Barracuda reports an average of 20 security vulnerabilities per web application in scans it conducted over five months in 2026. That is a vendor-reported finding from hundreds of scans—not a count that applies to every website or a verified estimate for all web applications. The report also says seven vulnerability categories made up approximately 90% of the detected flaws, with information disclosure and brand impersonation or spoofing the largest categories.

What Barracuda’s “20 vulnerabilities” figure means

Barracuda’s Application Security Insight data showed an average of 20 vulnerabilities per web application across hundreds of scans conducted over five months in 2026. The result is a scan finding, not proof that a typical application everywhere has exactly 20 vulnerabilities. The accessible reports do not disclose the precise sample size, how applications were selected, whether each scan covered a unique application, or how findings were deduplicated and rated by severity. They also do not provide independent validation of the estimate.

The count alone does not indicate how many findings are exploitable, how serious they are, or which applications face the greatest risk. Barracuda’s Jesus Cordero-Guzman notes that attackers may combine lower- and medium-risk issues, but the scan summary does not establish that the detected issues were exploited. Compare the figure with another statistic only after checking what was scanned, how findings were counted, and how risk was classified.

Which vulnerability categories appeared most often?

Barracuda reported that seven categories accounted for approximately 90% of the detected vulnerabilities. The proportions below are shares of flaws in its analyzed scans, not universal rates across web applications. The rounded category figures total 89%, consistent with the report’s approximate 90% total.

Category Share of detected flaws What it can involve
Information disclosure or reconnaissance 25% Exposed system details, domains, routes, hidden pages, or services that can help map an environment and locate weak points.
Brand impersonation and spoofing 23% Weaknesses that can make it easier to imitate a trusted site or brand and deceive users into revealing credentials or sensitive information.
Client-side attacks 14% Problems in how a page displays or executes content, including possible script injection such as cross-site scripting.
Data exposure 10% Unnecessary exposure of personal data, tokens, private content, secrets, or business information through pages, APIs, logs, cookies, tracking scripts, or misconfigured responses.
Weak or missing encryption 6% Transport-security weaknesses that may expose credentials or session tokens or permit traffic alteration.
Outdated software or insecure configurations 6% Unpatched components or unsafe settings that can make known attack techniques more useful.
Session and authentication weaknesses 5% Inadequate session handling or protection for cookies and credentials that may increase account-takeover risk.

Why the leading categories matter

Information disclosure: reduce what an attacker can map

Unnecessary metadata, open directory listings, exposed routes, and publicly reachable internal endpoints can reveal how an application is organized. That information does not necessarily provide access by itself, but it can help an attacker identify where to probe. Review what the application and its infrastructure reveal publicly, and restrict sensitive endpoints.

Brand impersonation: protect the path users trust

Cloned pages, malicious redirects, and convincing phishing messages can misuse a trusted name or visual identity to trick users. Review domains and redirects associated with the service, and make it easier for users to distinguish legitimate sign-in and transaction pages from imitations.

Client-side attacks: validate content rendered in the browser

When untrusted input is handled unsafely, script injection can alter visible content or controls and may expose browser-held information such as cookies. Treat browser-facing code and user-supplied content as part of the security boundary; test how input is validated and rendered.

Data exposure: check every place information can escape

Sensitive material may leak through more than the main page: APIs, logs, cookies, tracking scripts, and response configuration can all matter. Check whether each channel returns only the data it needs to, and avoid exposing secrets or tokens to clients that do not require them.

Encryption, updates, and account controls

For transport security, Barracuda recommends HTTPS throughout, modern TLS, valid certificates, HSTS, and removal of mixed content; DNSSEC may be appropriate for a domain’s DNS protections. For software and configuration, maintain a patching process, harden settings, remove obsolete components, and track known exploited vulnerabilities. For accounts and sessions, use appropriate Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite cookie attributes, rotate tokens, set session lifetimes deliberately, require reauthentication for sensitive actions, and apply multifactor authentication consistently.

How to reduce risk in a real application

  1. Build an inventory and scan routinely. Know which applications, APIs, frameworks, dependencies, and exposed services your organization operates. Use periodic or continuous scanning suited to the application and its change rate.
  2. Triage findings by risk, not headline count. Consider severity, exploitability, external exposure, and business impact. A raw total of findings does not tell a team what to fix first.
  3. Remove unnecessary exposure. Review metadata, directory listings, public routes, sensitive endpoints, API responses, logs, cookies, and tracking scripts for information or data that should not be exposed.
  4. Patch and harden. Keep frameworks and dependencies current, remove obsolete software, and track vulnerabilities known to be exploited. Review configuration as well as code.
  5. Verify browser, transport, and identity protections. Check HTTPS and TLS settings, mixed content, client-side behavior, authentication flows, cookie attributes, session duration, and token handling.
  6. Confirm fixes and monitor. Re-test remediated findings and monitor for suspicious activity. A scan identifies potential weaknesses; a verification and remediation workflow helps establish whether they were addressed.

How much confidence should you place in the finding?

The result is useful as a reminder that web applications can accumulate multiple kinds of weaknesses, but it is not a population-wide benchmark. Barracuda’s published material describes hundreds of scans over five months in 2026; it does not provide a detailed sampling frame, a complete technical methodology, or independent replication. It also does not show that the recommended controls were tested as an intervention in this analysis. Treat the category shares as Barracuda’s scan taxonomy and use them to prompt a review, not as a substitute for assessing the applications you operate.
