To redirect blog.example.com to example.com, keep a DNS record for the subdomain, make sure the old hostname has a valid HTTPS certificate, and configure a web or edge server to return a permanent HTTP redirect. DNS only points the hostname to infrastructure; the HTTP response performs the redirect. Use a 301 or 308, preserve the incoming path and relevant query string, and map each article to its equivalent destination instead of sending the entire blog to the homepage.
How the redirect actually works
A subdomain move has two separate layers. Understanding both prevents the most common configuration mistake: creating a DNS record and expecting browsers or search engines to be redirected automatically.
DNS gets the request to a service
An A, AAAA, or CNAME record for blog.example.com tells DNS where that hostname is served. The record can point to your web server, hosting account, or a CDN that is able to answer the request. DNS does not send an HTTP status code and cannot, by itself, tell a browser that the URL has moved.
HTTP returns the move response
After DNS resolution, a browser connects to the destination service and requests the old URL. That service must answer with an HTTP 301 (Moved Permanently) or 308 (Permanent Redirect), including the new URL in the Location header. Google identifies 301 and 308 as permanent server-side redirects and recommends a permanent server-side redirect when a page URL has changed.

For example, a request for https://blog.example.com/guides/setup?source=newsletter should receive a redirect to the corresponding main-domain URL, such as https://example.com/guides/setup?source=newsletter. The path and, when useful, the query string are part of the migration plan.
Plan the URL map before changing anything
Do not begin with a blanket rule. First create an inventory of the URLs that matter, then decide where each one belongs on the main domain.

- Export published article URLs, including their current paths and trailing-slash style.
- Record RSS or Atom feeds, category and tag pages, author archives, pagination, and other indexable blog pages.
- Include important image, stylesheet, script, and download URLs if users or crawlers still request them from the subdomain.
- Capture common query-string variants used by campaigns, search, filters, or old links.
- Mark pages that have no replacement, such as retired announcements or duplicate archives.
Choose one-to-one destinations
When an article has an equivalent URL on the main domain, redirect directly to that URL. If the old article was /news/product-update and the new article is /blog/product-update, the rule should send visitors to that exact path. Google advises mapping old URLs to relevant new URLs rather than redirecting unrelated pages to the homepage.
| Old URL | Preferred destination | Reason |
|---|---|---|
https://blog.example.com/guides/setup |
https://example.com/blog/guides/setup |
Equivalent article with a changed folder |
https://blog.example.com/about |
https://example.com/about |
Same page moved to the main host |
https://blog.example.com/old-event |
A closely related, current page | Use a relevant replacement, not a generic homepage redirect |
https://blog.example.com/retired-page |
No destination, if no useful replacement exists | Do not create a misleading redirect solely to avoid a 404 |
Decide how query strings should behave
Preserve campaign and attribution parameters when analytics or partners still depend on them. Preserve search or filter parameters only when the destination supports the same function. A redirect that keeps an irrelevant parameter can create duplicate URLs, while dropping a needed campaign parameter can break reporting. Document the decision for each parameter family before writing the rule.
Choose the implementation point
| Method | Control point | Best fit | Checks before launch |

| DNS/CDN redirect | Provider proxy and redirect-rule layer | DNS is managed by a provider with edge redirect rules | Record is proxied, certificate covers the old host, and path/query preservation is enabled |
Apache configuration or .htaccess |
Origin web server | Self-managed Apache hosting | Host matching, rewrite order, HTTPS handling, and 301 syntax |
| Nginx server block | Origin web server | VPS or managed Nginx | server_name, certificate configuration, and the return directive |
| Hosting-panel forwarding | Hosting control panel | Managed shared hosting | Whether forwarding supports paths, HTTPS, and query strings |
Use one authoritative redirect layer for the old hostname. Stacking a panel forward, an origin rule, and a CDN rule can create chains or loops that are harder to diagnose.
Set up a redirect at the DNS/CDN edge
An edge rule is useful when your DNS provider can proxy the subdomain and issue redirects before a request reaches your origin. The following sequence uses the terminology documented for Cloudflare-style DNS and Single Redirect rules; labels differ across providers.

