The entitlement shown on your Humble purchase page determines the installation method. A Steam key must be activated on the Steam account that should own the game; after activation, install it from the Steam Library on your Steam Deck. A standalone download is installed in Desktop Mode and then added to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut.
Both routes can work on Steam Deck, but they are not equivalent. Steam-owned games receive Steam-managed installation and updates, while a non-Steam shortcut only launches files you installed yourself. Proton compatibility, third-party launchers, logins and anti-cheat requirements can still prevent an individual title from working correctly.
Start by identifying what Humble sold you
Open the Humble purchase page and inspect the entitlement before downloading anything. The product label, not the fact that it came from Humble, determines the correct workflow.

What you need before starting
- Access to the Humble account and purchase page containing the key or downloadable files.
- The Steam account that should permanently own a Steam-key game. Activation is account-bound and cannot be moved later.
- An internet connection for account sign-in, key activation, downloads and any required launcher login.
- Sufficient free storage on the Deck. The Steam install screen reports the space required for a Steam title; a standalone installer may report its own requirement.
- Steam Deck access to Desktop Mode for standalone installation and, when necessary, for using the Steam desktop client’s product-activation command.
- A physical keyboard and mouse only if you prefer them. The Deck trackpad and on-screen keyboard can handle many desktop tasks, although a USB or Bluetooth set can make long paths, passwords and installer dialogs easier.
Keep a record of the key and the purchase details. Steam may request key information when investigating account ownership. Digital keys are not the same as proof supplied in physical packaging, so retaining the original Humble record is still useful.
Route 1: redeem a Humble Steam key
1. Reveal the correct key
On the Humble purchase page, locate the game’s Steam entitlement and reveal or copy its product code. Do not use a standalone download link for this route, and do not try a code labeled for a different store or platform.
2. Activate the product in the Steam client
- Sign in to the Steam account that should own the game.
- Open the Steam client. If you are doing this on the Deck and the Gaming Mode interface does not expose the command, switch to Desktop Mode first.
- Choose + Add a Game at the bottom left of the Steam client.
- Select Activate a Product on Steam….
- Follow the on-screen prompts, accept the product terms when requested, and enter the Humble key.
- Wait for Steam to confirm the registration before closing the dialog.
Steam describes a successfully registered key as proof of purchase for the game and proof of ownership for the Steam account to which it was registered. That is why selecting the correct account matters: the license is attached to that account, not to the Deck hardware or to the Humble page.
3. Install from the Deck Library
- Return to Gaming Mode if you used Desktop Mode.
- Open the Steam Library and select the newly activated game.
- Choose Install, select the internal drive or a compatible microSD card, and review the required space.
- Allow the download and shader or compatibility files to finish before launching.
- Start the game from Gaming Mode and complete any first-run sign-in or configuration it requests.
A Steam-key title follows the normal Steam ownership model. Its listing, install state and Steam-delivered updates are managed through the account’s Library rather than through a manually created shortcut.

4. Check first launch requirements
A game can be correctly activated yet still need a publisher launcher, an external account or a one-time online login. Enter those credentials only in the title’s expected launcher and make sure the Deck has a working network connection. If the game uses an anti-cheat system or a launcher without a compatible Linux or Proton path, activation alone will not guarantee playability.
Route 2: install a standalone Humble build
Use this route when the Humble page supplies an installer or game files instead of a Steam key. The result is a non-Steam shortcut: convenient to launch from the Deck interface, but not a Steam-owned license.
1. Switch to Desktop Mode
- Open the Steam menu in Gaming Mode.
- Choose Power.
- Select Switch to Desktop and wait for the desktop environment to load.
Desktop Mode gives you a conventional file manager, installer windows and the full Steam desktop client. You can navigate with the trackpad and trigger clicks with the trackpad buttons; the on-screen keyboard appears when text input is required.
2. Download and install the supplied build
- Open the Humble purchase page in the desktop browser and download the files supplied for your operating system.
- Save them somewhere easy to find, such as the Downloads folder, and read the installer’s destination path before accepting it.
- Run the installer or unpack the archive according to the instructions included with the purchase.
- Note the final executable location. You will need to browse to that file when creating the Steam shortcut.
The downloadable build may be a Linux-native program, a Windows program intended to run through Proton, or a package with its own launcher. The purchase page’s operating-system information is the authority for which files you received; do not assume every standalone build uses the same executable or launch options.

