The most effective plan is to identify likely sources, stop the child’s contact with them, and involve the right professional when testing or cleanup is needed. Lead exposure deserves prompt attention because no safe blood lead level has been identified and many children have no symptoms. Mercury exposure is usually reduced by choosing lower-mercury fish, handling products safely, and responding correctly to spills.
This U.S.-focused guide covers paint and dust, tap water, soil, fish, household chemicals, pesticides, radon, remodeling, and take-home exposure from work or hobbies. Local water utilities, health departments, fish advisories, private-well programs, and service availability differ by location.
Start with a source-and-contact plan
Exposure is the combination of a contaminant’s source, how it reaches a child, and the child’s behavior. Children crawl and play close to floors, touch dusty surfaces, and put hands and objects in their mouths. Formula-fed infants consume more water relative to body size than adults, so drinking-water contaminants can represent a larger exposure per unit of body weight.
Recommended Free Tools
| Possible source | How contact happens | First proportionate action |
|---|---|---|
| Paint, dust, or soil | Hand-to-mouth behavior, breathing dust, tracking soil indoors | Keep children away from deteriorated paint; damp-wipe hard surfaces and wet-mop floors; arrange a professional evaluation in older housing |
| Tap water or plumbing | Drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or preparing formula | Ask the water utility about service lines and testing; use cold water for consumption and formula |
| Fish | Eating fish with higher mercury concentrations | Follow FDA/EPA species and portion advice and local advisories for recreational catches |
| Cleaners and pesticides | Swallowing, skin contact, or inhaling vapors and residues | Keep products secured in original containers, follow labels, ventilate, and never mix cleaners |
| Work or hobbies | Dust carried home on clothing, footwear, skin, hair, or equipment | Use workplace or hobby controls and change, wash, or isolate contaminated clothing and equipment before contact with children |
| Radon | Long-term inhalation of radioactive gas indoors | Test the home; EPA recommends fixing levels at or above 4 pCi/L |
Do not try to solve every possible hazard at once. Begin with a child’s current routine: where the child plays, what the child eats and drinks, whether paint is damaged, whether work or remodeling is occurring, and whether a spill has happened.

Separate finding a source from reducing contact. A laboratory water sample, paint inspection, or radon kit can answer a measurement question, but none is a substitute for immediately blocking a child from peeling paint, a spill, or a treatment area. Conversely, cleaning alone cannot establish whether lead is present or whether a child’s blood contains lead.
Lead in paint, dust, soil, and household items
Why older housing needs special care
In the United States, homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. EPA has reported that approximately three-quarters of U.S. homes built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint; that figure comes from an EPA page published around 2013 and describes the presence of paint, not the condition of every surface. CDC reported approximately 29 million U.S. housing units with lead-paint hazards, including about 2.6 million homes where young children live, on a page dated August 25, 2026. These are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Lead dust can form when paint peels, flakes, or deteriorates, and when painted windows, doors, stairs, or other friction surfaces rub. Renovation, repair, and window replacement can create much more dust. Soil near older painted buildings, roads, or industrial sources can be tracked inside. Lead may also occur in some consumer goods, foods or remedies, and dust brought home from work or hobbies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Safer routine cleaning
- Damp-wipe hard surfaces regularly and wet-mop floors, especially where children crawl or play.
- Wash children’s hands frequently and clean toys that are often handled or mouthed.
- Keep children away from peeling paint, visible chips, and painted surfaces they chew.
- Remove shoes at the entrance and prevent soil from being tracked into play areas.
- Do not dry-sweep suspected lead dust. Do not sand, scrape, or casually disturb old paint.
Damp cleaning manages dust; it does not make damaged paint or a renovation project safe by itself. Put any collected debris or cleaning materials out of children’s reach and follow local disposal instructions.
