The most effective way to reduce battery and mobile-data use is to stop following games or teams you do not need. If you want to keep live scores, leave Live Activities enabled but turn off More Frequent Updates, use Wi‑Fi or a strong cellular signal, select 5G Auto where available, and use Low Power Mode during long games. Then check Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage to see whether the Sports app is actually a major contributor on your iPhone.
What Apple Sports Live Activities are doing
A Live Activity is a system display for information that is changing now. A sports app can keep a game’s score and status current on the Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, or other supported surfaces while the iPhone has network connectivity. The app can send updates through Apple’s ActivityKit and Live Activities push-notification system.
Unlike a one-time notification, a Live Activity remains available as a current status surface while the event is active. That convenience means the phone may continue receiving network updates for as long as the game is being followed. The exact frequency is controlled by the app and its Live Activities options, so there is no universal battery or data cost for every game.
Following a game or team in Apple Sports is separate from the permission that allows the app to show Live Activities. Unfollowing removes the reason for that particular activity to run. Turning off the permission prevents the app from presenting Live Activities even if you continue to use the app manually. Notifications are another source of device wake-ups and can add to the total cost.

Apple’s interface guidance expects sports apps to give people a way to stop following a game or team. If the app does not provide a usable control, Apple says Live Activities can be turned off in Settings. This gives you two levels of control: remove individual games or teams inside Sports, or block the app’s Live Activities altogether.
Choose the right compromise
There is no single best setting. Your choice depends on how quickly you need a score, how much mobile data you can spare, how often you are willing to open the app, and how important maximum battery runtime is. A person watching one game on Wi‑Fi has a different sensible setup from someone traveling all day through weak cellular coverage.
| Setup | Score immediacy | Battery impact | Cellular-data exposure | Interruptions | Manual checking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Follow games with Live Activities and More Frequent Updates on | Highest | Highest of these options | Highest when away from Wi‑Fi | Potentially higher | Lowest |
| Follow games with Live Activities on and More Frequent Updates off | Normal live updates | Lower than frequent updates | Lower than frequent updates, especially on Wi‑Fi | Controlled by notification settings | Low |
| Unfollow games or teams but keep the app available | Only when you open Sports | Lower because unwanted activities are not started | Lower background exposure | Lower | Moderate |
| Turn off Sports Live Activities in Settings | No Lock Screen or Dynamic Island activity | Lowest for Live Activities | Lowest for Live Activities | Lowest for Live Activities | Highest |
For most people, the middle row is the practical starting point: keep the games that matter, leave More Frequent Updates off, and use Wi‑Fi whenever possible. It preserves a glanceable score without deliberately requesting the most frequent refresh behavior.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If you are trying to conserve mobile data as well as battery, the important comparison is not simply “on” versus “off.” Every followed game adds another possible activity, while a weak signal can increase radio-related battery use even when the score payload itself is small. Removing inactive follows and avoiding frequent-update mode limits both unnecessary activity and the occasions on which the phone must maintain connectivity.
Step-by-step ways to reduce use
1. Unfollow games and teams you do not need
- Open Apple Sports.
- Open the followed games or teams area. Depending on the iOS release, the control may be shown on the game page, team page, or a menu for followed items.
- Unfollow completed games, teams you no longer want, or games you are not actively watching.
- Confirm that the item disappears from your followed list.
Unfollowing is preferable to leaving many inactive games running because it removes the app’s own reason to start those activities. Menu names can differ between iOS releases, so look for Follow, Following, or Unfollow controls on the relevant game or team page.
Check both kinds of follows when troubleshooting. A game may still appear because the team remains followed, even after the individual game is removed. Clearing completed games and teams you only followed temporarily is a simple maintenance habit before a long trip or a day when battery life matters.
2. Turn off Live Activities for the sports app
Use this when you want no score activity from Sports, even if you still browse scores in the app.
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to the sports app, then open its settings page. On some releases, you may reach the same controls through Settings > Apps and the app name.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Turn the feature off.
The exact Settings layout can vary by iOS version and region. If a Live Activities switch is not shown, first check that the app is installed and updated, and remove unwanted follows inside the app. Turning off this permission stops the app from presenting a Live Activity; it does not prevent you from opening Sports and checking a score.
This is an app-level switch, not a global ban on every app’s Live Activities. Disabling it for Sports therefore leaves you free to keep Live Activities enabled for another app that you consider important.