- Create or retain the DNS record. Add an A record for the
bloghost, or retain the existing A, AAAA, or CNAME record. Turn on the provider’s proxy mode when the redirect rule requires traffic to pass through the edge. A DNS-only record sends traffic directly to the origin and will not trigger an edge rule. - Make the old hostname serve HTTPS. The certificate presented for
blog.example.commust be valid before the redirect can be followed. With a proxied first-level subdomain, the provider’s Universal SSL coverage may handle the edge certificate. With DNS-only hosting, the origin must have a certificate for the old hostname. - Create a host-specific redirect rule. In the provider dashboard, open the redirect-rules area, choose a Single Redirect, and match the old hostname (and, if needed, only the paths being migrated).
- Build a dynamic target. A target such as
concat("https://example.com", http.request.uri.path)changes only the hostname while retaining the incoming path. If your destination uses a different folder, use explicit path mappings for those URLs instead of one blanket expression. - Enable query-string preservation. Use the rule’s preserve-query-string option when parameters should follow the request. Test both a clean URL and a URL containing parameters; do not assume every provider defaults to the same behavior.
- Select a permanent status. Choose 301 for a permanent move, or 308 when you specifically need the method-preserving semantics of that status. Do not use a temporary 302 for a migration you intend to keep.
- Publish and test a small sample. Check the root, one short article, one deeply nested article, a trailing-slash variant, and a URL with a query string before enabling the rule for every path.
Cloudflare’s documented pattern is to create a proxied DNS A record for the subdomain and then apply a Single Redirect with a dynamic target that concatenates the new origin and http.request.uri.path. The important concepts are the same on other edge platforms: proxied traffic, valid TLS, a permanent response, and deliberate path/query handling.
Configure Apache on the origin
Apache can issue the redirect in the old subdomain’s virtual host or in an appropriate .htaccess file. A host condition prevents requests for other domains on the same server from being redirected accidentally.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://example.com/$1 [R=301,L,NE]
In a per-directory .htaccess file, the pattern is evaluated without the leading slash, so the substitution adds one. Apache normally carries the original query string forward when the substitution does not specify a new query string. If you intentionally need to discard or replace parameters, add and test that behavior explicitly.
Place the rule before application rewrites that could consume the request first. If both HTTP and HTTPS reach Apache, make sure the rule handles the old host on either scheme and always emits the final HTTPS URL. Apache documents the permanent pattern using RewriteRule with the [R=301,L] flags; the host match and final hostname are the parts you must adapt.

Configure Nginx with a dedicated server block
Create a server block that listens for the old hostname and has a certificate valid for it. The simplest host-wide redirect is:
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name blog.example.com;
# ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key for blog.example.com
return 301 https://example.com$request_uri;
}
$request_uri contains the requested path and query string, so this form preserves both. Add an HTTP listener for port 80 that also redirects to the HTTPS URL, or use your provider’s equivalent certificate and HTTP-to-HTTPS configuration. If some articles move into a new folder, use more specific location blocks or a map rather than forcing every path into the same destination.

Use hosting-panel forwarding carefully
Shared-hosting panels often provide a “Redirects,” “URL forwarding,” or similar screen. Select the old subdomain, choose a permanent redirect, and enter the destination scheme and host. Before relying on the panel, verify three capabilities in its documentation or a test request:
- It serves the old hostname over HTTPS with a valid certificate.
- It forwards the complete path instead of sending every request to the destination root.
- It preserves, removes, or transforms query strings according to your documented plan.
If the panel cannot preserve paths or cannot issue HTTPS redirects for the old host, use an origin server block or an edge redirect instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
HTTPS, certificates, and hostname variants
A redirect cannot help a client that cannot establish TLS with the old hostname first. Install or retain a certificate that covers blog.example.com, and test https://blog.example.com directly. If the blog was also reachable at a bare domain, a www variant, or another subdomain, decide whether each variant should redirect and configure it explicitly.
Keep the DNS record for the old host while redirects are active. Removing it before caches, users, and crawlers have discovered the new address produces DNS errors instead of redirects. The same applies to an old HTTP endpoint: it must still resolve and answer so that an HTTP request can reach the HTTPS redirect.
Update the site’s signals after the redirect
Redirects handle incoming requests, but they do not update URLs embedded in your site. Change the following to the main-domain addresses:
- Internal navigation links and links inside older articles.
- XML sitemaps and feed URLs.
- Canonical tags and structured-data URL properties.
- Social sharing or open-graph URL fields used by your templates.
- Analytics property, host, and referral settings that distinguish the old and new hostname.
Keep the old host’s redirects in place while search engines recrawl the migrated URLs. A redirect is not a substitute for publishing the new canonical URLs in your own site signals.