Pay particular attention to window wells, sills, door thresholds, stair edges, and floors beside exterior doors, where friction or tracked soil can concentrate dust. Wash hands after outdoor play, gardening, or contact with bare soil. Do not let children eat or play directly in soil next to an older painted structure unless local officials have addressed the area.
Inspection and risk assessment are different
For a pre-1978 home, ask your state or local health department about testing or use a qualified lead professional. A paint inspection identifies whether lead is present on painted structural components. A risk assessment evaluates hazards such as deteriorated paint and lead dust and recommends controls. If you need to know both whether paint contains lead and what must be corrected, ask which service covers each question.
Ask prospective providers what credentials they hold, what areas they serve, whether they collect dust samples, and whether their report will distinguish intact paint from an active hazard. A home test kit or visual inspection cannot reliably determine every source or replace a professional assessment when a child is exposed.
Renovation and repair
Use a contractor certified by EPA for work that disturbs lead paint. Keep children and pregnant people out of the work area and prevent dust from moving through the home. Do not make do-it-yourself paint removal the default approach in older housing. A qualified professional can specify containment, cleaning, worker practices, and clearance testing where required.

Tell contractors the building’s age before work begins. Window replacement, drilling, sanding, demolition, and paint removal can all disturb painted surfaces. Keep doors to the work zone closed as directed, do not move children’s belongings through it, and wait for the contractor’s clearance or re-entry instructions before restoring the room.
Lead in tap water
What families can and cannot detect
Lead in drinking water cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled. A clear glass of water is not evidence that it is lead-free. Lead can enter water from service lines, household plumbing, faucets, or fittings, and the situation can differ between homes on the same street.
Immediate steps while you arrange information
- Contact the local water utility and ask whether a lead service line serves your address and how to obtain a water test.
- Use only cold tap water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and preparing infant formula.
- Let water run according to your utility’s instructions when water has been sitting in pipes; do not assume a universal flushing time.
- Do not boil water to remove lead. Boiling does not remove lead, and hot tap water can contain higher lead concentrations.
- If you use a filter, verify the exact model’s independent certification and follow its installation and cartridge-replacement instructions.
CDC identifies NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI 42 for particulate reduction as relevant certification markings for a point-of-use filter. Certification applies to the specific model and claimed function; a general statement that a filter is “tested” or “for clean water” is not enough. A filter also does not diagnose a child or replace water testing.
When comparing filters, check the model number, the exact contaminant claim, rated capacity, flow direction, and replacement interval. A certified lead-reduction claim does not mean the device removes every contaminant, works when the cartridge is overdue, or treats water from an unknown source. Keep replacement cartridges matched to the model and follow installation instructions to avoid bypassing the filter.
Families using private wells should ask their local or state health department about sampling laboratories and contaminants of concern. Public-utility information cannot establish the condition of a private well or a home’s internal plumbing. Ask the laboratory how to collect the sample without contaminating it and whether additional testing is appropriate for the well and plumbing.
Mercury: choose fish wisely rather than avoiding fish altogether
Fish provide useful nutrients, so mercury prevention is not an “avoid all fish” rule. FDA/EPA advice revised October 2021 recommends that children ages 1–11 eat two servings each week from the “Best Choices” category, using age-appropriate portions.
| Child’s age | Approximate serving size in the FDA/EPA advice |
|---|---|
| 1–3 years | 1 ounce |
| 4–7 years | 2 ounces |
| 8–10 years | 3 ounces |
| 11 years | 4 ounces |
The “Best Choices” list includes anchovies, Atlantic mackerel, catfish, salmon, sardines, shrimp, tilapia, trout, and other species. The advice lists king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, shark, swordfish, Gulf of Mexico tilefish, and bigeye tuna as “Choices to Avoid” for children. Follow the FDA/EPA chart for the current list and serving details rather than relying on a fish’s common name alone.

Fish caught by family or friends
Check the advisory for the specific lake, river, coast, or bay before serving recreationally caught fish. Local advisories can address mercury and other contaminants that vary by water body. If no advisory is available, use the interim advice on the FDA page and contact local or state authorities; do not invent a universal serving rule for an untested catch.
