To move a WordPress site to a new domain without abandoning existing links, prepare a page-by-page URL map, publish the new site, issue direct permanent redirects from every relevant old URL to its final new URL, update WordPress and its stored links, then verify the move in Google Search Console. Keep the old domain and redirects active for at least one year.
A redirect only routes a request. It does not move your content, rewrite links stored in WordPress, update canonical tags or sitemaps, or tell Google that a domain move has happened. Those tasks must be handled separately.
What a domain redirect does—and what it does not do
When someone visits an address on the old domain, a permanent redirect tells the browser and search engines to request the corresponding address on the new domain. For example, an old page at /contact/ should normally lead directly to /contact/ on the new domain when the content and path are unchanged.
The redirect is only one part of a site migration. The new WordPress installation must contain the intended content, WordPress must use the new domain in its settings, and links, menus, canonical references and XML sitemaps should use the new URLs. Google must also recrawl the changed addresses, so rankings and visibility can fluctuate temporarily.

Plan the move before changing DNS or redirect rules
Confirm that the new WordPress site is ready
Finish the new site before sending visitors there. Check that its pages, media, navigation, forms and access controls work on the new domain. If the new site is not ready, redirecting the old domain simply sends visitors to incomplete pages or errors.
Make a backup of the WordPress files and database before changing URL settings or stored links. A backup gives you a recovery point if a URL replacement or configuration change causes a problem.
Inventory the old URLs that matter
Start with old URLs that receive visits, have external links, appear in search results or contain valuable content. Include the homepage, category and tag archives when they are part of the site’s public structure, downloadable files and important landing pages. You do not need to preserve every obsolete query-string variation, but you should account for any old address that users or search engines still request.

Create a URL map
Record one destination for each important old URL before configuring redirects. Keep the path when the new site has the same information architecture. If a path changed, map the old address to the closest new page that satisfies the same user need. Do not send unrelated pages to the homepage merely because it is convenient; a blanket homepage redirect gives visitors and search engines no useful equivalent.
| Old request | New destination | Mapping decision |
|---|---|---|
Old domain plus an unchanged path such as /contact/ |
New domain plus /contact/ |
Preserve the path and send the request directly to its counterpart. |
| Old page whose path changed | The new page covering the same topic or task | Create an explicit one-to-one mapping rather than relying on a path-preserving wildcard. |
| Removed page with no relevant replacement | No unrelated substitute | Decide deliberately how the server should handle it; do not claim that the homepage is an equivalent page. |
Keep the map in a form that can be checked after launch. It is also useful when you need to explain a missing redirect to a developer or hosting administrator.
Point the old domain to an environment that can redirect it
The old domain must still resolve to a server or hosting account that can answer requests. The exact DNS and hosting steps depend on your provider and server software. Ask the hosting company or server administrator which server-side redirect options are available before editing configuration files.
Do not switch the old domain to the new WordPress installation and assume WordPress will automatically redirect every old URL. The server must recognize the old hostname and issue the redirect before the request reaches the wrong site, or the CMS must have a reliable redirect function that handles the complete URL map.

