Deleting a digital Nintendo Switch game does not erase its purchase record. To download it again, open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu, choose the user linked to the Nintendo Account that bought the game, select the title, and set its virtual game card. The Switch downloads the software when it is online and has enough free storage.

Nintendo changed this process on April 30, 2025. Purchased games and add-on content now use Virtual Game Cards instead of the former Nintendo eShop redownload menu. Nintendo Switch Online-exclusive software and demos follow a separate route through their individual product pages.

What you need before starting

Redownloading is an ownership check, not a new purchase. The console must be able to identify the original Nintendo Account and the software must still be available for distribution. Before opening the menu, confirm these conditions:

  • The Nintendo Account that originally purchased the game is linked to a user on the Switch.
  • The console is connected to the internet.
  • The internal storage or an installed compatible microSD card has enough free space for the game and any required update.
  • Nintendo has not ended redownload distribution for the title or its add-on content.

The purchase remains associated with the original Nintendo Account even after the software is deleted. It is not transferred to another Nintendo Account, and deleting the icon from the HOME Menu does not create a refund or move ownership.

Use Virtual Game Cards to redownload a purchased game

This is the normal procedure for a standard paid digital game and its downloadable add-on content on current Switch software.

  1. From the Switch HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards.
  2. Select the user whose Nintendo Account made the purchase. If several people use the console, check each user rather than assuming the currently active profile bought the game.
  3. Review the titles associated with that account and select the deleted game or add-on content.
  4. Choose the command to set the title’s virtual game card. The Switch begins the download after the virtual game card is set.
  5. Leave the console connected to the internet and wait for the download and installation to finish. The game then appears on the HOME Menu and can be launched normally.

Menu wording can differ by region and system version. Nintendo’s cited support instructions are Japan-region pages, so an English-language console may use equivalent English labels rather than exactly the same text. The important path is the HOME Menu’s Virtual Game Cards area, the purchasing user, the title, and the command that sets its virtual game card.

Which type of software are you trying to recover?

The correct recovery path depends on how the software was obtained. Use this distinction before troubleshooting a missing title.

Software type Where to start What to verify
Standard paid digital game HOME Menu > Virtual Game Cards The purchasing Nintendo Account is linked and the title is still distributed.
Paid downloadable add-on content HOME Menu > Virtual Game Cards Select the account that bought the add-on, not merely the account that owns the base game.
Nintendo Switch Online-exclusive software The software’s individual product page Use that page’s download control; it is not handled like ordinary purchased software in Virtual Game Cards.
Demo The demo’s individual product page Open the product page and use its download control.

A demo or Switch Online-exclusive title can therefore be absent from the Virtual Game Cards list without indicating a lost purchase. Open the exact product page for that software instead.

If the game does not appear in Virtual Game Cards

Check every user on the console

Virtual Game Cards show software for the selected user. A family member or another profile may have made the purchase, so return to the user-selection step and check each Nintendo Account linked to the console. A game bought by one account does not become a purchase of another account merely because both users share the same Switch.

Confirm the account, not just the profile name

Two profiles can have similar names, and one person can maintain more than one Nintendo Account. Sign in with the account that received the purchase confirmation or appears in the original purchase history. Nintendo manages purchases at the account level; purchases cannot be moved to a different Nintendo Account.

Consider whether distribution ended

Nintendo can stop offering a title or add-on for redownload. If distribution has ended, the software may no longer appear as an available redownload even though the account previously obtained it. This is different from deleting a title while it remains distributed: deletion normally leaves the account record available for another download.

Look for a product-page download

If the missing item is a Nintendo Switch Online-exclusive application or a demo, use its individual product page. Those categories are intentionally separated from the standard purchased-software route.

Check the console’s connection and free space

A title can be selected successfully but fail to start or finish downloading when the Switch is offline or storage is insufficient. Reconnect to the internet, close software that is using the network if necessary, and check available storage in the console’s data-management settings. Free enough space for the download and installation; a large game may need more room temporarily than the final installed size.

Redownloading after moving to another Switch

Moving a user to a different console does not automatically place every purchased title on the destination Switch. After the transfer, link the same Nintendo Account on the new console and open Virtual Game Cards there. Select the transferred account, choose each purchased title, and set its virtual game card on the destination console.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

The transfer changes where the user is available; it does not replace the separate step that assigns a virtual game card to the new hardware. If a game is visible on the old console but missing on the new one, first verify that the intended Nintendo Account was transferred or linked, then perform the virtual-game-card setup on the destination system.

Redownloading after initializing or resetting the console

A console initialization removes local software data, but it does not change the purchase record held by the Nintendo Account. After the reset:

  1. Complete the Switch’s initial setup and connect it to the internet.
  2. Link the same Nintendo Account that originally purchased the software.
  3. Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu.
  4. Select the account and set the virtual game card for each title you want to reinstall.

