Reveal the Steam key on the Humble purchase page, then activate it in the Steam account that should permanently own the game. In the Steam client, use Games > Activate a Product on Steam… (or + Add a Game > Activate a Product on Steam…), paste the key, accept the agreement, and submit it. The title will then appear in Library for installation. If Steam reports an invalid or duplicate code, follow the matching recovery path rather than trying to redeem it repeatedly.
What happens when you redeem a Humble Steam key?
Humble supplies or reveals the product key; Steam performs the license activation. The key is not redeemed inside the Humble page itself. You open the unique Humble download or purchase page, reveal the game’s Steam key and any download details, and then transfer that key to Steam.
Steam binds a successfully activated title to the account that is signed in at the moment you submit the code. That account becomes the permanent ownership target for the license. You can install the game later from that account’s Library; signing in to a different Steam account will not move the license or let you activate the same key again.

Before you start: check the key and the account
Confirm that the item is a Steam key
Open the Humble purchase or game page and look for the Steam-specific key or redemption section. A page may show several choices, such as a Steam key, a direct download, or a key for another service. Select the Steam option only when it is explicitly labeled for Steam. A direct download does not become a Steam license merely because the game is also sold on Steam.
Sign in to the intended Steam account
Launch the Steam client and check the account name or profile indicator before entering the code. If you use multiple accounts—for example, a personal account and a family member’s account—stop if the wrong one is active. Product-key activation is account-bound, and Steam does not provide a transfer step in this redemption flow.
Keep the Humble page available
Leave the Humble page open while you activate the code. You may need to copy the key again, inspect the delivery format, or contact the retailer if Steam rejects it. Treat the key as a license credential: do not publish it in screenshots, chats, or public posts.
Where to enter a Humble key in Steam
Steam offers two equivalent client paths to the product-activation form:

The labels above include the ellipsis shown by Steam. Choosing Add a Non-Steam Game… is a different action and does not open the key-activation form.

Step-by-step: redeem the Humble Bundle Steam key
1. Open the Humble purchase page
Sign in to the Humble account used for the purchase, then open the relevant purchase, bundle, or game page. Locate the download and key area. Humble’s delivery page is where the Steam code is supplied or revealed; Steam cannot retrieve a hidden Humble code for you.
2. Reveal the code and identify its format
Use the page’s reveal control to display the Steam key, if it is hidden. Read the surrounding text so you know which product the code represents and whether the page also contains a separate download. Copy the complete code, including every character, without adding spaces or punctuation.

Start the Steam client and log in. Check the account identity before proceeding. If it is not the account that should own the title, sign out and switch accounts now, before submitting the key.
4. Open the activation form
- Choose Games from the top of the Steam client and select Activate a Product on Steam….
- Alternatively, select + Add a Game in the lower-left corner and then choose Activate a Product on Steam….
- Read the introductory information and continue through the onscreen prompts.
5. Accept the applicable agreement
Steam presents the agreement that applies to product-key activation. Review it and choose the control that indicates acceptance before moving to the code field. The activation cannot proceed until the required agreement step is accepted.
6. Paste and submit the key
Paste the copied Humble code into the product-key field. Compare the pasted value with the Humble page, especially at the beginning and end, then submit it. Do not submit while another Steam account is signed in; successful activation immediately associates the title with that account.

7. Confirm the result
Steam should display the product that was added and confirm the activation. Open Library and search for the title. If it is listed, select it and choose Install when you are ready. Installation can happen later; the license remains attached to the account after activation.

