To reduce blooming on a QLED TV, keep local dimming enabled, start with the strongest setting, then step down if halos around subtitles or highlights are distracting. Use gamma 2.2 in an average-lit room and 2.4 or BT.1886 in a dark room, leave Black Level at its calibrated default unless a test pattern shows a problem, and match the HDMI range on the TV and source. Calibrate SDR and HDR separately because their brightness controls often behave differently.
What blooming and black level actually mean
Blooming is the halo or glow that appears when a bright object sits beside a dark area. On a QLED television with a full-array backlight, the screen is divided into dimming zones rather than controlling every pixel independently. A zone that contains a white subtitle and surrounding black pixels must supply enough light for the subtitle, so some light spills into the nearby dark area. You may see this around subtitles, stars, streetlights, cursor icons, or bright objects in a letterboxed film.
Black level is how dark the TV renders a signal intended to be black. A black that appears gray is usually a raised black level, excessive ambient light, a mismatched HDMI range, or a backlight that is not being controlled as intended. A black that looks perfectly dark but hides folds, hair, or objects in a shadow is usually crushed black level. These are different problems: reducing brightness until the screen looks darker can destroy shadow detail without fixing the underlying mismatch.

Use this baseline before fine-tuning
Begin with a neutral picture mode and change one control at a time. Menu names differ by manufacturer and model, but the relevant controls are usually under Picture, Advanced picture, or Expert settings.
| Control | Starting point | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Picture mode | Movie, Filmmaker, or Custom | These modes normally avoid aggressive contrast processing. Disable extra “enhancers” unless you deliberately prefer their effect. |
| Local dimming | High first; compare with Medium or Standard | High generally gives the deepest blacks and strongest contrast, but can enlarge halos, pump brightness, or reveal zone transitions. |
| Gamma | 2.2 in an average-lit room; 2.4 or BT.1886 in a dark room | Changing gamma alters shadow visibility as well as perceived black depth. Recheck dark details after every change. |
| Black Level | Calibrated default | Too low crushes near-black detail; too high lifts blacks and makes them gray. |
| Energy saving or adaptive brightness | Off while calibrating if it changes luminance during scenes | Automatic changes can make a correct setting appear inconsistent. |
| HDMI dynamic range | Auto, Limited, or Full matched on both devices | A mismatch can crush blacks, lift them, or clip bright detail. |
Step-by-step setup for darker, more consistent blacks
- Let the TV warm up and use the normal viewing position. Turn the set on for several minutes, sit where you usually watch, and adjust it in the room where it normally operates. Ambient light changes perceived black level and the gamma that looks correct.
- Select a neutral picture mode. Open Picture and choose Movie, Filmmaker, or Custom. Turn off contrast boosters, dynamic color, and similar “enhancer” features while establishing a baseline. You can test them later, but they make it harder to identify the cause of crushed or lifted blacks.
- Enable local dimming. Set it to High initially if your priority is maximum contrast. Play a dark film scene, a star field, and a scene with white subtitles over black. If halos, brightness pumping, or visible zone transitions are more distracting than the extra contrast is beneficial, move to Medium or Standard. Keep the least distracting setting for the content you actually watch rather than assuming the strongest setting is always best.
- Set gamma for the room. Use 2.2 in an average-lit room. In a dark room, try 2.4 or BT.1886. A darker-room target usually makes midtones and shadows look deeper, but inspect a near-black scene to ensure that details have not disappeared.
- Leave Black Level at its calibrated default. Do not lower it simply because a black test screen looks gray. If the default is wrong for your source, display a proper near-black test pattern and raise or lower the control only enough to show the intended first visible shadow steps. A value that erases those steps is crushing detail; a value that reveals every supposedly black bar can lift the entire image.
- Calibrate SDR and HDR independently. Start an SDR program and make the SDR adjustments while it is playing. Then start HDR content and repeat the checks. HDR may automatically raise backlight or brightness, and many televisions expose separate controls or picture modes for HDR. A setting that looks right in SDR is not proof that HDR is correctly tracked.
- Match the HDMI range. On the source device, find its HDMI or video-range setting and note whether it outputs Auto, Limited, or Full. Set the TV input to the corresponding range, or use Auto on both when both devices reliably negotiate it. If one side is Full and the other expects Limited, blacks can be crushed or gray and bright detail can clip. Check both the TV and the source; changing only one side creates the mismatch.
- Disable automatic luminance changes during evaluation. Temporarily switch off energy-saving, ambient-light, or adaptive-brightness options if they visibly alter the screen during a scene. Once calibration is complete, you can decide whether the power savings are worth the changing luminance, but do not judge local dimming while another system is moving the backlight.
- Recheck several real scenes. Use letterbox bars, subtitles, a star field, a face in shadow, and a bright highlight against black. Compare the same scenes with local dimming High and Medium/Standard, then keep the setting that balances black depth, halo size, shadow detail, brightness stability, and HDR highlight impact.
Choosing High versus Medium or Standard local dimming
Local-dimming labels are not standardized, so “High” on one model may behave differently from “High” on another. Treat the labels as starting points and judge the image.
| Priority | High | Medium or Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Black depth in letterbox bars | Usually best; zones dim more aggressively. | May look slightly lighter. |
| Halo around subtitles and small highlights | Can be larger or more obvious because the zone must drive brighter. | Often less distracting, though not eliminated. |
| Shadow-detail retention | Can hide detail if the algorithm dims a zone containing faint objects. | May preserve more detail in difficult mixed scenes. |
| Brightness stability | More likely to show pumping or transitions as scenes change. | Often smoother, depending on the model. |
| HDR highlights | Usually gives stronger contrast and impact. | May trade some contrast for fewer transitions or halos. |
For a film with black bars and sparse highlights, High may produce the most convincing contrast. For programs with persistent white subtitles, sports graphics, game HUDs, or many small bright objects, Medium or Standard can look more natural. If you change the setting often, use the content type that bothers you most as the deciding test rather than a static black screen.

