Defensible space is a maintained buffer that gives a bushfire fewer connected fuels and fewer places to drop or carry embers into your house. Start at the building: remove leaf litter and other combustibles from the roof, gutters, decks, porches, stairs and the first few feet around the walls. Then work outward by separating grasses, shrubs and tree branches, inspecting vulnerable building parts, and keeping the property maintained throughout the fire season.

This work can slow fire spread and reduce exposure to embers, flames and radiant heat. It cannot guarantee that a house will survive, and it is not a reason to delay evacuation. Distances and legal requirements differ by jurisdiction. The zone measurements below are CAL FIRE guidance for California, while the household-preparation and evacuation advice from NSW applies to New South Wales, Australia. Use the sequence as a framework, then confirm requirements with your local fire service, council and building official.

What defensible space does—and does not do

Defensible space is the area between a structure and surrounding vegetation or other fuels that is kept in a condition that makes ignition and fire spread less likely. CAL FIRE describes it as both protection for the home and a safer area for firefighters. It is designed to reduce continuous fuel, interrupt the path of a surface fire into shrubs and trees, and limit the debris that can ignite when embers arrive.

Embers can travel ahead of the main fire and lodge in gutters, roof debris, vents, gaps, decks and accumulated material under stairs or porches. A neat-looking garden can still present a serious problem if dry leaves collect against a wall or if connected shrubs lead flames into a tree canopy. Defensible space therefore combines vegetation management, removal of combustible storage and maintenance of the building envelope.

No buffer makes a property fireproof. Wind, slope, fire intensity, construction, neighboring fuels and the number of embers reaching the site all affect the outcome. Treat property preparation as one layer of risk reduction, alongside a household evacuation plan and attention to official warnings.

Use the right zone model for your location

There is no single worldwide defensible-space standard. CAL FIRE’s three-zone model is a useful worked example for California; it should not be presented as a universal legal rule. In California, the outer boundary may be the property line when that is closer than the stated distance, and local regulations can add requirements.

California guidance zone Distance from the structure Main purpose and actions
Zone 0 First 5 feet Make the area most resistant to ember ignition. Remove dead plants, leaf litter, needles, bark mulch, firewood, outdoor furnishings and other combustibles. CAL FIRE identifies gravel, pavers or concrete as hardscape choices for this closest area.
Zone 1 5 to 30 feet Maintain vegetation and remove dead or dying material. Break up connected grasses, shrubs and branches so fire has less opportunity to climb or move continuously toward the house.
Zone 2 30 to 100 feet, or to the property line if nearer Reduce and separate fuels across the wider property. Keep plants maintained, remove dead material and prevent a continuous route from grass to shrubs to tree crowns.

California’s distances are boundaries for organizing work, not a measured promise of a particular percentage reduction in risk. A local fire agency may apply different rules because of terrain, vegetation, lot size or building type.

Step 1: Remove the fuels and debris closest to the house

Start above the walls

Clear leaves, needles, twigs and other debris from the roof and gutters. Embers can ignite this material and expose the roof edge, fascia and nearby cladding. Clean gutters as part of seasonal preparation and continue checking them after windy periods or when nearby vegetation sheds heavily.

Noncombustible gutter covers or guards can reduce the amount of debris entering a gutter, but they do not eliminate maintenance. A guard that is covered with dry leaves still presents an ignition opportunity. NSW Government and NSW Rural Fire Service specifically include metal gutter guards and fine metal mesh screens in household preparation advice; CAL FIRE also recommends noncombustible covers and regular cleaning.

Clear decks, porches, stairs and spaces beneath structures

Remove leaf litter and other combustible debris from decks, porches, stairs and landings. Inspect the underside of elevated decks and stairs, where wind-blown embers can collect out of sight. Do not use these areas for storing firewood, lumber, cardboard, garden waste or spare outdoor materials.

Outdoor furniture, cushions, decorative items and stored equipment should be moved away from the building when fire weather is expected. The objective is to prevent an ember from finding a small combustible item that can ignite siding, doors, windows or the deck itself.

Choose a low-combustibility surface in the first five feet

In CAL FIRE’s Zone 0, replace combustible bark or mulch immediately beside walls with hardscape such as gravel, pavers or concrete where suitable for the site. Keep the surface free of leaves and other debris. Check drainage, accessibility and local landscaping rules before changing the ground surface.

Move stored fuels farther away

Relocate firewood piles, lumber and other combustible storage away from the structure. Keep these materials separated from doors, windows, vents and eaves, where an ignition could enter the building. Do not assume that a small pile is harmless: several small items close to a wall can create the same pathway as one large fuel source.