3. Keep More Frequent Updates off
More Frequent Updates is an app-level Live Activities option. When enabled, the activity can refresh more often. That improves immediacy but uses more battery, so it is a poor choice when conservation is the goal. MacRumors’ documentation of the iOS 16.2 behavior notes that the feature increases update frequency and drains an iPhone battery faster.
- Open Settings.
- Open the sports app’s settings page.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Leave More Frequent Updates turned off.
This setting was documented for Live Activities behavior introduced with iOS 16.2. If the switch is absent on your device, the app or your iOS release may not expose it. Do not assume that enabling it improves every score update; it trades longer-lasting battery for potentially more frequent refreshes.
It is also unnecessary to enable the option for every followed team merely because one match is important. If you choose to test it, limit the change to the app and period you actually want to compare, then turn it back off when the game ends.
4. Prefer Wi‑Fi and avoid weak signals
When you are at home, work, or another trusted location, connect to Wi‑Fi before a long game. Apple states that Wi‑Fi uses less battery than mobile networks. A weak cellular signal can also increase battery use because the iPhone works harder to maintain connectivity and search for service.
- Use a stable Wi‑Fi network for the game rather than leaving the phone on marginal cellular coverage.
- If Wi‑Fi is unreliable, move to a place with a stronger cellular signal instead of repeatedly forcing reconnects.
- Do not repeatedly toggle Airplane Mode or cellular data while expecting continuous live scores; those actions interrupt connectivity and can delay updates.
Wi‑Fi can reduce radio-related battery use, but it does not make the Live Activity free. The app can still receive updates and notifications while connected. A crowded or unstable Wi‑Fi network may also cause reconnects, so the practical goal is a stable connection, not simply the Wi‑Fi symbol.
5. Select 5G Auto when your iPhone and plan support it
5G Auto lets the iPhone use 5G when it provides a noticeably better experience and switch to LTE when it does not. Apple describes this as a way to save battery compared with forcing 5G continuously.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Service (called Cellular in some regions).
- Tap Mobile Data Options or Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Select 5G Auto.
The option requires a compatible iPhone, carrier, and 5G service. If it is not available, use the network mode your carrier provides and concentrate on Wi‑Fi, signal quality, and the Live Activities settings. 5G Auto is a network-efficiency choice; it does not disable Sports updates or reduce the number of games you follow.
6. Use Low Power Mode for long games or travel
Low Power Mode is useful when you need the phone to last through a match, commute, or day away from a charger. On current iOS versions, Apple’s path is Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. You can also add Low Power Mode to Control Centre for faster access.
Apple says Low Power Mode reduces or disables several kinds of background work, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. It does not turn off a Live Activity automatically, so disable the activity separately if you want scores to stop appearing. Live score updates may be less useful when your priority is maximum runtime, particularly if you also have frequent notifications or poor coverage.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Reduce unnecessary notification wakes
Notifications can wake the iPhone. If Sports alerts are more frequent than you need, adjust them in the app’s notification settings rather than disabling every notification on the phone.
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Select the sports app.
- Turn off alert types you do not need, or disable notifications entirely while conserving battery.
Keep only the alerts that provide information you would otherwise check manually. This reduces interruptions even when a Live Activity remains enabled. Notification controls and Live Activities controls are separate, so reducing alerts does not necessarily remove a score from the Lock Screen, and turning off the Live Activity does not automatically change every notification preference.
How to measure the real impact on your iPhone
Apple does not publish a universal battery percentage or megabytes-per-game figure for Apple Sports Live Activities. The result varies with update frequency, signal quality, Wi‑Fi versus cellular use, notifications, iPhone model, and how long the activity stays active. Measure your own phone instead of relying on a promised number.
- Before changing anything, open Settings > Battery.
- Tap View All Battery Usage.
- Select the day you want to inspect.
- Find the Sports app in the list and open its details.
- Review the app’s daily usage and activity categories, including background activity, cellular coverage, and notifications when those categories are shown.
- Record what you changed, then compare a similar game or time period after the change.
Apple’s Battery screen compares daily usage and lists the apps and system activities using the most battery. Tapping an app shows its daily usage and activity, helping you distinguish a Sports issue from a day dominated by another app, screen time, or poor coverage.
Recommended Free Tools
Change one major setting at a time when possible. For example, compare one game with More Frequent Updates off against a similar game with it on, or compare a day with Live Activities enabled against a day when they are disabled. A busy day with weak coverage is not a clean comparison with a short game on Wi‑Fi.
The Battery screen shows where usage occurred; it does not prove that every percentage came from score data itself. Cellular coverage, screen time, notifications, and other apps can dominate the same period. Use the Sports entry as evidence of whether the app is significant, not as a fixed measure that applies to every iPhone.
What to do when the settings do not behave as expected
Sports still appears after you unfollowed a game
Open Sports again and check both the game and team follow lists. An activity may be associated with a team follow rather than a single game. Remove every unwanted follow, then close and reopen the app. If you want a guaranteed stop, use the app’s Live Activities permission in Settings.
There is no Live Activities switch
Check the app-specific Settings page and look under the current Apps section if your iOS release uses that layout. Update iOS and the app if updates are available. If the control still does not appear, use the app’s own unfollow controls and manage notifications instead; not every app or release exposes every option.