Choose where redirects will be managed
There are two legitimate implementation routes: server-level rules and a redirect function in the CMS. The right choice depends on what your host supports and who will maintain the rules.
| Approach | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Server configuration | Redirects can run before WordPress loads and can cover the old domain even when the old site’s files are gone. | Syntax and behavior depend on the server. A rule must use the correct host and protocol, preserve the intended path, and avoid loops. |
| WordPress or another CMS redirect function | Site owners may be able to maintain mappings through the administration interface. | The old request must still reach that CMS, and the function must issue a permanent server-side response for every mapped URL without creating chains. |
Neither route is universally best. Verify that the chosen method can redirect all important old URLs, issue a permanent response and send each request straight to its final destination. No particular plugin or hosting provider is required for a correct migration.
Configure direct permanent redirects
Use a permanent status
For a permanent domain move, use a server-side 301 or 308 redirect when the hosting environment supports it. These status codes communicate that the old address has moved permanently. A redirect in browser-side script or a temporary status does not provide the same signal.
Send each request straight to its final URL
Avoid chains such as old URL to an intermediate URL and then to the new URL. Every extra hop adds failure points and latency. Configure the old request to resolve directly to the final protocol, hostname and path. If an existing chain cannot be removed immediately, keep it as short as possible and replace it with a direct rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not install an untested wildcard
A path-preserving wildcard is safe only when the old and new sites have matching structures. If many paths changed, a wildcard can send visitors to nonexistent pages or to the wrong content. Use the URL map for changed paths instead.
Do not copy a one-size-fits-all .htaccess snippet into every WordPress host. Apache configuration, other server software, HTTPS settings and existing rules differ. A rule that works on one account can create a loop, redirect the new domain back to itself or drop part of the path on another. Have the administrator adapt the rule to your old hostname, new hostname, protocol and map.
Preserve the request details you intentionally support
Decide how trailing slashes, uppercase variants, file extensions and query strings should behave on the new site. The destination in the map should be the canonical final URL, not another address that will immediately redirect again. Test representative variations rather than assuming that every old pattern is valid on the new installation.

Change WordPress Address and Site Address safely
WordPress has two URL settings that must reflect the new domain:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- WordPress Address (URL): the address where the WordPress core files are located.
- Site Address (URL): the public address visitors use for the site.
In the administration area, these appear under the general site settings. Change them to the final new-domain URLs, using the intended protocol. Save only after confirming that the new site is reachable and that you have a backup. A mistaken value can make the administration area or front end appear unavailable, so make this change deliberately and keep an alternate recovery path through your host or database administrator.
Replace stored old-domain URLs without corrupting serialized data
Changing the two settings does not rewrite every old-domain reference stored in WordPress. Content, menus, widgets, custom fields, media references, canonical settings and other options may still contain the old address.
WordPress warns that a blind database-wide search-and-replace can damage serialized data. Serialized values store string lengths; changing a URL without updating those lengths can make the value unreadable. Use a migration or database tool that understands serialized data, or have someone experienced with WordPress database administration perform the replacement. Back up the database first and verify the result on the new site.
Do not edit arbitrary database tables with a hand-written script unless you understand the schema, serialized formats and rollback procedure. The goal is to update references to the new domain while preserving the structure of stored values.
Recommended Free Tools
Update links, canonical references and the sitemap
After the domain settings and stored values are updated, browse the new site and inspect its generated HTML. Internal navigation should link to the new domain, not send visitors through the old domain. Check menus, footer links, images, downloadable files, pagination and forms.
Review canonical tags and any other URL metadata generated by WordPress or SEO tools. The canonical address for a new page should be the new-domain URL. Submit an XML sitemap whose entries use the new domain; do not rely on redirects inside the sitemap to complete the migration.

These updates matter even when redirects work. A redirect helps an old request, but links on the new site that still point to the old domain create unnecessary hops and make it harder for crawlers to discover the final URLs.
Test the migration before announcing it
Test representative old URLs
- Open the old homepage and confirm that it returns a permanent redirect to the new homepage.
- Test several old pages whose paths did not change, such as an unchanged contact page.
- Test pages whose paths changed and verify that each reaches the mapped, equivalent page.
- Test an old URL with a valuable external link, a downloadable file and any important archive or landing page.
- Confirm that the final destination loads successfully and displays the expected content.
Check for loops and chains
Inspect the complete sequence for each test. The old URL should not redirect to itself, alternate repeatedly between domains or pass through an unnecessary intermediate address. Confirm that the new domain never redirects back to the old one unless that behavior is explicitly part of a temporary test.
Check the new site’s internal behavior
Follow menus and in-content links from the new pages. Confirm that forms submit to the new domain, media loads without old-domain dependencies and the sitemap lists new URLs. A redirect test that passes while internal links remain old is not a complete migration test.
Use Google Search Console for a domain move
Submit Change of Address for a domain or subdomain change
After the redirects are live and the new site is verified, use Search Console’s Change of Address tool for the old site, following Google’s current verification and eligibility requirements. This tool is intended for a domain-name or subdomain move. It is not the tool for an HTTP-to-HTTPS-only change.
Submit the new sitemap
Add the new-domain sitemap in the new Search Console property. The sitemap helps Google discover the final URLs, but it does not replace redirects or internal-link updates.
Inspect important URLs
Use URL Inspection for important new pages that appear to be missing. Check whether Google can crawl the final URL, whether the page is indexed and whether a redirect or server error is interfering. Continue watching coverage and indexing reports after launch.
Keep the old domain and redirects active
Google Search Central recommends keeping redirects for as long as possible, generally at least one year. It separately recommends continuing to pay for the old domain for at least a year. This preserves access for visitors with bookmarks and gives search engines and external sites time to recrawl old addresses.

