regeneration. A standby set that operates only during short outages may accumulate soot more slowly, but it can still face a regeneration problem if each run ends before the filter reaches its required conditions. Use measured data from representative operation rather than a nameplate temperature or an assumption based on generator size.
How regeneration works
Regeneration is the process that oxidizes soot trapped in the filter. The filter’s verification and installation documents specify whether regeneration is passive, active or a combination.

Passive regeneration
Passive systems rely on the exhaust reaching the temperature and chemical conditions needed to burn soot as the generator operates. The required temperature profile is product-specific and is often expressed as a minimum temperature sustained for a defined portion of operation. There is no single temperature that applies to every DPF. Obtain the threshold and duration from the candidate filter’s verification letter or installation manual, then compare it with logged generator data.
Active regeneration
Active systems use a specified method to raise exhaust temperature or otherwise initiate soot oxidation when normal operation is insufficient. The method may involve an auxiliary heat source, an approved fuel-dosing strategy or a controlled operating procedure. The exact hardware, controls, interlocks and fuel requirements must come from the manufacturer’s instructions. Never improvise a fuel-dosing or heat source arrangement on a stationary generator.
Why temperature logging matters
Temperature at the engine outlet can differ substantially from temperature at the filter inlet, especially when the exhaust is long, insulated differently or exposed to cold ambient conditions. Log the temperature at the proposed filter location over the full load range and during the longest normal run. Include cold starts, warm-up, low-load operation and any automatic load-bank tests. Compare the record with the filter’s required regeneration profile before installation.

Step-by-step DPF retrofit process
- Record the generator data. Write down the generator and engine make, model, engine family, model year, rated kW or horsepower, exhaust dimensions and intended duty cycle. Include the site’s jurisdiction because local acceptance may depend on EPA, CARB or another authority’s rules.
- Inspect the engine and review maintenance records. Check injectors, turbocharging, air intake, cooling, exhaust leaks, crankcase ventilation, fuel system condition and oil consumption. EPA’s 2010 installation bulletin recommends a thorough engine inspection before installing a retrofit. Excessive blowby can indicate engine wear; repair that condition rather than using the DPF to mask it.
- Measure representative exhaust temperatures and loads. Log temperatures at the proposed filter inlet while the generator operates at typical, minimum and maximum loads. Record ambient conditions and run duration. Include automatic exercise cycles if the set is used for standby power.
- Match the candidate filter to the verification criteria. Compare engine family, rated power, exhaust flow, duty cycle, engine-out PM, temperature profile, fuel sulfur and oil requirements with the verification letter. Reject a system if a required criterion is missing or outside the approved range.
- Confirm fuel and lubricant compatibility. Verify the sulfur limit and oil specification in writing. For example, the EPA-listed Donaldson NR-LNF application requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel of 15 ppm or less. Other systems may impose different limits, so do not generalize this value.
- Have a qualified installer design the mounting. The installer should size the filter, support its weight, account for thermal expansion and vibration, maintain service clearances, protect nearby materials and preserve safe exhaust routing. The design must keep backpressure within the engine and filter limits.
- Install monitoring and operator notification. Fit the required backpressure sensor or gauge and a visible warning indicator at the control panel or another location operators can see. Configure alarm levels exactly as specified by the filter and engine manufacturers.
- Commission and document the system. Record baseline engine data, installation dimensions, sensor settings, initial backpressure, exhaust temperatures and the filter serial number. Verify that alarms operate and that the generator reaches the required regeneration conditions under normal loads.
- Set the inspection and cleaning plan. Add soot-loading, backpressure and ash-cleaning checks to the generator’s maintenance calendar. Give operators written instructions for warning conditions, regeneration procedures and shutdown decisions.
Maintenance, ash cleaning and operating discipline
A DPF cannot compensate for an unhealthy engine. Excess fuel, poor combustion, worn injectors, turbocharger faults or high oil consumption can load the filter rapidly and raise backpressure. Correct the engine fault first; repeatedly cleaning or regenerating a filter without repairing the cause will shorten service life and may damage the substrate.

Monitor backpressure
As soot and ash accumulate, exhaust restriction rises. A backpressure monitor provides an early warning before restriction affects engine performance. Establish a baseline after commissioning and trend readings at comparable loads. A sudden increase suggests excessive soot production, failed regeneration, a damaged sensor or a physical blockage. Follow the manufacturer’s alarm limits rather than creating a generic threshold.
Follow the approved regeneration procedure
Passive systems need sufficient temperature and operating time. Active systems need the specified control sequence and safety interlocks. Operators should know whether a warning means “continue operating to complete regeneration,” “run an approved load-bank procedure,” or “shut down and call service.” Do not defeat an alarm, bypass a temperature sensor or force regeneration in an area where the elevated exhaust temperature creates a fire hazard.
Schedule ash removal
Soot can burn during regeneration; ash cannot. Ash occupies filter volume and increases restriction, so it must be removed at the interval specified by the filter manufacturer. The correct interval depends on oil consumption, oil ash content, fuel quality, operating hours and the filter’s capacity. A calendar interval copied from another generator is not reliable. Use the product-specific schedule and backpressure trend.
Inspect the physical installation
- Look for cracks, loose clamps, damaged insulation and exhaust leaks.
- Check supports and flexible connections for vibration fatigue.
- Verify that the warning light, pressure lines and temperature sensors remain secure and readable.
- Confirm that service access has not been blocked by later equipment changes.
- Inspect surrounding surfaces for heat damage or soot deposits.
Comparing verified DPF options
Two filters with similar headline PM percentages may be unsuitable for the same generator. Compare the complete application envelope, not just the reduction number.

| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Verified pollutants | What PM, HC and CO reductions are verified for the exact engine family and power range? If a value is not stated in the verification document, treat it as not stated rather than assuming a typical result. |
| Engine and power range | Does the approval list your engine family, model year and rated output? |
| Exhaust flow | Is the filter sized for the generator’s minimum and maximum exhaust mass flow? |
| Temperature profile | What minimum temperature, duration and location are required for passive regeneration? |
| Regeneration method | Is regeneration passive, active or combined, and what controls or fuel are required? |
| Fuel sulfur and oil | What maximum sulfur content and lubrication-oil specification are permitted? |
| Backpressure monitoring | What sensor, gauge, alarm and operator notification are mandatory? |
| Ash cleaning | What cleaning interval or backpressure trigger is specified, and what cleaning method preserves the substrate? |
| Mechanical installation | What are the filter dimensions, weight, vibration rating, clearances and support requirements? |
| Regulatory acceptance | Is the system verified by EPA, CARB or another authority recognized at your site? |
EPA’s verified Donaldson and Caterpillar examples demonstrate why the 90% and 89% figures cannot be moved from one engine to another without checking the underlying criteria. A qualified installer should retain the verification letter, drawings, commissioning readings and maintenance records for inspection or permitting.
Troubleshooting common DPF problems
| Symptom | Likely causes | First actions |
|---|---|---|
| Backpressure rises quickly | Failed regeneration, excessive engine-out PM, high oil consumption, ash loading or a blocked exhaust. | Check temperature history and alarms; inspect the engine for fueling, turbocharger and oil-consumption faults; do not continue operation beyond the manufacturer’s limit. |
| Regeneration never completes | Loads are too light, runs are too short, exhaust temperatures are below the approved profile or an active-regeneration component has failed. | Compare logged temperatures and run duration with the verification requirements; use only the approved load or active-regeneration procedure. |
| Frequent warning alarms | Incorrect sensor calibration, damaged pressure lines, a leaking exhaust, unsuitable filter sizing or deteriorating engine condition. | Verify sensors and connections, inspect for leaks and compare flow and power data with the filter approval. |
| Engine loses power or smokes | Excessive restriction, poor combustion, injector or turbocharger problems, or an exhaust blockage. | Reduce load or shut down according to the engine manual, then have a qualified technician diagnose both the engine and DPF. |
| Filter fills with ash sooner than expected | High lubricating-oil consumption, oil with excessive ash content, contaminated fuel or an interval copied from another application. | Repair the underlying engine issue, confirm the approved oil and fuel, and arrange manufacturer-specified ash cleaning. |
Safety and regulatory considerations
A DPF can reach temperatures high enough to ignite nearby material, especially during active regeneration or a high-load passive event. Maintain the clearances and insulation specified by the installer, keep combustible storage away from the exhaust and ensure the outlet does not discharge toward people, air intakes or building openings. Site personnel need a visible warning and a written response procedure.
Use recognized verification programs when compliance matters. EPA and CARB verification programs define the engines, fuels, operating conditions and reductions for approved retrofit technologies. A product advertised as “universal” is not automatically verified, compatible or accepted by the authority issuing your permit. Confirm local rules before purchase, particularly for emergency generators, nonroad engines and installations in California or other jurisdictions with their own requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the retrofit costs beyond the filter
The filter itself is only one part of the project. Budget and plan for an application survey, exhaust-temperature logging, engineering and mounting hardware, insulation or structural supports, backpressure and temperature instrumentation, control-panel warning integration, commissioning and future ash cleaning. The required work varies with generator size, access, exhaust routing, operating profile and local inspection rules.
Installation and ongoing service are specialist activities because incorrect sizing or missing monitoring can create an emissions, reliability and safety problem. Obtain an itemized scope that identifies the verified filter model, approved engine range, regeneration method, sensors, alarm settings, commissioning measurements and cleaning responsibility. Avoid selecting solely on the lowest purchase price or the highest unqualified PM percentage.
DPF retrofit decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact engine family, model year and rated power?
- Is the candidate filter verified for that engine and operating range?
- Have you measured exhaust temperatures at the proposed filter location?
- Can the generator meet the required passive-regeneration profile, or is an approved active system available?
- Does the fuel meet the specified sulfur limit, and does the oil meet the specified formulation?
- Has the engine been inspected for blowby, injector, turbocharger, intake, exhaust-leak and oil-consumption problems?
- Will the installation include backpressure monitoring and a visible operator warning?
- Are there adequate clearances, supports, service access and fire-safety controls?
- Do you have a documented ash-cleaning and inspection schedule?
- Will the local permitting authority accept the EPA, CARB or other applicable verification?
If any answer is no or unknown, pause the purchase and resolve that item with the filter manufacturer, engine representative, permitting authority or a qualified installer. A properly matched and maintained DPF can deliver substantial PM reduction; an incompatible filter can increase restriction, fail to regenerate and compromise generator reliability.
