You can lower an AI inference bill without switching models by reducing unnecessary input and output tokens, reusing stable prompt prefixes, routing delay-tolerant work to discounted processing, and measuring cost per successful task. Make one change at a time, then compare dollars, quality, latency, retries, and cache behavior on representative requests.
Prices, cache rules, discounts, and endpoint eligibility vary by provider and change frequently. Use the current pricing and feature documentation for the exact model and endpoint before forecasting savings.
Start with a bill and usage baseline
Optimization is only useful when you can prove that a change reduced the cost of a completed task rather than merely reducing a token counter. Create a baseline for each important workload—such as document extraction, support replies, classification, or code generation—using representative production-like inputs.
Capture these fields for every request
- Model, endpoint, region or service tier, and date.
- Input tokens, separately identifying cached input tokens when the provider reports them.
- Output tokens and any configured output limit.
- Number of calls, retries, timeouts, and failed attempts.
- Wall-clock latency, including time to first token when relevant.
- Actual billed input, cached-input, and output rates.
- Task result: correct, acceptable with editing, or failed according to a defined quality test.
Calculate at least two measures: cost per API call and cost per successful task. The second includes retries and human rework, so it prevents an aggressive token cut from appearing profitable when it causes more failures.

Use a representative evaluation set
Keep a fixed sample of normal, difficult, and edge-case requests. Record expected fields, factual checks, policy checks, or a human score appropriate to the workload. Run the same sample before and after each change. A shorter answer that omits a required field is not a saving if the request must be repeated.
OpenAI’s cost-optimization guidance recommends minimizing tokens and generating only the output needed for the task. Apply that principle to your measured workload rather than assuming a universal percentage reduction: OpenAI cost optimization guidance.
Reduce input tokens without removing necessary context
Token accounting is usually the fastest controllable lever in a token-priced API. Input and output are separate cost drivers, so inspect them separately instead of treating a request as one undifferentiated unit.
Remove repetition and irrelevant history
- Delete instructions that do not affect the current answer.
- Do not send the same reference passage multiple times in one request.
- Trim conversation history to the turns needed to resolve the current task.
- Retrieve only the documents or sections relevant to the question instead of attaching an entire corpus.
- Replace verbose prose instructions with a short, unambiguous checklist when evaluation shows no quality loss.
Keep information that controls safety, format, business rules, or factual accuracy. A token saved from a required constraint can increase retries or manual correction and raise total cost.
Control retrieval and document context
For retrieval-augmented systems, measure the number of chunks, their average length, and how often each chunk contributes to a correct answer. Set a maximum context budget, then test whether fewer or shorter chunks preserve the required recall. Deduplicate overlapping passages and remove boilerplate metadata that the model does not use.
Ask for only the output the task needs
Output tokens can be as important as input tokens. Request a concise structured response when the consumer needs fields rather than an essay. Define a schema or a bounded list of fields, and set an output limit that is high enough for valid results but prevents runaway generations. Test truncation and malformed responses explicitly; a limit that causes retries can cost more than a slightly larger successful response.

Make repeated prompt prefixes cacheable
Prompt caching can reduce the price of reused input, but it does not discount generated output and does not guarantee a hit merely because requests belong to the same conversation. The provider, model, minimum prefix requirements, cache lifetime, write charge, and telemetry determine whether it pays off.
Put stable material first
- Place fixed system instructions, policy text, tool definitions, and reusable schemas at the beginning of the prompt.
- Put changing user content, timestamps, request IDs, and other variables after that shared prefix.
- Keep whitespace, ordering, and serialization stable so equivalent prefixes remain identical under the provider’s matching rules.
- Send enough repeated traffic for the cache to amortize any write or storage charge.
- Inspect cache-read and cache-write fields in usage telemetry; do not infer a hit from session continuity.
OpenAI says prompt caching is enabled by default for supported models and describes discounts of up to 95% for cached input in its current guide. “Up to 95%” is a provider- and model-dependent maximum for the eligible cached portion, not a promise that total request cost will fall by 95%: OpenAI Prompt caching.
Anthropic’s pricing documentation describes cache reads at 10% of the standard input price and cache-write multipliers that vary with cache duration. Verify the current model-specific rates and duration before calculating a break-even point: Anthropic Claude Platform pricing.
Calculate cache break-even
For a rough calculation, compare the cost of an uncached prefix on every request with the first-write charge plus the cached-read charge on later requests during the cache lifetime. Include the provider’s minimum cacheable length, expiration behavior, and any regional or endpoint conditions. If a prefix is reused only once or twice, a write premium or short lifetime can erase the apparent discount. If it is reused many times, the lower read rate may dominate.
Track these quantities by workload:
- Stable-prefix tokens per request.
- Number of requests using the same prefix before expiration.
- Cache writes, cache reads, and cache misses.
- Uncached and cached input prices for the exact model.
- Output cost, retries, and quality after caching.
Use batch or flex processing for work that can wait
Urgency is a cost dimension. Providers may offer a discounted asynchronous Batch API or a flex-style processing option for workloads that tolerate delayed completion. Eligibility, discount, completion window, rate limits, and latency differ by model and endpoint, so check the current terms before moving traffic.