Ask about both the species and the water body, and follow any instructions about trimming, cooking, or limiting meals. An advisory may address contaminants other than mercury, so substituting a general grocery-store rule for a local warning can miss an important hazard.
Mercury products and spills
Preventing household spills
- Replace mercury thermometers with digital thermometers.
- Store mercury-containing items away from children and prevent them from being dropped or broken.
- Never heat or burn mercury.
What to do after a spill
- Keep children and pets out of the area and avoid spreading droplets on shoes or clothing.
- Do not vacuum, sweep, mop, or use a household fan; these actions can spread mercury or increase vapor.
- Do not heat the spill or attempt to melt or burn contaminated materials.
- Contact state or local health or environmental officials for instructions and disposal guidance.
Mercury cleanup can require specialized procedures. If the spill is substantial, has entered cracks or heating systems, or involves a broken device in a child’s play area, wait for official guidance rather than improvising. Do not place mercury-contaminated materials in ordinary trash unless officials specifically tell you how to package and dispose of them.
Cleaners, pesticides, and everyday chemical storage
Storage and labeling
- Keep cleaners and pesticides locked or otherwise inaccessible to children, preferably in their original containers with labels intact.
- Never transfer pesticides into beverage, food, or unmarked containers.
- Read and follow the product label, including dilution, ventilation, protective equipment, and re-entry instructions.
- Keep children, toys, and pets away from treated areas for the time stated on the label.
Using products safely
- Ventilate when cleaning, as the label directs.
- Never mix cleaning products. Combining products can create dangerous gases or heat.
- Wash produce under running water before serving.
- Keep wet products, used cloths, and pesticide equipment away from children until they are handled or stored as directed.
Household prevention does not mean every product is harmless after a quick rinse. Follow the label and call poison-control or emergency services for a suspected ingestion, breathing problem, burn, or severe reaction.
Use the label’s re-entry interval even if a treated surface looks dry. Do not assume that a “natural,” “green,” or odorless product is automatically safe for children; storage, ventilation, and label directions still apply.
Radon and other remodeling hazards
Test for radon
Radon is an indoor radioactive gas that cannot be judged by smell or appearance. EPA recommends testing a home with a radon test kit and fixing the home if the result is 4 pCi/L or higher. A test kit measures; it does not mitigate. Use current EPA and state instructions for kit placement, test duration, confirmatory testing, and contractor selection.
Place and interpret a kit exactly as directed, and ask state radon officials what follow-up is needed for a result near or above the action level. Mitigation is a separate service from testing; a kit cannot lower the concentration.
Before opening walls or removing materials
Older buildings may contain lead, asbestos, mercury, or other hazardous materials. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify them. Before remodeling, ask the appropriate local authority or a qualified professional whether an inspection is needed. ATSDR notes that hazardous-material removal can require special care, training, and equipment; professional removal is appropriate when the material, condition, or project exceeds a household’s safe capabilities.

Prevent take-home exposure from work and hobbies
Lead and other contaminants can travel home on clothing, footwear, skin, hair, tools, or equipment. This can matter for construction, painting, battery or metal work, shooting, renovation, pottery, recycling, and other activities that generate dust or fumes. The exact controls depend on the task and workplace rules.
- Change out of contaminated work clothing and shoes before contact with children or household surfaces.
- Keep work clothes and equipment separate from family laundry and living areas; follow workplace laundering instructions.
- Wash hands and exposed skin before eating, driving home, or handling a child.
- Use employer-provided controls and ask an occupational-health professional about suspected take-home contamination.
Do not rely on a child’s lack of symptoms to rule out exposure. Dust can accumulate in vehicles, entryways, laundry areas, and play spaces even when the source activity occurs elsewhere. Ask the employer whether clothing should remain at work, be laundered separately, or be transported in a sealed container.