Step 2: Work outward and break fuel continuity

Maintain grasses and remove dead material

Cut or otherwise maintain dry grasses and remove dead and dying vegetation. Clear fallen branches and accumulations of leaves and needles. The aim is not to strip every plant from the property; it is to avoid a connected layer of dry fuel that can carry fire toward the structure.

Separate shrubs from tree branches

CAL FIRE advises keeping tree branches at least six feet above the ground. It also recommends leaving a distance of at least three times a shrub’s height between shrubs and the lowest tree branches. These separations reduce the chance that a surface fire will climb through shrubs into a tree canopy, a process often called laddering.

Look at the property from several directions and include vegetation on slopes, along fences and beside driveways. A gap that exists on level ground can disappear where vegetation leans uphill or where branches overlap. Remove dead limbs and trim overhanging growth so that plants do not form a continuous bridge to the roof or upper walls.

Keep the outer area maintained

Zone 2 in the California model extends from 30 to 100 feet, or to the property line if nearer. Continue removing dead material and separating fuels through this area. On small lots, you may reach a boundary quickly; in that case, discuss shared vegetation and access with neighbors or the local fire service rather than assuming the property line ends the risk.

Maintenance is ongoing. New growth, fallen branches, windblown debris and seasonal drying can recreate a continuous fuel path after an initial cleanup. Put vegetation checks on the same household calendar as gutter cleaning and other fire-season preparations.

Step 3: Inspect the building envelope for ember entry

Defensible space works best when the house itself offers fewer ignition points. CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guidance identifies gutters, vents, eaves, siding, windows, doors, decks, fences and combustible attachments as areas to inspect.

Gutters and roof edges

Clean gutters and remove debris from roof valleys and edges. Consider noncombustible covers where appropriate, but retain access for inspection and cleaning. Repair damaged roof-edge components and keep nearby branches from depositing material on the roof.

Vents and other openings

Ember-resistant vents or approved noncombustible, corrosion-resistant metal mesh can reduce the chance of embers entering through vents. Vent modifications can also reduce airflow or affect how a building system operates. CAL FIRE’s guidance calls for state fire marshal-approved ember-resistant vents or suitable metal mesh in the cited opening range, while directing homeowners to consult a local building official and use licensed contractors. Do not treat vent replacement as a simple, one-size-fits-all DIY task.

Eaves, siding, windows and doors

Look for gaps, cracks and openings around eaves, siding, windows and doors. Repair openings that could admit embers, and keep combustible items away from these features. Check that doors and windows close properly and that screens or other components are intact. Building-code requirements and acceptable materials vary, so confirm any alteration with the relevant authority.

Decks, fences and attachments

Inspect decks and fences for accumulated debris and combustible connections to the house. A fence that runs directly to a wall can carry fire to the structure; discuss ways to interrupt that path with a qualified building or fire professional. Remove vegetation and stored items from beneath decks and around attached structures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Prepare practical equipment without overestimating it

NSW Rural Fire Service recommends having hoses long enough to reach around the home. A long hose can help with routine property maintenance and may be useful for limited, safe tasks before conditions deteriorate. It does not make it safe to remain during a bushfire, and it is not a substitute for leaving early.

Keep access paths clear so household members and emergency crews can move around the property. Store tools and hoses where they can be found quickly, while keeping combustible storage away from the walls and openings. If your local authority recommends additional equipment, follow that advice and learn its limits before fire weather arrives.

Step 5: Check local permissions before clearing or modifying

Vegetation removal and building work can be regulated. NSW Government guidance notes that some clearing may be allowed under specific schemes, while other vegetation work may require environmental approval. Burning can require a permit, and local restrictions may apply. Never assume that a ban or permit requirement is the same across councils or seasons.

In California, local building officials and fire agencies may apply requirements beyond the general CAL FIRE zone model. Before removing trees, changing drainage or hardscape, installing vent components or altering decks and fences, check with your local fire service, council and building official. Ask whether your property has a hazard classification, heritage or environmental constraint, or a rule governing work near a boundary.

A repeatable pre-season inspection

  1. Walk the five-foot area. Remove leaf litter, needles, dead plants, bark mulch, firewood, lumber, furniture and other combustibles from beside the walls and under or beside decks, porches and stairs.
  2. Clean the roof and gutters. Remove debris from roof surfaces, valleys and gutters. Inspect any gutter guard or cover and clear material that has collected on top of it.
  3. Check the middle zone. Remove dead vegetation, maintain grasses, separate shrubs and keep tree branches at least six feet above the ground where the California guidance applies.
  4. Look for ladder fuels. Measure the gap between shrubs and the lowest tree branches. In the California model, aim for at least three times the shrub height.
  5. Inspect the envelope. Check vents, eaves, siding, windows, doors, decks, fences and attachments for gaps, damage or accumulated combustibles.
  6. Confirm equipment and access. Make sure hoses can reach around the home, paths are clear and household members know where maintenance equipment is stored.
  7. Verify permissions. Contact the local authority before clearing regulated vegetation, burning material or altering building components.
  8. Record decisions. Photograph problem areas and note who will complete each repair or cleanup task, especially when work involves a neighbor or contractor.

