The most reliable way to reduce AI-agent cost is to measure spend per completed task, then remove repeated work in three places: cache the stable prefix of requests, retrieve only the evidence needed for the current step, and route routine steps to smaller models. Keep a quality gate around every change. A lower token bill is not a saving if retries, incorrect answers, or human rework increase the cost of finishing the task.

Start with cost per completed task

A provider invoice shows total usage, but not why an agent spent it. Instrument each completed task so you can separate context replay, retrieval overhead, tool output, retries, and model choice.

Log the fields that explain spend

  • Task identifier and outcome: record whether the task succeeded, failed, was escalated, or needed human correction.
  • Token counts: capture uncached input, cache-write input, cache-read input, output, and retrieval payload tokens when the provider exposes them.
  • Latency: record time for retrieval, each model call, tool execution, retries, and the total task.
  • Model and routing decision: save the selected model, reasoning setting, escalation reason, and fallback path.
  • Context composition: measure stable-prefix length, changing user data, retrieved evidence, tool results, and retained trajectory content.
  • Cache behavior: log cache hits, misses, breakpoint identifiers, age of the cached entry, and invalidation events.
  • Tool activity: count calls, returned bytes or tokens, duplicate results, failures, and retries.
  • Quality score: use task-specific evaluation, such as exact-match fields, citation correctness, policy compliance, or human acceptance.

Use cost per successful task as the primary metric:

Track the distribution, not only the average. A small number of long trajectories or repeated failures can dominate the 95th-percentile cost while the mean looks healthy.

How context caching cuts repeated input

Prompt caching reuses an unchanged rendered prefix. OpenAI describes it as preserving “the unchanged tokens at the beginning of a prompt.” The cached portion can include system and developer instructions, tool definitions, schemas, and conversation history. A change before the provider’s cache breakpoint can invalidate the reusable suffix, so ordering is an economic decision, not just a formatting preference.

Put stable material first

  1. Place durable system instructions and policy text first.
  2. Follow with stable developer instructions, tool definitions, JSON schemas, and persistent reference material.
  3. Insert explicit cache breakpoints where the provider supports them.
  4. Append the current user request, account-specific state, retrieved passages, and newly generated tool results after those breakpoints.
  5. Keep tool names, definitions, schema shapes, and ordering stable across calls. When the agent should use fewer tools for a particular step, prefer allowed-tools or tool-choice controls instead of deleting definitions from the prompt.

This layout lets a request reuse the expensive prefix while changing only the small tail. It also makes misses diagnosable: compare the rendered prefix and identify the first token or object that differs.

Understand cache-write and cache-read economics

OpenAI documents cache writes at 1.25 times the uncached input price on the cited GPT-5.6-family pricing and cache reads at 0.1 times on most GPT-5.6-and-newer models. The cited GPT-6.1 Sol rate is 0.05 times. Output pricing is separate and does not become cheaper merely because the input prefix is cached.

Pricing component Documented multiplier or rate What it means
Uncached input 1.0× input price Every token is processed at the normal input rate.
Cache write 1.25× input price The first request that establishes the reusable prefix costs more than a normal input pass.
Cache read on most GPT-5.6+ models 0.1× input price Subsequent requests can process the reused prefix at one-tenth of the uncached input rate.
Cache read on GPT-6.1 Sol 0.05× input price The reused prefix is charged at five percent of the uncached input rate.

At a 0.1× read rate, ten requests containing the same eligible prefix cost 2.15 input-pass equivalents with caching: 1.25 for the initial write plus 0.9 for nine reads. Without caching, the same ten requests cost 10 input passes. This comparison covers input only; changing tails, output tokens, retrieval, and tool calls still add their own charges.

Keep the cache alive without serving stale instructions

OpenAI recommends deterministic breakpoints and reports that a minimum 30-minute time-to-live improves reuse for the GPT-5.6 family. Treat that as a documented operating condition, not a universal guarantee: the effective lifetime, minimum prefix length, and invalidation rules are model-specific. Expire or rebuild a cache when policy text, tool schemas, permissions, or reference documents change. Never trade correctness for a higher hit rate.

Diagnose cache misses

  • Compare serialized prompts, including whitespace and ordering, at the first differing position.
  • Check whether a timestamp, request ID, rotating nonce, or user data was accidentally placed in the prefix.
  • Verify that tool definitions were not rebuilt in a different order.
  • Confirm that the prefix meets the provider’s minimum cacheable length.
  • Inspect the cache age and breakpoint identifier before concluding that the provider failed to reuse it.
  • Separate a genuine cache miss from a short changing tail that is simply being billed as normal input.