Lead exposure or concern
CDC states: “No safe level of lead in children has been identified.” Most people exposed to lead do not have symptoms. A blood lead test is the best way to tell whether a child has been exposed, and a healthcare provider can determine whether testing and follow-up are needed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Contact the child’s healthcare provider and local health department if you suspect exposure, the home has deteriorated pre-1978 paint, renovation has created dust, a water test is concerning, or a child may have swallowed paint chips or contaminated soil. Bring information about the source, date, location, and steps already taken. Medical treatment decisions belong to clinicians; cleaning, diet, or a consumer product should never be presented as treatment for lead poisoning.
EPA notes that a balanced diet containing calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin C may help reduce the amount of lead absorbed, but nutrition does not remove lead from a child’s body or replace source control and medical follow-up. Do not start supplements as a treatment without discussing them with the child’s clinician.
Urgent situations
Call emergency services for trouble breathing, seizures, loss of consciousness, severe vomiting, or another life-threatening reaction. For a possible poisoning without severe symptoms, contact your regional poison-control service promptly and follow its instructions. Do not induce vomiting unless specifically directed.
A practical household checklist
- Map contact points: list the child’s play areas, sleeping areas, drinking and cooking water, foods and fish, renovation zones, and any work or hobby brought home.
- Control access today: block off peeling paint and spill areas, secure chemicals, remove contaminated shoes or clothing, and keep children away from treatment sites.
- Reduce routine dust: damp-wipe, wet-mop, wash hands and toys, and avoid dry sweeping or casual sanding.
- Ask the right authority: call the water utility about service lines and sampling; call the health department about lead services, private wells, fish advisories, and local testing.
- Use qualified services for hazardous work: choose an EPA-certified lead-safe contractor for work that disturbs lead paint and qualified professionals for hazardous-material removal or radon mitigation.
- Arrange health follow-up: discuss suspected lead exposure and blood testing with the child’s healthcare provider, even if the child appears well.
The goal is not to make a home risk-free by guesswork. It is to remove the most plausible contact routes, verify uncertain sources with appropriate testing, and escalate work that requires certification, containment, or medical judgment.

Can boiling tap water remove lead?
No. Boiling does not remove lead, and hot tap water can contain higher lead concentrations. Use cold water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and preparing formula, and ask the water utility about service lines and testing.
Should children stop eating fish because of mercury?
No. FDA/EPA advice recommends two weekly servings from lower-mercury “Best Choices” for children ages 1–11, with portions scaled by age. Avoid the named high-mercury fish and check local advisories for recreational catches.
What should I do if a mercury thermometer breaks?
Keep children and pets away. Do not vacuum, sweep, mop, use a fan, heat the spill, or burn contaminated materials. Contact state or local health or environmental officials for cleanup and disposal instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs a home water filter automatically safe for lead?
No. Check the exact model for independent certification indicating NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI 42 for particulate reduction. Follow installation and cartridge-replacement directions; a filter does not replace water testing or medical advice.
Can I sand or scrape old paint myself?
Do not casually disturb paint in pre-1978 housing. Sanding, scraping, renovation, and window work can create hazardous dust. Use an EPA-certified contractor for work that disturbs lead paint and keep children and pregnant people away from the work area.
What radon level requires action?
EPA recommends fixing a home when testing shows radon at or above 4 pCi/L. A test kit measures radon but does not mitigate it; follow current EPA and state instructions for confirmation and qualified mitigation.
The Bottom Line
Start with the child’s actual contact routes: damaged paint and dust, tap water, soil, fish, stored chemicals, spills, radon, and work brought home. Block access immediately, damp-clean rather than dry-sweep, use only cold water for consumption, follow FDA/EPA fish guidance, and never improvise mercury cleanup. Testing identifies uncertainty; certified contractors, laboratories, health departments, and clinicians handle hazards that routine housekeeping cannot.