Do not cancel the old registration as soon as the new site appears in search results. Losing control of the old domain can allow someone else to claim it and prevents you from serving the redirects that protect your old links.
What to expect after launch
Google does not update every result immediately when a permanent redirect is published. It must recrawl the old and new URLs, process the move and refresh its index. Google says small and medium sites may take a few weeks for most pages to move; larger sites can take longer. Processing time depends in part on the number of URLs and server speed.
Search visibility can fluctuate temporarily during the move. A temporary change in impressions or rankings is not, by itself, proof that the redirect was implemented incorrectly. Use crawl, indexing and server reports to distinguish normal processing from a broken map or inaccessible destination.

| The old URL opens the old site with no redirect. | The old hostname is not reaching the redirect configuration, or the rule does not match that path. | Confirm DNS and hosting ownership of the old domain, then ask the administrator to check the rule for the exact hostname and path. |
| The browser reports too many redirects. | Rules on the old and new domains point back to each other, or protocol rules conflict. | Trace the sequence, remove the loop and make the old request point directly to the final new URL. |
| Every old page goes to the homepage. | A blanket rule was used instead of the prepared map. | Replace it with path-preserving rules only where structures match and explicit mappings for changed paths. |
| The new page loads, but links still use the old domain. | WordPress content, menus or settings still contain old-domain values. | Run a serialized-data-safe replacement and review internal links, canonical references and the sitemap. |
| Images or widgets are broken after the move. | Stored absolute URLs still reference the old domain, or mixed protocol references remain. | Inspect the affected content and stored settings, update them safely and test the final protocol. |
| Search results still show old URLs. | Google has not recrawled or processed all URLs yet, or some old URLs lack a valid redirect. | Keep redirects live, submit the new sitemap, inspect important URLs and monitor reports over the following weeks. |
| A database replacement caused missing or corrupted settings. | Serialized values were altered without updating their encoded lengths. | Restore the backup or have a database administrator repair the affected values with a serialization-aware tool. |
Special cases that need a separate decision
Only the domain changed
When the content structure is unchanged, preserve each path and redirect the old domain’s request to the same path on the new domain. Still test representative pages and update WordPress’s stored URLs, because identical paths do not update database references automatically.
The domain and URL structure changed
Use explicit page-to-page mappings for changed paths. Grouping all old pages under one wildcard is risky unless every path has a valid equivalent. Prioritize pages with visits, links and valuable content, then test each mapped destination.
The move is only from HTTP to HTTPS
Use the appropriate HTTPS redirects and update WordPress and internal references, but do not submit the Change of Address tool for an HTTP-to-HTTPS-only move. The tool is for a domain or subdomain change.
An old page has no equivalent
Do not invent a topical match merely to avoid a missing destination. Decide how that URL should be handled based on the content and user need, and document the decision in the map so it can be reviewed later.
Quick Recap
Post-launch maintenance checklist
- Keep the old domain registered and the redirect service active for at least one year.
- Watch server access and error logs for requests that return loops, missing pages or unexpected destinations.
- Review Search Console coverage, indexing and inspection results for important new URLs.
- Fix newly discovered old-domain links on the new site instead of allowing them to create redirect hops.
- Update external profiles, email signatures and other properties that you control to use the new domain.
- When a destination changes later, edit the map so the old URL still reaches the current final URL directly.