Nintendo’s initialization guidance warns that software data stored on a microSD card becomes unusable after initialization. Deleted software can be downloaded again, but a reset does not automatically restore the old installation from that card.

Software is not the same as save data

A redownload reinstalls the game program and its downloadable content. It does not automatically recreate the save data that was on the console. Treat these as separate items:

  • Software: the game files and updates that let the title run. These can normally be downloaded again while the purchase remains available to the original account.
  • Save data: your progress and settings. Reinstalling the software does not, by itself, put deleted or lost saves back on the console.
  • microSD contents: removable storage may hold software data, but a console initialization can make that data unusable. A card provides capacity; it does not restore ownership or saves.

If the goal is to recover progress rather than merely reinstall the game, stop before deleting or initializing anything else and use the appropriate Nintendo save-data recovery option available for your account and console. The Virtual Game Cards procedure only addresses the software download.

Using a microSD card for a large redownload

The Switch can use an optional Nintendo Switch-compatible microSD card to provide additional room when internal storage is insufficient. Insert and prepare the card according to Nintendo’s console instructions, then start the redownload through Virtual Game Cards. The card expands storage capacity; it does not make a title appear for an account that did not buy it, and it does not bypass a distribution end.

If the download reports insufficient space, check both internal and removable storage, remove software you no longer need, or choose the available storage location offered by the console. Do not assume that deleting a HOME Menu icon has removed the purchase: it only removes local software data, leaving the account’s ownership record intact.

What changed on April 30, 2025

Before April 30, 2025, many users looked for a redownload list inside Nintendo eShop. Nintendo moved the ordinary purchased-software and add-on workflow to Virtual Game Cards. As a result, an older guide that instructs you to open an eShop redownload menu can lead you to a screen that no longer contains the expected list.

The date matters when diagnosing instructions found in older manuals, forum posts, or videos. On a current system, begin at the HOME Menu and look for Virtual Game Cards. Use the product page only for the categories Nintendo separates from purchased software: Nintendo Switch Online-exclusive software and demos.

A decision guide for common situations

Your situation Action Likely reason if it fails
Deleted a paid game on the same Switch Virtual Game Cards > purchasing user > title > set virtual game card. Wrong user, no internet, insufficient storage, or distribution ended.
Deleted paid add-on content Use Virtual Game Cards and select the account that bought the add-on. The base game’s owner is not necessarily the add-on purchaser.
Moved a user to another Switch Link the same account on the destination console and set the virtual game card there. The transfer does not assign virtual game cards automatically.
Initialized the console Relink the purchasing account and set the virtual game cards again. Local software and microSD data were removed or invalidated by initialization.
Cannot find a Switch Online-exclusive title Open its individual product page and use the download control. It is not listed through the ordinary purchased-software route.
Cannot find a demo Open the demo’s individual product page and download it there. Demos use the product-page route.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Opening Nintendo eShop first

The old eShop-focused instructions are outdated for ordinary purchases after April 30, 2025. Return to the HOME Menu and open Virtual Game Cards instead.

Choosing the current player instead of the buyer

The person currently using the Switch may not be the account that paid for the game. Switch users are separate from Nintendo Account ownership, so select the purchaser’s linked user.

Assuming a transfer completed the download

A user transfer and a software installation are separate operations. On the new console, set each virtual game card after the account is available there.

Expecting a redownload to restore saves

The download restores installed software, not automatically the previous progress. Check save-data options separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring distribution status

If Nintendo has ended redownload distribution, repeated account checks and storage changes will not make the title available. The limitation is availability from Nintendo, not a problem with the deleted icon.

How to verify that the reinstall worked

Wait until the download and installation finish rather than launching while the title is still pending. The game should appear as installed on the HOME Menu. Start it with the user profile that normally plays it and confirm that any required add-on content is present. If the base game opens but an expansion is missing, return to Virtual Game Cards and check the account that purchased that add-on.

If the title remains in a waiting state, verify the internet connection and available storage first. If it never appears in the account’s list, work through the account, software category, and distribution checks in that order; those checks distinguish a setup problem from a title that Nintendo no longer offers for redownload.

Quick Recap

Key points to remember

  • The original purchasing Nintendo Account is required.
  • For ordinary purchased games and add-ons, the current route is HOME Menu > Virtual Game Cards.
  • The route changed on April 30, 2025; older eShop redownload instructions may no longer match the interface.
  • Deleting software removes local files, not the account’s purchase record.
  • A console move or reset requires setting the virtual game card again on the console you intend to use.
  • Nintendo Switch Online-exclusive software and demos are downloaded from their individual product pages.
  • Redownloading software does not automatically restore save data.
  • A compatible microSD card can add storage, but it cannot change account ownership, restore saves, or overcome an ended distribution.
