You can reduce AI API spending by measuring where tokens and requests go, then testing smaller models, leaner prompts, caching, and lower-cost processing modes against your quality and latency requirements. The often-quoted 95% figure needs careful context: OpenAI documents discounts of up to 95% on eligible cached input tokens—not a guaranteed 95% reduction in an entire API bill. Whether your total spend can fall that far depends on your workload and how much of it qualifies for savings.
Start by finding what is driving your API bill
Before changing prompts or models, separate usage by model, input tokens, cached input tokens where applicable, output tokens, and processing mode. Also record request volume and the task each request serves. This gives you a baseline to compare against and helps distinguish a token-price problem from excessive request volume or unnecessarily large outputs.
Use current model-specific rates from OpenAI’s API pricing page to estimate spend for your actual input/output mix. Rates and processing options can change, so old price comparisons may no longer reflect what your workload costs. For every proposed change, compare cost alongside the task’s quality and response-time requirements.
Reduce requests and tokens without losing useful context
OpenAI’s cost-optimization guidance recommends limiting requests, minimizing input tokens, and keeping outputs concise. Start with the work each call needs to do: remove redundant instructions, unused context, and unnecessary repeat calls, then set output expectations appropriate to the task.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Smaller prompts and shorter responses can lower cost and latency, but the shortest version is not necessarily the best one. Test representative examples and check that the model still has enough context and produces complete, accurate results. If a task needs detail, a shorter answer that triggers retries or requires correction may not be a real saving.
Choose a less expensive model only if it meets your quality target
A lower-cost model can reduce per-request spending, but it may not perform as well on every task. OpenAI frames model selection as balancing cost and latency while maintaining accuracy. Benchmark candidate models on representative inputs and evaluate the outputs against the requirements that matter in production before shifting traffic.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Compare like with like: use the same task examples and output expectations, then consider both price and response time. If a cheaper model needs more retries, human correction, or extra context to reach acceptable results, include those costs in the decision.
Use prompt caching when requests share a stable prefix
Prompt caching can reduce the cost of repeated input when requests share a matching prompt prefix. OpenAI’s prompt-caching guide describes the mechanism this way: “Prompt caching reuses work when requests share the same prompt prefix.” It is most relevant when traffic repeatedly sends stable instructions or reusable context; one-off requests and prompts that change substantially may offer less opportunity.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The documented discount is up to 95% for eligible cached input tokens. That figure applies to a token category, not necessarily to all input, output, or total API spend. Keep reusable material in the shared prefix, inspect actual cached-token usage, and calculate the effect on the whole bill rather than assuming every request gets a cache hit.
Match processing mode to how quickly the result is needed
Batch API for work that can run asynchronously
For grouped requests that do not need an immediate response, the Batch API guide describes costs 50% lower than synchronous APIs and a 24-hour turnaround window. Offline evaluations and enrichment jobs may fit when that delay is acceptable. The savings are useful only if the workflow can tolerate asynchronous completion; verify current terms before relying on them.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Flex for lower-priority requests
OpenAI’s cost guidance describes Flex processing as lower cost in exchange for slower responses and occasional resource unavailability. That trade-off may suit work that is not time-sensitive, but it makes Flex a poor default for calls that must respond quickly or be consistently available. Keep latency-sensitive traffic on a mode that meets its service requirements.
Estimate savings with a workload-based comparison
Evaluate each lever using the same workload assumptions. A useful estimate accounts for request count; average input and output tokens; the portion of input that is actually cached; the selected model; and whether requests run synchronously, through Batch, or with Flex. Apply the current rates for those categories from the pricing page rather than multiplying the entire bill by the largest advertised discount.
