To reduce Bluetooth audio delay while gaming, first make sure your USB-C transmitter and headphones support the same low-latency codec or gaming mode—and confirm that mode is active. A transmitter cannot make incompatible headphones use a codec they do not support. Then try the free connection fixes below; replace hardware only if those steps fail or your devices have no compatible low-latency mode.

The useful order is compatibility, active mode, connection conditions, then replacement. That sequence helps separate a codec mismatch from an interference or pairing problem. It also avoids buying a transmitter based only on its connector, Bluetooth version, or an advertised latency figure.

Why Bluetooth game audio falls behind

Bluetooth audio is encoded, transmitted, and decoded before it reaches your headphones. That processing takes time. A low-latency codec or dedicated gaming mode can reduce the delay, but only when the transmitting device and the headphones both support a compatible mode and actually connect using it. If they do not, the connection may fall back to ordinary Bluetooth audio.

This is why changing only the USB-C transmitter may not solve the problem. A transmitter cannot force ordinary headphones or earbuds to use a codec they do not support. Conversely, headphones advertised with a low-latency codec cannot use it through a transmitter that lacks compatible support. Both ends need to share the same option, and the connection must actually use it.

The Bluetooth version printed on a device—such as 5.3 or 5.4—does not by itself establish that it supports a particular codec or low-latency mode. Bluetooth version, codec support, and a named gaming mode are different things to check. Look up the exact transmitter and headphone or earbud models, their manuals, and their supported codecs. Avantree’s support guidance on audio lag likewise emphasizes that both ends must support a compatible low-latency technology.

There is also a difference between a codec figure and the delay you experience in a game. A published number may describe latency under a particular condition or mode, rather than the complete path from a game’s sound to your ears. The source, transmitter, receiver, processing, and active mode all matter. Use the figures below to understand the claims, not as a promise that every setup will feel identical.

Try these fixes before buying anything

Work through these steps in order, and test the same game and setup after each relevant change. That makes it easier to tell whether the issue was a mismatch, an unintended connection, or the wireless path. These are free checks; none requires assuming that the transmitter is defective.

  1. Identify both devices. Find the transmitter’s exact model and the exact headphone or earbud model. Look up each device’s codec and low-latency-mode support in its product information or manual. Write down the modes they share. Do not assume compatibility based on USB-C or Bluetooth version alone. If the product materials do not list a shared mode, do not treat a codec name on only one device as proof that the pair can use it.
  2. Check which mode is active. Consult the transmitter’s manual to interpret its indicator lights or other status display. Indicators vary by model; a light only confirms a codec or mode if that device’s documentation says it does. If a product has a gaming mode, check whether its manual says the mode must be selected. Do not infer the active codec from the color of an unfamiliar light or from the fact that audio is playing.
  3. Stop other devices from connecting to the headphones. Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, or computers that have previously paired with the headphones. This can prevent an unwanted connection while you diagnose the gaming setup. The point is to make sure the headphones are connecting directly to the transmitter you are testing, rather than auto-connecting elsewhere. Turn Bluetooth back on later if needed, once the test is complete.
  4. Improve the wireless path. Keep the headphones close to the transmitter. For a test, move away from Wi-Fi routers, other Bluetooth devices, other wireless equipment, and large obstacles that could interfere with the connection. Change one condition at a time when practical: for example, first bring the headphones closer, then test again before moving the setup away from other wireless equipment. If that changes the result, you have useful evidence that connection conditions matter in your location; it does not by itself change codec compatibility.
  5. Restart and pair directly. Restart the transmitter and headphones, then pair the headphones directly with the transmitter again. Follow the pairing sequence in the relevant manuals. This gives you a clean chance to establish the intended connection and avoid relying on an earlier pairing. After pairing, check the transmitter’s status indicator or display again rather than assuming the desired mode is active.
  6. Test the same game and setup again. Keep the source platform, game, headphones, and approximate listening position consistent while checking whether the delay improved. If you change several variables at once, it may be harder to learn which step helped. If the delay remains, check that the intended low-latency mode is still active. If your devices lack a compatible mode, or the delay is still unacceptable, consider a different audio connection or compatible hardware.

