To reduce battery use from a high-refresh-rate display, switch to a fixed 60 Hz mode or turn off the phone’s high-refresh setting. On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, choose Standard under Motion smoothness; on supported Pixels, turn off Smooth Display. If you still see fast drain, check battery use by app before restricting background activity, then review brightness, screen timeout, and other display features.
Choose a refresh-rate mode that fits your priorities
A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and animation look smoother, but it uses more battery. Samsung says its Standard mode runs at 60 Hz and provides the best battery life, while its High mode uses more power. Google likewise notes that Pixel’s Smooth Display increases battery usage. Neither manufacturer gives a universal percentage for the battery you will save by changing the setting; results depend on the phone, apps, settings, and operating conditions.

These labels are not interchangeable across manufacturers. Samsung documents Standard, Adaptive, and High modes; Pixel documentation describes Smooth Display and lists supported rates by model.

- Open Settings > Display & touch > Smooth Display.
- Turn Smooth Display off if the option is available.
Google says Smooth Display can raise the refresh rate automatically for supported content. Availability and maximum rates vary by model: Google lists up to 120 Hz on Pixel 8a and Pixel Fold, 1–120 Hz on Pixel 8 Pro, and up to 90 Hz on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a. These are model-specific capabilities, not an Android-wide standard. Google also says Battery Saver disables Smooth Display.

Change the setting on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings and search for Motion smoothness, or go to Settings > Display > Motion smoothness on supported models.
- Choose Standard to use 60 Hz when battery life is the priority.
- If you want a compromise and your model offers it, choose Adaptive. Samsung describes this mode as adjusting the refresh rate dynamically up to 120 Hz.
Some Galaxy phones offer a High option that can hold the display at 90 or 120 Hz and uses more battery. The available modes and rates depend on the model. Samsung says Power saving mode may set refresh rate to Standard.
Find the equivalent setting on other Android phones
Menu names and controls vary, and Pixel or Galaxy instructions may not apply to another manufacturer’s phone. Open Settings and search for refresh rate, motion, or display. Confirm the available options and their effects in the manufacturer’s support information or your phone’s manual; exact paths and behavior for every Android brand are not established here.

Check what is using battery before restricting apps
Pixel
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage and review app and system details. Google says Pixel 6 and later also have Battery diagnostics. Keep an app’s battery use set to Optimized unless you have a specific reason to change it: restricting background use can affect app behavior and notifications. Google notes that a new or reset Pixel may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns, and extra drain for a few days after an update can be normal while software is optimized.

Go to Settings > Battery > View details to see app usage. Check which apps or services account for the drain before changing their background settings.

Review other display settings
- Lower screen brightness, or enable Adaptive brightness if you prefer the phone to adjust it automatically.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
- Turn off Always-on Display, or use a limited display schedule if your phone supports one.
- Turn off live wallpapers if you use them.
These settings and their availability vary by device. Samsung’s battery guidance notes that consumption also varies with settings, operating conditions, and installed apps.