Current OpenAI short-context price reference

The following OpenAI prices are per 1 million tokens and are identified as current in the 2026 pricing information cited for this guide. They show input, cached input, and output; they do not include retrieval, tool, storage, or regional charges.

Model Input / 1M tokens Cached input / 1M tokens Output / 1M tokens
GPT-6 Astra $5 $0.50 $25
GPT-6.1 Sol $1 $0.05 $5
GPT-6 Luna $0.05 $0.005 $0.25

Use these figures to model an architecture, not to promise a bill. A long answer can cost more than a large cached prefix, and a failed tool call can make a nominally cheap model expensive per successful task.

Use retrieval to avoid replaying a corpus

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) lowers token usage when it replaces a full document set or an entire prior conversation with a small, relevant evidence set for the current step. Retrieval is not automatically cheaper: oversized chunks, duplicated passages, low-quality search results, and repeated embedding or reranking work can erase the benefit.

A selective retrieval loop

  1. Define the step’s information need. A contract-clause extraction step needs the governing clause, not every document attached to the matter.
  2. Form a focused query. Include the entity, action, date, and constraint that distinguish the needed evidence.
  3. Retrieve candidate passages. Keep the candidate set bounded and remove duplicates before sending it to the model.
  4. Filter for authority and freshness. Prefer the current policy or primary record; mark superseded material so it cannot silently override current instructions.
  5. Pack evidence compactly. Preserve headings, source identifiers, and the minimum surrounding text needed to interpret each passage.
  6. Ask for grounded output. Require the model to cite the supplied evidence or state that the evidence is insufficient.
  7. Measure the result. Compare retrieved-token volume, answer quality, latency, and retry rate with the full-context baseline.

Trim the trajectory before the next call

Agents often resend tool output that is no longer useful. Before each model call, summarize durable facts, discard duplicate payloads, remove expired search results, and retain only the decision-relevant fields from large API responses. Keep raw results in external storage when auditability requires them, but do not replay them by default.

The AgentDiet study (2025) reports 39.9%–59.7% lower input-token use and 21.1%–35.9% lower total computational cost while maintaining performance on its evaluated workloads across two language models and two benchmarks. Those ranges are study results, not a guaranteed saving for every agent. Reproduce the measurement on your task mix, especially if your workflow depends on long legal, medical, or operational context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize retrieval failure modes

  • Missing evidence: broaden the query or add a fallback that asks for clarification instead of guessing.
  • Stale evidence: attach effective dates and invalidate indexes when source documents change.
  • Context dilution: reduce the number of passages or summarize them before generation.
  • Conflicting passages: rank authoritative and current sources first and require the model to surface unresolved conflicts.
  • Repeated retrieval: cache stable search results for a short, explicit period only when source freshness permits it.

Route routine work to smaller models

Use a cheaper model for predictable, bounded work when an evaluation shows that quality remains acceptable. Suitable candidates include intent classification, field extraction, routing, short summaries, format validation, and simple tool-argument generation. Escalate difficult reasoning, multi-document synthesis, ambiguous requests, and safety-critical decisions to a stronger model.

Design a quality gate

  1. Build a representative test set containing normal, borderline, adversarial, and multilingual cases.
  2. Define acceptance checks before changing the router: factual accuracy, schema validity, refusal behavior, citation support, and human-review rate.
  3. Run the smaller model on the test set and record both errors and cost per accepted result.
  4. Escalate when confidence is low, required evidence is missing, the output fails validation, or the task falls outside the model’s tested scope.
  5. Sample production decisions continuously and revise the test set with newly discovered failures.

OpenAI summarizes the architectural rationale this way: “Use cases that once required a frontier model at every step can now achieve comparable or better results at a fraction of the cost by using smaller models, tuning reasoning effort, and making efficient architectural choices.” The practical implication is to optimize the whole workflow, not to force every call onto the least expensive model.

Use escalation instead of one-shot model selection

A two-stage route is often safer than selecting a model from the user’s first message alone. Let a small model classify the task and produce a structured plan. Run the selected operation on the smallest model that passed evaluation. Escalate only when the validator detects a defect or when the task’s policy label requires stronger reasoning. Record the escalation reason so routing can be improved rather than becoming an invisible cost multiplier.