These steps separate a mode or compatibility problem from a connection problem. If the devices share a low-latency mode but the indicator shows another mode, focus on the manufacturer’s instructions for selecting or enabling it. If the indicator does not tell you which mode is active, the manual is the authority; do not guess from the indicator alone. If the mode is active and the connection is stable but the delay remains, the remaining delay may come from the full audio path rather than a fixable pairing issue.

A practical diagnostic sequence is therefore: establish a shared codec or gaming mode; confirm whether it is active; remove other paired-device connections from the test; improve proximity and reduce nearby wireless equipment; restart and pair directly; then repeat the same game test. If the mode is unsupported, repeated re-pairing will not add support. If the mode is supported and active, repeated purchases based on a Bluetooth-version number alone are unlikely to address the question you have not yet answered: whether the new device shares the required mode with your headphones.

What latency figures do—and do not—tell you

Latency figures are useful for comparing claims, but they are not automatically measurements of what you will experience from a particular game to a particular pair of headphones. They may describe one part of the audio path, a manufacturer’s estimate, or a specific operating mode. Total delay depends on the source, transmitter, receiver, processing, and active mode. A low number should therefore be read together with the test condition, the exact device combination, and whether the figure is a manufacturer claim or an independent measurement.

Qualcomm says aptX Low Latency has “approximately 40ms latency” when achieved from an audio adapter running its aptX Low Latency encoder. The company says this can improve gaming and lip-syncing, but the figure is not a universal end-to-end result for every console, game, transmitter, and headset. See Qualcomm’s aptX Low Latency overview. In particular, the statement does not mean that any adapter, any receiver, or any game will produce 40 ms total delay simply because aptX appears somewhere in a product description.

Avantree publishes the following approximate codec latency figures. They are vendor estimates for orientation, not universal guarantees or independent comparative measurements.

Codec or mode Approximate latency in Avantree’s guidance
aptX HD 250 ms or more
aptX Low Latency About 40 ms
aptX About 70 ms
aptX Adaptive 50–80 ms
FastStream About 40 ms
SBC About 220 ms
LE Audio LC3 About 50 ms
LE Audio aptX Lite About 25 ms
LE Audio Auracast 50–120 ms

These estimates come from Avantree’s codec latency guidance. They do not prove that a device supports that mode, that it will select it automatically, or that a game will have the same end-to-end delay. Avantree also says FastStream latency is about the same as aptX Low Latency and that FastStream may provide better audio quality when using a headphone microphone, such as for calls and gaming. That is vendor guidance and depends on compatible devices.

Read the table as a comparison among the approximate values reported in that guidance, not as a ranking guaranteed for your own setup. For instance, a product that lists aptX Adaptive is not automatically a match for headphones that list only aptX Low Latency. A mode name in a codec table is not a substitute for checking the exact transmitter and receiver’s supported modes. Nor does a nominally lower figure guarantee that the mode is active in your connection.

There are no comparable independent end-to-end measurements across the platforms and device combinations covered here. That means a manufacturer’s 30 ms or approximately 40 ms claim should be attributed to that manufacturer and its stated mode or condition, not presented as a universal measurement. No prevalence statistic about how many gamers experience Bluetooth audio delay is established by the sources reviewed, either; a number about how common the issue is should not be invented.

When a different transmitter or headset makes sense

Consider changing hardware only after checking codec compatibility, the active mode, and the connection. A replacement transmitter is useful only if it supports a low-latency mode that your headphones also support and if its USB-C audio interface works with your intended console, computer, or phone. Check the exact product’s current manual and platform list; USB-C alone does not guarantee that a platform will support a particular transmitter.

When comparing transmitters, start with the shared codec or mode. Next, verify that the transmitter supports the platform and connection you intend to use. Then check whether a gaming or low-latency mode needs to be manually selected and how the device indicates that the mode is active. Those checks matter more than a Bluetooth-version label or an isolated latency number. Product compatibility, availability, and codec listings can change, so confirm the current regional product listing and manual before buying.

For example, Qualcomm’s product listing identifies the Avantree C51 as a Type-C aptX Low Latency transmitter for Nintendo Switch. That makes it an example of a transmitter intended for low-delay gaming, not proof that it will enable low latency with every headphone. The headphones still need compatible support. See Qualcomm’s Avantree C51 listing.

Sennheiser’s BTD 700 listing specifies USB-A and USB-C use and a dedicated gaming mode that the company claims reaches 30 ms. Sennheiser lists compatibility with Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 or later, iOS, Android 13 or later, PS4, and PS5. The 30 ms figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent measurement; check the regional listing and the exact device and headphone compatibility before buying. See Sennheiser’s BTD 700 product page.