3. Add the executable to the Steam Library
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Click Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- If the installed game appears in the list, select it. Otherwise choose Browse and navigate to the game’s executable.
- Confirm the selection and add it to the Library.
- Optionally rename the shortcut or add artwork later, but keep the target executable unchanged until you have confirmed that it launches.
Valve characterizes this feature as adding a shortcut to the Steam client. It does not convert the purchase into a Steam license, and it does not place the game in the same ownership record as a title activated with a Steam key.
4. Return to Gaming Mode and launch
- Use the desktop environment’s application menu to return to Gaming Mode, or restart the Deck into Gaming Mode.
- Open the Library’s non-Steam section and select the shortcut you created.
- Launch it and allow the first run to create configuration files or request permissions.
- If the program does not start, return to Desktop Mode and adjust its compatibility or launch settings before trying again.
Steam key versus standalone shortcut
| Decision point | Steam key | Standalone build added as non-Steam |
|---|---|---|
| Account integration | Registered to a Steam account and shown as a normal Library license | Shortcut stored in Steam; the purchase remains outside Steam ownership |
| Installation | Install button in the Steam Library | Install files in Desktop Mode, then choose the executable manually |
| Updates | Delivered through Steam when the title publishes an update | Downloaded through the game’s installer, launcher or publisher process |
| Deck interface | Normal Steam game entry in Gaming Mode | Entry under non-Steam games |
| Proton and controller behavior | Steam’s per-title compatibility settings and controller layout are available | Proton and controller behavior must be configured for the shortcut and may require experimentation |
| Launcher or login | May still require a third-party launcher, account or first-run login | Depends on the standalone build and any launcher it includes |
| Platform or region limits | Must match the Steam platform and any stated region restriction | Must match the operating system and region terms shown with the download |
Using Proton with non-Steam games
Steam Deck supports running non-Steam games through Proton, but support is title-specific. A shortcut can launch successfully, launch with missing features, or fail before a menu appears. The outcome can depend on the game’s graphics technology, video codecs, launcher, login service, digital-rights checks and anti-cheat implementation.
For a Windows standalone build, open the shortcut’s properties in the Steam desktop client and look for the compatibility tools available on the Deck. Select a Proton version, test the launch, and change versions only when the current one fails or a title-specific instruction calls for it. For a Linux-native build, forcing Proton can be counterproductive; first test the program without forcing a compatibility layer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesController support is also independent of whether the files came from Humble. Steam Input can map controls for many programs, but a launcher or game may initially expect a keyboard and mouse. Configure a layout for the shortcut and test it from Gaming Mode before assuming the game itself is broken.

Do you need a keyboard and mouse?
No. Valve documents the Deck’s built-in trackpad and on-screen keyboard as options for Desktop Mode, and they are often enough to reveal a key, enter a license code, browse to an executable and complete a basic installer.
A physical keyboard and mouse are optional conveniences rather than requirements. They are most useful when:
- An installer has many text fields or small controls.
- You must enter a long password or launcher code.
- The game’s first-run setup does not recognize the Deck controls.
- You are repeatedly browsing nested folders to locate an executable.
Connect USB or Bluetooth peripherals before opening the installer if you use them. Disconnecting them later does not remove the shortcut or installation.
Troubleshooting activation problems
Steam says the product code is invalid
- Recheck the Humble entitlement label and confirm that it specifically says Steam.
- Copy the code again without added spaces or line breaks.
- Check whether the Humble page identifies a region or edition restriction that does not match your Steam account.
- Do not retry a key intended for another platform; Steam does not accept those codes as Steam registrations.
Steam says the code is a duplicate
A duplicate-code message means the key has already been tied to a Steam account. It cannot be registered a second time. Sign in to any Steam accounts you may have used previously and check their Libraries. If you still cannot locate the license, retain the Humble purchase record and contact the appropriate support channel rather than repeatedly submitting the code.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The activation window closes without adding the game
Confirm that the Steam client is online, that you completed the final confirmation screen and that you are viewing the Library for the same account used during activation. A key is not redeemed merely by opening the activation dialog or pasting text into a field; Steam must display a successful registration result.
Troubleshooting standalone installs and launches
The shortcut appears but nothing happens
- Return to Desktop Mode and verify that the shortcut points to the game’s actual executable, not an installer or an old Downloads copy.
- Run the executable directly from the file manager to distinguish a broken install from a Steam shortcut problem.
- If it is a Windows program, test an available Proton version in the shortcut’s compatibility settings.
- Check whether the game needs a separate launcher, runtime package or first-run login.
The game opens, but controls do not work
Open the shortcut’s controller layout and choose a layout suited to the game. Some launchers require pointer input before the game window receives controller input. If the title fundamentally requires keyboard commands, keep a physical keyboard nearby or map those commands through Steam Input.
The installer cannot be found later
Use the file manager’s search or return to the installation destination you selected. Keep the installed folder in a stable location; moving it after creating the shortcut can invalidate the target path. If you move it, edit the non-Steam shortcut and browse to the new executable.

The game needs an update
A non-Steam shortcut does not receive updates through Steam. Run the game’s own updater, download a newer installer from the publisher’s process, or replace the installed files as directed by the standalone release. Steam will continue to launch the shortcut, but it does not become the update service for that purchase.
Ownership, updates and account boundaries
There are two separate records to understand. A redeemed Steam key creates a Steam license associated with one account. A non-Steam shortcut records only where an executable is located on the Deck. Valve states that a non-Steam shortcut does not let Steam download updates for the game or use that game as proof of ownership for the Steam account.
Consequently, backing up a shortcut does not transfer ownership, and signing in to a different Steam account does not make the standalone files that account’s Steam purchase. Keep the Humble receipt, key record and any standalone installer information with the files so you can reinstall or update them through the correct channel.
A completion checklist
- The Humble page clearly identifies the entitlement as a Steam key or standalone download.
- For a Steam key, the code was activated in the Steam client under the intended account.
- For a standalone build, the files were installed in Desktop Mode and the correct executable was added with Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- The shortcut or Steam title launches from Gaming Mode.
- Any required Proton version, launcher login, anti-cheat requirement or controller layout has been tested for this specific game.
- You know where updates will come from and have retained the key or installer record.
The Bottom Line
Redeem a Humble Steam key through Steam’s + Add a Game > Activate a Product on Steam… command, then install the title from your Deck Library. If Humble supplies only a standalone build, install it in Desktop Mode and add its executable as a non-Steam game. The second method is practical, but it does not provide Steam ownership or Steam-managed updates, and either route can be limited by the game’s Proton, launcher, login or anti-cheat compatibility.
