To reduce blooming on a Mini LED TV, start by comparing the television’s local-dimming levels on the same dark scene that shows the problem. More aggressive local dimming can make halos less visible, but it may also dim tiny bright details. Keep the setting that gives you the best balance of halo visibility, highlight brightness and shadow detail for your TV, room and viewing habits. There is no universal “best” level: menus, names and results vary by model, region and software.
What blooming and halos are
Blooming is a visible glow around a bright object against a dark background. Typical examples include white subtitles over a black letterbox, a streetlamp in a night scene, stars, or a bright logo. A halo is the same basic effect described from the viewer’s perspective: light appears to spread beyond the object’s intended edge.
A Mini LED television divides its backlight into independently controlled dimming areas. A bright object can occupy only part of one area, so the TV must illuminate that area strongly enough to show the object. The surrounding pixels remain dark, but the whole dimming area cannot always be made as dark as the object’s border would require. The result depends on the scene, the object’s size and position, the TV’s control algorithm and the particular panel.
Blooming is therefore not a single fault with one guaranteed cure. A setting that suppresses a halo around subtitles may make a small star less bright, while a setting that preserves tiny highlights may reveal more glow. Judge the change with material you actually watch rather than with one demonstration clip.

First identify the symptom you are seeing
Use the right branch before changing settings. A halo directly adjacent to a bright object is a local-dimming behavior. A broad bright patch, a whole background that looks uneven, or brightness that changes across a solid color can be a different issue.
- Halo around a bright object: compare local-dimming levels first.
- Bright or dark patch that remains when the object moves: photograph the effect and consult the exact model’s support documentation; do not assume a local-dimming change will correct it.
- Whole-screen brightness changing with the room: check whether an ambient-light feature is enabled. That changes the picture automatically but is not established as a cure for the underlying halo.
- Only one source or app affected: compare another input and another piece of content before treating the television as defective.
Local dimming is the first setting to test
Look in the picture menu for a control named Local Dimming, Auto Local Dimming, Local Contrast or a similar term. The exact path and available levels depend on the brand, model, region and software. Sony explains that Auto Local Dimming analyzes picture luminance in real time and adjusts backlight brightness; it also notes that the available options depend on the model. Do not change the control while watching random scenes. Use one repeatable scene, switch only the local-dimming level, and look at the same object each time. Otherwise a different shot, camera exposure or subtitle position can make a setting appear better when the content changed instead.

A controlled comparison you can repeat
- Choose a dark scene containing a small, bright object. White subtitles over black are useful because their position and size are easy to observe; a night sky with stars is another good test.
- Let the scene play for several seconds. Some televisions adjust the backlight continuously, so judge a stable shot rather than the instant a cut occurs.
- Open the picture settings and write down the current local-dimming level. If the TV has separate SDR, HDR, game or input memories, note which mode you are changing.
- Compare the available levels in order, including
Offif it is offered. Keep the scene, viewing position and room lighting unchanged. - For each level, check the halo immediately around the bright object, the object’s own brightness and nearby shadow detail. A dimmer halo is not automatically an improvement if the subtitle or star becomes visibly dull.
- Repeat with a second type of content. Subtitles test large, bright lettering; stars and distant lamps test very small highlights. A level can behave differently with each.
- Watch a normal program for several minutes with the preferred level. Look for distracting pumping, crushed shadow detail or highlights that disappear.
- Save the setting only after checking the content modes you use. Some sets store separate values for different inputs or picture modes.
How TCL’s local-dimming levels are described
TCL’s support documentation lists three example choices: Off, Normal and High. The labels and choices on your television may differ, but the documented behavior illustrates the trade-off you are testing. TCL says that Normal balances brightness and control, with high local brightness but some halos in extreme scenes; its support page states: “In normal mode, local dimming balances brightness and control, resulting in high local brightness but with some halo effects in extreme scenes.” TCL’s MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options describes the options in full.

TCL also cautions that a more aggressive level can reduce the brightness of very small light-emitting objects that are smaller than a dimming zone. That is why “High” should be treated as an experiment, not a universal recommendation. If a star, subtitle edge or tiny reflection loses too much intensity, step back to the less aggressive level that preserves the detail you care about.
Sony’s model-specific advice is narrower
Sony documents a specific case for the K-50XR70M2, also referred to as BRAVIA 7 II: when a bright image on a solid background makes the background color look uneven, Sony recommends setting Auto Local Dimming to Low or Off. The instruction appears in Sony’s support article about an uneven background.
That is not a general Sony or industry rule. It addresses a named model and a particular symptom—unevenness caused by a bright image on a solid background—not every halo around subtitles or stars. If your television is a different model, first check its own manual or support page. If the symptom is a persistent patch rather than a glow adjacent to an object, follow the model-specific troubleshooting instructions instead of copying this setting blindly.