Test the redirect before retiring the old blog
Use an HTTP header tool or a command-line client from outside your hosting dashboard. For example:
curl -I https://blog.example.com/guides/setup
curl -I "https://blog.example.com/guides/setup?source=newsletter"
curl -I http://blog.example.com/guides/setup
For each representative request, verify the following:
- The response is one intended 301 or 308, not a series of redirects.
- The
Locationheader uses the final HTTPS main-domain hostname. - The article path is the mapped destination path, including any intentional folder change.
- The query string is retained or removed exactly as planned.
- The old HTTPS hostname presents a valid certificate without a browser warning.
- The destination returns a successful page response rather than another redirect or an error.
- No redirect points back to the old host, which would create a loop.
Test the bare subdomain, common hostname variants, the root path, representative articles, trailing slashes, feed URLs, and any important asset or download paths. Check both HTTP and HTTPS, because a rule that works only on one scheme leaves part of the old link set broken.

DNS resolves, but no redirect appears
The record may be DNS-only while the redirect rule exists only at the provider edge. Either enable the required proxy mode or move the redirect to the origin server that receives the request. Confirm that the request’s Host header matches the rule.
Recommended Free Tools
The browser reports a certificate error
The old hostname is missing from the certificate, or the request is reaching a DNS-only origin without suitable TLS. Install a certificate for the old subdomain at the edge or origin, then test HTTPS again before judging the redirect rule.
Every article lands on the homepage
The rule uses a fixed destination instead of the incoming path, or the hosting panel does not support path forwarding. Replace the fixed target with a path-preserving expression, such as the Cloudflare-style concat("https://example.com", http.request.uri.path), or create explicit one-to-one mappings for changed folders.

Query parameters disappear
Enable query-string preservation in the edge rule or panel. On Apache and Nginx, inspect the actual Location header; Nginx’s $request_uri includes the query string, while an explicitly constructed replacement can omit it.
There is a redirect chain or loop
Inspect each hop with curl -I. Remove duplicate forwards at the panel, CDN, and origin, and ensure the destination host is excluded from the old-host rule. The goal is one permanent response from the old URL directly to the final HTTPS URL.

There is no universal DNS-propagation or ranking-recovery duration. Timing varies with DNS TTLs, resolver and browser caches, certificate issuance, crawl scheduling, and the quality of the URL map. The practical rule is to keep every relevant old URL redirecting while users and crawlers continue to request it, and to monitor requests before removing the old service.
Neither the implementation documentation nor Google’s redirect guidance promises a fixed ranking-retention percentage or a guaranteed completion date. A technically correct 301 or 308, equivalent destinations, updated site signals, and a redirect without chains give search engines the clearest migration path; results still depend on crawling and the relevance of each replacement page.
Moving a blog into folders on the main domain
A subdomain-to-folder move is a hostname change and a path change, so a single host-only rule is not enough when the folder structure differs. Build a mapping table for changed paths, then implement exact rules before the general fallback.
- List each old article and its new folder path.
- Create explicit redirects for renamed or consolidated articles.
- Add a general path-preserving rule only for URLs whose path remains valid on the main domain.
- Update canonical tags, sitemaps, feeds, structured data, and internal links to the folder URLs.
- Test old and new paths, including query strings and trailing slashes, and remove any rule that creates a chain.
This approach lets blog.example.com/post-a become example.com/blog/post-a while allowing an exception such as blog.example.com/legacy-news to go to a specifically chosen replacement.
Quick Recap