How gamma changes perceived black level
Gamma describes how the television maps the signal’s middle tones to light output. It is not a simple black-level control. A higher target such as 2.4 or BT.1886 in a dark room generally darkens the midtones and makes the image appear more contrasty. In a brighter room, that same target can make shadow information too difficult to see, which is why 2.2 is the usual starting point for average ambient light.
After changing gamma, inspect objects just above black: folds in dark clothing, hair against a dark background, steps in a shadow, and details in a night sky. If they vanish, the gamma target or Black Level is too low for the room, source, or panel behavior. If the entire shadow area looks washed out, the target may be too high for the viewing environment, or the source and TV may not agree on HDMI range.
Set Black Level with a test pattern, not a black screen
A completely black image cannot tell you whether near-black detail is being crushed. Use a calibrated near-black pattern with several steps just above reference black. Raise the TV’s Black Level only until the first intended steps become visible, then stop. If you can see steps that the pattern identifies as below black, the control is too high and the picture may look gray.

Why HDR and SDR need separate checks
SDR and HDR use different transfer functions and often trigger different backlight behavior. An HDR television may raise its backlight or brightness automatically when HDR metadata is detected. Some models store separate gamma, local-dimming, and Black Level values for HDR and SDR; others expose fewer controls but still change the underlying processing.
To avoid chasing a moving target, start the exact type of content you want to correct before adjusting it. For SDR, use a normal SDR movie or broadcast. For HDR, launch a title that actually reports HDR on the TV’s information banner. Do not judge HDR from an SDR menu screen, and do not assume a black level that works for one format transfers accurately to the other.
Fix HDMI black crush or gray blacks
Dynamic-range mismatches are a common cause of incorrect blacks on external devices. Limited range reserves code values for video black and white; Full range uses a wider computer-style range. The names and menu locations vary, but the principle is simple: the source’s output and the TV input’s expectation must correspond.

- Blacks are crushed and bright detail is missing: one device may be expecting Full while the other sends Limited, or the Black Level may be set too low.
- Blacks are gray and the whole image looks washed out: the range may be interpreted in the opposite direction, or Black Level may be too high.
- Only one console, player, or computer is affected: compare its HDMI range with the TV input used by that device; do not change the settings for every input blindly.
- Auto behaves inconsistently: set a matching explicit value on both devices, provided both offer the same choice.
After changing the range, repeat the near-black test and inspect a bright white object. Correct blacks with clipped whites are not a successful calibration.
Room lighting, viewing angle, and subtitles
Ambient light reflects from the panel and raises the black you perceive, even when the backlight is dimming correctly. Daylight or a lamp near the screen can make a dark scene look gray, encouraging you to lower Black Level and accidentally crush detail. Evaluate the TV under the lighting you normally use for movies or games, and use gamma 2.2 or 2.4/BT.1886 according to that environment.
Blooming also changes with viewing position. Off-axis viewing can make halos appear wider or blacks look less uniform than they do from the center seat. Sit in the position you want to optimize before deciding that a local-dimming setting failed.