These examples illustrate why platform support and receiver support are separate checks. A platform list can show where a product is stated to work, but it does not establish that every headphone will use the same low-latency mode. A codec match does not establish that a console, phone, or computer will support a transmitter’s USB-C audio interface. Confirm both parts for the exact models you intend to pair.

When voice chat matters, verify microphone support for the exact combination you plan to use. Avantree’s note about FastStream suggests a possible advantage when using a headphone microphone, but it is vendor guidance, not a universal feature of low-latency codecs. Support for a low-latency audio codec alone does not establish how chat audio will work. The research here does not establish microphone support for every example transmitter, headphone, or platform, so check the relevant current product documentation rather than assuming.

No product in this research was personally tested, and the cited information does not establish a price or a universal cost advantage for one solution. Compare the specifications and requirements for your exact setup rather than treating a product example as a recommendation or assuming that a higher price guarantees lower delay.

Special case: AirPods

Avantree’s support guidance says AirPods do not support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive. Do not assume a generic Bluetooth transmitter will eliminate delay with AirPods. Check the exact connection method and supported mode for both devices; if there is no shared low-latency option, the transmitter cannot create one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a compatibility check, not a claim that every AirPods connection behaves identically or that every possible transmitter has the same features. Confirm the exact AirPods and transmitter documentation. If the proposed purchase depends on aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive, the stated lack of AirPods support for those codecs is a reason not to assume that the combination will provide those modes.

What to use if Bluetooth still feels too slow

If the delay remains unacceptable after troubleshooting—or your devices have no compatible low-latency mode—consider wired headphones or a purpose-built low-latency gaming headset or dongle. Those are practical alternatives, not a guarantee: the sources cited here do not establish a universal latency advantage for every wired setup. Check the connection and compatibility requirements for the specific console or computer you use.

Before replacing anything, use the results of the checks to identify what the purchase must solve. If the existing headphones do not support the low-latency mode you want, a transmitter alone is not enough; look for a compatible receiver or choose another audio path. If the headphones and transmitter share a mode but it is not active, investigate the product’s selection instructions first. If the mode is active and proximity and pairing have been checked but the experience remains unacceptable, a different connection or purpose-built gaming option may be more appropriate.

Whatever route you choose, compare the actual platform support, shared mode, mode-selection requirements, and microphone needs. A product’s advertised number is only one part of that decision. The cited sources do not provide a universal end-to-end comparison of wired headphones, gaming dongles, and Bluetooth setups, so treat any specific result as dependent on the actual devices and connection.

Does Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 guarantee low-latency gaming audio?

No. Bluetooth version alone does not establish codec or low-latency-mode compatibility. Check the exact transmitter and headphone models and their manuals.

How do I know whether the low-latency mode is active?

Check the transmitter’s manual for the meaning of its status light or display. Indicators differ by model, so do not infer the active codec from an unfamiliar light.

What should I try before replacing my transmitter?

Turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices previously paired to the headphones, move the headphones close to the transmitter and away from routers and other wireless equipment, restart both devices, and pair the headphones directly with the transmitter. Then check the active mode and retest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is aptX Low Latency always 40 ms end to end?

No. Qualcomm describes approximately 40 ms when achieved from an audio adapter running its aptX Low Latency encoder. That is not a universal end-to-end figure for every game, platform, transmitter, and headset.

Will a generic transmitter eliminate delay with AirPods?

Do not assume so. Avantree says AirPods do not support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive. Check the exact connection and supported modes; a transmitter cannot create a mode the headphones lack.

Is the Sennheiser BTD 700’s 30 ms figure an independent test result?

No. It is Sennheiser’s claim for the BTD 700 dedicated gaming mode. The listing specifies supported platforms, but you should check current regional information and exact device compatibility.

The Bottom Line

Start by confirming that your USB-C transmitter and headphones share a low-latency codec or gaming mode, then use the manual to verify it is active. Keep the headphones close, remove other paired-device connections from the test, reduce nearby wireless interference, and restart and pair directly before buying anything. If delay persists, choose a replacement only after checking both ends’ codec support and the intended platform; an advertised latency number is not a universal end-to-end guarantee.