Do not confuse request batching with discounted batch pricing
Combining multiple logical items in one request can reduce per-request overhead on an endpoint that supports it, but it does not by itself prove that billed token volume or per-token rates are lower. A provider’s Batch API is a separate processing and pricing mechanism. Read the documented behavior for the endpoint and confirm how inputs, outputs, errors, and retries are billed.
OpenAI publishes current pricing and batch details in its pricing documentation, while its cost guidance explains choosing lower-cost processing for delay-tolerant work: OpenAI API pricing and cost optimization. Anthropic discusses cost and intelligence trade-offs, including processing choices, in its optimization guide: Anthropic optimizing for cost and intelligence.
Design a safe asynchronous workflow
- Assign each item a durable identifier and store the input, prompt version, and expected output schema.
- Submit only jobs that meet the endpoint’s model and size limits.
- Record submission time, completion time, status, token usage, and billed cost.
- Retry failed items individually where the provider’s rules permit, rather than resubmitting the whole batch.
- Validate outputs before marking the task complete and compare cost per successful item with the synchronous baseline.

Check provider and endpoint conditions before forecasting
For each candidate configuration, record the complete pricing and service context. A price copied from a different model, region, or endpoint can invalidate the forecast.
- Uncached input, cached input, cache-write, and output prices.
- Minimum prompt or cache thresholds and cache duration.
- Supported models and endpoints.
- Batch or flex discount, completion window, and availability.
- Concurrency, queue, and rate limits.
- Regional, account, or service-tier conditions.
- Observed quality, retries, and total cost per completed task.
OpenAI’s production guidance also covers operational controls such as rate limits and reliability considerations that affect retries and throughput: OpenAI production best practices. Because provider pricing and features are volatile, recheck these pages at launch and whenever a model, endpoint, or service tier changes.
Optimize a self-hosted deployment separately
If you run the fixed model on your own infrastructure, the cost equation is different from a managed API bill. Compare total cost per successful task, including compute utilization, memory, electricity or hosting, engineering time, operations, throughput, latency, and quality.

Batching and utilization
Dynamic batching can improve hardware utilization when requests have compatible latency targets, but larger batches can increase queue time or memory pressure. Benchmark realistic traffic rather than a maximum-throughput synthetic test.

Change one variable at a time
- Freeze the model, evaluation set, and accounting period.
- Choose one intervention, such as removing a redundant context block or stabilizing a prefix.
- Run the baseline and treatment on the same representative requests.
- Compare input and output tokens, cache behavior, latency, retries, quality, and billed cost.
- Keep the change only when cost per successful task improves without violating quality or latency limits.
Changing prompts, endpoint, batch mode, and concurrency simultaneously makes attribution difficult. If an experiment needs several coordinated changes, document them as one treatment and retain a clean baseline.
Use guardrails and a rollback path
- Set a minimum quality score or required-field pass rate.
- Set maximum acceptable latency and retry thresholds.
- Alert on cache-hit collapse, token spikes, or unexpected billing rates.
- Canary the change on a small traffic percentage before full rollout.
- Keep the previous prompt and routing configuration ready to restore.
Review savings after traffic mix changes. A cache that works for a high-volume repeated prefix may deliver little value when users start sending mostly unique prompts. Likewise, a batch discount can look attractive until the queue misses a business deadline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Assuming a maximum discount is typical
“Up to 95%” for eligible cached input is not a 95% reduction in the entire request, and Anthropic’s 10% cache-read figure applies to the documented cached-input price relationship, not output or uncached tokens. Use your observed hit rate and current rates.

Trimming until quality fails
Removing context can lower the first-call bill while increasing retries, escalations, or manual correction. Judge the end-to-end task, not just token volume.
Expecting conversation history to create a cache hit
Cache matching follows provider-specific rules. Stable ordering and a persistent session do not guarantee reuse. Confirm hits in usage data.
Calling every multi-item request “batching”
A single request containing several items and a provider’s discounted asynchronous Batch API may have different limits and billing. Verify the endpoint’s published semantics.
Ignoring operational limits
Lower unit prices do not help if concurrency limits cause queueing, timeouts, or a retry storm. Include rate limits and completion windows in the experiment.
A practical decision sequence
- Account: establish per-task token, retry, latency, and billed-cost baselines.
- Simplify: remove irrelevant context and bound the output, validating quality.
- Stabilize: move reusable instructions and schemas into a stable prefix and verify cache telemetry.
- Schedule: send delay-tolerant work to an eligible batch or flex path after checking current terms.
- Engineer: for self-hosted systems, benchmark batching, quantization, utilization, and cache-aware serving as a separate project.
- Roll out: canary the winning change with quality, latency, cost, and rollback guardrails.
This sequence keeps the selected model fixed while exposing the largest controllable cost drivers first. It also prevents a nominal unit-price reduction from hiding a worse result for the people or systems that depend on the output.