Steam also documents a browser-based product-key registration route. The important decision is the account session, not whether you use the client or a browser. Sign in to the Steam account that should own the game, open Steam’s product-key registration page, enter the Humble code, accept the applicable terms, and submit it. After a successful response, open the Steam client with that same account and check Library.
A browser form does not change the key’s purpose. It still registers a Steam license; it is not a method for adding a DRM-free download or a key intended for another launcher. If the browser reports an error, use the same invalid-code and duplicate-code checks described below.
How to tell whether activation worked
The title appears in Library
The clearest confirmation is a new entry in the signed-in account’s Library. Selecting the entry should expose the normal installation control. You do not need to redeem the key again merely because the download has not started; activation and installation are separate steps.
The product name does not match what you expected
Read Steam’s confirmation carefully. Bundles can contain several individual products, and a key may represent one specific item rather than the entire bundle. If the confirmed product is not the item shown on the Humble page, stop and preserve the Humble order details before contacting the retailer.

Steam says the product is already in your library
This indicates that the signed-in account already owns the title or that the key resolved to an existing license. Check Library and search by the product name. Do not create another account or repeatedly submit the same code; first establish which account received the activation.
Troubleshooting an invalid product code
An Invalid Product Code message means Steam could not accept the characters as a valid key for this activation attempt. Steam’s support guidance separates this from a duplicate-code error.
Check that the code is intended for Steam
Return to the Humble page and verify the delivery label. A key for another launcher, a direct download, or another platform will not activate through Steam’s product-key form. Use the service named on the Humble page instead.
Check characters that are easy to confuse
Compare the code one character at a time. Steam specifically calls out common ambiguities such as:
- 0 (zero) and O (capital letter o)
- 1 (one), I (capital i), and L (capital l)
- B (capital b) and 8
- G (capital g) and 6
Copying directly from the Humble page usually avoids transcription mistakes. If you must type the key, compare each group against the original and remove accidental spaces.

Do not keep retrying a code that remains invalid
If the Steam label is correct and the characters match, stop submitting the code and contact the retailer through the Humble purchase support path. Include the order information and the exact Steam error, but do not post the key publicly. The retailer is the party that can investigate a code supplied through its store.

A Duplicate Product Code message means Steam reports that the key is already tied to a Steam account and cannot be registered again. This is not the same condition as a mistyped or unsupported code.
Check every Steam account you use
Sign in to the accounts you control and search each Library for the title. If you find the game, that account received the license. Steam does not provide a second activation for another account because the same code has already been consumed.
If you never used the key
Preserve the Humble order record and contact the retailer. Tell support that Steam returned a duplicate-code error even though you did not redeem the key. Do not share the full code in an unsecured forum or with an unrelated person; provide it only through the retailer’s authenticated support process if requested.
What to do when the Humble item is not a Steam key
If the Humble page supplies a download rather than a Steam key, Steam’s library menu includes Add a Non-Steam Game…. This creates a shortcut in your Steam library so you can launch the separately installed program from Steam’s interface.
The shortcut does not redeem a Steam license, add Steam achievements, or convert the download into a Steam product. You still obtain and install the game using the delivery method specified on the Humble page. Use the non-Steam option only for convenience when the title cannot be added by CD key.
Adding a non-Steam shortcut
- Install or locate the program using the instructions supplied with the Humble download.
- In Steam, choose + Add a Game in the lower-left corner.
- Select Add a Non-Steam Game….
- Choose the installed program from the list, or browse to its executable when Steam asks you to select one.
- Confirm the selection. Steam adds a shortcut, while ownership and updates remain governed by the original download or launcher.
Common mistakes and the fastest fix

Choose the long-term owner
Steam activation is the point at which the license is assigned. Select the account you expect to use for the game in the future, not a temporary login or a friend’s account. The Humble purchase account and the Steam ownership account are separate identities; the key connects the product to whichever Steam account submits it.

Understand what activation does not do
- It does not merge two Steam accounts.
- It does not transfer an existing license from one account to another.
- It does not turn a direct download into a Steam product.
- It does not install the game automatically; installation is performed from Library afterward.
Keep a record of the transaction
Retain the Humble order page and Steam’s activation confirmation. These records identify the product and help the retailer distinguish an invalid code from a code that Steam says is already registered.