Subtitles are a particularly demanding test because they are bright, small, and often surrounded by black. If the halo is unacceptable, try Medium or Standard local dimming, a less aggressive subtitle style, or a translucent subtitle background if the app provides one. These changes reduce the contrast between a tiny bright object and its dark surroundings; they cannot change the TV’s zone layout.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely causes | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Large glow around white subtitles | Zone size, aggressive local dimming, subtitle brightness, viewing angle | Compare High with Medium/Standard; test from the normal seat and check whether a subtitle-style option reduces the contrast. |
| Black bars change brightness during a scene | Local-dimming transitions or automatic brightness processing | Try Medium/Standard, disable adaptive brightness while testing, and compare several scene changes rather than one frame. |
| Dark details disappear | Black Level too low, gamma too high for the room, or HDMI range mismatch | Restore the default Black Level, verify the source/TV range, then recheck gamma with a near-black pattern. |
| Blacks look gray everywhere | Black Level too high, room reflections, range mismatch, or local dimming disabled | Enable local dimming, match HDMI range, inspect the room’s reflections, and set Black Level from a pattern. |
| HDR looks much brighter than SDR | Separate HDR behavior or automatic backlight increase | Adjust while HDR content is active; do not use SDR controls as a reference for HDR. |
| Settings seem to reset | Different input or picture mode, automatic mode switching, or separate SDR/HDR memories | Confirm the active input, format, and picture mode before changing values; record settings for each combination. |
| One device has incorrect blacks while others look right | That source’s HDMI output range differs from the TV input | Match the range on that source and its TV input, then verify with near-black and bright-detail patterns. |
What settings cannot fix
Local dimming cannot make a zone-based QLED behave like a display with independently controlled pixels. A large bright object will illuminate its entire zone, and a small highlight may share a zone with dark content. Firmware can improve the dimming algorithm, but it cannot add zones or remove the panel’s optical behavior. Panel size, zone count, firmware version, subtitle design, and viewing angle all affect the visible result.

The useful target is stable, convincing contrast with details preserved and halos that are unobtrusive at your normal seating distance. If two settings are both technically plausible, compare them on five criteria: black depth in letterbox bars and dark scenes, halo size, shadow-detail retention, brightness stability during scene changes, and HDR highlight impact.
When professional calibration is worthwhile
Home adjustments can correct mode selection, gamma choice, Black Level, local dimming, room-related choices, and HDMI range. They cannot verify grayscale tracking or exact luminance without measurement equipment. Adam Babcock, author of RTINGS’ calibration guide, puts the boundary clearly: “While a true calibration requires specialized equipment to measure the exact colors and light that your TV produces, there are plenty of things you can adjust at home without any special equipment.”
Consider a professional calibration service if accurate grayscale, gamma tracking, and shadow performance remain important after the steps above, particularly in a dedicated dark-room setup. Ask the calibrator to profile the modes and inputs you actually use, including HDR if it is a major part of your viewing. A service cannot remove hardware-limited blooming, but it can establish measured signal levels and reveal whether a persistent black problem is caused by the source, the TV settings, or the panel itself.
Quick Recap
A repeatable evaluation checklist
- Use the normal seat and normal room lighting.
- Confirm whether the program is SDR or HDR before changing settings.
- Start in Movie, Filmmaker, or Custom mode.
- Compare local dimming High with Medium or Standard using subtitles, star fields, letterbox bars, and mixed dark scenes.
- Use gamma 2.2 for average light or 2.4/BT.1886 for a dark room.
- Keep Black Level at default unless a near-black pattern calls for a small correction.
- Match HDMI Auto, Limited, or Full on the source and TV.
- Disable energy-saving or adaptive brightness while judging stability.
- Check both shadow detail and bright highlight detail after every change.
- Record separate values for each input, picture mode, and HDR/SDR format that the television stores independently.