How often to maintain defensible space

Do a substantial inspection before the local bushfire or wildfire season, then repeat short checks during the season. Recheck after strong winds, heavy leaf fall, pruning, construction or a nearby fire. Gutters and roof debris need attention whenever material accumulates; vegetation needs attention when it grows into the required separation or dries out.

Divide the property into sections if a full inspection is difficult. Complete the area closest to the house first, then work outward. This prioritization protects the most ember-sensitive locations even when time or resources are limited, but it does not remove the need to address outer fuel continuity before the season peaks.

Defensible space and evacuation planning are inseparable

NSW Government guidance says leaving early is the safest choice. Decide in advance when to leave, where everyone will go, which routes are available and how pets, children, older people or anyone needing assistance will travel. Keep up to date with official warning information and understand the alert levels used in your area.

You do not have to wait for an official warning before leaving if conditions or your household plan indicate that it is time. A prepared property may have a better chance of withstanding an ember attack, but no household should rely on the building surviving or plan to stay because cleanup was completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discuss the plan with every household member. Set a departure trigger that is clear enough to act on under stress, identify a backup route and keep essential medications, documents and communication equipment ready. Revisit the plan when household members, vehicles or local access conditions change.

Choosing between common property measures

Measure Combustibility and ember considerations Maintenance and approval issues
Gravel, pavers or concrete in the closest zone CAL FIRE identifies these as noncombustible hardscape choices for the first five feet, reducing combustible mulch immediately beside the structure. Check drainage, access and local landscaping rules. Debris still needs to be removed from the surface.
Metal gutter guard or noncombustible cover Can reduce debris entering gutters and is supported in California and NSW guidance. It does not remove the need for gutter inspection and cleaning. Confirm that the installation is suitable for the roof and local requirements.
Ember-resistant vent or approved metal mesh Designed to reduce ember entry through vents. Vent changes can affect airflow. Consult a building official and use a licensed contractor; approval and acceptable specifications vary.
Long garden hose NSW Rural Fire Service recommends enough length to reach around the home for preparedness. A hose is not a guarantee of safe active defense and must not replace an evacuation plan or early departure.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Cleaning only the visible front yard: Embers can collect on roofs, behind fences, under decks and in gutters. Inspect every side and elevated or concealed space.
  • Leaving mulch or stored items against the wall: Move bark, firewood, lumber, cushions and furniture away from the structure, and use a lower-combustibility surface in the closest zone where appropriate.
  • Trimming without breaking the fuel path: A neatly pruned shrub can still touch a tree branch or continuous grass. Check the vertical and horizontal gaps between fuel layers.
  • Installing a vent product without advice: An alteration that reduces airflow or fails local code can create a new problem. Obtain professional and authority approval first.
  • Assuming a gutter guard is maintenance-free: Inspect the guard and remove debris that collects on top or in the gutter.
  • Using a hose as a stay-and-defend plan: Equipment cannot make rapidly changing fire conditions safe. Leave according to the household plan and official guidance.
  • Clearing without checking permissions: Environmental, council, fire-safety and permit rules can apply. Confirm them before cutting vegetation or burning material.
  • Treating the property line as a complete solution: Fire can cross from neighboring vegetation or carry embers over a boundary. Coordinate where practical and ask the local fire service about shared hazards.

When to obtain a professional assessment

Seek local fire-service or qualified professional advice when the house sits on a steep slope, vegetation crosses a boundary, trees overhang the roof, access is constrained, or the building has complex decks, vents or attachments. Professional input is particularly important for vent replacement, structural changes and work that may require approval.

The NSW Rural Fire Service household assessment approach is useful for identifying property-specific issues and for framing the stay-or-leave decision. Use an assessment to find priorities, not to obtain a guarantee that the home can be defended or occupied during a fire.

Putting the plan into practice

Begin with the highest-consequence, lowest-effort tasks: remove debris from the roof and gutters, clear combustible material from the first few feet and under decks, and move firewood and lumber. Next, restore separation between grasses, shrubs and trees, then schedule envelope repairs and any regulated work with the right authority or contractor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a written checklist and a date for the next inspection. Defensible space is effective only while it remains maintained. Pair each property task with a household decision: who checks warnings, what conditions trigger departure, how everyone travels and where the household reunites. That combination—fewer ignition opportunities and an early, practiced evacuation plan—is the most reliable way to reduce bushfire risk without mistaking preparation for protection from every fire.