When two levels look similar, compare them using three separate criteria. A single “less blooming” judgment can hide a loss elsewhere in the picture.

Halo visibility
Stand or sit at your normal viewing position and inspect the immediate border around subtitles, lamps and stars. Do not judge from an extreme side angle unless that is how you normally watch; viewing angle can change how visible the glow appears.
Small-highlight brightness
Check whether tiny bright objects still look like intentional highlights. A very aggressive dimming algorithm may reduce the light output of an object that occupies less than one dimming area. If highlights look gray, weak or intermittently suppressed, the lower level may be a better compromise.
Shadow detail
Look into dark clothing, corners and night backgrounds near the bright object. A setting that makes the black area appear darker can also hide subtle detail. Use familiar content where you know what should be visible rather than relying only on a black test screen.

Behavior in your own content
Blooming is scene-dependent. A setting that helps a movie with letterbox bars may not help sports graphics, games or a streaming app with permanent white subtitles. Keep the level that improves the material you watch most often, even if another level wins on a test clip.

Ambient-light features: useful adaptation, not a halo cure
Some compatible Sony televisions use an ambient-light sensor to adjust picture brightness or color automatically. Sony’s help guide explains this type of automatic adjustment in Adjusting the picture/sound quality automatically. A brighter room can make a halo less conspicuous to your eyes, and an automatic brightness change can alter how the scene appears, but the cited guidance does not establish room lighting or ambient sensing as a fix for the underlying blooming.
For a fair local-dimming comparison, temporarily keep ambient-light behavior consistent. If the sensor changes the screen while you are switching levels, you are comparing two moving targets. After selecting a level, re-enable the automatic feature if you prefer its day-to-night behavior and verify that it does not create distracting changes.

Confirm that the setting is active for the current source
Picture settings are often stored separately for inputs, apps, HDR and game modes. Change the setting while the troublesome content is playing, then leave and return to the same source to confirm that it persisted. If the control is unavailable, the current picture mode or input may not expose it.

Record the full model number, region and software version shown in the television’s support or system-information screen. Search the manufacturer’s support site using that exact identifier. Menu labels and options can change with firmware, and a recommendation for one series may not apply to another.

Separate blooming from an uneven panel or backlight issue
If the bright area is a fixed patch, appears on a uniform color, or remains after the bright object moves away, stop treating it as an ordinary halo. Capture a short video or photographs using the same scene and note the input and picture mode. Then use the manufacturer’s support process for that model. The Sony example above shows why symptom and model must be matched before selecting Low or Off.
Allow for the limits of the hardware
Local dimming can manage light from each backlight area, but it cannot make a small object occupy more physical areas. A setting can reduce visible glow by dimming the area more strongly; it cannot guarantee that every object will have a perfectly sharp light boundary. If every available level produces a different but still noticeable compromise, choose the one that preserves the details you value and avoid chasing a setting that does not exist on your model.
Common mistakes that make blooming comparisons unreliable
- Testing different scenes: camera exposure and object size can change the result more than the setting.
- Changing several controls at once: you cannot tell whether local dimming caused the improvement.
- Judging from a paused frame only: some algorithms react over time; watch the scene in motion as well.
- Using a phone camera as the final judge: exposure and automatic processing can exaggerate or hide halos. Use your eyes at your normal seating position first.
- Assuming High is always best: aggressive control can dim very small bright objects.
- Applying a model-specific fix universally: Sony’s Low-or-Off advice is documented for the K-50XR70M2/BRAVIA 7 II uneven-background case, not every Mini LED television.
- Calling a fixed patch blooming: a persistent uneven area needs model-specific support guidance.
- Buying an accessory as a guaranteed solution: the relevant controls are built into the television, and no model-independent accessory is established as a reliable way to remove actual blooming.
A practical decision checklist
- Describe the symptom: glow around a bright object, or a fixed uneven patch.
- Identify the exact TV model, region and current picture mode.
- Find the local-dimming control and note every available level.
- Use one repeatable dark scene with subtitles, stars or another small highlight.
- Compare halo visibility, highlight brightness and shadow detail at each level.
- Repeat with a second type of content that you watch regularly.
- Keep the level that gives the best real-world balance, not merely the darkest-looking black area.
- If the effect is a persistent patch or the control has no effect, use the manufacturer’s exact-model support instructions.
The most defensible expectation is improvement, not elimination. Local dimming is the first and most relevant control to test, but the best setting is model- and scene-dependent. A careful A/B comparison lets you decide whether less visible halos are worth any reduction in tiny-highlight brightness or shadow detail on your particular Mini LED TV.