Battery use remains high with Live Activities off
Use the Battery screen to identify the source. If Sports is not near the top, the Live Activity is unlikely to be the main cause. Look for poor cellular coverage, heavy screen use, navigation, video, or another app’s background activity. Low Power Mode can reduce several background tasks while you investigate.
Mobile-data use is higher than expected
Make sure the iPhone is actually connected to Wi‑Fi and that the cellular signal is not dropping repeatedly. Leave More Frequent Updates off, unfollow inactive games, and inspect the Sports entry in the Battery screen for cellular-related activity. Live Activities do not provide a published per-game data allowance, so your own usage history is the reliable check.
Scores arrive late
Delayed scores can result from weak coverage, an unavailable network, Low Power Mode restrictions, or the app’s normal update behavior. If immediacy matters for one game, use a stable connection and keep only that game followed. Do not enable More Frequent Updates for every team as a first response; it increases update frequency and battery use.
The activity continues after a game ends
Check whether the team or another related game is still followed. Remove completed follows and reopen Sports. If the activity remains and you do not need any score surface, turn off Sports Live Activities in Settings; that is more decisive than waiting for the app to stop presenting the activity on its own.

You want a glanceable score during one game
Follow only that game, keep Live Activities enabled, leave More Frequent Updates off, and use Wi‑Fi or 5G Auto. Turn off unrelated Sports notifications so other events do not wake the phone. When the game is over, unfollow it if you do not need the activity to remain available.
You are traveling and need the phone to last
Unfollow games you will not watch, disable Sports Live Activities if a score is not essential, select 5G Auto, and enable Low Power Mode. Avoid weak-signal areas where possible and verify the result in Settings > Battery. If you must follow one game, keep only that game active and leave More Frequent Updates off.
You want no background score activity at all
Turn off Live Activities for the sports app in Settings and remove unwanted follows inside Sports. You can still open the app manually when you decide to check a score. This gives up glanceable updates but minimizes Live Activity-related battery, data exposure, and interruptions.
You are on Wi‑Fi but still concerned about battery
Keep only necessary games followed, leave More Frequent Updates off, and reduce unnecessary notifications. Wi‑Fi generally uses less battery than mobile networks, but the screen, notifications, and other background tasks can still dominate usage. Check the Sports entry in Battery rather than assuming every drain comes from score updates.

How can I keep sports scores but use less mobile data?
Follow only the games you care about, keep More Frequent Updates off, and prefer a stable Wi‑Fi connection. If you are using cellular service, 5G Auto and a strong signal can reduce radio-related battery cost. Apple does not publish a fixed megabytes-per-game figure, so check your own usage and battery records.
What does More Frequent Updates do?
It is an app-level Live Activities option that allows more frequent refreshes. That can make score information more immediate, but it also drains an iPhone battery faster. Leave it off when conservation is the priority.
Will Low Power Mode turn off my live score?
No. Low Power Mode reduces or disables several background features, but it does not automatically turn off a Live Activity. Disable Sports Live Activities separately if you want the score activity to stop.

Is Wi‑Fi always enough to prevent battery drain?
No. Apple says Wi‑Fi uses less battery than mobile networks, but the Live Activity can still receive updates and notifications. Screen use, notification frequency, weak Wi‑Fi, cellular fallback, and other apps can also affect the result.
How can I tell whether Sports is really the problem?
Open Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage, select a day, and inspect the Sports entry and its activity categories. Compare similar periods after changing one setting. The screen provides evidence for your iPhone, not a universal per-game measurement.
Bottom line
Start by removing unnecessary follows. If you keep live scores, turn off More Frequent Updates, prefer Wi‑Fi and a strong signal, use 5G Auto where supported, and enable Low Power Mode when runtime matters more than background convenience. Use Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage to confirm which change helps on your particular iPhone.