Provider or documentation set Documented caching behavior Questions to verify for your workload
OpenAI Reusable prefixes, explicit breakpoints, documented cache-write and cache-read multipliers, and diagnostics for unexpected misses. The cited guidance recommends stable tool definitions and ordering; a 30-minute minimum TTL is reported for the GPT-5.6 family. Minimum prefix length, model-specific TTL, hit-rate fields, invalidation behavior, and any regional uplift.
Google Gemini Implicit caching is enabled by default for Gemini 2.5 and newer models; explicit caching is available on selected models through generateContent. Which models support explicit cache objects, retention duration, minimum tokens, and how cache usage appears in billing and telemetry.
Anthropic Documented cache durations include 5 minutes and 1 hour. In Anthropic’s measured workloads, no-caching cost ranged from 1.7× to 7.3× cached cost, depending on the agent task and model. Write and read prices, duration charges, minimum cacheable content, invalidation rules, and the match between your workload and the measured tasks.

For every candidate, evaluate six dimensions:

  • Reuse pattern: stable prefix, semantic retrieval, or reuse of an agent trajectory.
  • Control: implicit provider behavior versus explicit breakpoints or cache objects.
  • Economics: uncached input, cache-write, cache-read, output, storage or duration fees, and regional surcharges.
  • Freshness: TTL, invalidation, and behavior when tools or documents change.
  • Quality risk: stale context, missing retrieval evidence, or smaller-model errors.
  • Operations: hit-rate visibility, diagnostics, latency, retries, and per-task accounting.

An implementation plan you can roll out safely

Phase 1: Baseline and segment

  1. Choose representative tasks by volume and by cost, including long-running and failure-prone workflows.
  2. Instrument the fields listed in the baseline section.
  3. Group spend by step: planning, retrieval, tool use, synthesis, validation, and retries.
  4. Set a quality target and a maximum acceptable cost per accepted task for each group.

Phase 2: Stabilize and cache the prefix

  1. Render system instructions, developer rules, tools, schemas, and persistent references in a deterministic order.
  2. Move volatile values and user-specific content after the cache breakpoint.
  3. Enable the provider’s cache feature and capture hit or miss telemetry.
  4. Test policy, tool-schema, and reference-document changes to confirm that invalidation occurs when it should.
  5. Compare cost per successful task with caching enabled and disabled on the same workload.

Phase 3: Reduce retrieval and trajectory payloads

  1. Measure how many retrieved tokens each step actually uses.
  2. Remove duplicate and expired tool results before the next call.
  3. Require evidence identifiers and freshness metadata in retrieved context.
  4. Deploy selective retrieval to a controlled percentage of traffic, watching unsupported-answer and retry rates.

Phase 4: Add model routing

  1. Label steps that are classification, extraction, routing, summarization, validation, reasoning, synthesis, or safety-critical.
  2. Test a smaller model on the bounded categories first.
  3. Add structured validation and an escalation path to a stronger model.
  4. Monitor quality and cost by route, not just by application total.

Phase 5: Operate the economics continuously

Run an A/B test on representative workloads wherever the provider permits caching to be toggled. Compare accepted-task cost, latency, cache hit rate, retrieval volume, escalation rate, and quality. Recheck model prices, cache rules, TTLs, and regional charges before making a financial forecast; these terms change over time.

Common mistakes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Cache hit rate is low despite repeated tasks. Dynamic values or reordered tools appear before the breakpoint. Make serialization deterministic and move volatile data to the tail.
Input tokens fall but total cost rises. The system performs extra retrieval, reranking, summaries, or retries. Measure the complete task path and include all auxiliary calls in the cost metric.
Answers cite old policies. Cached or retrieved reference material outlived its validity. Attach version and effective-date metadata and invalidate on source updates.
Smaller-model routing increases human review. The quality gate tests only easy examples. Add borderline and failure cases, then tighten escalation rules.
Long conversations become progressively more expensive. Expired trajectory content is replayed on every turn. Summarize durable state, discard redundant tool output, and retrieve old details only when needed.
Provider comparisons look contradictory. One provider reports cache duration or write charges differently from another. Normalize all figures to cost per accepted task and record duration, minimum length, and regional assumptions.

A practical decision framework

  • Use context caching when the same long instructions, tools, schemas, or reference prefix appears across many requests and can remain valid for the cache lifetime.
  • Use retrieval when the knowledge base is large, only a small subset is relevant per step, or freshness requires selecting current evidence rather than replaying a static corpus.
  • Use a smaller model when the step is bounded, objectively testable, and protected by validation and escalation.
  • Combine all three for agents with a stable operating policy, a changing knowledge base, and a mixture of routine and difficult steps.

The strongest designs do not optimize one token category in isolation. They keep stable state reusable, make changing evidence selective and current, and reserve expensive reasoning for decisions that genuinely need it.
